CHAPTER 3

"Right. Left. High kick. Roundhouse. Block right." Subconsciously Yang was thinking of every move in her head, the new limbs she was getting used to, not feeling slow per say, but after three weeks they'd only just begun to feel natural. Halcyone was her sparring partner in a sense. One thing Yang took full use of was Halcyone's ability to implant false memories in her brain as if they were real. It was sort of like brainwashing… Well technical it was, but Yang trusted Halcyone not to do anything with her head she would be upset with. That and the benefits of compressing almost two months of combative practice, against both Grimm and human foes cooked up in her own mind, into a one week period of on and off brain melts, was far too good to pass up. Yang was honestly surprised Halcyone hadn't thought to practice with her team sooner… It didn't make the nightmares go away.

With one last well placed punch Yang felt her metallic knuckles break the jaw of her simulated opponent, the final White Fang grunt slumping over, defeated. "How'd I do?" Yang asked, spinning in place to see if Halcyone had made herself appear yet.

"You did great, as always. Probably better than with your organic parts." Halcyone said, before the hyena faunus cocked her head to the side as she made herself visible. "You having any issues with sensation?" She asked, as Yang looked down to her hands.

"The feedback receptors feel like what my old skin felt when I touched stuff. Getting hit in the funny bone still sucks even when you don't have a funny bone." Yang said, earning a snicker from Halcyone.

"You, with a funny bone in your body? That's rich." Halcyone said.

"You're still laughing aren't you?" Yang asked. Halcyone shrugged.

"What can I say, I'm a hyena faunus... Ready to go again?" Halcyone asked, Yang nodded, and the forest around her shifted into a nightclub she knew too well. Halcyone stood across the dance floor from her now, Road Rage at the ready.

"Really? You want to fight me?" Yang asked, pointing to her girlfriend.

"I ain't as weak as seem." Halcyone said with a smirk.

Yang shrugged before walking forward, fists raised. Halcyone stepped forward and sliced back and forth into the glass dance floor with the tip of Road Rage. With a high swing, Halcyone chopped down on Yang, only for the blond brawler to go on the inside and roll Halcyone over her shoulder. Landing on her feet, the hyena faunus pulled away from Yang, and spun herself to slice at Yang's abdomen. Yang took a step back, then reengaged as Halcyone was open. Halcyone ducked into the swing she had taken, then leaned back and blocked with the flat of her blade, braced by her free hand. At a half step back, Halcyone slid the length of her blade spine against her hand, and with a wrist twirl forced Yang to intercept the light swing with a forearm block. As the blade bounced off her gauntlet, Yang found that she had to block the rebound strike, as Halcyone had shifted the energy from her first light swing into a second one with a flick of her wrist. With her left arm free again, Yang made to punch at Halcyone only for the hyena girl to sidestep and swing left at Yang's gut again. Sliding a foot back to avoid the low strike, Yang then came forward again as Halcyone left her chest open. Aiming a jab at her center of mass, Yang felt her right arm pushed to the left, as Halcyone directed the punch away and leaned back. Bringing her entire body forward, Halcyone headbutted Yang in the temple, earning the first real hit. Yang made a backswing with her elbow, and struck Halcyone in the jaw.

Stepping off kilter, Halcyone rubbed her jaw with her weapon wielding forearm. As Yang turned to face Halcyone again, she tilted her head back away from a wide slash at her neck. Inverting her momentum, Yang shoved herself out of the way of another gut slash on the return, and then regained her footing, to punch Halcyone in the side of her head, causing the girl to stumble. Coming back with another wide swing, Halcyone forced Yang back, then made several more aggressive slashes faster than Yang could keep up with, striking her in the sides twice before Yang felt a boot shin and leg brace planted into her neck. Tripping over her own feet, Yang felt herself fall. Catching herself before face planting, Yang rolled onto her back, then sat up out from under Halcyone as she tried to stomp on her. Somersaulting forward away from Halcyone spinning her blade right just over Yang's head, the cyborg woman jumped to her feet and faced her girlfriend again.

Yang engaged, and batted Halcyone's blade away, getting in closer, punching the scrapper in the gut with an uppercut, before hitting her with a left hook. Suddenly Halcyone grabbed Yang's wrist left wrist with her left hand, and brought the butt of the blade handle into Yang's shoulder, before Yang felt her left foot swept out from under her. With only one arm free, Yang tried to stop her face from hitting the ground, as Halcyone jumped up into the air lightly off her right foot, and straddled Yang's back, pulling her trapped limb behind her. Yang bounced off the floor lightly, and from above, Halcyone converted her machete into it's carbine form, swiftly placing a triad of bullets around her head, starting at her right ear, going just past her crown, then finishing with one grazing her left temple. "You cheated." Yang muttered.

The fight was over, Yang ceded victory to the swifter Halcyone. The taller girl helped Yang back to her feet, giving her a cheeky grin. "But I guess there isn't really such a thing as a fair fight." Yang said, returning the grin in kind.

Author's note.

We get to see a little more in depth how Halcyone fights with this friendly little spar between lovers. Halcyone appears mostly untrained, relying on reaction and or instinct in fights, but is no slouch. As mentioned before Halcyone is a faster fighter than Pyrrha (Ruby being the only person quicker with her close in movements so far bar Rot, the cheating bastard,) though isn't as skilled as everyone on the long list of other sword users in RWBY. She'd kick Dove's ass in any fight, because he's so slow, outmatches Weiss (rapier vs chopping weaponry doesn't end well for the tiny sword) and Jaune only just barely because of a raw brutality that he lacks, can get a hit or two in on the likes of Raven, Winter, and other adults with much more training/experience, but it won't be her swordplay that gives her a potential win in fights like those, unlikely as it would be, it's her unpredictability. Neo didn't expect Halc to throw her weapon at her head. Raven didn't expect to be kicked in the gut, because she was focused on the wide open overhead strike coming for her. Raph didn't expect Halcyone to try tanking an entire mag of SMG rounds and throw a grenade back at him. Yang didn't expect Halc to trip her and put a gun to her head in what seemed like a melee fight. And yes, her savage fighting style is slightly based on what we see in the Mad Max movies, because holy shit is it both brutal and effective. "If I don't know what I'm doing how does anybody else?"
