The Highland Mountains of Reach were normally a calm, tranquil place, a picturesque vista of serenity on an otherwise busy and chaotic world.
However, that morning, the tranquil atmosphere was shattered by the enraged bellow of a wild animal.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
Immediately, everyone was on their feet. The girls in their dormitory, the boys in theirs, Doctor Halsey and their visitor (who was slated to go back to duty tomorrow), all scrambled into action, running to the source.
John, as per his standard duties as self proclaimed 'big brother' for everyone, was through the door first, "What's going on!?" He questioned in a panic, seeing a bed, and golden locks on the floor. He gulped, looking around. "Oh no."
Adriana stood in front of a mirror, hyperventilating. "Who… did this to me!?" She screeched, her hands going up to her scalp. "I'M HIDEOUS!"
"Come on, Adriana," Serin snickered, "It's a good look for you!"
Adriana's eyes went blaze-red with rage, as she spun around, grabbing Serin and pinning her to the wall. "This is revenge, isn't it!?" She hissed. "For spreading that rumor about you and Ralph!"
Halsey quickly stepped in, pulling Adriana off. "What rumor?"
"No rumor, ma'am!" The Spartans all chorused at once. There was an unspoken understanding that, true or not, any subjects pertaining to 'physically mature acts' were not to be brought up around the Doctor, lest it give the woman an aneurysm.
Halsey furrowed her eyebrows suspiciously, turning to Adriana. "What happened?"
Adriana took a breath. "Okay, I woke up this morning, and I was feeling really itchy. And my head felt cold. So I got up to find a toboggan or something, and my hair was just buzzed off! Look at it!" She roared, pointing at her buzzcut scalp, then Serin. "And I know it had to be her!"
"Okay, Adriana," Halsey gently spoke, "I need you to calm down-
That seemed to have the opposite effect. "That's six months of hair growth gone, mother! Do you know how hard I took care of my hair!? I brushed it, and washed it, and conditioned it every single day! I was even going to enter a contest! So no, I will not 'calm down!'"
"Hey, Adriana," Will meekly spoke up, "If it helps, there are plenty of girls with buzzed heads that look all right in the end. Damn badass, actually. Like there was that one girl in the Netflix show…"
Fred nodded in agreement, pointing. "And Charlize Theron in Fury Road."
"Oh, and Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta." Kelly entered in as well.
Fred turned to her, surprised. "You know V for Vendetta?"
"The movie and the comic." She replied. "I like the comic better, though. Lots more blood."
"…marry me."
Halsey cleared her throat, clapping her hands. "Okay. I hate to talk down to you all, but I feel I have to. Will whoever cut Adriana's hair please step forward?"
Predictably, nobody did.
Adriana barred her teeth in fury. "It's a conspiracy, you see? They're all in it. Watch, ask which one is Spartacus."
Mike chortled. "I am."
Cassandra chuckled mischievously. "And so am I."
Halsey groaned, rubbing her face. "Okay then, since whoever it is isn't living up to their mistake, I'm going to have to do this the drill sergeant way. Jerrod." She addressed of her phone, bringing it up. Everyone got a distinct 'oh, crap' expression on their face, as she decided their punishment then and there. "Until whoever it was comes forward, I want every device that I'm not using locked out of the wi-fi network."
The Spartans took in a breath, aghast.
"Yes ma'am." Jerrod replied, "Executing Order 66."
Halsey blinked, looking up from her phone with a sour look at Cortana.
Her young clone chuckled with a sheepish look and a shrug. "I got bored and renamed the protocol one night."
Halsey shook her head, fixing them all with a look. "Well then. Until whoever's responsible comes forward, they'll have to deal with the guilt of shaving Adriana's head and the guilt of getting the rest of their team in trouble." Her eyes flickered over all of them, before she turned to exit. "Dismissed, Spartans." She told them, walking out.
"Ohoho," Sam took in a sharp breath, "She said 'Spartans.' She must be pissed."
"She isn't the only one!" Adriana hollered.
"All right, everyone!" John bellowed, taking command as usual. "Out. There's nothing we can do."
The rest of the group murmured, dispersing, and John ushered them out, stepping over a strand of hair that had fallen off Jai's clothing.
Adriana watched, glowering at Serin.
Little did they know, Halsey's attempt to punish the teenagers would backfire. Severely.
Because what's going to happen when you get seventy-six teenagers with no impulse control, bored teenagers at that because you've taken away their internet?
They're going to make way more trouble than usual.
Day two of no electronics, and once again, the calm vista of the mountains was shattered by a Spartan vocalizing their rage. This time, however, it was in the afternoon, and the sound had emanated from Serin.
Sighing, Halsey dropped what she was doing, prepared herself to have to break up another fight, and moved toward the source.
The crowd of Spartans were gathered around the furious Serin, watching as she raged and smashed whatever she could get away with breaking. They flinched with every shattering noise, none too brave to get close.
"Where is that bitch!?" Serin hollered, "I'm going to-" She opened the door, seeing Halsey, before she stopped.
The Doctor blinked, looking at Serin's neon green hair. Someone must've replaced her shampoo and conditioner with hair bleach and hair dye.
"Oh my god, she looks like a walking Mountain Dew…" Li gulped in terror, stepping back as Serin rounded on him.
Halsey sighed, looking to Adriana. "Adriana…"
"What?" She shrugged innocently. "She gave me this… wonderful makeover, so I decided to pay her back in kind."
"I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU-!" Serin bellowed, about to tackle the other girl to the floor, before some of the others stepped in, and pulled her back. "I DIDN'T TOUCH YOUR GODDAMN HAIR, YOU INSANE BITCH! I WAS WITH RALPH THAT ENTIRE MORNING!"
"And we were in the garage doing garage stuff." Ralph shrugged, "So unless there's a secret tunnel network underneath the farmstead…"
John furrowed his eyebrows, turning to Cortana. "Is there a secret tunnel network under the farmstead?"
She shrugged in ignorance, watching the fight play out.
"So what were you and Ralph doing in that garage, then!?" Adriana shot back with her hands on her hips accusingly. "You guys could've been plotting!"
Serin blushed, turning away. "That's… none of your business."
"Well, if you don't have an alibi, Serin, I'm going to have to believe you did it." Halsey pointed out with a shrug.
"We were…" Serin cleared her throat, feeling all eyes on her. She lowered her voice, breaking eye contact. "We were making out on top of Fred's car. What!? It's a farm and there's nothing to do!"
Fred's jaw unhinged as he gagged, while everyone else whooped and hollered in congratulation. James passed a twenty-credit bill over to Jerome, and Cortana chuckled quietly.
John turned to Cortana again, raising an eyebrow. "You knew?" He softly asked.
Cortana shrugged slowly. "I had… suspicions."
"Oh, god, I'm gonna have to disinfect it…" Fred groaned.
"It's a moot point anyway!" Serin continued defensively, "Because the important thing is that we couldn't have messed with Adriana's hair!"
Halsey crossed her arms, but looked like she bought the explanation. "All right."
"What!?" Adriana spluttered, "That's bullshit!"
"The garage has cameras in it." Halsey replied, "This entire farmstead does."
The crowd went silent.
"Uh…" Jai blinked, "Not in the bathrooms or bedrooms, right?"
Halsey sighed, rubbing her face. "No, Jai, not in the bathrooms or bedrooms."
"Oh good." He let out a sigh of relief. "Cause I do not like people watching me do my business."
"Wait a minute…" Serin frowned, turning to Jai. "Why'd you ask about cameras in the bedrooms?"
Jai scoffed. "Cause I just said I don't like people spying on me? Try to keep up."
"You could've just asked about the bathrooms." Serin lowered her voice. "Why are you so concerned about the bedrooms? Got something you're hiding in there?"
Jai snorted derisively in response. "Oh, like you would be fine letting people watch you sleep."
"Uh, not that it matters," John raised his hand, "Probably not, but I saw Jai with a strand of blonde hair on his clothes."
"Are you kidding me!?" Jai raised his voice. "That's circumstantial as shit! Half the girls around here are blondes! Hell, just look at Cal!" He pointed.
All heads turned, seeing her glorious platinum blonde mane shining in the light. "I believe Jai was at the front of the group." Cal murmured. "There're only five girls with blonde hair. Jai was near none of them."
Serin growled. "It was you, wasn't it?"
Jai sighed, and put his hands up. "Fine, yes, it was me, it was me all along, Serin." He rolled his eyes. "I cut Adriana's hair so she'd fight you as revenge for stabbing me."
Everyone blinked, turning to Jai.
"YOU STABBED ME FIRST!" Ralph hollered.
"Wait, what?" Jai looked around, suddenly becoming alarmed, noticing the seething fury on both Serin and Adriana's faces. "Wha- No! I was being facetious!"
"Jai," Halsey addressed, "You'd better run. Only God can help you now."
Jai let out a fearful yelp, dashing away, before Serin and Adriana put aside their feud for a moment to chase him down.
"…well, I'd better get dinner started." Halsey cleared her throat, turning away. "I suspect they'll be hungry once they get back."
"Hell yeah." Ralph nodded, hungry as all hell.
"Oh, and we're all going to have to have a talk about interpersonal relationships." She continued, causing everyone to pale.
"Uh oh."
