"What won't make it look like I'm trying too hard, Aisha?" I asked as we stood in the flower shop that was down the street from my parents' dealership. "I don't want to come off as desperate or something like that. I just want to show Tory that I care about her."
"Love," Aisha said, rolling her eyes. "I believe the word you used when talking to Moon was love."
"Yes. It was."
I sighed as I looked at the flowers in front of us.
"Was?"
"Not was. Is."
"Sam, what's going on?"
"I don't know. This is all sort of new to me. You know…."
"But you'd dated both Robby and Miguel."
"That was different, Aisha. They were the ones doing these sorts of things for me. Not the other way around."
"So, put yourself in their shoes when you were dating them. What would Robby or Miguel buy you."
"Do you think she'd want an octopus plushie?" I asked, thinking back to my first date with Miguel. The one where he'd won me a plushie from the arcade at the beach.
"That's something to think about," Robby said, appearing at Aisha's shoulder as though the mere mention of him or Miguel made Robby appear. "What's going on?"
"Sam's trying to figure out what to get Tory for their first date present," Aisha said, suppressing a giggle.
"Miguel wrote me a poem," Robby said, smiling while looking lost in thought. "It was both cheesy and romantic at the same time. I would never have thought to come up with something like that."
"Which is why you've both come to me for advice, right?" Aisha said, looking between the two of us.
We both looked down at our feet and nodded.
"I've never had to get anyone any sort of date gift," Aisha told us. "Sam, why don't you and Robby go to your father? I mean he's been married to your mother for how long now?"
"Long enough to have two kids," Robby said, raising an eyebrow at the suggestion. "I mean it's not a half-bad idea."
"Need I remind you that…."
Robby burst into laughter before I had even finished my sentence. "That was pretty funny," he said, smirking. "Your dad thinking he was playing footsy with his wife while playing footsy with your girlfriend the entire time."
"What?" Aisha asked, trying to suppress another round of laughter. "What did Tory do?"
"Guys! This is important to me," I said, trying to bring your attention back to the problem at hand.
"I still kind of agree with Aisha's plan though," Robby said, looking at me. "He probably does know enough about what to get a significant other for all occasions."
"Okay. We'll go to my dad. But don't bring up the whole footsy with Tory situation. Mom's still pretty upset about that."
"I promise," Robby said.
"Aren't you kids supposed to be out buying presents for Valentine's Day or something like that?" my dad asked as we entered LaRusso auto dealership.
"That was last week, Dad," I said, sitting down in the chair across from his desk. "Um…it's just….As you know Tory and I have our first official date as a couple…."
"I thought that was last week," my dad said, smirking as he used my own words against me. "You want to know what to get her for your second date?"
I nodded. "Robby's sort of in the same boat too," I said, nodding towards where Robby awkwardly stood behind Aisha.
"Robby's dad would probably kill me for giving him that sort of advice."
"He actually told me to go ask your advice," Robby said, stepping forward a bit. "In fact, he's not sure what to get Carmen for their anniversary."
"Roses."
"What?" we both asked, looking at my father as though he'd grown a third head or something like that.
"Roses. When in doubt the most romantic gift in the world is roses. When you've been married for as long as I have you learn that flowers can solve almost every problem."
"Roses?" I asked, looking at him as my mother brought in a bouquet of the same said flowers with a faint smile on her face.
My father nodded.
"This doesn't make up for the fact that you were playing footsy with our daughter's girlfriend two weeks ago."
"Apparently not every problem can be solved with roses," Robby said, trying not to laugh at the look on my father's face. "Thank you, Mr. LaRusso. You've been a very big help."
"Yes, thanks, Dad," I said, grabbing Robby and shoving him towards the door with a stern look.
The lunchroom was busy as Aisha and I stood in line to get our lunches. She'd been very busy helping Sam with something yesterday that she didn't have time to help me with setting up my date with Sam tonight. Which was why I'd reached out to Miguel for help. We'd planned a pretty romantic double date.
"Excuse me," a man holding a single red rose asked, looking at me. "Are you Tory Nichols?"
"I am," I said, looking at him in confusion. "But I have a girlfriend and I'm pretty sure that she wouldn't appreciate me seeing someone on the side."
The man laughed and handed me the rose. "Cute," he said, rolling his eyes and motioning for something or someone else.
"What's his problem?" I asked Aisha as another man with a single white rose walked up followed by at least twelve other men and women with roses of varying colors. The final one had a note attached to his rose.
I took the roses one by one as they came until I had one of the hugest most colorful bouquets of roses I'd ever seen. I gently sniffed them as I could feel all eyes in the lunchroom on me.
"Don't forget the note," Aisha said, tapping my shoulder with the note which must have dropped from the rose when I added the last one to the group.
I handed her the bouquet in order to open the envelope which the note was sealed into. Inside was a simple yet romantic poem.
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I am in love
So, check yes Juliet if you are too.
I looked across the lunchroom as the crowd started to part to reveal Sam standing there with a huge smile on her face. I nodded as I ran across the room and pulled her into a kiss. I couldn't help smirking as I heard Miguel and Robby wolf whistle at us. This was shaping up to be one of the best days ever and it wasn't over yet.
I hope you all enjoyed Rose for a Rose as much as I enjoyed writing it.
