A delicious scent filtered through the apartment that my girlfriend and I shared with her mother. I knew that Tory was a good cook but this smelled better than anything she had ever made me in or entire history together.
I could hear her whispering to her little brother as she cooked. Probably telling him to take their mother her breakfast. That was one of the things I really loved about Tory. She was willing to put aside her own happiness to take care of her mother and brother. That took a lot of guts.
Getting up out of bed I walked to the door and opened it. Tory had her back to me and was flipping some pancakes while listening to some music on her phone. I watched as she started to dance like no one was watching her. I had only ever seen this side of Tory when we were alone and she thought no one was watching. The fun side. The side that didn't feel the need to be defensive or go on the offense due to something anyone said.
I walked over and wrapped my arms around her waist, putting my head on her shoulder. Causing her to panic a bit until she noticed that it was me.
"I thought you were still asleep, Sam," she said, turning around in my arms a smile crossing her face.
"I was," I said, grinning back. "But then I smelled the most delicious thing I'd ever smelt in my entire life and I knew I needed to find out what it was."
"I'm sure you've had better pancakes," Tory said, motioning towards the plate ladened with pancakes of varying shapes and sizes. "Your dad makes the most amazing pancakes remember?"
"I'm sure you could give him a run for his money," I said, brushing my lips against her cheek. "Plus unless you're cooking Banana Rama Pancakes…."
"Banana what?"
"Bananarama Pancakes. They're the ones that my father makes me all the time. They're my absolute favorite thing he makes."
"I mean," Tory looked at the plate of pancakes. "They're no Bananarama but I think they'll do the trick."
She then pulled away from me and motioned me back. I cocked an eyebrow at her. What was this all about? Was she expecting me to catch the pancakes with my mouth? That was something one would expect from someone like my brother.
"I was sorting hoping to surprise you with breakfast in bed," Tory said, giggling a bit. I enjoyed the sound of her laughing. It didn't happen very often. There was much too much going on in her life. But when she did laugh it always put a smile on my face and I want to laugh right along with her.
"Oh," I said, grinning. "I'm sorry to ruin the surprise."
"You didn't. You just made the surprise that much better." She picked up the plate of pancakes and carried it over to a tray with a small plate of bacon, some orange slices, a couple of pieces of toast, yogurt, and a glass of orange juice. "Now back to bed with you or it won't be breakfast in bed. It'll just be breakfast."
I giggled as I led the way back into our room. If you'd have told me when I first met Tory Nichols at the beach club that we'd be here like this I'd have called you a liar. But she'd changed a lot since then and so had I.
Jumping on the bed I grinned as Tory set the tray on my lap. But the grin left my lips as she turned to leave. I quickly reached out my hand to stop her.
"Aren't you going to share this with me?" I asked, looking up at her hopefully. "This is a lot of food."
"Forks, Sam. I'm just going to get some forks."
"Oh." I could feel my face heat up as she went and got the forks.
Breakfast was wonderful. The pancakes were something I had never had before. A recipe that Tory had made up on the fly with some craisins and chocolate chips and a dash of pumpkin pie spice. They were some of the most delicious things I had ever tasted in my entire life.
"I could get used to this," I said, smiling as I watched her.
"Me too," she replied.
The rest of the day would more than likely be hectic. With Miyagi Do and Cobra Kai training but for right now everything felt right. And it was.
I hope you all enjoyed Surprise Me as much as I enjoyed writing it.
