CHAPTER 7

It was late at night at the Schnee manor. Weiss had formulated a plan to escape before morning. Though not exactly perfect as she had to lock her father and General Ironwood in her dad's office, she was making good time, and would soon be able to take the hidden escape tunnel in the library out beyond the fence. The sudden eruption of gunfire changed her immediate plans. Fearing Klien could be hurt, Weiss made her way to the front door, where the sounds were coming from.

Siniy paid the van driver his 50 lien, and adorned his makeshift armor at the end of the Schnee manor driveway. Thick metal covered the entire front of his torso, the overlapping segments forming a tail that covered all the way down to his groin, and completely protected his limbs. The mask and brow plate offered only a menacing visage of two angry looking slanted eye holes, and a painted on bear's teeth. As he neared the front gate, Siniy cocked Two Theaters, and set the fire rate to 450 RPM to conserve ammo. The two private security guards posted at the front, scrambled to get their weapons from the gate house. Rather than even order him to drop the gun, they simply opened fire. Seeing no reason to not return the favor, Siniy raised the machine gun at his disposal up to hip level, and suppressed fire on the two. They scrambled back into the gatehouse, as Siniy kicked the gate itself open, now he was on a timeline. Getting a hustle on, Siniy ran up to the front door, and expecting resistance, kicked it in.

Weiss peeked her head into the hallway. The private security staff that her father employed were all rushing out of their in-house barracks with rifles and shotguns. Curiosity struck her, and so she followed the guards, listening to them as they headed for the front door. "You know what's going on?" One asked.

"Not a clue, gate guards buzzed a red alert and called the police, so whatever's going on is serious."

"You think it's the Fang?"

"Probably not, but one can hope. Whoever these dumb sons of bitches are, they have no idea what's waiting for him."

Weiss slowed her pace. Things might have just gone from bad to worse. If the White Fang was here, they'd likely mean business. The overconfident guards were in way over their heads… She needed to leave now.

Siniy kicked the front door, once, twice, three times, until finally on the fourth try, the large wooden door's lock broke. He was met with a hail of gunfire in that same instant. Bullets and buckshot bounced off of his armor, only a stray round here or there even denting it. Stepping through the door, Siniy leveled his weapon, and began spraying into the room. Every one of the security guards either dove for the nearest point of cover, or took off running. The route he had to take to get to Weiss's room happened to be the same way more than a few of the guards ran. Still charging through, Siniy found Weiss's door, and tested to see if it was locked, only to find it had been left open. Crouching down, Siniy saw the room was empty. Cursing his stupidity, Siniy continued down the hall. "Should have known they'd have some sort of evacuation plan." Siniy thought, as he continued to follow the stray guard that would peek cover shoot at him then run. Taking his chances the giant was willing to bet the guards would be protecting the manor's occupants. If he kept after them, they would lead him to Weiss.

Slightly panicking, and holed up in the library, Weiss was waiting for Klien. He said he'd be there, and she trusted he was smart enough to avoid the sounds of gunfire in the mansion… Gunfire that was drawing nearer. Weiss pointed Myrtenaster at the door to the library, as the panicked shouts of guards banged on the locked entrance, crying out for help. Halfway between terrified and wanting nothing more than to help, Weiss hesitantly approached the door, only for the guard to scream in a higher pitch, and seemingly be dragged away. Eyes wide Weiss waited for whatever came next.

Siniy kicked in the door the guard had been banging against, and felt a gout of fire strike him in the torso, doing nothing, as his semblance was actively soaking up all the heat in the air. Looking at who threw the fire at him, he froze up for a second. "Weiss?" Siniy asked.

Weiss sat open mouthed, as she looked at her boyfriend. Like some knight in… Well it was black polished armor, but close enough to shining armor. She dropped her suitcase and sword, as Siniy let his machinegun fall to the floor. The two approached each other, and after the giant took off his helmet, shared their first kiss in what would have soon been over a year. Then the moment passed and Weiss broke away from him as she realized something. "You're the one shooting up the mansion?!" Weiss asked loudly.

"I didn't kill anybody." Siniy said, as he set Weiss down.

"That's not the point! What if you got caught, what happens when someone inevitably recognizes you, or when Father tries to have you arrested?" Weiss asked, as Siniy put his helmet back on.

"None of that matters, Weiss. Your father told me you've been stripped of the family inheritance and were being confined here. There is nothing here for you now, and we can leave, together, start over... As we should have from the beginning... Weiss, you changed so much for me, for all our friends, whether you realized it or not, and that's why you captivated my heart, that's why I love you. And if that's why your father's locked you in here, then that's why I'm breaking you out." Siniy said.

"I can break myself out, thank you." Weiss said, crossing her arms, as Siniy picked up his gun. "Besides, what was your plan to leave with me? Go out the way you came in?" Weiss asked. Siniy nodded. "Of course." She sighed, before picking up Myrtenaster and her suitcase. "I see, you're traveling with all of your possessions strapped to your back like usual. That's good. Klien and I have a way out of Atlas." Weiss said, as Siniy fired some rounds down the hallway to deter the incoming security personnel.

"What happened to getting out of the house?" Siniy asked, before Klien peeked his head out of a hidden door behind a bookcase.

"Hello." He said, leaving Siniy to stare, impressed by the fact rich people did in fact have secret tunnels in their houses.

After a short drive, with Siniy more or less crammed in the entire back row of Klien's car, Weiss and Siniy were dropped off at the docks, and bribed an airship pilot to smuggle them out of the kingdom, as Ironwood's border closure was now in full effect. They gave each other a look, and Weiss squeezed Siniy's hand. They were going to Mistral to see Winter, and maybe carve out a little piece of paradise to call their own while they were at it.

The flight itself was going to take place mostly over open water. After the straight between Solitas and Anima, there was the inland sea between the northern mountains and Mistral. Along the southern shores of Lake Matsu, Weiss and Siniy sat looking out the window, as the seemingly endless water passed them by. Soon the scenery changed. Floating islands appeared in the window, and Weiss's curiosity piqued. "What are they?" She asked, getting off of the crate full of dust she was using as a seat. Siniy, too big to stand in the cabin, crawled up to the front with her. The pilot they'd bribed gave his answer.

"Islands suspended by gravity dust. They cause a little bit of turbulence, but it's nothing too bad… The real problem is the grimm that live around them." The pilot said, before Siniy looked out the window and went wide eyed.

"INCOMING!" He shouted in his native language, as he grabbed the airship's stick, and pulled upward, narrowly avoiding a collision with an on fire aircraft of Mistral origin.

"What the fuck?!" The pilot asked, as he recovered control and leveled out.

"Where did that come from?!" Weiss asked, as the ship that almost hit them rammed into one of the floating islands. Looking out the window, she saw another airship, being swarmed by lanciers. Siniy watched with a scowl as the giant grimm bugs quickly immobilized the ship, and suicided charged it, igniting the fuel onboard, and blowing it out of the air. Seeing the incoming threat, as the swarm began to chase them, Weiss and Siniy went down into the cargo bay. Siniy found a case full of linked .50 fire dust rounds, and smirked, as he got to work attaching them all. Weiss refilled the cylinder of Myrtenaster, giving herself a variety of dust types to use.

"You ever think of getting speed loaders for that?" Siniy asked in Cyrillic, as he racked the charging handle on Two Theaters. Weiss looked at him and smirked.

"Now that you mention it, they would be useful." She answered. Siniy smiled at her. Though badly accented, she had indeed learned Cyrillic.

Weiss made a gravity glyph for them, keeping them firmly rooted, and with Siniy's long arms, he was able to hit the cargo door controls from where he stood. The wind whipped by, the lancers clumped up, and Siniy Garnet set his weapon to 1,300 RPM. As the mass casualty producing weapon between the two, Siniy was responsible for laying the hatred downrange, as the pilot swerved them in and out of the floating rock formations around them. Weiss used all the available wind and fire dust at her disposal to repel and burn off any lancers that got too close, and on occasion she would provide Siniy with a small time dilation to amp his rate of fire, as ammo consumption wasn't a concern.

There was a thunk from above them. Weiss looked up, and saw that two of the lancers had hooked them. "Siniy!" She shouted pointing to the two hitchhikers. The polar bear man grunted, then punched through the thin metal and pulled one of the grimm's heads clean off of it's body. And the other one, just out of reach, was met with a small burst of rounds being sent through the roof. Sweeping up the last few stragglers, Weiss gave Siniy a high five, in celebration of their work… A celebration that came too soon.

From the largest of the islands, a queen lancer emerged. "Cyka blyat." Weiss muttered, her Cyrillic just a smidge mispronounced. The queen fired a hail of sharp detachable stingers at the airship, and Siniy found it was resistant to his incendiary bullets.

"200 rounds left!" Siniy shouted, as he restricted the rate of fire to 450 to conserve what he had. Weiss looked back at the crates of raw dust behind them, and had an idea.

"Out of the way." Weiss said, as she jumped behind the crates. Siniy, seeing no reason not to listen, jumped up onto the ladder, and hip fired his machine gun with one arm. Weiss, using a repulsion glyph, shoved the crates filled with dust out of the airship, sending them flying at the queen lancer. "Shoot the crates!" Weiss shouted to her boyfriend. Shouldering Two Theaters with one arm, Siniy let a string of bullets fly, and with a mighty boom, the dust exploded, creating a thick cloud of smoke.

When the smoke cleared, the two could see that the Queen was still alive. Siniy looked down at Weiss as he got off the ladder, and then at his empty weapon. Siniy turned to face Weiss, before he converted Two Theaters into it's shovel configuration. "We need more firepower to kill that thing... I will see you in Mistral my love." Siniy said in Cyrillic, before he backpedaled out of the airship.

"SINIY!" Weiss shouted, as he sailed into the flight path of the grimm.

Spinning in the air, the armored giant raised his shovel and let out a roar. "URAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Siniy could be heard shouting over the wind, and Weiss screamed up to the pilot. "CATCH HIM!" Without protest, the pilot attempted to make a loop back around to intercept the falling man. Only to come too close to the epicenter of what appeared to be the Sun unleashed on Remnant… Years of accumulating heat… The flash was so bright and the pressure wave was so great, that upon attempting to correct their course to evade the now blinding ball of light, the airship was caught in the blast and was knocked from the sky.

"HANG ON!" The pilot shouted, as the airship crashed into the shoreline of Lake Matsu… A body falling into the water beyond it.

Waking with a start, and panicking as water filled his lungs, Siniy thrashed around for a moment, before he shed the improvised armor strapped to him, the suit he'd made to protect him, now trying to drown him. With only his helmet and mask remaining Siniy found his weapon sling to still be wrapped around him, and that was all he needed. Kicking his powerful legs, Siniy breached the surface of Lake Matsu, and looked around for the shoreline. Used to swimming in colder waters, Siniy found no reason to shake himself dry as he looked up into the sky to see a smoke trail. "Weiss." Siniy said in Cyrillic, as he took off into the woods.
