The five Servants along with their Master take their seats in a meeting room for Chaldea's top officers, which is mainly the head doctor, the director, and the Master Candidate. While the Servants are getting to know their new Master, I watch on from the other side of the meeting table uncertain on what to do.
[You should talk to them, they may not remember you but they are the same people who you remember]
'And how would I do that? These guys are practically new people, fresh off the printer. Do you have any idea how awkward and insanely depressing it's been to look at them and know that they'll never be the same people I got to know in that hellhole of a grail war!?'
[Of course I know because I'm practically feeling the same thing your feeling, but I would at least try to get something going instead of sulking in the corner like your doing right now watching them like a stalker]
I sigh before a cup of tea is laid in front of me. I look up and see Semiramis standing in front of me.
"You look like you could use something to drink, Magician." Semiramis said.
"Magician?" I asked.
"You did create my throne with Magic, yes? Which means that you must be a Magician." Semiramis surmised.
[She's not technically wrong]
I look at the tea. "...you poisoned this, didn't you."
The Assassin-class Servant actually looks offended. "You would accuse a queen of such a heinous deed? My, my~ you got a lot of balls, don't you?"
I roll my eyes and take the cup. Without hesitation, I drink the tea and my eyes widen a bit. "It's good." I put the cup down.
Semiramis flips her hair. "Of course, not every poison is meant to kill someone."
"Still, can't be too overly cautious about this. You are the world's oldest poisoner for a reason." I said.
"True." She admitted. "But I would prefer if my comrades got to know me before they make wild accusations."
"Sorry." I look at her. "Why are you being so friendly towards me anyway?"
Semiramis smiles. "We are about to take a perilous journey across time to fix humanity's future. I would like there to be no animosity between us."
I snort. "I guess you're right."
Semiramis leans in closer to me. "... you've been crying."
"..."
"Do you want to share?" She asked.
"... have you ever loved someone?" I asked. "Loved them with everything in your entire being and they loved you back? Only when you see them again they don't even remember you?"
"That is quite an oddly specific question." Semiramis said.
"It hurts… it hurts so fucking much." I sobbed. "The way they look at you… it's almost alien. The worst part is that I tell myself that it's not her, but everytime I see her I can't help but remember those happy times we had together." I crush the cup in my hand. "Its torture!"
"Fou…" Fou puts his paw on my hand attempting to comfort me.
Semiramis looks at me with a bit of interest. In life, her past lovers were men of status and positions of power. One of them killed himself if she remembered correctly. This man seems to be in the same position as her first husband, though in his case is the fact that his beloved's memories of him were completely erased and is in the middle of a heartbreak.
Maybe she could use this to her advantage.
Unknown to her, Medusa overhears their conversation.
Olga Marie stares at CHALDEAS as the rings rotate around the model of the Earth. She turns back to see the group walking inside.
"Oh, you're here. Finally, we can get right to the mission briefing." Olga Marie crosses her arms under her chest. "As you are aware, humanity is on the verge of collapse due to the presence of Singularities in key eras of human history. If they are not corrected, humanity will have no future beyond 2016 and it'll be all destroyed."
"So we're on a deadline." EMIYA comments.
"Sure sounds like it." Cú Chulainn added.
"What do we need to do, director?" Mashu asked
"I'm glad you asked Mashu. The first objective is the investigation and correction of the Singularities. You must travel to those eras, investigate what it is, figure it out, and correct it." Olga Marie smirked. "Easy enough, yes?"
"You forgot to mention the abundance of monsters populating these Singularities as well as all of the Heroic Spirits we will face." EMIYA remarks.
"Shut up, Servant! It just slipped my mind!" Olga Marie snapped.
"Right, slipped. It's okay to admit you forgot." EMIYA said with fake sympathy.
"I didn't forget dammit!"
And just like that, EMIYA's signature snarky remarks strike again.
Olga Marie growls before clearing her throat. "Anyways, your second objective will be investigating the 'Holy Grail'. Based on speculation, we believe the Singularities are connected to the Holy Grail. The Holy Grail is a vessel that contains tremendous magical energy, capable of granting any wish the user desires."
"You believe that someone from the past may have come across the Holy Grail and is using its power to change history." Semiramis deduced.
"It's debatable but that's the current theory we're working with." Olga Marie said. "Lev probably got ahold of a Holy Grail in some form and used it to try and kill me." Her body trembles a little before it subsides. "I want you to gather intel on anything regarding the Holy Grail while inside the Singularity. Even if you correct history, leaving the Holy Grail behind will only put us back at square one so you must either retrieve the Holy Grail or destroy it! Are we clear?"
"Aye, aye chief!" Ritsuka exclaims but then realizes something. "Wait, how will we get back to Chaldea?"
"You leave that to us." Romani's voice echoes throughout the room. "We'll be able to monitor your progress from the secondary control room and Rayshift you all back once your mission is complete."
"Also, you will need to find a leyline and make a summoning circle like we did in Fuyuki. We'll need that to send you supplies, you can also use it to summon Servants at will but they will likely be closely tied to that era. We'll need all the manpower we can get, understood?" Olga Marie said.
"Understood." Mashu replies. "Before all else, we'll try to establish a base camp first. What we'll need is a place to relax, a structure with a roof, and a home to come back to. Right, Master?"
"Right. I'll be counting on you, Mashu." Ritsuka smiles.
A pink dusting appears on Mashu's face. "H-Hearing you say that, really means a lot to me. I-I know I'm still an inexperienced Servant, but you can count on me. I'll give it my all!"
"And don't forget about us! We'll be with you all the way!" Cú Chulainn exclaims.
Fou jumps to Ritsuka's shoulder and nuzzles her cheek.
"Fou!"
"... you've changed, Mashu." Olga Marie said.
"Y-You think so?"
"Yeah. Before, you used to be quieter and, frankly, a bit creepy." Olga Marie remarked. "You just stood there, not making a sound and it was pretty unnerving."
"C-Chief!" Mashu said, clearly flustered.
"But seriously, it's a nice change. It makes you seem more… alive than before." Olga Marie said.
"I-I see." Mashu mumbled.
"Hey, princess. How long are you going to keep me waiting?"
Everyone turns around to see Leonardo da Vinci standing behind them.
"I don't remember inviting you here and what did I tell you about calling me that!?" Olga Marie yells out.
"And like always I ignore your demands~" da Vinci smiled.
"Um… chief? Who is this?" Ritsuka asked somewhat in awe and a bit jealous of the woman's beauty..
Olga Marie sighs. "Allow me to introduce you to Chaldea's Head of Engineering… as well as the bane of my existence." She mumbled the last part to herself.
"Oh come on, don't be like that princess. I am Chaldea's pride and joy after all." da Vinci said.
"Your presence… you are a Servant." Medusa said.
"Right you are~ I'm Chaldea's honorary tech advisor. The proud and brilliant inventor of the Renaissance! The one-and-only Leonardo da Vinci in the flesh!" da Vinci exclaims. "You can call me da Vinci for short. You don't get to see many pretty ladies like myself around here, right?"
Semiramis rolls her eyes and Artoria gives her a blank stare.
"Da… Vinci?" Ritsuka looks confused. "Hold on, da Vinci was a man not a woman." She turns to me looking betrayed. "Why didn't say anything about this!?"
I just shrug.
Da Vinci giggles. "You should always question conventional wisdom. But, is it really that important? Who was the first one to claim that I am a man or a woman? I pursue beauty with both my art and my inventions. It is who personified all ideals - all beauty. To me, the ideal beauty is the Mona Lisa." She twirls arounds showcasing her (his?) ample body. "That being said, don't you think this is an unavoidable result?"
"So what you're saying is, you're a pervert." I surmised.
Fou nods in agreement.
"Are you sure about that, Frank-kun? As culture matures, anything is possible. The desire to become a beautiful girl might one day be the norm." da Vinci said.
"Right. In what universe?" I said sarcastically but before she could reply, I put my index finger between her lips. "Don't answer that."
"Well, I believe that's enough from you, da Vinci." Olga Marie glares at her.
"So harsh, but you're right. From here on, I will support you with supplies, R&D with Chaldea and update Heroic Spirits' contracts. I am a Servant summoned by Chaldea, however, unlike you guys I can't jump to any era. Though if Ritsuka-chan has a contract with me, then it would be another matter." da Vinci states. "I'm looking forward to that fateful day. Caio~" She waves everyone goodbye and leaves the Command Room.
"Seriously, she can be such a pest at times." Olga Marie mumbled. "We're going to start the Rayshift process and unlike last time it will be done properly. Romani has already selected a time period with the smallest fluctuations. Are you ready?"
"Of course. I'm ready to go at any time." Ritsuka replied.
"Then step into the coffins." The two girls proceed to step inside the pods. Olga Marie turns to me. "You as well."
"I don't think that's necessary-"
"NOW!"
With that, I rush into the pod and it closes behind me.
"And one last thing… contact within the Singularity will not be easy - so if at some point your link to us disappears, I give you every right to act on behalf of Chaldea in any way to achieve your mission!" She turns around and walks through the doors.
"Rayshit preparations, complete. Destination set to Orleans, 1431 AD."
"Unsummon program, start. Commence Spiritron conversion."
The pods begin to glow blue as their bodies seem to enter a comatose-like state.
[The pods are analyzing our accumulated years and are forming an imaginary formula to hold our history in place. By doing this, it creates a pseudo-paradox where the subjects are either alive or dead, operating much like the theory of Schrodinger's Cat. I've already modified our accumulated history so that it would be easier to process. If the pod analyzed our true history, it would most definitely blow up]
"All procedures are cleared."
A light humming can be heard as CHALDEAS glows brighter. I look at my hand as I feel the dimensional displacement as my entire being is being relocated somewhere else.
"First Grand Order, commence operation!"
Wisps of light surround us and my vision becomes blurry; the next thing I knew I was on an open field instead of a building.
"Looks like we've arrived." I look around to find the other Servants are here as well.
"Fou." Fou appears from my coat pocket and climbs to my shoulder.
"Where did you come from?" I said as Fou nuzzles my cheek and purrs.
[...good boy]
"Based on the information from Chaldea… we are now in France, 1431." Mashu states. "It seems we are in the middle of the Hundred Years' War, during the war's respite period." However before she continues, Ritsuka moans out loud as she holds her stomach and mouth before leaning on a nearby tree, clearly suffering from motion sickness. Mashu stops what she is doing and checks on her Master.
[I'm detecting a massive influx of Magical Energy from our current position. There are also multiple Spiritron signatures around as well]
'How many Servants are in this era right now?' I ask as Gukado proceeds to throw out her stomach's contents while Mashu tries desperately to comfort her.
[Excluding our group, there are 17 Servants currently in this era and one living Heroic Spirit. Eight of these signatures appear to be corrupted. I'm also detecting two Ruler-class Servants as well but it's odd. The two Ruler-class Servants have identical Saint Graphs, meaning that the two Servants are actually one]
'But how is-'
"HOLY SHIT!" Cú Chulainn yelling catches me off guard.
"This… could mean trouble." EMIYA comments.
"▅▅!" Lu Bu snarls.
I turn to see what everyone's looking at only to blink a few times in incomprehension. What was in the sky was like some kind of band of light that seems to be distorting the very sky it's hanging onto. There was also something else… it's faint but I can sense there is a force driving it, a force so powerful that it only desires one thing; destruction.
Time, space, mana, od, life… everything is being broken down in an effort to erase its existence.
'Origin… What the hell am I looking at?' I asked, clearly in disturbed by what I'm sensing.
[I'm… not sure]
'Not sure? What do you mean you're not sure!? You are the Root, the archive of everything that is and ever will! How the hell do you not know what that is!?'
[Time itself is being distorted and fractured so that it can be harvested for energy. The anomaly is draining everything in this era and sending it somewhere else. Everything that has existed and will ever exist is being drawn in like a black hole]
"Can I stop it?" There has to be something I can do to stop that thing.
[Your mortal form will burn up from the intense heat if you get too close. Even if you stopped it, it wouldn't stop the degradation of time. Its best to find the source of the Singularity and shut it down before the damage is irreversible]
"Mashu…" Ritsuka turns to the Demi-Servant. "That's not natural, is it?"
"No… no it's not." Mashu replied.
"It is obviously an anomaly." The voice of Artoria made Ritsuka look at the King. "But… I don't have an assumption for what it could be."
"The amount of Magical Energy it is generating is incredible. Its mere presence is distorting the space around it. I did not think such a feat was even possible by humans." Semiramis remarks.
"Dangerous." Medusa said.
Ritsuka's wrist rings and presses a button and a hologram of Romani appears. "Yes, we're connected! Not the best quality, but I've got a video feed now!" However, just as he said this a hand smacks his face and pushes him out of the way.
"Fujimura, Frank, Mashu! Are you alright!? Respond!" Olga Marie exclaims.
"We're fine chief, but there's something you all have to see. I'm sending visuals now." Mashu said.
"... holy shit!" The director of Chaldea curses under her breath at the sight of the massive ring in the sky.
"A ring of light…? No, some form of magecraft cast over satellite orbit?" da Vinci ponders in deep thought. "It's almost the size of the North American continent."
"Whatever it is, there are definitely no records of such phenomena occurring in 1431." Romani concludes as he checks the scanners. "And look at these readings. That thing is generating energy equivalent to a star. Just by being near it is sure to roast you instantly." He states. "It's surely one of the reasons for the disappearance of our future. We'll continue to analyze it on our end. You guys concentrate on surveying onsite. Start by searching for leylines."
Mashu nods. "Understood."
"So we're going to explore this era and mingle with locals, that doesn't sound too hard." Ritsuka said, confident in her people skills.
"We also need to look for leylines, Senpai. We'll need them in order to transport supplies." Mashu reminds her.
"Right, right." Ritsuka said.
We begin to make the tread to find civilization, all the while pondering on what that phenomena in the sky truly was. Semiramis came up with a few theories but she quickly dismissed them as inconsequential.
"What do you think?" she suddenly asks me.
"Huh?" I didn't expect her to ask me. "Well if I had to guess, I think that what we're seeing in the sky right now isn't the real thing. Rather, what we're looking at might be the result of the phenomenon we're investigating rather than the cause."
"So you are assuming there are more out there." Artoria said.
"I'm saying we're not seeing the whole picture here, but until there's more information I can't discern their true purpose or origin." I told her. 'We can't make any assumptions based on what we can see. From what I've noticed the timeline's degradation is progressing at a slow but steady pace as if its purposely prolonging the end so that humanity dies a slow and painful death.'
"Master, there's something up ahead." Mashu's voice breaks my train of thought. Marching forward are a group of soldiers wearing chain mail along with a tunic and a helmet and carrying swords, spears, maces and the like; things that would be commonly seen in this era. The one in front of them was likely the leader of the scouting party as he was dressed in a blue Coat of Arms with three golden fleur-de-lis embroidered on it and was riding a horse.
"A patrol of French soldiers." EMIYA remarks. "What are your orders, Master?"
Ritsuka ponders for a bit. "Let's talk to them first. I don't want to fight unless we have to."
"Very well." Medusa said.
'Now it's my time to shine!' Ritsuka takes a step forward approaching the rider who stops in a half-step.
I noticed that the rider seemed surprised for a moment before looking apprehensive, almost shocked. Looking at his face, I can see the knight's attention was directed to my right… where Artoria is standing.
"Hi there-"
"WITCH!" Ritsuka didn't finish as the rider raised his horse. "WITCH! DRAGON WITCH!"
"Eh?" Ritsuka is dumbstruck.
"Fou?" Fou tilts his head equally perplexed.
The soldiers quickly begin to panic, now noticing Artoria's presence in the group and begin to tremble in fright.
"My, this is completely unexpected. Usually I'm the one accused of being a witch." Semiramis remarks with a smile, finding the situation quite amusing.
"Hahahahahahaha!" Cú Chulainn laughs. "You! A witch! Yeah when pigs fly!"
"Seeing someone else being called a witch… is a new experience." Medusa comments.
"..." Lu Bu said.
Artoria sees this and narrows her eyes. "I am not a witch…" A black aura begins to slowly envelop her.
"RETREAT! RETREAT!" The soldiers quickly turn back and run as fast as they can, their heavy armor now serving as a hindrance rather than protection.
"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" The knight rushes away on his horse, easily passing through his soldiers.
"And there they go, running with their tail between their legs." Cú Chulainn remarks, disappointment evident in his voice.
"It's an unpleasant sight," Artoria merely shakes her head at the scene, "the commander leaving his soldiers to save himself… simply distasteful."
As the soldiers make their escape, they don't notice the sudden blip in their vision and abruptly stop as someone is now standing in their way.
"Sorry, but we have some questions and running wouldn't really answer them." I told them.
'How did he do that!?' A good majority of the group exclaim as they look at the spot where I was and the place that I am now.
'When did he get in front of us!?' The knight thought in fright but managed to keep his voice even. "Soldiers, there is no other choice! We must fight!" With the fact that running away is no longer an option, the wayward soldiers reluctantly turn back to the group of Servants and their Master to which they ready their weapons in the direction of their supposed enemy.
"Well, this escalated quickly." EMIYA comments as the platoon marches towards them.
"All right! I was worried I wasn't going to have fun!" Cú Chulainn smirks with a predatory glint in his eyes.
"▂▂▃▃▅▅ーーー!" Lu Bu roars ready for battle.
"Yeah, let's cut loose!" Cú Chulainn exclaims.
"Oh dear…" Semiramis looks at the soldiers. "Even knowing that they are at a disadvantage, they understand that they must fight or die trying."
"Such people always die early on the battlefield. If their hearts aren't prepared for battle then they should not be wearing that armor." Artoria states.
"In that case, they should not be fighting." Medusa turns to Artoria at the comment. "If they understand that they will lose if they fight us… then wouldn't it be easier to accept the inevitable?"
"That is rather pessimistic for someone who is fighting to save all of humanity." Semiramis comments turning to Artoria. "But what I'm more interested in is this 'Dragon Witch' those soldiers were yelling about. I honestly doubt you were alive during the Hundred Year War."
"Of course I was not alive." Artoria responds with a negative, completely unconcerned about her death. "However, 'Dragon' and 'Witch' are closely related to me."
"Hm… is it possible that we might be dealing with someone related to you or somebody close to your lineage?" Semiramis said. "Do you believe that may be the case?"
Artoria remains silent at this as the possibility crosses her mind. Could someone from her era have been summoned here? Could it be… her?
"Come on then, henchmen of the Dragon Witch! Come and fight us, unless you are afraid to die!" The knight taunts though if you pay close attention you can see their trembling knees and knocking teeth - they were acting brave in the face of, from their perspective, imminent death.
[This is getting ridiculous. At this rate, we'll never get anywhere]
"Yeah… we wouldn't be able to get anything out of these guys but we can't let them get in our way." My eyes change into a translucent blue-like color. "[Somnum]" The instant I said it the platoon dropped to the ground like puppets whose strings had just been cut. The knight collapses on his horse and slides to the right where he promptly falls; even the horse falls asleep.
I put my hands in my pockets and nonchalantly walk towards the group who all share the same weird look. "What?"
"What did you just do?" EMIYA asks.
"Well, they weren't cooperating so I took initiative so that they wouldn't bother us." I explained.
"Did… did you kill them?" Mashu asks with apprehension.
I arch an eyebrow. "Of course not. I simply put them to sleep."
"But how?" Semiramis asks dumbfounded. If he had used Magic or even magecraft, she would have sensed the shift in Magical Energy. From what she saw, it seemed like he just… commanded them to sleep.
"Simple, the power of the word. That's old magic." I quip. "Humans always make it a habit of giving objects titles and names, and over time those words gain power through their notoriety. Simple words are the oldest so they are more powerful than most." I take an index finger and scratch Fou's chin.
"Kyuuu~" Fou purrs, clearly liking the show of affection.
"Anyways, judging from the route this platoon took we're probably close to a village or town. Let's go." I walk onwards following the path as everyone gets their bearings.
"That was… not what I was expecting." EMIYA remarks.
"Ya think!? I was so fired up and now all I'm filled with is disappointment!" Cú Chulainn exclaims in annoyance.
Lu Bu huffs in agreement(?).
"He is quite a mystery. He is not a Servant yet calling him a Magician might be a bit of stretch." Semiramis smiles. "He has certainly caught my attention."
Artoria shakes her head. "He tries very hard not to get us involved… even if it is a meaningless gesture in the end."
"Even if that's the case, I believe there's more to his actions that we are not seeing." Medusa adds, sensing something from their mysterious comrade.
"Senpai, we should get moving." Mashu nudges her partner.
"O-okay." Ritsuka stares at the sleeping soldiers as they walk to the side and catch up with Frank.
