Harry and Sev landed gently in the entrance hall of Longbottom Manor and saw Madam Longbottom and another wizard in a black robe with his face hidden by the hood. Sev knew it was her brother, Unspeakable Croaker, Head of the Department of Mysteries. They were waiting for them with wands drawn.
Sev put his hands up but Madam Longbottom's attention was drawn to the boy next to him with emerald green eyes.
"Sweet Merlin, that's Lily's son, Harry Potter." Madam Longbottom said. "You don't look a bit like your picture in the Daily Prophet and all those adventure books."
"Oh, sorry. I accidentally removed the headmaster's charms that made me look the image of my father." Harry replied.
"Oh, you look better for it and no one will recognise you without your glasses and scar." She replied. "I am Madam Augusta Longbottom, Regent of The Noble and Most Ancient House of Longbottom."
She presented her hand and Sev gestured Harry forward with a nod of his head, and Harry bow and kissed it the back of her hand.
Madam Longbottom smiled. "Now, Severus. Why do you have Harry Potter?"
"May I lower my hands?"
"Yes, of course but no tricky movements."
"Thank you. Where to start? After that terrible night in 81, Dumbledore dumped Harry on the doorstep of Lily's Muggle sister, Petunia, where for ten long difficult years Harry suffered in ignorance of magic and who he was. Then two weeks ago they were attacked by the Dark er Vol…"
"It is okay, I am not afraid of the name, but I had not heard of any attack." Madam Longbottom replied.
"It was in Harry's Muggle relatives' home and he defeated Voldemort again." Severus replied.
"He is back?" Madam Longbottom questioned.
"Never really left actually." Severus replied.
"He was a black mist that came out of my scar." Harry volunteered. "And I kicked his bum when he tried to kill Aunt Petunia."
"A wraith came from your scar? May I?" Croaker asked as he stepped forward with his wand and waved it over Harry. He detected the faint fading trace of dark magic. "Damn, that old fool. That's the reason why he is so convinced that Voldemort is not completely dead. You say Voldemort attacked you two weeks ago?"
"Yes, it was the evening of my birthday, July 31st." Harry replied as Madam Longbottom took note. "I had just returned from Diagon Alley after getting my school stuff with Hagrid, and I was practicing the General Counterspell in the mirror."
"You were practicing magic?" Croaker asked,
"Er, yes. The Dursleys had a disagreement with Hagrid and my cousin Dudley ended up with a tail. I thought if I could remove it, then the Dursleys wouldn't punish me for all the Acceptance Letters the headmaster sent." Harry explained. "But the counterspell reflected back from the mirror and hit my scar and removed all the charms the headmaster had placed on me to look like the image my father. The wraith came out of my scar and attacked Aunt Petunia."
Sev continued. "Petunia realised the headmaster had lied to her. He had promised protection and the Dark Lord was trying to kill her inside her own home. She realised the danger her family was in. She remembered me and decided to leave Harry with me while her family left the country to escape the headmaster."
"Oh?"
"Petunia wanted to transfer Harry's guardianship to me but as you know, I have an issue with the headmaster, and I suggested that it would be better to sign the guardianship over to you, Madam Longbottom." Sev said as he opened Petunia's letter and gave it to her.
She read it and smiled. "That will upset the headmaster's plans. But why not your friend, Malfoy?"
"Logical, but Lucius would murder Harry at the first chance and probably me to eliminate any witnesses. Then try to steal the Potter fortune. Plus Harry is Lily's son."
"Okay. Why didn't you take him to your master, Dumbledore?"
"Dumbledore lied to me. He said that Harry was safe and loved, when he knew he wouldn't be. His reminders of Harry coming to Hogwarts and his appearance as the image of his father, made it obvious that he was actually setting me up to hate Harry from the moment I saw him. That would have ruined things between Harry and I, and made life very difficult for everyone except the headmaster." Sev explained.
"Fair enough. Well are you okay with this, Harry?"
"Yes, Madam Longbottom. I don't particularly like the headmaster and Sev er Professor Snape said that you hate the headmaster more than my Aunt Petunia does and you have already broken his big crooked nose." Harry replied.
Madam Longbottom smiled and held up three fingers.
"You have broken his big crooked nose three times. I like you already." Harry charmed her.
"There is a bit of your father in you after all, Harry. He was a cheeky charmer too." She smiled and asked. "And you survived two weeks with him?"
"Oh, yes, we had a lot of fun, Madam Longbottom. We brewed potions, went flying, swimming and even visited a museum."
"Oh? Well, you may address me as Gran, Harry, like Neville does." She turned to Severus. "So whose side are you on?"
"Harry's!" Sev answered without hesitation. "He has beaten the Dark Lord twice."
"And he is my spy to save as many as possible." Harry added.
Madam Longbottom looked at them both and then said. "Well I supposed it will be okay for you to act as in loco parentis for Harry while he is at Hogwarts and protect him from the headmaster. Be warned, he is not in a good mood at the moment."
"Oh?" Sev asked.
"Yeah, someone returned their spare Acceptance Letters and they exploded in his face. He has been in a coma and Minnie is so hopping mad at the abuse and waste of parchment that I can't understand her Scottish burr. He only woke up this morning and has been running around looking for something." She chuckled as she looked at Harry. "So it would be good if you can protect Harry at Hogwarts."
"Thank you, Madam Longbottom." Severus continued. "If I may, here are some tonic potions to help Harry recover from his past and I would suggest you take him to St Mungo's incognito and have him checked out. It would be a good idea if you can take him to Gringotts as the headmaster has his gold key."
Madam Longbottom nodded. "I was going to do that anyway, but if the headmaster has his gold key, we need to do that first."
Sev nodded and continued.
"Also, I have a peace offering. A phial of Phoenix Tears from Fawkes that may help your Frank and Alice. I asked Fawkes and he gave them willingly." He presented the small crystal phial. "Back in 81 the headmaster asked me to brew a number of difficult potions to prove and certify that I was qualified to teach Potions at Hogwarts. He asked me to brew a pint of Pure Draught of Peace, a wee half gill of overproof Draught of Living Death and a gill of concentrated Dreamless Sleep Potion. At the time there was so much going on that I didn't give it a second thought. But if the overproof Draught of Living Death and the concentrated Dreamless Sleep Potion had been used together on the same patient their mind may never wake up completely. The only possible antidote would be Phoenix tears."
Madam Longbottom nodded slowly and asked. "What is the treatment for exposure to the Cruciatus Curse?"
Croaker replied. "Diluted Draught of Living Death to relax the muscles and ease the shaking and diluted Dreamless Sleep Potion to ease the mind."
Sev could tell that Madam Longbottom was furious with the headmaster and he knew what the old fool would say, "that, he was just trying to help and there must have been an unfortunate mix-up at St Mungo's.'
Betsy, the Longbottom house-elf, popped in with a tray with a bottle of Ogden's Old Firewhisky and two glasses. Croaker poured the Firewhisky for himself and his sister to calm down.
Madam Longbottom looked Sev in the eye. While she was furious with the old fool, Severus had given her reason to hope she might get all of her family back. Slowly she said. "Thank you, Severus. I will make sure that it used wisely."
Sev nodded. "If I may suggest that you move them to your home as there are too many who owe favours to the headmaster."
Madam Longbottom smiled. "Good idea."
Then Sev carefully took out the Longbottom Cloak of Invisibility. "This was left in my home to frame me for the attack on your home."
Madam Longbottom reacted. "That has been missing since that night. How did you get it?"
"Peter Pettigrew left it in my home so it could be found there. I smelt his stench on it."
"Impossible! Black had already murdered Pettigrew. Fudge saw it happen."
Severus shook his head. "Pettigrew is a rat Animagus and a marked Death Eater, and used that idiot Black to fake his death and murder those poor Muggles. The rat is very much alive and well, and has been attending Hogwarts for the last four years. The rat had boasted about how much the dark lord would reward him for being the Secret Keeper, and betrayer of James and Lily, and then Bellatrix Lestrange encouraged him to lead her here to attack your family."
"Pettigrew is alive and Black is innocent?" Madam Longbottom questioned.
Severus nodded. "Black may be an imbecile but he is not a murderer and was thrown into Azkaban without a trial by Dumbledore, Crouch and Bagnold."
"And the Death Eaters know this?"
"It was a private joke against the fools who blindly followed Dumbledore."
"And you know where the rat is now?"
Severus nodded. "You didn't hear it from me but the rat is hiding as a pet rat for Percy Weasley. I spotted the rat wandering about the castle and tracked him back to the boy."
"What?"
"And he is not the only one who is not dead." Severus continued. "Barty Crouch junior is alive and well under the care of his father."
"WHAT? How do you know that?"
"I had brewed some extended time Polyjuice Potion for the headmaster, and Barty Crouch was in the headmaster's office when I delivered it to him. The headmaster used my witness of who received the Polyjuice Potion as insurance to ensure Crouch kept his side to whatever poisoned bargain he had signed in blood with the headmaster. Then a week later Barty junior was reported to have died suddenly in Azkaban after a mercy visit from his parents. Then Crouch's ill wife reportedly died soon after that. Then Crouch resigned from the DMLE for family issues after his family had passed. Something that the headmaster wanted as Crouch was hunting down Death Eaters with a vengeance after he had sent his only son to Azkaban."
"I always wonder why Barty left."
Sev continued. "I checked Lucius' Little Black Book and Barty Crouch junior is still on the NOC list."
Madam Longbottom was not surprised at yet another betrayal. But she had to wonder. "So, why are you telling me this?"
Harry answered. "It is part of his punishment to make right what went wrong that night. Catching the rat and junior should be enough to sideline Dumbledore, Crouch and Fudge, and free an innocent Sirius Black from Azkaban."
"If you are going after Barty Crouch senior, finding Barty Crouch junior would be a nasty little surprise." Severus explained. "Of course, I have played no part in this insane scheme, and will deny everything."
"Of course. No one would ever suspect you of helping Sirius Black." Croaker answered as he looked at Severus's left arm. He could see it was different from his right arm. "How is your dark mark?"
"Er, it is changing and I feel a little drained." Severus answered carefully.
Croaker continued. "I was here when your owl arrived. I had come to inform Aggie that Bellatrix Lestrange had died last night. Her left arm had withered over the last two weeks and drained her life force."
"Oh?"
"In fact all the Death Eaters in Azkaban had died the same painful way except for Sirius Black, and now we know why." Croaker explained. "For the valuable information you have freely given, I will offer to remove your left arm and your dark mark otherwise you will die too."
"Oh?"
"Remove his arm?" Harry questioned. "Sev, would you like me to try the counterspell?"
Sev turned to Harry. "I thought about it, Harry, but the Dark Mark is connected to the Dark Lord, and you and the Dark Lord don't mix well. I was afraid that I might blow up my left arm."
"Oh?" Harry realised that was a possibility. "But he wants to cut off your arm."
"Sacrifices need to be made Harry."
"I will include that as part of your punishments." Harry offered.
"Very well." Severus said as he held out his left arm as Croaker gave him a questioning look. "Harry forgave me, so get on with it."
Croaker nodded and called for the Longbottom elf. "Betsy, could you fetch two gold cauldrons please."
The elf popped away and returned with two gold cauldrons.
Croaker used his wand to cut off Severus' left arm and then transfigured the two gold cauldrons into a gold replacement left arm and attached it to his stump.
"Cool." Harry said as Sev admired his new left arm. Because he was a potions master, Croaker had given him the special deal with six fingers and two opposing thumbs in magically enchanted gold.
Severus nodded a heartfelt thank you. He could feel a dark burden lifted from his shoulders and the drain on his life force was gone as what was left of his old left arm shriveled and turned to dust on the floor.
Harry turned to Gran. "Will you help us get Sirius Black out of this Azkaban?"
Gran smiled. "I am afraid that would be impossible, Harry."
"But, why?" Harry asked fearfully.
Sev saw the smile and coughed. "It would be impossible, Harry, because Black is not in Azkaban anymore."
"What? Where is he?" Harry asked with growing concern as a big black Grim ran into the room and tackled Harry to the floor. "Padfoot!"
Harry hugged the Grim and he licked his face.
Sev looked at the happy reunion and then looked at Croaker.
There was a smile in Croaker's voice. "You story matched the strange tale Black told us this morning. It was obvious that Black wasn't a Death Eater and he said that he hasn't been given a trial. I read his mind to confirm it. So he couldn't stay in Azkaban and I brought him here for safekeeping."
"Safekeeping?" Harry asked as he looked at Sev.
Sev pinched the bridge of his nose. "Dumbledore still needs Black out of the way so he could have complete control over you, Harry, but he had to be kept alive to thwart Lucius Malfoy's claim on the Black fortune."
"Oh, Dumbledore again. Does he interfere in everything?" Harry asked as the Grim transformed into a thin hairy unkempt wizard.
"Yes!"
Said Sev, Gran, Croaker and Sirius together.
"So, what do we do?" Harry asked.
Croaker spoke. "Well, whatever you did to Voldemort two weeks ago, it has caused a catastrophic devastating failure to whatever dark evil magic he did to avoid death, and it is slowly draining the life force of his marked Death Eaters. Once they are gone, I expect Voldemort, wherever he is, will lose whatever connection is holding him in the land of the living and cross over."
"Oh? But that leaves Dumbledore."
"Yes it does."
"And Sirius will not be safe and I won't be safe while Dumbledore is still around." Harry pointed out.
"Probably." Croaker agreed.
Then Sev smiled conspiratorially. "Might I suggest you go after the rat first as it will be feeling the drain on his dark mark and you don't want him running away again? For Barty Crouch senior and junior, I would suggest that you let Auror Corban Yaxley overhear that the rat has been found and there might be a problem with the 'conviction' of Sirius Black by Barty Crouch."
"Yaxley?" Madam Longbottom queried.
Severus nodded Slytherinly. "Yaxley is a marked Death Eater who wasn't exposed and was their spy in the DMLE and Aurors. He wouldn't want anyone investigating Peter Pettigrew. He will report to Malfoy and Fudge, and they will go after Black as it was the capture of Black by Fudge that open the door for him to become the Minister of Magic. When they can't find him they will go after a scapegoat to blame and arrest Barty Crouch. I doubt neither father nor son will go quietly and if they live, they will blame junior's escape on Dumbledore."
Madam Longbottom looked at her brother who nodded and added. "Fudge, Umbridge, Yaxley and particularly Lucius Malfoy would not want Sirius Black alive and free, nor Peter Pettigrew resurrected and questioned as he would know all their secrets, Dumbledore's included. I concur with Severus. Pettigrew is a big problem for them and they would go after Sirius and the rat. Failing that use Barty as a scapegoat. Barty will fight for his son and that could eliminate some of the problems. None of them are innocent and they will react viciously to the threat of Sirius and Pettigrew, and more innocents could perish in the crossfire."
"I concur." Madam Longbottom replied. "Thank you, Severus."
Severus nodded.
Croaker continued. "It is a good Slytherin plan, Severus."
Sev smiled. "One does learn to be a true Slytherin after spending so much time in the presence of the headmaster."
Croaker nodded. "We should be able discredit him if we catch the rat before the Death Eater dark mark disease kills him."
"Of course, he was the spy in the old fool's Order of the Phoenix, and must have betrayed more than James and Lily, and Frank and Alice." Sirius reasoned.
The mood was turning against the headmaster, when there was a rushing sound overhead and a lone school Screech owl flew in, circled the hall and dropped a red envelope into the new left hand of Severus, and fled the building not waiting for a reply.
Severus looked at it as though he expected it to explode.
Madam Longbottom saw the name on the red envelope and recognised the loopy writing. "The headmaster has sent you a Howler, Severus."
Croaker waved his wand over it. "It doesn't have any Portkey attached. Just open it, son."
"What's a Howler?" Harry asked.
But Sev's whole attention was fixed on the letter, which had begun to smoke at the corners.
"Open it," Croaker urged. "It'll all be over in a few minutes —"
Sev stretched out his shaking right hand, and slit it open. Madam Longbottom and Croaker stuffed their fingers in their ears. A split second later, Harry knew why as the red envelope formed a mouth with big sharp teeth and screamed. He thought for a moment it had exploded; a roar of sound filled the entrance hall, shaking dust from the ceiling.
"SEVERUS, MY BOY. WHERE IN MERLIN'S NAME ARE YOU? YOU WAIT TILL I GET HOLD OF YOU, I DON'T SUPPOSE YOU STOPPED TO THINK WHAT I WENT THROUGH WHEN I SAW THE DAMAGE TO MY OFFICE —"
The headmaster voice yells, a hundred times louder than usual, made the pictures and displays rattle, and echoed deafeningly off the stone walls.
"—I DIDN'T BRING YOU UP TO BEHAVE LIKE THIS! HARRY IS MISSING AND COULD HAVE DIED —"
Harry had been wondering when his name was going to crop up. He tried very hard to block his ears with his fingers as the voice that was making his eardrums throb. This headmaster was insane.
"—ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED — YOU MAY FACE AN INQUIRY AT THE CASTLE, IT'S ENTIRELY ALL YOUR FAULT AND IF YOU PUT ANOTHER TOE OUT OF LINE I WILL SEND YOU STRAIGHT TO AZKABAN! GET HERE NOW!"
A ringing silence fell. The red envelope, which had dropped from Sev's hand, burst into flames and curled into ashes. Harry and Sev stood stunned, as though a tidal wave had just passed over them.
"Oh! Someone is in trouble." Sirius chuckled. "James and I never upset him that much."
"Shut it, Black!" Sev replied and then reasoned. "Well, I have to return to the castle straight away, and I expect Dumbledore will want me to accompany him to check the Dursleys to find Harry. So, I should be able to keep him distracted and give you a chance to collect the rat."
Sirius and Croaker nodded as Harry hugged Sev and added. "Please don't open my cupboard under the stairs."
"Why?" Sev asked.
Harry corrected with a wink. "Please don't you open my cupboard under the stairs. It will be quite alright if this foolish headmaster does."
"Oh? Okay, duly noted. Keep clear of the cupboard under the stairs." Sev understood and then turned to Black. "Before school starts, I would like to have a word in private with you, Black."
Sirius looked at Snape and then slowly nodded.
Sev added. "Don't go all Gryffindor and get yourself killed!"
Sirius nodded again as Sev turned to Harry.
"Very well. I must go now, Harry. Be good." Sev said as Harry gave him a final hug. Then Sev turned to Madam Longbottom. "May I use your Floo?"
"Yes, of course. Go to the Leaky Cauldron first."
Sev nodded, turned to the fireplace behind them and threw down some Floo powder as he said, "The Leaky Cauldron." He would leave a false trail before he returned to Spinner's End and then the headmaster's office.
In a green flame, he was gone.
Croaker turned to Sirius. "Up for some rat catching?"
Sirius turned to Harry.
Harry nodded. "Go, it's part of the plan. I will be safe here and you need closure."
Sirius hugged his dogson and turned to Croaker.
"Thought you would never ask!" Sirius replied as Croaker took him through the green flames to his home so he could give him an Unspeakable robe to wear and go incognito.

"Well, Harry, that just leaves you and me." Gran said. "I don't notice any trunk."
"Oh, my owls will bring it when I call."
"Owls?"
"Hagrid and Moony gave me Hedwig for my birthday, she is the granddaughter of my mother's owl, Horatio. And Louis is Hedwig's son." Harry explained.
"Oh. Well it is time for you to meet your Godbrother and Godsister. Your mother and her two best friends, my Alice and Celeste Lovegood decided to be Godmothers, but sadly they..." Gran stopped.
"Terrible things happened to good people because of Voldemort and Dumbledore." Harry said as he hugged the old witch.
Comforted, Gran continued. "Luna lost her mother in a tragic accident and her father wasn't coping. He dropped her off for Neville's birthday party last year and went off traveling the world searching for magical creatures, Crumple-Horned Snorkacks or some such thing, and hasn't returned to pick her up. We don't mind though as she has been a ray of sunshine to this old home and helped Neville come out of his shell. They are inseparable."
"It is nice to have friends." Harry agreed. "I am sure we will get along fine."
Gran recomposed herself and then called out. "Neville, Luna."
Neville and Luna weren't far away and ran into the room holding hands. They stopped to look at Harry but he didn't look like the storybooks.
Luna spoke with a smile that lit up the room. "Hi Harry, you look better than your picture in the storybooks and the Daily Prophet."
"Oh? Why thank you, Luna. Hi Neville." Harry said as Luna pulled him into a group hug with Neville.
Neville noticed the silver material in her hand. "What is that, Gran?"
"Oh, this is a family heirloom, the Longbottom Cloak of Invisibility. It belonged to your father, so I suppose it belongs to you now. Use it wisely, Neville."
"Thanks Gran, it is just what we need." Neville said as he wrapped it around his shoulders and caused his head to look like it was floating on nothing.
Gran turned to Harry. "Your father had one, Harry. I would assume that Dumbledore has it now. The headmaster has very sticky fingers."
"Oh? I will have Sev get it back for me." Harry decided.
"Sev?" Neville asked.
"That's Professor Snape. I just spent the last two weeks with him."
"And lived?" Gran asked.
"Yes, why does everyone keep asking that? We had a lot of fun." Harry replied.
"I am on the Board of Governors of Hogwarts, and the headmaster just ignores all the complaints we received from anyone not in Slytherin. Has he really changed that much?" Gran asked.
"Yes, he said he had a lot of anger issues after the death of my mother, and it helped a lot that I don't look like the image of my father and Aunt Petunia forgave him." Harry explained. "And I forgave him but we are still working though his punishments."
"Punishments?" Gran asked.
"Yes, a lot went wrong that night and it seems the headmaster was at the center of it all. Everyone had trusted the wrong wizard." Harry explained. "Anyway, Sev had tried to warn my mother and she was in the process of punishing Sev before she forgave him. So I am just finishing what my mother started."
"That is very mature of you Harry." Gran thought.
"Well, I had to grow up quickly with my relatives. But after I saved them from Voldemort on my birthday. Aunt Petunia thanked me for the first time and then apologized and asked for forgiveness. So I forgave her to close that chapter of my life and I can make a fresh start with my new life in the Magical World. It has been a lot of fun learning about magic and potions and particularly about my mother." Harry explained.
"And your scar is gone." Luna pointed out.
"Yeah, it was a charm that I accidentally removed when I was practicing the counterspell, Finite Incantatem! It took out all the charms Dumbledore had placed on me to ensure I was the image of my father and matched those books."
"Wow." Gran asked. "So what wised you up that the headmaster was not so great?"
"Well, Hagrid gave me my Hogwarts Acceptance Letter and I assumed that I would be going directly to Hogwarts with Hagrid after shopping for my school stuff. But Hagrid gave me my gold Hogwarts Express ticket and tried to return me to my relatives. I explained that they would kill me after all the trouble the headmaster had caused. But Hagrid said it was Dumbledore's orders that I return to the Dursleys. Anyone who would order that I must return to those who hate me, should not have anything to do with children."
"I am sorry for what you have suffered, Harry. I tried to find you but Dumbledore blocked me at every turn." Gran said with a tear forming in her eye.
"Thank you for trying, gran." Harry replied with a warm smile as he hugged her.
"Well, Harry, you can have your own bedroom or Neville has a large bedroom so I can put a second bed in there. Luna has her own bedroom but she doesn't spend much time there."
"Neville would be so lonely without me." Luna smiled.
"Well, it is time for lunch, so are you hungry, Harry?" Gran asked the cheering kids as they ran out to the dining room.
Later they found Hedwig and Louis waiting in Neville's room with Harry's trunk. Harry had saved them some bacon and sausages from lunch.
That afternoon Gran contacted her trusted friend and head healer, Andromeda Tonks, and arranged for Frank and Alice to be moved from St Mungo's to Longbottom Manor. She would have Healer Tonks give Sirius and Harry a full check-up when she was here.

In operation, Hermione's Guardian Angel, Louis found Hermione enjoying the beautiful afternoon reading some books in the shade of a large old oak tree. Sadly the yapping little terror from next door thought it might be safe to go outside and continue to disturb the peace.
Louis wouldn't accept having Hermione's beautiful afternoon ruined and went stealth mode as he silently dive-bombed the little nuisance and emptied his bowels all over the yapping dog's face. As the snowy owl was twice the size, that bowel movement was quite a lot.
As the yapping nuisance didn't see or hear the snowy owl, and was yapping at the wrong moment, so some got inside it mouth and left a really bad taste. It ran inside the house and made a bigger mess, judging from the loud reaction of the little dog's annoying mistress.
After that Hermione enjoyed her beautiful afternoon reading in peace and quiet while her witchy senses were tingling that someone was watching over her.
