"Be careful," Sam whispered gently as my hand started to shake. She seemed to be shaking with excitement as I concentrated on what I was doing.
"I am being careful," I told her, taking a deep calming breath and trying to steady my hand. After all, shaking hands wouldn't help matters much where this was concerned.
I studied what I was doing from every angle. Left, right, top, and bottom. It seemed a really impossible task. My fingers gently began their work once more as I slowly moved them up and down against the smooth surface.
"Any day now," Robby chided me loudly, causing my hand to jerk slightly.
"You're lucky that I hadn't chosen a block yet, Keene," I said, glaring across the table at him. Going back to my scrutiny of the Jenga towers I finally could see the block that I wanted.
Sam must have seen the block that I was going for too. Her eyes widened in shock as my finger traced gently across the outside block on the bottom.
"Are you sure about this move, Tory?" she asked, watching as I looked at the block I'd chosen carefully in order to see if I could remove it without making the tower fall.
"I am," I said, finally seeing how I could do this without bringing the things down on me. "Kiss for good luck?"
"Of course," she said, giving me a gentle peck on the lips. "Now don't forget to be careful."
I raised an eyebrow at her as I gently nudged the block out from under the others. I could see the tower begin to sway a bit and held my breath. If the tower fell now that would mean that Robby and Miguel would win the game. Them winning the game would mean that they got to choose what our Halloween costumes were supposed to be this year.
A sigh of relief left me when the swaying of the tower stopped. I smirked across the table at Miguel and his boyfriend Robby. I could see their shocked looks. They had thought that they had this thing won. But they didn't know well enough to know that Tory Nichols was a Jenga playing master.
"What sort of witchcraft is this?" Miguel asked, glaring at me.
I shrugged and walked over to take my seat next to Sam. "Your turn, boys," I smirked as I watched them whisper amongst each other.
"How are we supposed to beat that move?" I heard Robby ask.
"I've got an idea," Miguel said, moving over to the tower and looking at it from every angle as I once had. He seemed to have gotten the same idea that I had because he zeroed in the lowermost row of blocks.
"Are you sure about this, Miguel?" Robby asked, watching as Miguel zeroed in on the opposite side of the block that I had taken before moving his hand to extract the block.
"I am," he said, swiping the block out with one finger.
A loud crash came as soon as the block had been removed. The tower had fallen and Sam and I had won. I could see the shocked look on Miguel's face as Sam and I did a little victory dance to celebrate.
"How did that not work?" Miguel asked, confusion coloring his face.
"You have to know when to be careful and when to take a chance," I told him as the door opened and Sam's father stuck his head into the room.
"Is everything alright here?" he asked, looking at the sour-looking boys and Sam's and my cheerful-looking face.
"Everything's fine, Dad," Sam said, grinning. "Tory and I just won the right to pick out our group Halloween costume is all."
"Oh."
As Mr. LaRusso left Robby got up and started stacking the blocks up again. "Best two out of three?"
Sam and I shook our heads.
"Double or nothing?" Miguel asked, looking between us and them.
"I'm in," I said, looking at Sam. "That is if you are too?"
"Yeah. That way we get to pick out the costumes two years running," Sam said, smirking.
Who knew Jenga could be so competitive and fun?
I hope you all enjoyed Jenga! As much as I enjoyed writing it.
