« I'm moving on, and I think you should too Arizona. I know it's not enjoyable for you too see me dating other people but we're not together anymore. » Callie coldly replied. « It was a mutual decision, wasn't it ? So please, leave your life, date, G to John Hopkins, and have fun. I'm not going to cry over you for the rest of my days... »
« I'm not... I'm not crying over you Callie... » Arizona lied. « I'm just not in the mood to date... And anyway I'm leaving in a few months, I'm not going to start something if I'm moving across the country. I hate long distance relationships. I don't believe in them. »
« Wait ! » Callie flashed a smile. « I knew that girl who is a professionnal soccer player. I treated her a few months 's playing at Seattle for the moment, but I think she's been signing a contract with a team from Washington. »
Callie grabbed her phone and send a text to Arizona. « Here is her number. Her name is Jamie, she's a brunette, blue eyes, hot... Call her, I'm sure she's your type. »
Callie left her ex girl friend in the middle of the crowd to get to the bar where Mark was switing for her.
Arizona couldn't stand the awkwardness of the situation. The woman she loved was trying to make her dating another woman as she was dancing dangerously close to Mark Sloan...
The blonde took a last sipe of her beer and walked out of the house were the party was just getting started.
Three months ago, she and Callie were crazy in love. They were the solid couple a lot of their friends envied. And then, she was accepted in John Hopkins for a pediatrics fellowship once she would get her boards. She decided to decline the offer to stay at Seattle with her girlfriend, but then, another bump on the road shook the couple.
Callie wanted a house full of kids. The subject had come in a daily talk at the hsopital cafeteria. She wanted it all, the big house, the dog... Arizona was totaly in, except for the kids.
She didn't want kids. She wanted to put her professional career first.
First Callie had been disapointed, then she became sad, and even bitter.
Arizona had explained her she might be more comfortable with the idea of having a child when they would be married and settled in their career.
But the most she was thinking about it, the more Callie wanted that child so badly. It begun an obsession at some point, and even a deal breaker when Arizona had said, during a fight she didn't need kids in her life to be happy.
So as they were not able to compromise, Arizona had sadly admitted that she couldn't be the one that would keeps Callie from having a baby, that wasn't fair to her.
And so, after almost three years of love and happiness, they decided to break up. And Arizona decided to go to Hopkins.
….
Callie was waiting for some news.
She hadn't be able to stay in the OR and another Ortho surgeon had took her place. She was still under the shock. What was happening ? How could she be there ?
Why was she running throught the night with a kid in her arm ?
The kid ! Who was he ? Did she finally started a family with someone else ?
She needed to check on him too. Or maybe it wasn't her place. It would be too awkward.
She tried to remember when was the last time she had heard from Arizona but the stress and the fear the blonde was going to die in the OR were making it impossible to focus on anything else.
She had called her father, telling him she wouldn't be home because of an ermergency. At least Sofia and him were quietly asleep now.
She had also text Miranda Bailey who had immediately take her car and rush to the hospital. She was the former couple best friend before they split up and she couldn't believe what Callie had told her.
Miranda had saw Arizona at the mall, six month before. She thought she was mistaking her for someone else at first because when she had reach her, calling by her name, Arizona had deny remembering her.
The blonde was Sitting outside a hair salon when her partner was having a hair cut.
When Miranda had insisted, she had tell her she didn't really remember her, that she was sorry.
Everything about that meeting seemed of. Arizona was like the shaddow oh herself, sukken eye with dark circles under them, some ripped and old clothes on her back, she had lost weight during the years, it was more than obvious.
..
« So you are back to Seattle ? » Miranda asked, trying to make her friend talking to her.
« Yeah, since a few weeks. » The blonde replied, her gaze shifty.
« And you're here on your own ? Do you have a new job ? Which hospital is it ? » Miranda continued.
« I'm here with my partner. She's just over here. » Arizona pointed the hair salon. « And I'm not in the medical field anymore. »
« Oh ? What happened ? » Miranda asked, surprised as she knows Arizona loved being a surgeon above all.
« I'm sorry, I have to go. » Arizona excused herself as she stood up and walked to join a woman coming out of the salon.
Bailey looked at her, totaly confused and shocked.
« Who was this woman ? » the brunette asked Arizona.
« Nobody she was just asking me what time it is. » Arizona lied.
« I hope you are not lying... You know what happen when you lie to me Ari... »
….
« Where is she ? » Miranda made Callie jumped when she joined her in the attending lounge.
« She's still in surgery, Owen and Webber are working on her. Shepperd too. She has an open femur fracture, a broken shoulder and multiple ribs broken, if she made it, she will have to get back to surgery as soon as possible. » Callie replied. « What is happening Bailey ? How could this happen to someone like her ? »
« I have no idea Torres... I was sure something was weird when I saw her all those months ago. She was … like a zombie. She was so off, like she was... drugged ? I don't know... » Miranda sighed. « I should have push harder, ask her more question... »
« She had a kid with her Bailey. » Callie said as tears filled her eyes. « A little boy around 2. »
Bailey was at lost, she knitted her brows and shook her head no.
« There was not any child with her when I saw her. Just that woman, she called her « partner ». Not a romantic word to talk about the person you are living with right... » Miranda tried to understand. « Arizona, with a kid ? No... Where is he ? »
« Alex and Grey took care of him. I didn't checked on him yet. »
Just as Callie said those words, Bailey rushed to the peds ward. She wanted to see it with her own eyes. Arizona would have never have child, unless it would have been with Callie.
Miranda had lived throught her friends fights over that issue. She had tried to help them find a way to reconcile, she had comforted them and listen to their heartache for hours.
As soon as she saw the person she was looking for she yelled « Karev ! Where is he ? How is he doing ? »
« Good morning to you too Dr Bailey. » Alex replied, already annoyed by his coworker tone. « He is okay, he's sleeping. He has a broken arm, two broken ribs and a lot of bruises but he's going to be okay, nothing major. We sedate him because he was screaming for Robbins. »
« How do you know it was for her ? » Miranda asked.
« I don't know. He was yelling « Nana ». Like in ArizoNA maybe ? » Alex shrugged. « I was going to the gallery to see how she is doing. You want to join me ? »
« I Have to get back to Torres first. » Miranda replied. « What can you tell me about that little boy ? »
« Well, he's between 18 month and 2 years old. Brown curly hair, blue eyes. He's under nourrished for sure. We found his ID, and Arizona's in the blanket, litteraly in the blanket. Someone seemed to have hide them in it. The fabric of the blanket was cut an stitched back around them. » Alex explained. « His name is Matthew Robbins. »
….
At the same moment, Owen was walking to find Callie and give her the latest news.
He was still shock to see his friend in such a desperate state. He had done everything he could and was now praying for Dereck Shepperd to do the same.
« Torres. » He called.
« How is she Owen, don't lie. » Callie pleaded.
« It's been tough. We lost her three time, but she came back. Her heart is stable for now. There was less damage than we thought inside. We had to remove the spleen thoug. » He explained, taking his scrub cap of his head. « Chang his working on her fremur, and Shepperd is trying to locate where a brain is bleeding. He's working on her with Amelia, can you believe it. They are both in there... »
Callie smiled sadly, trying not to think about the worst.
« She's going to be okay, isn't she ? » Callie asked.
« She has to. She's Arizona Fricking Robbins ! »
