The world was just not fair to some people.
It was fair to others.
It was generous with few.
Naruto worked his fingers to the bone, and the entire day he had been working he had felt the strange sensation that he was being watched. He couldn't pinpoint the feeling of where he was being watched from, or who was watching him. He just knew that no matter where he went, the feeling never went away.
It was a Tuesday, so he was busy.
He started off his day by going to work his job at a construction site, he worked there for several hours as a part time worker. They always had the worst jobs for him to do, the ones that required the most physical labor. He was fine with it though, he had a strong body because of how hard he was pushed. He could handle it easily enough, no real problems to think of.
Then when he was finished with construction work, he had to do his other job as a security guard for students at a local college.
Finally, he finished his Tuesday at the night club.
He was a bouncer at a night club, and there were many times he would have to take control of unruly guests. It was a better paying job though, and he got to work there 4 days a week instead of 3 days like his other jobs. Tuesday was his busiest day because it was the day of the week that he was expected to show up at all of his jobs, and it sucked.
"Hello, Uzumaki Naruto?"
"... Do I know you?" Naruto asked with a tilted head when he saw an adult woman approach him, not even slightly dressed like she was going to the club. She was kind of nerdy looking, her chest was as flat as a board, she had no real curves to speak up, and her narrow eyes were like those of a dead fish. She was cute, but the fact was that she did not wear clothes that showed off her charming points.
She seemed familiar for a moment.
Kobayashi.
She was the woman who had been in the apartment he took Ilulu to, he only recognized her because he saw the maid who had answered the door standing behind her. She was a bombshell in every aspect, stood out like a sore thumb just like himself. He remembered her name was Tohru from Ilulu, and it was hard to forget a maid with horns and a oddly thick green dragon tail sticking out of the bottom of her dress.
"You dropped Ilulu off with us, her injuries have healed. Mind stepping outside, I actually wanted to talk to you about her." Kobayashi spoke pretty casually and plainly.
Naruto looked at Tohru.
"Thank you for saving her." Tohru gave a short official bow of her head, no respect in the bow at all, just thanks with a deadpan tone. As if she were thanking him out of obligation, and not genuine concern for Ilulu. Tohru was not glaring at him, but she was staring at the whisker marks on his cheek curiously. "Curiousity speaking... but you wouldn't happen to have magical blood, would you?" Tohru asked with a tilted head.
"Eh?"
"Sorry, but I've met a few witches that have those same marks on their cheeks." Tohru remembered vividly talking with a witch at an anime convention that bore the exact same whisker marks as he had. Whisker marks were not uncommon traits for people related to powerful demons or witches who had cats or foxes as their theme. Tohru looked at the center of Naruto's chest and raised her eyebrow, before she shrugged her shoulders.
"No, I'm human."
"Either way, it doesn't matter what you are. Not many people would save a dragon's life, more so a chaos dragon."
"... It was you watching me all day today." Naruto felt her stare at his chest, he could feel that same piercing stare that had been following him all day. If Tohru was surprised by the fact that he had noticed her, she only showed it as the smallest of expression changes. Kobayashi on the other hand looked between Naruto and Tohru with more curiousity.
Naruto sat down with them at a table.
"This place serve beer?"
"Yes."
"Good, anyway. I just wanted to talk to you, get your opinion on Ilulu and dragons. What are your thoughts on them." Kobayashi spoke as if she were in a business meeting. Naruto didn't really know how to answer her question, and Tohru was paying close attention to his answer. Close enough that it was a little unnerving.
Naruto had to think about it.
"... I don't have any thoughts on dragons... Ilulu seems kind of lonely though, she seems like she was hurt in the past. She seems like a good person in her heart." Naruto stated as he thought hard with his chin in his palm.
Tohru scoffed.
"Good isn't the word I would use."
"Even though it is her fault you're homeless?" Kobayashi had done her research and learned that he had been kicked out of his apartment because of Ilulu, and his act of saving her.
"It's my fault, not her fault. I didn't have to save her, and I didn't have to use my money to feed her at a fancy place. I made the choice, and I stand by that choice... and I'm not going to be homeless much longer. I get paid from all of my jobs this Friday, so I've get a new apartment then." Naruto didn't care how she knew his financial situation.
She knew, there was no reason to hide it or lie about it.
"I like this guy... but not as much as I love you Kobayashi!" Tohru corrected very quickly.
She turned to face Naruto.
A human that lived his life by his own will, his own desires, and followed his own path without regretting the wrong choices he had made. Somebody who didn't push the blame for his choices onto other people, and too responsibility was somebody that she could like no matter the species. She had been watching him work his fingers to the bone all day, from sunrise to passed sunset.
"I want to help Ilulu, and she isn't saying it out loud, but she wants to bond with you more. You're a very hard worker, the company I work at could use somebody like you. I could ask for a few favors, and get you a good job. You would get paid more than the 3 jobs you have combined... and you could get an apartment... on the condition you agree to let Ilulu stay with you."
"No."
"No?"
"No." Naruto stated with his arms crossed.
"Because she's a dragon?"
"Because, she's not a pet you can push off onto other people. I don't have a problem living with her, but I don't want you to take pity on me so that I can take a problem off your hands." Naruto stated with his tone harsher, his arms crossed tightly, and his brow furrowed in annoyance. His words seemed to ring correctly with Kobayashi, because she just leaned back and smiled at him.
"That is a good answer." Kobayashi relented.
"I have a question, why do you need money so bad? It seems you could make enough at 1 job to support yourself?" Tohru had a question, and Naruto didn't answer her.
He didn't know how to answer her.
"It's not for me, and I don't want to talk about it." Naruto didn't feel comfortable.
Kobayashi didn't push for an answer, and neither did Tohru.
"Well, okay then. I'll see what I can do about getting you a job with my company, and I'll ask Ilulu if she wants to live with you. Dragons can be a big hassle, but I'm sure you'll do fine." Kobayashi said, ignoring Tohru's pitiful moan once the woman heard the insult to dragons. "By the way, you old enough to drink yet Uzumaki-kun?" Kobayashi questioned as she tried to gauge his age.
"I'm 19, so no, and I'm not a good drinker, since I never really drink."
"I think somebody else should learn a thing or two about moderation." Tohru whispered as she looked away from the humans of the group, just as a woman brought beer to the table.
-50 Minutes Later-
"I got fired... I lost that job." Naruto stared up at the night sky with a blank look.
"Sorry."
"It's... it's fine, I hated that job anyway. If you have a manual for the job you're promising, I think I'll take the rest of the night to study over it." Naruto had a lot more free time on his hands now. If he actually managed to get the job being promised, that woud help him cut down the number of jobs he had from... what was once 3, down to 2. He would be able to quit his day jobs and get a part time night shift job somewhere else.
Tohru transformed.
She turned into a very large green dragon with a very round torso and belly, she was a chubbier dragon to be sure. She looked down at Naruto for his reaction, while the drunken Kobayashi got onto her back and passed out.
"Sorry about her, she gets a little maid crazy when she's drunk. If you're fine with the couch, you can stay over with us for the night." Tohru saw no trace of fear of disgust in his eyes.
The fact there was no fear in his eyes was a little shocking.
Naruto just stared up at her, and he looked around to see that nobody seemed to notice the appearance of a large dragon. Naruto just frowned and thought about it for a moment, before he rubbed the back of his head.
"It wouldn't hurt to have some place to study." Naruto relented with a shy grin.
-5 Minutes of Flying-
Tohru opened her mouth and dropped Naruto to the roof of the apartment building, with his body magically cleaned from her saliva. Kobayashi woke up slightly from her snooze as Tohru took her human form once more, and helped the woman walk towards the apartment.
"... That was gross."
"Dragon saliva is very clean, and it gets rid of filth."
"That was gross."
'Seriously, why is he so familiar to me. I can swear that something about him is just off, he smells human, tastes human, and he isn't lying about being human... something about him just seems... better than human.' Tohru didn't know how to place it, or where she could place it even if she knew how. Something about the human before her just screamed at her to pay attention, and she was sure that Ilulu had never even noticed something off.
Naruto on the other hand just sighed.
"... Still... not the most gross thing I've been covered in."
"I have questions about THAT statement."
Tohru had to admit her curiousity had been peaked.
