Once upon a time in the small kingdom of Encino there lived a princess who lived most of her life sheltered in a tower of protectiveness by her parents. This princess's name was Samantha. Sam for short. Her parents were King Daniel and Queen Amanda. The rulers of the LaRusso kingdom. She also had a younger brother who would eventually take the throne upon the king's passing because that was what was expected of a ruler and his family. No one knew except for a handful of trusted people that the king intended to give the kingdom over to his eldest. His only daughter. His pride and joy.
"Are you kidding me, Danny?" his cousin asked, slapping the king on the shoulder causing him to slosh some of his coffee out of his mug. "Do you think that anyone is going to follow a girl? I mean sure Sam's smart but the whole kingdom has been talking about Anthony coming to the throne since he was born."
"It's my will that my daughter inherits her birthright," King Daniel said, watching as his wife and daughter spoke in the kitchen. "I've been training Sam for this since she was old enough to understand what her birthright was. She's smart. She's dedicated to her people. She will make a great queen someday."
"And Anthony?"
"He's a good kid. He just doesn't have the patience or the want to become the leader that our people need. He would rather sit around playing games all day. A good leader knows when it's time to sit around and play and when it's time to get serious. I think one of these days my son might learn these virtues but not soon enough to become king."
"Are you sure we can't talk you out of this, Daniel?" his mother asked, stroking her son's cheek as she took in his serious face.
"I am," he said, looking over at where his daughter was laughing and telling her mother about something from her classes that she'd learned. "I am more sure about this than anything else in my life besides Amanda."
"King Daniel plans on making his daughter the queen of the kingdom when he steps down soon," the young knight Robby told the grey-haired man who'd employed him to spy on the king and his family.
Sir John Kreese had at one time been a loyal subject of the rulers of Encino. But when King Daniel's father was taken out of the picture and the young boy's mother took regency he started to look for a better option than the young LaRusso king and his mother. He'd thought he had one in Robby's father. Sir John Lawerence who was affectionately known as Johnny. But Johnny had disappointed the older lord in more ways than he could count. Recently it had become known to the older lord that Sir John had become friends with King Daniel. Now hearing this didn't make Sir John Kreese feel any better.
"Are you sure about this, Robby?" Kreese asked, watching the young boy's face. It was just as expressive as his father's. One shift would be able to point out a lie or falsehood. "I need you to be sure about what you are telling me."
"I am, sir," the dark-haired boy said, looking with great defiance at his liege lord. "They were talking about it earlier this morning. His cousin was putting forth LaRusso's son but he kept insisting that the daughter was his chosen heir."
"When does this blessed occasion take place?"
If he could figure out when this occasion of King Daniel's stepping down would be John Kreese could then make plans to take out the daughter beforehand. If there was no daughter to take control of things King Daniel would have no choice but give over control of his power to his son. The son would be an easier target than the daughter for getting what the Nation of Cobra needed to be passed to be passed.
"I'm not sure," Robby said, sounding like he'd failed his master. Both the one who was speaking to him now and the one who he was betraying by being here at this moment. "But I know that he wants her to get some more training under her belt before he steps down. He doesn't want to leave the princess unprepared for when she becomes queen."
"That gives me a wonderful idea," John Kreese smiled a smile that filled the young knight with dread. One that meant trouble for the young princess in question. The girl that Robby had befriended when he first started working at the palace. "Do you know where Lady Nichols is?"
Tory straightened her gown once more as she stood rather awkwardly in the cold meeting hall that was used for important Nation of Cobra business. The fire was burning merrily away in the fireplace but it did nothing warm her. Not even the warm layers of clothes did anything to provide heat for her. She'd felt this way since she'd first heard Lord Kreese speaking of King Daniel and his family. The cold venom that had been spat during that meeting and the numerous plans to try and take out the family had more than a little bit to do with the chill that was pressing down upon her now.
"Lady Nichols," Lord Kreese said, walking jauntily up to her and putting a coldly warm hand on her arm in greeting.
"Lord Kreese," she replied, trying to keep a cold tone from her voice and the shiver going down her spine from showing how she truly felt, "to what do I owe the pleasure of your calling upon me?"
"I have a special need for your particular talents, Tory," he said, using her given name a thing which most noble men wouldn't do to a woman unless she was theirs by either marriage or birth. Which Tory was neither to John Kreese.
"Which talents are those?" she asked, playing coy as she drew away from Kreese to sit down at the table where refreshments were being laid out. She nodded a greeting at Sir Robby Keene who was sitting in silence already at the table.
"The talents that ensnare people who speak with you as easily as a hunter ensnares an innocent young rabbit in his trap," Robby answered, steepling his finger and earning a praising look from Kreese. It was enough to make Tory feel sick to her stomach.
"Who exactly am I ensnaring this time?" she asked, knowing this wasn't the first time they had called upon her talents and it certainly wasn't going to be the last time either. "Do I know this person?"
"No," Kreese said, smiling gently at her as indicated she should sit. "You don't know this person yet. But it shouldn't matter either way. Your only goal is to ensnare her and get her out of the way."
"Her?"
Tory could feel the cold pit fill her stomach. She had never told anyone about her proclivities towards her sex. She tried very hard to hide these facts from the rest of the nobles of the realm. Two young ladies could bear children to continue a family name together. To hide her affinities she'd even dated her best friend Lord Miguel Diaz, and the young knight sitting opposite from her.
"Yes," Robby said, smirking at her, and right then a there Tory knew that he had told Kreese about her secret. "Her name is Samantha but she prefers to go by Sam."
"That's the king's daughter," she said, feeling her heart speed up at the mention of the gorgeous young princess. They'd only met once but it was long enough to leave an impression on Tory. That and to leave Tory weak in the knees.
"The king's heir," Kreese corrected her.
"But doesn't he have a son?"
"He does but he's chosen to have his daughter inherit. You can see where that will cause a lot of problems for the Nation of Cobra, can't you?"
"Perhaps it's time we do things properly," she said, raising an eyebrow and looking between Sir Robby, Lord John, and Lord Silver who'd just entered the room.
"Or perhaps you can just do as you are told," Lord Terry Silver said, pushing a vial of something towards her. "You must get her to drink this. Then Princess Samantha won't be a problem for us any longer."
"You're alright with this?" she asked, looking over at Sir Robby. She knew well enough to know that at one point he and Princess Samantha had had a connection.
"Yes," Sir Robby said, nodding a cold glint to his eyes as he did so. Something seemed very wrong with him. This wasn't the Robby she'd dated at one point. He seemed to be a much colder shell of himself.
"Fine," she said, taking the vial and standing up. "Am I done here?"
"You may leave," Silver said, the cold smile on his face scaring her mother than she could say. It meant danger. Not just for the princes but also Tory herself if she didn't do as she was told.
Meanwhile, a great feast was being prepared where the princess would be announced as the heir apparent of the LaRusso kingdom. People from all over the realms were coming to the kingdom of Encino just to see the princess and her family. To celebrate all her contributions to the realms. To celebrate her coming to power upon her father's stepping down which she hoped wasn't going to be happening until a long time from now.
"Um-hum," Miguel cleared his voice from behind her. Miguel had been Samantha's first boyfriend before she figured out that she was more interested in the fairer sex. He'd been a sweet boy but then he'd turned sour against her for a while when she started to date Sir Robby Keene.
"Miguel, what are you doing here?" she asked, pulling him into a hug and causing a gaggle of nobles nearby to whisper.
"I couldn't pass up celebrating the achievements of my favorite person, now could I?" he asked, glaring at one of the nobles who was pointing and whispering. We both heard the word marriage.
"You truly are a wonderful friend," she said, saying the friend loud enough to cause the whispering to stop. "How have things been for you?"
"Pretty good," Miguel said, smiling and tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "I met this guy. He's perfect and…"
"Met or online met?"
"Online met," Miguel said, looking at his boots. He was pretty much in the same boat that she was. He'd only asked her out to keep people off his back.
"Do you know his name? Have you traded pictures yet? Is he hot? Does he have a female friend for me to date?"
"No," Miguel said, shaking his head. "I don't know his name. We haven't traded pictures yet. I think he's hot. He sounds like he's hot. But as I said we haven't traded pictures yet. As far as female friends go I think he does have one or two. But I'm not sure if they swing your way if you know what I mean?"
"My lady," a server said, bowing to the princess as she held out a goblet of wine. "This was sent to you by the young lady over yonder." She pointed towards the most gorgeous girl that had ever been seen in the princess's entire life.
"Thank her," she said, smiling as she took the goblet and raised it to the beauty in question. Something seemed wrong though. She smiled but it didn't entirely light up her eyes. "Ask her her name for me?"
"Of course, my lady," the servant said, bowing once before walking away from us.
"She looks familiar," Miguel said, watching the young woman and the servant whisper to each other. "Like I know her from somewhere I just can't put my finger on where I know her from."
"I know," Sam replied, trying to wrack her mind for why this girl seemed so familiar.
That is when her father motioned for her to come and stand by his side. She bade Miguel farewell and took the drink with her. Making her way through the crowded Great Hall full of people she could hear whispers of an attack perpetrated by her family's enemies. The Nation of Cobra. But she couldn't tell what it was or who it would be against. She had no clue that it could be against her. She was just a princess. Who attacked princesses?
"Ladies and gentlemen," King Daniel said, causing everyone to go silent, "I would like you all to join me in a toast. Today I name my daughter Samantha to be my heir apparent. She will be a wise and noble queen and I'm sure that you will all join me in drinking to her name." He held his goblet a loft. "To Princess Samantha! Long may she reign!"
"To Princess Samanta! Long may she reign!"
Princess Samantha raised her goblet. She could see the gorgeous young lady trying to make her way quickly through the crowd. Her eyes never leave Sam's the entire time. She was shaking her head and trying to make her voice known over the crowd. But it was so very loud and by the time Sam could make out the words the girl's lips were forming it was far too late to do anything besides sink against her father's side as she slowly fell to the floor.
King Daniel stared in shocked silence as his only daughter and heir apparent fell to the floor. His blood had turned to ice as soon as he'd seen the word poison or was it potion that had fallen from the young girl's lips. The one who'd raced towards Sam as she'd brought the goblet to her lips. If he'd been fast enough to understand what was going he'd have tried to stop Sam from drinking the wine. But he was still under the impression that no one would willingly hurt their crowned princess.
"Daniel, what happened?" Queen Amanda said, sinking to examine their daughter. "Who did this to our baby?"
"I don't know," he said as Miguel made his way over to them. He watched in horrified terror as Miguel felt for a pulse. "Is she…."
"No," a female voice said, causing the king to turn and look in the direction it had come from. "It's not. It's a sleeping potion. One that can only be broken by true love's kiss."
"How do you know this?" Queen Amanda asked, looking up at the girl from her daughter's side. "Did you do this to my child?"
"Not willingly, my queen," the girl said, looking down at her feet. "My name is Lady Tory Nichols. My family is assassins who work for the Nation of Cobra. But I would rather have not had anything to do with this."
"What do you mean?" King Daniel asked, his face growing dark with anger. "What part did you play in my daughter's condition?"
"The potion was an old one of my family's making which I had tweaked to make the effects more…" Tory indicated the snoring, drooling princess on the floor. "That. But I had never meant for it to be used against your daughter. I promise."
"Take her away," King Daniel said, motioning for the guards to come to take the young girl.
"But I didn't me…."
"Perhaps you can think about your actions more in the dungeons."
As she was being drug away she could hear varying whispers go through the crowd. Most of them outcries of hatred for Tory. Others felt bad for the young girl who'd seemed so upset at what she'd been made to do. But the thing that hurt more than any of that was the fact that Sir Robby was the one leading her to the dark cells of the dungeons. She could read how bad he felt for her but she didn't care because he was part of the reason she was in this situation, to begin with. He'd told Kreese about her family's potions and abilities.
Day turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Months turned into years. No matter what the king and queen tried nothing seemed to awaken Princess Sam. She slept through everything.
They tried to give her potions that should have countered the effects of Tory's potion. They tried healing her with a bezoar. They even tried bringing a doctor along with a healer from the forest. Neither man could do a thing to rouse the princess.
The kingdom had drawn into the longest period of grief that it had ever seen since the death of the King's father. No one sang anymore. No one was happy. There was no dancing or merry-making. Only effort after effort to bring back their princess.
"Why isn't anything working?" King Daniel asked, looking at his friend Sir Johnny Lawerence as they sat by the princess's bedside.
"Maybe we're trying too hard?" Miguel suggested.
"Really, Diaz? That's your answer." He turned to Daniel. "You said that the girl who did this said something strange, right? What was it? The potion was an old family one. Maybe she would know how to counter the thing?"
"Are saying let the person who did this to my daughter out of the dungeons? That's a worse idea than when you set up Kresse to take over the Nation of Cobra. You do remember that one, right?"
"I do and don't think I'm not regretting that action," Johnny said, looking at the sleeping princess. He reached out a handkerchief and wiped some drool off the princess's cheek. "Who knew princess's drooled this much?"
"Johnny, I'm being serious here."
"So was I. Before. When I mentioned letting the girl come and see if she can help us break this potion curse whatever."
"We really don't have anything to lose," Miguel pointed out. "The worse thing that could happen is that she won't know how to break the thing, right?"
"Right," Johnny confirmed.
"Fine," King Daniel said, letting out the breath he hadn't known he'd taken. "Sir Robby, please bring Lady Nichols to us."
"They're calling for you," Robby said, looking at Tory through the bars of the cell. "You know what Kreese is going to say if help them bring back the princess, right?"
"You know what happens to me if I don't, right?" she asked him, looking him in the eyes. "You end up sharing pictures with that hottie you met over the internet yet?"
"Not yet," Robby said, looking at his feet. "But the way he speaks he kind of feels familiar, you know?"
Tory nodded. She could hear his key in the lock. She would have to pick a side soon and she'd have to make it a quick decision. There could be no going back.
"Do you ever stop to think maybe we chose the wrong side?" she asked as Robby led her towards the bright light of the outside world. "Maybe we belong on the side of the LaRusso's and your father?"
"I'm starting to think that more and more," Robby said, leading me through the darkened halls.
Everywhere Tory looked was marked by the passing of time and grief. She could feel the grief as prominently as anyone else in this building. The blacks of the curtains that were stretched over the window to keep the light out. The dark somber clothes of everyone in the castle. The mood was as dark as everything else was and it didn't get better when people saw Tory walking down the hall either.
"We're here," Robby said, stopping at a door and knocking.
"Enter," King Daniel's voice called through the wood. It was strange to hear the usually jovial, happy-go-lucky voice choked with tears. But Tory couldn't blame the man either. This was his daughter and his heir. He had every right to be upset with what was happening.
The door opened and Tory wished that she could go back to her blackened cell with no light. The sight of Sam lying on her bed unconscious was enough to bring tears to her eyes. But what made it worse was seeing the effects it had upon the king, queen, and young prince. Even Sir Johnny wasn't his normal cheery, joke-making self.
"Lady Nichols," King Daniel said, taking a deep breath and letting it out once more, "you said something about knowing how this worked." He indicated his daughter and the potion the young girl had used on his daughter.
Tory nodded. "As I said it was an old family potion that I tweaked. Usually tasting it would mean immediate death. But I couldn't do that to the princess. I tweaked the potion so that it wouldn't kill her but just put her in a very deep sleep."
"Then you know how to counter the potion?" he asked, looking at the girl as though she was the only thing standing between not just Sam and death but himself and death too.
"It can only be broken with true love's kiss," Tory told him. "Does she have…."
Daniel looked at Miguel.
Miguel shook his head, holding up his hands. "Might be a small problem with that solution and me," Miguel said, looking towards the door where Sir Robby stood. "He's more my type than she is. Sorry."
"Well then we need to get as many princes as possible in here until she wakes," King Daniel said, looking over Sir Johnny who was shaking his head. "What?"
"Lady Nichols, you have a solution you'd like to try?" Sir Johnny said, raising an eyebrow as he watched the girl watching the princess sadly.
She nodded.
"Go ahead."
"Johnny what are…."
Before the fear of the moment could still Tory's movements she did the first thing that she felt was right. She leaned down and pressed her lips to the princess's. They were soft and warm and slightly damp from all the drooling. But it didn't matter to Tory. If it worked perhaps she could work her way to forgiveness and possibly earn herself the princess's love.
She could hear a murmur as people gathered around the open door of the princess's room. But Tory didn't care about any of the rest of them. All she cared about was the fact that she could feel the princess's lip moving against her own. She opened her eyes to find herself staring into the blue eyes of the princess. It had worked.
"It's you?" Tory whispered, smiling. She'd found her true love and she'd realized that from the moment she'd met the princess years earlier she'd been the dark-haired girl's true love as well.
"It is," Sam replied, pulling Tory into a hug as all in attendance burst into happy applause.
Things went back to somewhat normal after that. Tory and Robby were forgiven for their part in the incident with the princess. A thing that caused both of them to leave the Nation of Cobra. Tory promised to never look back.
Miguel finally ended up trading pictures with that hottie over the internet. It turned out that he had been right that when he said Sir Robby was more his type. Robbie and Miguel had started dating a little bit after that. They were perfectly happy in their relationship even though they had both at one point dated the princess. They knew they were much more in love with each other.
Sir John Lawerence and his new nation that he'd found, The Nation of Fanged Eagles, joined forces with King Daniel and his forces. They trained hard and learned from each other. Knowing that the time would come when they would have to fight the Nation of the Cobra and overcome them.
"As for the Lady Tory and Princess Sam, they too began a relationship with each other. One that made them both extremely happy. Happy enough that Princess Sam gave Lady Tory a promise ring that when they were older they would marry and rule the realm together. Uniting the kingdom under their love. And as all good fairy tales end, they lived happily ever after.
The End.
I hope you all enjoyed Once Upon a True Love's Kiss as much as I enjoyed writing it.
