We never really see Merlin mourning in the years since Will's death. This is my take on what happens: Today is not like any other day. Today, Merlin doesn't smile, not really.

We all know how the story ends. Arthur kills Mordred even as Mordred wounds Arthur fatally. Here is my version of the events leading up to that moment, stopping just shy of the Final Battle.
