Chapter 18: I Need My Brother
Artemis felt sick, tired and in pain. Her brother had been on punishment for nearly two years and all that time she had basically been alone. Her Father refused to allow her to help him. Not that she really followed that advice. She could be as sneaky as Hermes when she wanted to be. Not that they knew. Or wanted to believe.
But at the moment she was hiding a most terrible secret. A secret that had changed her and she didn't know what was going to happen when people did. It was not like this secret was her fault. Someone had decided to take advantage of the fact she was distracted by Apollo's punishment and the fact her brother wasn't here to protect her to do what every male in Olympus wanted to do.
So here she was in a situation she never dreamed to be possible. She had felt the change in her body and her domain after a week. She had panicked. She already was a mess her body and mind wouldn't stay still. Switching between Greek and Roman every few hours. No matter how hard she tried.
She knew it wasn't healthy and it would cost her. But no matter how hard she tried to stay in one form the more the change came.
She felt sick to her stomach nearly every second of the day. Nothing in her body was working right and she didn't know why. She tried to do what was right, but she wasn't sure it would be enough. She wanted this. But she knew the odds but wanted to defy them.
She didn't report the attack in fear of it causing more trouble or for her Father to find some way to somehow blame her.
Now she was alone and…pregnant. Yes, she was. She was scared witless about what might come and didn't know who to turn to. She didn't couldn't tell who was friend or foe these days her mind was breaking from her switching between forms and the fact the link between her and her brother was damaged.
They normally could share things between them. Sometimes energy, their powers, draw strength from each other and so one. But now there was nothing for her to lean on in this time of crisis.
7 months pregnant and now she started to feel horrible. Her stomach hurt and she couldn't keep anything down. She hoped something wasn't wrong, but her heart told her there was.
That one day when Apollo was fighting Nero and the Python was the day she was struck down.
This was the day that the Fates played their cruellest move on her of all time.
They were watching the battle and Artemis felt agony sweep through her body. It was so bad she cried out and fell from her throne tumbling to the ground barely conscious.
She felt hands going on her and she flinched from touch. Hestia and Athena's faces swam into view.
"Artemis what is it? What is wrong?" Athena asks hesitant to more her.
"Someone get Asclepius!" Hestia yells.
"Apollo", Artemis rasps as she cries out from the pain again.
"What? What do you mean?"
"I need my brother. Only Apollo. No one else is to touch me", she cries out as everyone sees her switch forms fast.
"Artemis we can't", Hestia tells her gently.
"Asclepius is here!" Hermes calls.
"Aunt Artemis I need…", Asclepius says nearly down.
But he and everyone else was pushed back by a silver shield.
"No, only Apollo. Only my brother. Need him", she begs as she felt the blood between her legs.
The others saw it too. Gold ichor to pooling between her legs.
"Aunty you're bleeding where are you hurt?" Asclepius asks, "Can you drop whatever this is and let me in?"
"No. Apollo. I need Apollo", Artemis cries as she screamed as pain raked her abdomen.
"Aunt if you don't get help you might bleed out if that is possible and you'll have to reform", Asclepius begs.
On the screen of the fight Apollo stood victorious over the Python and Meg over Nero.
"Hermes get Apollo now!" Zeus orders having seen enough.
Artemis barely heard over the pain and blood lose. And the thoughts of that she had failed.
Pain and ichor lose she knew showed the cost of what this ordeal with Apollo had cost her…
Apollo felt exhausted even through his Godly powers were flowing back into him. It was his mind that caused him the most trouble. Something was wrong. Very wrong.
His mind was singing to him telling him the one person he could always count on needed him. Now.
Before he could try and flash to her side Hermes appears looking panicked.
"Arte…", he starts but Apollo already flashed away.
He appears where his broken bond was singing to him to find Artemis laying on the Council floor with her shield in place. A shield that was only bought out in the direst of circumstances.
"Arty!" he shouts.
He pushed past Hestia, Athena and Asclepius and gets to the shield.
"Father you can't get in", Asclepius tells him.
"Yes, I can. Arty I am coming in", he tells her softly.
He slowly approached the shield and to everyone's surprise it gives way to him. His sister looked at him barely conscious. Looking at him with pain, terror, fear, need and the most gut wrenching of heartbreak you had ever seen in her silver eyes.
"Little One what happened?" Apollo asks her checking her pulse.
It was weak and thready. There was heat radiating from her skin and he saw the ichor pooling between her legs. Like she was…
"Arty have you got a glamour on?" Apollo asks her slowly.
A weak nod comes from her.
Apollo makes a quick decision to preserve whatever was left of his sisters' dignity. He gently scoops her up wincing at the cry that left her lips.
He didn't give the Council an answer or explanation he just flashed out taking his sister with him.
They rushed to Apollo's infirmary to find the doors barred to them. Locked in place by their Patron.
"Apollo! Let us in!" Zeus orders.
"Brother this isn't helping", Hestia tells him softly.
"We need to know what is going on", Zeus argues.
And the arguing continues as the doors remained barred…
Artemis barely felt what Apollo was doing. All she knew was that he was here and that she was safe and would be cared for. Her brother was here, and he would stabilizes her and with the thought she lets go of all the barriers she had put around herself and the restraint she had to not let everything show as the gut wrenching heartbreak and pain pulled her under…
Apollo had placed her on one of the most comfortable beds in his infirmary. He was hooking up the monitors when the glamour's and everything collapsed as he saw his sister lose her battle for conciseness.
His eyes widen as his suspicions were confirmed. His sisters swollen stomach explained everything he needed.
He placed his hands on her stomach and sent his powers into her. What he read sent him into a rage and grief. How could this have happened? Why her? Why his sister?
There was nothing he could do but heal the damage and give the lives that couldn't be lived the proper respect. For two little lives that would never live.
He fixed everything up. Artemis had lost a lot of ichor. Her abused body hadn't been able to handle the pregnancy. Her mind and body wouldn't allow it. It was only a miracle she had lasted as long as she did. But it still wasn't enough.
Apollo had heard the noise outside his infirmary door. But he ignored it in favour of tending to her. She needed him more than their blasted Father needed answers. It was partially his fault anyway.
Now his sister looked so small hooked up to all his equipment being given nectar, pain meds and fluids through an IV.
He sat by her side. Not leaving it even as the demands for his attention grow. Nobody could get in here without his permission. It was a sworn agreement when he became the doctor for Olympus. His clinic and infirmary his rules and he could bar anyone if he wished.
And now was the time for just him to be with his sister. No one else till he has been able to piece his sisters battered body and mind back together.
His fingers held onto her temple healing the damage of the broken bond and the strain of whatever happened in the last two years. Her mind was a wreck. He couldn't believe she was able to function on it. It was a testament to how strong she was. Now his magic smoothed the agony in it and pieced together the parts that had been shattered under everything.
As time went on the more aware her mind became and then the memories surfaced, and he saw EVERYTHING she had been put through the last 24 months and he was going to murder someone or two or three. Maybe make them fade and maybe make the Fates fade or feel like they should have never been born. Artemis had never deserved this. Never.
He saw how many times she called for him in need. How many times she saved him when he didn't know. He gave a sad smile seeing her be as sneaky as Hermes in order to help him survive from day to day. Things made a whole lot more sense seeing her memories and comparing them to his of his time as a mortal.
He saw the day she found out she was pregnant and the heartbreaking knowledge in her mind that the chance of her carrying her child to term was near nil. And she was right the damage on her body because of the switching forms, nightmares, the broken bond, her duties and the stress of watching his quest had been too much on her to carry. She and them never stood a chance.
Tears fell down his face seeing everything through her eyes and feeling the hopelessness coming through their joined minds of her realising how hopeless her situation was. But she had tried and the heartbreaking moment in the Throne Room when she knew she had failed.
"Apolly?" he heard a voice rasp.
Apollo looked to see his sister semi-conscious looking at him.
"Hey Little Moon", he says softly clasping her hands gently between his.
"You came", she whispers.
"Always", he promises.
"My…my baby?" she whispers.
He closed his eyes and then opened them and looked her straight in the eyes.
"I am so, so sorry…"
Outside the infirmary many still gathered sitting down having given up on trying to get Apollo to open up. Some were talking in small groups speculating about what was going on. Many others had joined them news having spread that Artemis was rushed to the infirmary after collapsing on council.
Hecate, Persephone, Amphitrite, Ariadne, Karmanor and a few other Nature Gods and Gods that liked and were concerned about the Goddess paced the area. Many whispers of speculator had been going around. And some of them didn't want certain whispers to be right.
Suddenly a sound that would haunt them to the day they faded sounded. Nearly over 16 hours since Artemis had been bought in.
It was a wail of pain and unimaginable grief was heard around the infirmary and some might say even outside into the streets of Olympus.
Hestia collapsed feeling the utter hopelessness coming from the room and the grief she flinched and began to sob even though she didn't know what happened.
Poseidon got down on his knees and wrapped his arms around her as they all stared at the still barred doors of the infirmary waiting for word of what happened.
But they each knew who had made that sound. And even Aphrodite looked close to tears. Nobody should make a sound like that.
It was the wail of the Moon Goddess. A wail that many would associate with unimaginable lose and heartbreak. And nobody could imagine that sound ever coming from the Moon Goddess.
And many saw the moon in the sky falter and when the light hit Olympus the sun appeared dull too. Like they both were grieving.
It had been now over 27 hours since the event started and now everybody just wanted to see if she was ok.
They had all been silent since an hour after the wail each trying to not/or imagine what could have caused it.
When they were broken out of their thoughts by Apollo coming out of the doors. Looking wrecked he shut the doors and before they could get up, he leans on the doors and slides down them tears falling from his already red eyes.
"If only I had been here sooner", he whispers his head in his hands.
"Apollo what happened?" Hermes asks softly kneeling down with Athena and Hestia as everyone looked at the clearly suffering Sun God that looked like he was close to breaking.
He didn't appear to be close to breaking when he fought the Emperors or when Jason die or anything to do with that quest. But looking at him now was like they could see his heart breaking.
"What happened Apollo? Is Artemis alright?" Hestia asks him frantically.
"She will never be alright again. I even doubt I'll be", he replies absently, grief in filling his weary body.
"What happened? Why did she collapse? What happened in there? What did she need?" Athena asks really worried.
"What she needed was her Brother. From the start that is what she always needed. If you learn anything from this let it be that. Let it be known when she acts like everything is ok then she needs her brother. Now we can't change anything. We can't turn back time and we can't bring what she lost back", Apollo whispers tears falling.
"Lost?"
"Apollo what do you mean?"
"This is the story of Artemis, Zoe Apolla and Hunter Phoebus and this is how it ends…"
