Chapter #3 – Robert Takes the Throne

- 3rd Person: In the Throne Room -

The double doors to the throne room burst open as many people in dirtied-bloody armor quickly strode in. It didn't take them long to look at the scene before them.

Directly in front of the throne, upon the steps, was the strewn body of the former King Aerys Targaryen, and blood spilled out under him in such a large pool it also covered steps underneath him. His eyes still open in shock at his own demise.

On the throne itself sat a haggered young man in a Kingsguard armor and cloak. His body showed his tiredness even behind a lion's smirk on his face as he beheld the new group in front of him. His blond hair still somehow tidy even in his tired state. The others in the room could instantly recognize him as Jaime Lannister.

In front of Jamie Lannister was a mixed group of people all showing colors of different houses of the North and Riverlands. In front of said group was the newly crowned Lord Paramount of the North: Eddard Stark, or Ned. Ned looked upon the scene in front of him with keen investigative eyes trying to piece together what happened here. As it dawned on him, he went from surprised to a stoic expression that also shown slight loathing at the former Kingsguard in front of him.

"Jaime Lannister, who killed your king?" Lord Eddard Stark raised the question loudly for the group to hear. He could have outright called him out on the obvious stab-wound from the back, and the bloody sword to the side of the Iron Throne, but instead wanted Jaime to admit to it.

"I did," Jaime admitted. "I stabbed him before he could escape." This caused a murmur among the men-at-arms in the room.

"Oathbreaker," Eddard Stark proclaimed. His honorable tendencies called it as he saw it. "Are you claiming the throne for yourself, Kingslayer?"

Jaime wanted to bring up why he killed Aerys. He wanted to bring up that he saved all of their lives by making sure Aerys and his Pyromancer didn't light the entire city ablaze with wild-fire. The look in the eyes of the surrounding men-at-arms however told him they wouldn't listen. They couldn't get past that he killed his King, breaking his oaths as Kingsguard, and thus didn't have any honor to back what he said as true.

Right at that moment, there was movement behind the group and in-strode Tywin Lannister, followed by some of his armored retinue. Along-stride was a hulking size of a man in armor and a large warhammer being held to a resting position on his shoulder.

"What in the blazes is going on here?" The booming voice of Robert Baratheon shouted out. This in turn got some of the group blocking the entry-way to move so Robert and company could get closer to the front.

Tywin took in the picture of his son atop the Iron throne, with Aerys laying dead in front, on the stairs. "Well done Jaime."

Robert turned to Tywin, "Was this done at your command?"

Tywin quickly thought and shook his head. "No, I had no knowledge of this beforehand."

Robert's gaze only lingered on Tywin a little longer, and then went back to the Throne. "Good, the mighty dragon is gone, and done in by a lion cub."

Jamie stood up without anyone's prompting. Taking his sword from the side, he sheathed it in its scabbard as he already wiped the blood off using Aery's clothes prior.

One of the Riverlands lords spoke up now. "Who is to take the throne?"

That brought the entire room to an eerie stillness and quiet as they looked at each other warily. Finally it was Hoster Tully that spoke up.

"As one of the Lords Paramount leading the rebellion, it should be Lord Eddard Stark that takes the throne."

There was some murmurs among the crowd that had formed around them. The highlords in the room could all surmise what Hoster Tully was trying to do. With the marriage alliance of Hoster's youngest Catherine Tully to Eddard Stark, he was trying to get his own family on the throne by blood.

"I do not want the throne," Ned proclaimed. He wasn't looking, but most of the other Lords could tell Hoster was holding in his anger at Ned's proclamation. Almost as an afterthought, he stated. "I have too many things that need taking care of in the North."

One of the Stormlords spoke this time. "Then as one of the other Lords Paramount leading the rebellion, it should be Robert that takes the throne."

More murmuring occurred as the group deliberated. The other Lords paramount didn't say much, but their thought process led to the notion being agreeable, as Robert technically had Targaryen blood in his family, making the transition between the change in leadership more agreeable to some of the loyalist factions.

"What do the other Lords Paramount say to this?" Spoke up Lord Paramount Jon Arryn of the Vale.

After a few seconds of silence, the first one to speak up was Jon Arryn, "Aye."

"Aye," came from Eddard Stark.

Since two Lord Paramounts already spoke for Robert, Hoster decided to cut his losses and not instigate anything further. "Aye,"

Tywin was upset as he worked the hardest to keep the realm running during the reign of Arys Targaryan. As the former Hand of the King, he built up the kingdom the most and felt that he should have been nominated. However, seeing three other Lord Paramounts agreeing to Robert, and also not wanting to start infighting with three different kingdoms of the realm against the Westerlands, he decided to agree; for now. "Aye.

With no one saying no. Robert made his way to the Iron throne, stepping over the body of the former King Aerys on the stairs as he finally stood directly in front. There was a pause, a stillness in the air as everyone took in the sight of Robert Baratheon, the large warrior with his warhammer standing in front of the Iron Throne as he seemingly pondered over it. With a muted thud, his warhammer that was resting on his shoulders was now placed against the side of the Iron Throne. Robert turned around now facing the group in front of the Iron Throne, and with a symbolic slowness, sat down on the throne. His armor made an almost too loud crashing sound as it hit the back of the Throne.

"All hail Robert Baratheon, First of his name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms." Lord Eddard Stark shouted to the room.

"ALL HAIL." Came the chorus of voices from the crowd of men around them. Robert waited for a few renditions of the chant to pass before motioning for silence with a hand.

"Where are Elia Martell and her dragonspawn?" Robert inquired, his tone souring.

Tywin spoke up this time. "I had sent my men ahead to try and capture them, however I have not heard back from them yet."

As if on queue, a armored Lannister man came to the throne room and made his way towards Tywin before quietly conversing with him in hushed voices. All the Lords watched as actual surprise appeared on Tywin's face. This made everyone further curious.

"What news does your man bring Lord Tywin." Jon Arryn inquired with enough volume for the whole room..

Tywin looked to the messenger and motioned to the crowd with a huff. "Go ahead, tell them."

The man immediately became nervous after becoming the center of attention for the whole room and the High Lords currently present. He was gathering his courage when Tywin spoke out in a growl. "We don't have all day!"

The man kneeled in front of the Throne and Robert and answered the group as a whole. "We were unable to find Elia Martell and her children."

Robert looked enraged as he stood up from the throne. He turned to Tywin. "How could your men not find a cowering woman and her children?!"

Tywin defended himself. "I sent my most trusted men after them. Ser Amory Lorch and Ser Gregor Clegane."

This news now had the three other Lords Paramount glaring at Tywin. "You sent the Mountain after a woman and two children?" Eddard Stark spoke up. The incredulity on his face was plain for all to see. The Mountain's reputation was known as a cruel, sadistic man who was not honorable when acting upon the commands of his liege lord.

Tywin ignored Ned as he spoke to the kneeling Westerlands man. "Tell them what else happened."

The man continued now with more strength at his liege lord's demand. "We navigated the castle to the royal quarters, however we were beset upon by a group that looked like small-folk composed of different men and women who were equipped with strange knives." He untied a small pouch on his waist and threw it to the ground. "I acquired one of those knives and it is in that bag." Tywin made for the bag and opened it. The other people in the room watched Tywin as the man continued. "When they attacked us, they attacked as one. Their fighting looked like they had close-combat training and they were able to take down many of our men."

Tywin held the newly displayed kunai handle and turned it in his hands. Jon Arryn came up to Twyin and looked at it as well.

"Jon, let me see the knife," Robert commanded.

"This is troublesome." Hoster Tully stated.

Tywin gave the kunai hilt-first to Jon. He was upset that Robert didn't trust him enough to ask him to bring the kunai to him. Jon then made his way to Robert to show him the kunai. Hoster continued, "If they are indeed a small-folk group with training, we need to find out more so we can expose their group and arrest the lot of them."

"Tywin, maybe your men can bring the body of one of these trespassers to the maesters here." Jon Arryn offered as he handed the kunai to Robert, hilt first, so Robert could inspect it.

"I'm sorry my Lord, but that would not be possible," the kneeling man apologized.

"Why can your men not transport a body?" King Robert inquired as he perused the kunai.

"Because there are no bodies to transport." The kneeling man informed him.

Robert looked to the man now, "Explain," he commanded in confused anger.

"When we were able to get a lucky hit on any one 'person' in their group. That 'person' would disappear in white smoke. When the smoke dissipated, there was no body left." The man explained. "Every one of those 'small-folk' that opposed us all disappeared in the same way after taking a hit, while our own group took heavy losses."

The room was silent as they pondered what the man said. Then Robert spoke to Tywin. "Lord Tywin, are your men drinking too much before battle?"

Much to Tywin's displeasure, he defended his man. "My King, I make sure that my men stay disciplined on the eve of any battle."

"My king, I know what I saw," the man stated, still not looking directly at anyone. "If you allow me, I will get the statements of the men left in our battle-group so there is further proof.

Robert nodded, and then further inquired. "What of Elia Martell and her dragonspawn. You could not find them after doing battle with this 'small-folk group'?"

The man shook his head. "My apologies my King, but we did not find them in the quarters. We found the Princess' living quarters, however directly outside we found the body of Ser Amory Lorch. Inside the room we found the signs of a struggle."

"Are there any other bodies?" Robert demanded.

"No other bodies inside the room," the man answered. "There was no sign of any other small-folk in the room, no bodies of women or children, and no sign of Ser Gregor Clegane either."

"I want a search party made to find Elia Martell and her dragonspawn!" Robert demanded to the room in seething rage. He looked to Jon Arryn at his side . "Lord Arryn, work with Lord Lannister to make it so."

Jon Arryn nodded. He made his way down the stairs and started calling out to his men for orders. Tywin also did the same. Ned looked at Robert, his brother in all but blood, uncertainty starting to take root at his aggression towards the innocent former Princess and her children. He didn't say anything though as he felt if he did, he wouldn't be able to take the answer.

"King Robert," Ned spoke out to get his attention. "Please send me out to look for my sister. I have been given news that she is further south. I would like to confirm."

This got Robert's attention. Robert pondered longingly about Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister, and his own betrothed. Before he got lost in thought, he came to the present, nodding and proclaiming to his brother. "As your King, I order you to take your army and half the Stormlords here and move south-ward to free Storm's End from their current siege under the Tyrells." Ned was still showing his anxiousness but nodded. Robert continued. "Once done with that, I charge you with finding Lyanna Stark, my betrothed."

With his orders, Ned and his men made their way out of the throne room, not noticing Tywin's determined stare behind them.
