Ash Ketchum had made many mistakes in his lifetime. He had made small mistakes, such as leaving items out or misplacing items. He had made big mistakes, such as being late on his very first day as a trainer and being unable to choose his first Pokemon, though this turned into something great later. Each and every one of these mistakes helped him in some way in the long run whether it be a lesson or giving him a lifelong partner in Pikachu. His last mistake though he couldn't find anything helpful in. Ash had chosen to try and stop the fight of two very powerful legendary Pokemon... by running in between their attacks.

This of course did not work out well for the young trainer. A flair of pain seared into his mind, a note telling him what he was doing was stupid. The energy of the two psychic attacks rampaged within him eating his own energy to feed themselves. Pain unlike any he had ever felt rampaged through his nerves before slowly the pain in his extremities faded. A soft cool feeling washed through his body as he hang briefly in the air from the attack. His senses failed first was touch, then smell, then sound and finally sight. As Ash fell to the ground Ash only hoped that the fighting would end. What his actions accomplished is exactly what Ash wanted to occur. All the fighting stopped.

Ash's ever faithful partner Pikachu dashed quickly to his side though it was to late. The massive influx of energy the two attacks generated when they collided had been strong enough to petrify the poor trainers body turning it into a weird type of stone. Even Pikachu's electric shocks which he had used many times before to wake his trainer failed to garner a reaction from the frozen boy.

Around him Pokemon gathered, not all of them his. Over his body they wept tears. Tears of pain, tears of sorrow, and tears of regret. The two legionaries Mew and Mewtwo as psychics felt the sorrow heavily in the air. Mewtwo the self proclaimed strongest Pokemon in existence wept because he finally understood exactly what he had done. While Mew wept for the loss of someone so young and so full of life.

Mew could feel it before it began. She had been alive long enough to witness the event that was about to occur before though at that time there wasn't nearly as many Pokemon to start the process. Soon the Aura of every Pokemon intertwined together and caused the tears they were shedding to rise into the air. Each tear infused with that Pokemon's power. These tears flew to the young boy recharging him and granting him new life. Slowly the Petrification eased from the child's body and he started to breath once more.

This lasted just a short time though. Ash began coughing up blood. While the Aura of so many Pokemon had revived him and given him a boost the two attacks Mewtwo and Mew had launched at each other had done to much damage to his body. Even with the infusion of aura Ash was slowly dieing and this time no tears would be able to solve the issue.

Mew could feel her age. While she was known to be a playful trickster she knew her limits. It had been 994 years since her "birth" and she knew she only had a few more left in her. You see Mew as a Species were special. They were not born as any other Pokemon was they were ascended. Mew remembered she used to be a Kangaskhan. She had helped many lost and hurt Pokemon before one day a small pink cat came to her. It was the previous Mew and just like her now it was getting old. It told her the Mew Species would only live 1000 years before they died. So before they died they would have to go out and find another being to take their place. Mew would pass all their power into the chosen vessel and this new being would be shifted into a new Mew. The old Mew would still live on for a short while in the mind of the new Mew but would slowly fade after a year or so, just long enough to pass on knowledge. As such watching this young hero dying in front of her Mew made a choice.

With all of the Pokemon and few humans watching Mew floated up to the young boy before setting down at his head. Pulling her Aura out she started to lay it onto the human but before she completed the layering she connected with the child's mind. Even if this would save him she would not force the change upon an unwilling participant. Using her powers she soothed the agonizing pain the young one was feeling so that he could answer truthfully without compulsion from pain.

Inside Ash's mind both Ash and Mew floated in what seemed to be a void. After staring at each other for just a moment Mew began to speak to him.

"Before I begin, I must apologize. If I had not let this drag on you would not have had to intervene. I should have attacked with all of my might from the beginning now you are paying for that mistake." The words echoed through the space but Ash could tell the words were coming from the small pink feline in front of him.

Thinking for a moment Ash gathered himself before replying, "It's not your fault. I could have attempted to stop the two of you without throwing myself in between your attacks. Sometimes it seems my body reacts before my mind can even function. It's OK though because whatever you did seems to have fixed me up real nice anyway."

Ash could see what seemed to be a frown on the face of Mew before she replied. "I did not. I had and have nothing that can fix your body without major changes occurring to you. I am only pushing the pain away from you so that we might have this conversation." Mew seemed to think a moment before continuing. "I do have something that CAN save you but it would require a sacrifice on both of our parts, more your side than mine."

Ash blinked for a moment processing this information before asking. "What exactly would this sacrifice entail? I mean not dying doesn't seem like much of a sacrifice to me. Also why do I feel calmer or more collected than I feel like I should be?"

"To answer your last question I am using my Psychic powers to enhance your mind. It might feel like you are a bit more collected and able to think clear and that's because you are. I needed you to be so you could agree or decline to the first part. To start with you would have to understand how Mew as a species work.

There are only ever two Mew in existence at one time no more, no less. The reason for this is simple its the way we were created. One Mew, we will call him my brother, watches over the Tree of Beginning. The Tree of Beginning is a major Nexus for Kanto and Jhoto. It acts as an anchor for all of the Aura that exists in this area and without it the Aura would shift and spread causing major Climate and Ecological Disaster. Anyway its my Brothers job to make sure no damage occurs to the Tree. My job is different I am in charge of populating every region. Not physically of coarse I don't make or lay the eggs for every Pokemon. No its my job to create every species of Pokemon and making sure they thrive in the environment.

With that out of the way let me say this Mew the species only live for 1000 years. On our 1000th birthday we die. This of coarse contradicts with what I told you before in that there is always two Mew. You see when we die somewhere in the world a random being in selected to transform into a new Mew. They are given no choice or option they just change. The reason for this is so we always have two Mew but I am dragging on. We have the power before we reach 1000 to pass our power on to anyone we choose. In doing so the being is transformed into a Mew and any wounds they have would be healed. I have been alive for 994 years, I do hope you understand what I am trying to say."

Mew wound down her speech and kept her eyes on Ash. With the widening of his eyes there was of coarse no way he didn't get what she was saying. "My offer is this. I will transform you into the new Mew. Doing so will save you, you will live. I will pass on... mostly. The sacrifice I spoke of is that you will never be human again BUT you will live. My sacrifice is that I will take your place in death."

Ash seemed conflicted. "But you would die. Why would you do this for me? I don't want you to have to die for me!"

"Ash, I am close to death anyway 6 years I would be gone anyway. I have spent 4 years doing nothing but searching for my replacement as it is. If you do this it would cut my hunt for a suitable replacement short by a long time."

"Why me though? What do I have that others don't? Why would you choose me out of everyone? There has to be a better Pokemon or Human for you to choose from." Ash couldn't understand why he was chosen for such a monumental task. Lance or one of the Elite Four would be a better choice. Even his mom would make a great choice she has always looked out for him and helped anyone who asked.

Mew though she stared down at the boy whose world seemed to be shaking. "That right there is one of the major reasons. Do you know how many people would jump at the chance to be a Legendary Pokemon. There is a saying I heard one of you humans came up with. 'The best ruler is one who doesn't want to.' I stand by that thought. You willing threw yourself in between two Pokemon just to help and when you are rewarded for it you try and turn it down. Please Ash don't make me have to spend the next 6 years trying to find someone better than you, because I can tell you I WILL fail."

Mew could tell Ash's desire to turn down the offer had crumbled but she still needed to hear his answer before she went forward. "So Ash I ask you. Will you take on my power become the new Mew and make sure Pokemon continue to exist and move forward?"

Ash's resolve hardened and with a nod he agreed. "So does this mean I have to stop trying to be a Pokemon Master?"

Mew couldn't keep her giggles in and Ash couldn't help but smile at the almost childlike giggles the little Pokemon released. "Did you know that 700 years ago I went on my own Pokemon journey? My starter was a bulbasaur. If I am not mistaken he is currently the Elder that oversees the Bulbasaur evolutions. We know Transform and with you having a prior human body you could easily transform into it and continue your journey. Anyway thank you for this. This might feel a little weird at first but the transfusion of my power shouldn't take but just a few moments."

The void the two were in started to fade as reality reasserted itself. The pain Mew was holding back came back with a vengeance and you would see it on Ash's face. Mew's power began to flow like a river setting itself deep within Ash. Ash's Aura which was already strong for a normal human grew exponentially as it took on the power of Mew. As the last of her power shifted from her body she began to glow almost as if she was going through an evolution even though she had none. After a few seconds Ash's body took on the same glow. All around Pokemon stared at the event that was occurring in front of them.

Soon the glow around Mew vanished leaving a feline that seemed to be devoid of color. She turned to Ash's stalwart companion Pikachu. "Take care of him for me OK?" Pikachu looked to her confused before his eyes widened as mew seemed to break down into small glowing particles that settled onto the still glowing Ash. Before everyone's eyes the form of Ash under the glow started to shift. First he shrunk in size, soon after a tail and ears seemed to grow from the young boy's body as his formed seemed to ripple. After around five minutes of glowing and shifting the glow started to fade. In place of the boy now a small pink Mew lay on the ground. With what seemed to be monumental effort the Mew seemed to shift in place before opening it's eyes. Mew's Legacy had been passed on to the next generation.
