That he became a little more jaded and cynical along the way was to be expected. So when the last link to his past shattered, Merlin wasn't surprised that he broke a bit as well.

Diverges from canon during Episode 10 of Season 5, "The Kindness of Strangers." A patrol of knights led by Mordred sees two people in earnest conversation at the old temple, one of them a sorceress. When a line of fire is thrown up between them and the pair, the woman escapes. However, one of the knights captures the other – Merlin.

"Blue eyes like the sea and blonde hair as bright as the sun. He swooped her up in his arms and with long strides left the tent. All she could do was sigh into his neck as she closed her eyes. It is the first time meeting the man, it was only the beginning. He would be hers, she would make sure of that. Her savior that saved her from this hellish place. Her God."

Arthur goes on a quest without Merlin and finds himself facing all kinds of deadly trouble, not least of which being the powerful sorcerer named Emrys who just won't leave him alone. Lots of magic and BAMF!Emrys.

Arthur is king, Morgana never became evil and instead teamed up with Merlin to train Mordred and protect her brother. Things should be perfect right? Wrong, a new and powerful kingdom has come into light and Arthur seeks an alliance with them before a mad sorcerer bent on revenge can march on Camelot. There is just one twist to this alliance, the entire kingdom is filled with Magic
