"Disoriented, I guess that's what comes closest. Fear, confusion, all those things, but disoriented comes the closest," Rick said. It was dark out now, and I slightly shivered at the breeze. I was snuggled in between Glenn and Dale for warmth. Rick had told us about his journey to us and what happened to him. He had a very similar story to me. Thrown into this situation with no idea of what's going on. At least he had someone to teach him.
"Words can be meager things. Sometimes they fall short," Dale said to Rick.
"I felt like I had been ripped out of my like and put somewhere else. For a while, I thought I was trapped in some coma dream. Something I might never wake up from," Rick said. I looked over at him from across the campfire.
"It's hard not to feel like everything's a dream," I told him, leaning on Glenn. He wrapped an arm around me. Rick nodded to me, understanding what I meant.
"Mom said you died," Carl said as he sat with his father.
"She had every reason to believe that. Don't you ever doubt it," Rick spoke softly.
"When things started to get really bad, they told me at the hospital that they were going to medevac you and the other patients to Altlanta… and it never happened," Lori explained to Rick.
"Well, I'm not surprised after Atlanta fell. And from the look of that hospital, it got overrun," Rick comforted Lori and Carl.
"Looks don't deceive. I barely got them out of there," Shane replied.
"I can't tell you how grateful I am to you, Shane," Rick stated.
"There go those words falling short again. Paltry things," Dale said. Just as he said that we heard a clunk from Ed, Carol, and Sofia's fire. Ed had put on another log.
"Hey, Ed! You want to rethink that log?" Shane called over to Ed.
"It's cold man!" Ed called as he sat in a lawn chair over by his fire.
"We're all cold!" I argued with him. Ed seemed pissed but was distracted by Shane.
"Cold doesn't change the rules, does it? Keep our fires low. Just embers so we can't be seen from a distance?" Shane asked. Ed slumped further into his lawn chair.
"I said it's cold man! You should mind your business for once.
"You should stop endangering the group for once!" I yelled over at him. He's so disrespectful. He does everything for his own benefit.
"June! Stop, Shane can take care of it," Glenn told me as Shane got up and went over to Ed. Everyone was quite worried because of last time. I glared over at Ed as Shane talked to him. I couldn't hear them from where I was though.
"What's up with him?" Rick asked, noticing the concerned expressions on the groups' faces. The group really didn't know how to explain howawful he was?
"Ed is…" Dale started but didn't know how to describe Ed.
"A child," I finished Dale's sentence. I stared at Rick as I said this.
"June-" Glenn began to speak. I didn't pay mind to him at the moment.
"He's more of a child than I am. He throws a temper tantrum everytime he doesn't get what he wants. And he sits on his ass all day, refusing to help," I continued telling Rick.
"June, we don't want another fight," Dale said, watching to see if Ed heard me.
"She's not wrong," Lori commented, snuggling closer to Rick. Glenn shot Lori a look.
"Don't encourage her," Glenn said in reference to me.
"I'm not encouraging- June, please don't say things like that so close to Ed. In private only, okay?" Lori told me. I nodded to her in response.
"See, she understands just fine," Lori said just as Shane returned with Sofia. Sofia curled up to me, squeezing in between me and Dale. Shane sat beside Dale and seemed irritated with his conversation with Ed. I was annoyed with Ed too.
"Has anyone given any thought to Daryl Dixon? He won't be happy to hear that his brother was found in the city just to be left behind," Dale said. I hope Daryl comes back soon. I miss him already.
"I'll tell him. I dropped the key. It's on me," T-Dog said, taking the blame. Rick shook his head and spoke up.
"No, I cuffed him, that makes it mine," Rick replied.
"I was the reason he ran off. I should tell him," I said, taking responsibility for him.
"Guys, it's not a competition. I don't mean to bring race into this, but it might sound better coming from a white guy," Glenn recommenended.
"I did what I did. I'm not gonna hide from it," T-Dog accepted the fault again.
"We could lie," Amy offered.
"Or tell the truth," Andrea started. "Merle was completely out of control. Something had to be done or he would have gotten us killed. Your husband did what was necessary." Andrea direct that last comment to Lori and Rick, assuring them that it was the right decision.
"If Merle got left behind, it was no one's fault but Merle's," Andrea finished her statement. I knew she was right but he still didn't deserve what happened.
"And that's what we tell Daryl? I don't see a rational discussion coming from that, do you?" Dale brought up.
"Word to the wise, we are going to have our hands full when he gets back from his hunting trip," Dale told us.
"I was scared and I ran. I'm not ashamed of it," T-Dog admitted.
"We were all scared. We all ran. What's your point?" Andrea questioned.
"I stopped long enough to chain that door. The staircase is narrow. Maybe a dozen geeks can squeeze against it at any one time. It's not enough to break through that- Not that chain, not that padlock. My point is Dixon's alive and he's still up there handcuffed on that roof. That's on us," T-Dog stated before leaving the group.
"He's still just… up there?" I asked, horrified.
"Yeah, he is," Glenn looked disappointed in himself.
"We're going to go get him? Right?" I asked Glenn.
"I don't know…" Glenn spoke in a hushed, solemn tone.
"You dont know?!" I replied.
"June, we'll talk about it in the morning," Glenn said, getting up to go to the tent.
"He could be dead by morning!" I argued.
"I thought you didn't like Merle?" Andrea asked.
"No one deserves to die handcuffed to a rooftop, starving to death," I responded to her.
"She's right. Leaving him there is just inhumane," Rick agreed with me.
"He will survive the night though, so it's time for bed June," Glenn told me. I got up reluctantly followed him. I sighed as he put me to bed.
"Look, June… I'm going to have you stay here with me tomorrow," Glenn started.
"No, Dale and I are going to the highway to put up signs to warn people of the city," I argued back.
"I- Okay, we will do that, but otherwise we stay here," Glenn said. I nodded to him.
"Okay," I replied.
"Alright, Goodnight June. I have first watch soon so I'll come to bed later," Glenn told me, starting to zip up the tent. I yawned and replied to him.
"Goodnight, Glenn," I rolled over in my sleeping bag and snuggled in. I fell asleep soon after. Little did I know, I was going to have a big adventure tomorrow.
Okay, so I liked having the little vote of sorts last time, so I'll leave the next chapter up to you…
Should June…
A. Go into the city when Daryl gets back?
B. Go to the highway with Dale?
I'm leaving voting open for two days.
