Chapter 4: The First Gym Battle! Vs. Rock–Type Leader Brock!
Michael slowly opened his eyes, but then felt something on his chest when he tried to sit up. He turned his head to see that Ruby and Weiss had decided to sleep with him sometime during the night. He then slowly shook them awake.
Michael - "Ruby. Weiss. Wake up."
Both girls slowly opened their eyes and sat up. They then quickly took in their current situation.
Ruby - "Michael we are so sorry."
Michael held up a hand to stop them.
Michael - "It's ok. You two couldn't sleep, could you?"
Weiss - "Not without you."
Michael - "Come here then."
Michael wrapped both girls in a loving hug.
Michael - "I love you both so much."
Ruby/Weiss - "We love you too Michael."
Rarity then walked into the room with a towel wrapped around her neck.
Rarity - "Morning you three."
Weiss - "Morning Rarity. Did you just take a shower?"
Rarity - "Yes I did. Took it after an early morning jog with my Pokémon. It's still open if you guys want to use it."
Michael - "You two first then. I'll wait for my turn."
Ruby - "Thanks Michael."
Ruby quickly rushed out of the room before someone took the shower on her.
Rarity - "Well today's the day Michael."
Michael - "Yep. Badge number one will be mine."
Weiss - "Are you nervous?"
Michael - "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. But I just need to steel those nerves and focus on the battle in front of me."
Rarity - "That's the can-do spirit we know you have."
Ruby then returned from her shower.
Ruby - "Your turn Weiss."
Weiss - "Thank you Ruby."
Weiss got up and went to take her shower, while took her place on the bed next to Michael.
Ruby - "I only heard the tail end of what you three were talking about. However, I also agree with Rarity and Weiss."
Rarity - "You agree with us Ruby?"
Ruby - "Yeah. Michael needs every one of us to fully support. He is our leader and a future League Champion after all."
Michael chuckled at Ruby's answer.
Michael - "Thanks for the vote of confidence Ruby."
Ruby - "Not at all Michael. After all, Weiss, Twilight, and I are dating you. So, the three of us need to show you constant love and support during your battles."
Michael - "Awww thanks."
Ruby kissed Michael on the cheek.
Ruby - "Not at all big guy."
Weiss then returned from her shower.
Weiss - "All you Michael."
Michael - "Thanks Weiss. Why don't you girls go grab a table for us? I'm join up after my shower here."
Rarity - "Good idea Michael. See you in a bit then."
Michael left the room to take his shower. Once he made sure he was fully clean, he returned to the room and got dressed. Michael then made his way out to the lobby and joined the girls for breakfast. Soon they finished eating and made their way over to the gym. They stopped in front of it and looked up.
Ruby - "Here we go."
Rarity and Weiss nodded in agreement.
Michael - "Well then. Time to show the world who's the true boss around here."
They then entered the gym. Michael took his spot on the one end of the battlefield, while the girls went into the stands. Most of Michael's Pokémon followed them, including his Aerodactyl. The lights then dimmed as Brock entered from the other side of the gym.
Brock - "Welcome challenger."
Brock was the surprised to see who his challenger was.
Brock - "Well, well. I see the infamous Michael Masi is finally making his Gym Battle debut."
Michael - "Yes I am. I'm also hoping to have a very fun battle against you too Brock."
Brock - "I'm sure you understand the rules during a gym battle?"
Michael - "Both sides use the same number of Pokémon. The battle continues until all Pokémon on one side are unable to battle anymore. And the challenger is the only one that can sub out their Pokémon whenever they want to."
Brock - "All correct. However, Pokémon HQ has decided to expand the rule on number of Pokémon used by challengers."
Michael - "How so?"
Brock - "League HQ passed a rule stating that all gym challengers are now allowed to use as many Pokémon as they want, up to a full team of six, for their gym battles."
Michael - "Huh. Guess professor Oak just forget to tell me about this new rule when he got me registered for the League a few days ago."
Brock - "Well the rule was only passed last week. So, a lot of people are trying to get used to it as well, myself included."
Michael - "That's fair then."
Soon a referee, named Tim, appeared on the judge's stand. Michael also noticed the cameras floating around the battlefield.
Michael - "What's with the cameras?"
Brock - "Because of how big your name has gotten, especially due to happened over a week ago. The League has decided to broadcast your gym battles whenever you decide to challenge a region's Pokémon League."
Michael - "Good. Means I have more people to prove myself against then."
Across Kanto, as well as every region, everyone was glued to the TV screens, hoping to see how much this genius prodigy would succeed.
Tim - "This is the Pewter City Gym Battle between Gym Leader Brock and the challenger Michael Masi of Pokémon Island. The battle will be two Vs. all. The battle will continue until all Pokémon on one side are unable to continue. Only the challenger can switch out their Pokémon. Are both sides ready?"
Brock - "Ready!"
Michael - "Let's get this show on the road!"

Battle: Challenger Michael Masi (6) Vs. Gym Leader Brock (2)
Brock - "Go Geodude!"
Michael - "Froakie I choose you!"
Match #1: Froakie Vs. Geodude
Tim - "Froakie Vs. Geodude! Begin!"
Michael - "Field card activate! Raining Fortune!"
Brock - "Crap I never prepared for a field card."
Michael - "Thanks to this field card, not only is the current weather rain, but all Water-Type moves gains a 50% boost in power. Not only that, but all Fire-Type, Rock-Type, and Ground-Type moves have their power cut by 50%, all Water-Type and Electric-Type moves have 100% accuracy, and all Water-Type Pokémon regain a small bit of their health at the end of each turn."
Brock - "Rats. He's mastered the field cards already."
Michael - "Froakie use Water Pulse! Normally Water Pulse has an initial power value of 60. But here it's much stronger than that."
Brock - "How so?"
Michael - "First there's the STAB, or Same Type Attack Bonus, since both Froakie and Water Pulse are both Water-Types."
Water Pulse's Power: 60 + 30 = 90
Michael - "Then you have the 50% boosts from Raining Fortune and the Rain itself."
Water Pulse's Power: 90 + 45 = 135 + 67.5 = 202.5
Michael - "Then finally I activate Water Booster and Defense Cutter, raising Water Pulse's current power by another 20%, as well as sharply dropping Geodude's Defense and Special Defense by two stages. The effects of these two cards will last for three turns."
Water Pulse's Power: 202.5 + 40.5 = 243
Geodude: Defense –2, Special Defense –2
Brock - "I counter with Water Shield! This cuts Water Pulse's current power in half!"
Michael - "But it's still not enough."
Water Pulse's Power: 243/2 = 121.5 x 4 = 486
The super powered Water Pulse hit Geodude square in the face, sending him flying into the wall behind Brock. Geodude then fell to the floor with swirls in its eyes.
Tim - "Geodude is unable to battle! Froakie wins!"
Brock returned Geodude to his Poké Ball.
Brock - "You tried your best Geodude."
Suddenly, Froakie was surrounded in a bright light. Then the light disappeared to show Frogadier.
Michael - "Sweet. Congrats on evolving Frogadier."
Frogadier - "Thanks Michael."
Tim - "Challenger Michael. Will you switch Pokémon?"
Michael looked at Frogadier, who nodded in understanding.
Michael - "Return Frogadier. Let your sister have some fun too."
Frogadier - "Sure thing Michael."
Frogadier jumped back towards Michael, landing near his feet.
Michael - "Popplio I choose you!"
Popplio came out of her Poké Ball. She then looked towards Michael and noticed Frogadier.
Popplio - "Congrats on evolving big bro."
Frogadier - "Thanks sis. Here's hoping that you evolve too."
Brock - "Go Onix!"
Michael, Popplio, and Frogadier stared at the Rock Snake Pokémon in from of them.
Michael - "It's now or never Popplio. Let's win and get that Boulder Badge!"
Popplio - "Right!"
(Music Ends)
Match #2: Popplio Vs. Onix
(Insert Music: Pokemon BW2 OST – Victory Is Right Before Your Eyes)
Tim - "Popplio Vs. Onix! Begin!"
Michael drew a card from his deck and gave Popplio an attack order.
Michael - "Popplio! Aqua Jet to get rid of Onix's Sturdy ability!"
Brock - "Oh no!"
Aqua Jet hit its mark, dealing a good amount of to Onix while also keeping its Sturdy ability from activating.
Brock - "Oh well then. Onix! Trap Popplio with Bind!"
Onix wrapped himself Popplio, trapping her in his grip.
Michael - "No Popplio!"
Frogadier - "Break out of there sis!"
Suddenly, Popplio was enveloped in a bright light. The light then disappeared as not Popplio, but a new Pokemon broke free from Onix's grip.
Michael - "Alright! Popplio's now a Brionne!"
Brionne - "Happy to be of service Michael!"
Michael - "Now use Water Gun and end this battle!"
Brionne - "Right!"
Brock - "No! I have nothing to stop this because of the Field Card!"
Water Gun's Power: 40 + 20 = 60 + 30 = 90 + 45 = 135
Michael - "Now I activate Water Booster, Water Sword, Attack Booster, and Defense Cutter!"
Water Gun's Power: 135 x 2 = 270 + 54 = 324 x 4 = 1,296
Brionne: Attack +2, Special Attack +2
Onix: Defense –2, Special Defense –2
Brock could only smile, acknowledging his utter defeat at Michael's hands. Onix was completely pushed back. He stood up for a second longer, then fell to the ground with swirls in his eyes.
(Music Ends)
Tim - "Onix is unable to battle! Brionne wins! Both of Gym Leader Brock's Pokémon are unable to battle, so the winner of the battle is the challenger, Michael Masi!"
Michael - "We did it! I'm so proud of you both."
Brock silently returned Onix.
Brock - "Well I got soundly beat."
Meanwhile, Ruby, Rarity, and Weiss walked over to Michael.
Weiss - "Congrats Michael."
Ruby - "Yeah. That was an awesome battle."
Rarity - "I also got some good notes out of it as well."
Brock then walked over to Michael, who was congratulating Frogadier and Brionne on a job well done.
Brock - "Well done. I'll admit I didn't think I was gonna get beaten that badly at all."
Michael - "Sorry Brock. I'm not one for holding back if it means getting a sure-fire win."
Brock - "That's ok. Anyway."
Tim walked over carrying a tray, which was carrying the gym badge.
Brock - "In accordance with Pokémon League rules, I present you with the Boulder Badge."
Brock then took the badge off of the tray and handed it to Michael, who took it eagerly.
Michael - "Alright! Our first Gym win! We just got the Boulder Badge!"
Frogadier and Brionne joined in the celebration.
Brock - "For your next gym battle, I recommend Cerulean City to the East."
Michael - "Thanks Brock. Come on girls. To the Poké Center to heal up and prepare."
Ruby/Weiss/Rarity - "Right!"
Michael and the girls returned to the Poké Center, where he got Frogadier and Brionne healed up, then contacted the professors.
Oak - "Ah Michael. Congrats on your win at the Pewter City Gym."
Michael - "Thanks professor Oak. And also, here's my PokéDex so far."

Akira - "And there's also a surprise for you Michael."
Michael - "What is it?"
Akira waved to someone that was off screen to her left. Then in came Hilda and Alice carrying a Metapod and Kakuna.
Michael - "Hey. Caterpie and Weedle evolved."
Mordred - "Yeah. We were helping them train a bit so they wouldn't fall behind those you have with you big bro."
Michael - "I had been wondering why it counted them as caught for a while now."
Rowan - "That would be Akira's doing. When Oak was registering you for the Indigo League, she snuck in a program that would automatically record any Pokémon you left at the manor with your parents and sisters as caught should they evolve over there. Very genius if I do say so myself."
Michael - "Aw. Thanks Akira."
Akira - "Anything to help my older twin fill up the PokéDex for the professors."
Birch - "It's also nice to see that at least two of the starters evolved already."
Michael - "Yeah. Cyndaquil and Chimchar evolved during yesterday's training. And as you all saw, Froakie and Popplio evolved during the gym battle. I'm sure by the time I update you all on my PokéDex in Cerulean City, all twenty-one will have evolved to their first stage evolutions. Oh, and Pidgey too."
Juniper - "OK Michael. You all take care now."
After ending the call, Michael and the girls quickly headed on to the Poké Mart to stock up on Potions and Poké Balls. Then they left Pewter City and headed east towards Cerulean City. Along the way, Michael caught a Spearow, Sandshrew, Mankey, and Ekans. He kept Sandshrew and sent the rest to his parents and sisters at the manor.
Rarity - "Keeping Sandshrew for Lt. Surge?"
Michael - "Mhmm. That and I'm a big fan of Sandslash. By the way Ruby, Weiss. If the both of you want to, you can make use of Sandshrew and Vulpix's Alolan forms. Both are Ice-Types, with Alolan Sandshrew also being part Steel-Type."
Ruby - "Oh I like that idea. How about it Weiss? You take Alolan Vulpix, and I get Alolan Sandshrew."
Weiss - "Deal."
Both girls shook on it.
Rarity - "You and I better make sure they keep to this agreement Michael."
Michael - "Oh I intend to."
Soon night fell as they arrived at the Poké Center.
Michael - "Ok girls. Let's rest here for the night, then make our way through Mt. Moon in the morning."
Girls - "OK."
The four of them got a room, then got changed for bed and fell asleep as soon as their heads hit the pillow.
