The Jeweled Butterfly: Part 1

Long ago, the world above and below was ruled by the Titans. Led by the heroic God of Thunder, Shining Armor, the twelve new gods of the pantheon took control of the world. Shining Armor, fresh from the heroism of his triumph over Celestia, the ruler of the old ways, decided on lots to dive up the realms. He, naturally, drew the most illustrious lot and, with his new wife, Cadence, took dominion in the skies and Olympus.

Many more gods, among them Rarity, the goddess of love, born from the old ones took refuge in Olympus. Some gods, however, took up residence in their own realms. Twilight, the Goddess of the Harvest, found shelter on the land where she would work with the humans. There, she would raise her daughter, the Goddess of Spring, Fluttershy, in peace.

One god, the oldest of the sons of Celestia, Discord, drew the shortest lot and so was given dominion over the world below. He departed quietly from the boisterousness of Olympus and down to his dominion. Before he left, however, there were some negotiations to be done about his lot…

"Brother, what brings you to Olympus? I thought that you had left for the realms below."

Discord approached his brother, who was reclining on a lush divan. He looked utterly at home, already.

"I have come to ask for recompense for my lot."

Shining Armor waved away his servants, some pretty nymphs with hair bound up tightly, and sat up.

"Are you here to ask me for another lot? You know that was the only fair-"

Discord put up a large hand. His face remained composed as ever, even as his brother's face was slipping into a slight frown.

"I am not here to challenge your, though newfound, authority. You were given first choice among the goddesses to take as queen. Our other brother was given that choice as well. Why not I?"

The expression on the King of the Gods morphed into a bemused one. He raised an eyebrow.

"I didn't know you had any interest in matters of the heart."

"I don't."

Shining Armor sighed.

"You are tiresome, brother. Why, then, ask for a bride?"

Discord exhaled softly.

"I am not at leisure, at such a moment, to reveal such information. I do not require a consort, but a queen. The Underworld needs a queen as much as it needs a king. Therefore, I humbly ask the King of the Gods for his favor."

The God of the Underworld gave a slight bow, smirking to himself as he did so.

It appeared to have worked as the King of the God stroked his chin.

"Very well. Then, I give you my word that, when you have found a goddess that suits you, you may have her."

Discord grinned, golden eyes flashing.

"Agreed. Now, swear it."

"Very well, brother. I, Shining Armor, swear on the mighty river Styx that whomever you shall choose will be your bride."

Then, from under Discord's himation, he produced a beautifully forged necklace. It was a pink sapphire set in a silver mount on a silver chain. It gimmered in the light from the clouds. Shining Armor sat, transfixed at the expensive object.

"Jewels are but one perk of being a god of the below. Whomever I give this favor to shall be my bride."

And, as abruptly as he had come, Discord left.

The centuries rolled by without further interruption from the God of the Underworld. Shining Armor, still proud on this throne, had chosen eleven other gods to rule by his side. Together they ruled the Earth from Olympus, spending easy days amidst pleasure and gossip.

Below, on the Earth, the fields were cultivated and the people content. The bright days of Rainbow's (the Goddess of the Sun) sunlight lent themselves well to the growth of crops. The weather, unless Shining Armor was enraged, was generally mild. Twilight, the goddess and mother of the Earth, remained and tended it well.

Twilight stood in the middle of a wheat field. Her hair, normally pin-straight and orderly, was bundled up at the nap of her neck. Perspiration dripped down her chest as the midday sun beat down on her. Today was dedicated to harvesting the wheat. With the wave of her hand, she directed several farmers to the southern portion to begin harvesting. With sickles on their shoulders, they plodded off to the field.

"Mother! Mother!" came a bright voice.

Twilight, grinning, turned to see a young girl sprinting toward her. She extended her tanned arms for the girl.

"Hello, precious," greeted the mother.

"Mother, today is harvesting day! That means tonight starts the festival. Can I go?"

Twilight pulled back a bit from their embrace. She pushed back a lock of rosy hair from the young girl's face.

"I'm not so sure, there will be a lot of people out. I won't be able to watch you the whole time."

The girl dropped her arms from around her mother.

"I'm almost two hundred and twenty years old! I know that I can go to a festival alone."

"Fluttershy, sweetheart, you are not even a thousand years old. I cannot permit you to be alone at night. If you insist on attending, I ask you to take one of the nymphs with you."

Fluttershy heaved a heavy sigh. The nymphs were intolerable. They would follow her everywhere, glued to her side. She would be pulled around by their whims, not able to enjoy the festival. Still, it was better than not going at all.

"Fine."

"Good girl," Twilight patted her daughter's head. "Now, run along, mommy is very busy."

Fluttershy ran through the fields, feeling the wheat flick against her ankles. She picked up her chiton to feel the grasses against her legs. The Earth made her feel so alive, even if she could never experience the sensations alone. Behind her, she could already see a troupe of nymphs catching up with her. When she reached the edge of the field, Fluttershy paused and allowed them to meet her.

"Fluttershy, you should really slow down for us!" chastised Rose, breathing heavily.

"I can hardly breathe!" gasped Lira.

"My chiton is all rumpled now," whined Lily.

Fluttershy tried to conceal her frown. Every so often, there would be a new nymph coming or going. In the end, their names and faces began to blur. Often, the nymphs would stay for a few decades, sheltered by her mother's protection. However, in the end they always left. Nymphs were insatiable and, despite her mother's warnings, would find a mortal or a god to pair with. Once they were found out, they lost the protection of the Earth Goddess. Lira, Lily, and Rose would be no different than the others.

Fluttershy pushed back her long tresses. The sun was oppressively hot today and having her hair down did not help. However, her mother would not hear of her putting it up because Fluttershy was not "old enough".

"Perhaps we should go to the stream and cool down," Lily suggested.

The other women shrugged and danced off towards the edge of the water. Fluttershy followed at her own pace, she no longer felt like running.

Down below, Discord sat on his black marble throne. His finger tapped against the armrest. Today was an extraordinarily slow day. Above the weather was pleasant and the humans were thriving. Other than the regular flow of souls, everything was going as smooth as it could. He waved his fingers in a beckoning motion. A wispy soul, a shadow of former thought, appeared before him.

"Yes, my lord?" a thin voice came from the soul, though there was no mouth to move.

"What is going on in the mortal realm?"

"My lord, the new souls tell me it is the harvest time. The harvest festival will be starting tonight."

Discord rubbed his chin, playing with his goatee. It had been some time since he had visited the mortal realm, possibly too long. Normally he avoided such interactions. The mortals found him...unsettling. Still, if he disguised himself and hid among the crowd, who would be the wiser? He grabbed his long himnation, and pulled the cloak's hood over his head, disguising his sharp ears and stark, white hair. His golden eyes, however, shown brightly under the hood.

The god strode out of his throne room. From the hallway he made his way to the outside of his palace. From above he could survey his kingdom, so generously bestowed upon him by his brothers. To the right was Elysium, the fields for the good-hearted mortals; to the right was the entrance to Tartarus, which was even further below; in the center lay the Fields where the new souls went to wait for judgement or for the right to enter Elysium. The river Styx, which circled the underworld, the Lethe, the Acheron, the Phlegethon, and the Cocytus, home of the wailing souls, lay beyond the lands. Although misunderstood, the kingdom served its purpose. And Discord's purpose was to watch over it. Though, even he had to admit, it would be nice to have someone to rule it with.

With a whistle, he summoned his chariot. It was made of iron (a substance mortals had not yet come to know) forged with dark sapphires. It was pulled by two flaming serpents with glittering eyes. With a tug on the reigns, Discord departed his realm.

Fluttershy, along with the three nymphs, were already in attendance at the festival. The bonfires were already lit brightly and the dancing had begun. Honeyed wine was flowing, for all except Fluttershy, and the tables were full of meats and vegetables. The smell of fresh bread permeated the air. Despite the present company, Fluttershy couldn't help but get swept up in the excitement.

Lira took a long drink from her mug. Rose and Lily were giggling airly, already several mugs in. They were now weaving flowers into their hair, in order to seduce men into dancing with them.

"Rose, you have to do mine next! You are the only one who can work with my short hair," begged Lira.

Lily waved her off.

"No, she's much too busy with my hair. Besides, you can dance now anyways."

"Not without the flowers!" insisted Lira.

Fluttershy, seated beside them on the wooden table, put her face into her hands. Spending the evening with them was painful enough, spending it with them tipsy, was too much.

"I'm going to get some water," shouted Fluttershy to the girls.

Dopily, they waved her off. Fluttershy rolled her eyes, they were too far gone.

Fluttershy folded her arms under her short cloak. It was not necessarily cold, but she felt a chill. As she walked away, she turned just once to look back upon the festival. Shouts of joy could be heard among the crowd and the fires still burned brightly. Looking at it, though, she felt nothing. It felt, silly, all of a sudden.

The sky was clear and lit with stars. One of the old Goddesses, Luna, was still in charge of the starry night. This one was particularly beautiful. Fluttershy wandered out towards the edge of the forest where the stream met the woods. She lay near the clear waters of the stream. In a soft, yet strong, voice she sang:

"Oh this water, clear and long,

Hear me as I sing along,

Diving deep, the fish do swim,

Scales shining, never dim,

Would it be, this fateful day,

My love would come to me, today?"

Suddenly, there was a rustle from behind her. She whipped around and saw the shadow of a tall figure. She scrambled to her feet.

"Who-who are you?" she cried.

"No one of any importance. I, like you, came out here to collect my thoughts."

"O-oh. I'm sorry, you, you scared me."

The shadow chuckled. It was a low voice, one that echoed against the trees.

"Little flower, you shake so."

"I'm not a flower, my name is Fluttershy."

"Very beautiful. Fluttershy."

Fluttershy folded her arms. She would not back away; she did not want to appear afraid. Still, the fact that he had not emerged from the shadows frightened her. Who was he, out here all alone? Her mother would be so furious if she found out that she was talking to a stranger, a man no less.

"Tell me, stranger, what is your name?"

"I have many names."

"Alright. Then, tell me one name."

"I am the Unseen One."

Fluttershy let out a nervous chuckle.

"Is that why I can't see you now?"

He laughed twice. She felt her defenses lower a bit.

"Little flo-Fluttershy-I worry that if you saw me, you would not like what you see."

Fluttershy bit her lip. She still did not dare to glance up.

"You want me to like what I see, then?"

Another deep laugh.

"Yes, Fluttershy, I do."

Suddenly, Fluttershy heard Twilight call her. She muttered something under her breath. Her mother would be furious at her for wandering off. Still, it had been an intriguing evening.

"I have to go…" she trailed off, twisting a bit of hair in her hands, "Will I see you again?"

"If you will allow me, of course."

"Send me a sign, so I will know it's you calling."

"I will leave a pink diamond for you. Always follow the gems and you will find me."

With a wave, Fluttershy departed, running back towards the lights of the festival.

When Fluttershy entered the stone temple, built in her mother's honor years prior, she was met with silence. Fluttershy stepped quietly through, looking around. The temple was lit by several torches. With their light, she could see the bountiful offerings that had piled onto the stone tables around the temple. In the center, as ever, there was a statue of Twilight. Her arm was outstretched, offering a cornucopia of wheat. Her face was serene, yet commanding. Fluttershy sighed. She could never hope to be a goddess of her mother's stature. Before departing, she took one last lingering gaze at her mother's stone face. How proud, it seemed, a pride in her work, perhaps. And what, as her daughter, could she offer?

"Daughter."

The girl stopped suddenly. Her mother was standing in the hall, face partly concealed in a shadow.

"Mother, I had just come in. I was going to my room."

Fluttershy turned her face down. She could not bear to look up at her mother now. The silence grew. Her heart raced. She took a few gulps of air, waiting for a response. Finally, one came.

"I thought you were going to stay with Lily, Rose and Lira."

"Yes…"

"So, it is confusing to me, then, as to why you would wander off?"

Fluttershy kept her head bent. Her rosy hair shielded her tears from her mother. She could not stand when her mother scolded her, as if she were still little more than a child.

"I-I'm...sorry," her voice broke.

"Daughter," the mother's voice was warmer, "I do this to keep you safe. Terrible things could happen."

"I know, I'm sorry."

"Promise me you will not go anywhere without a nymph, or myself."

"But…"

This time, the voice came as a command:

"Promise!"

"Yes, mother."

That night, Discord, King of the Dead, lay awake in bed. He put a hand to his chest; his heart was still racing. He allowed a light smile to play upon his lips. Fluttershy. What a beautiful name! What a beautiful creature! He paused for a moment. It was illogical for him to feel this way. After all, he didn't even know if she was human or nymph. Still, she possessed a certain bewitching guile, something that seemed almost ethereal. She had been so timid with him, yet, was it not brave of her to speak with him at all?

He sighed. She would not dare speak with him once it was revealed who he was. Who on the Earth or in the Heavens would? He was the Lord of the Underworld. He was a shadow on Olympus' grandeur. Yet, despite this, his chest was filled with a flicker of hope. She had agreed to meet him again. He ran a hand through his silvery hair. He would have to prove himself a reliable companion. That would be tricky. Discord sat up and shook his head. He could not be reliable, nor trustworthy, without revealing his true self.

Sighing, he gazed about his chamber. The polished alabaster glowed in the soft candle light. Crafted furniture, a divan here and a chair over there, dotted the room. Jewels and polished stones adored the bedposts. Silk and fine linens made up his bed. Yet, in all the splendor, he felt hollow. He dare not hope that something, someone, could change that.

One day at a time, he promised himself, and went to sleep.

The next morning the harvest continued. As Twilight was the Mother of Bounty, she was naturally out in the fields supervising once more. Fluttershy, as her daughter, was expected to be out as well. Today, only Lira was accompanying her, per her mother's instruction.

"Lady Fluttershy, you have to wait for me!" Lira belted, running up to her.

Her chiton was in slight disarray and several flowers, which she had clearly tried to put into her hair herself, were falling out. Her eyes, though bright, looked slightly wild.

"Sorry, Lira. I'm here."

"Good. You got me yelled at this morning."

Fluttershy felt her neck grow hot. She ducked her head.

"Sorry about that as well."

Lira waved it off.

"Ah, you hear it from Lady Twilight once, you will hear it a million times more."

Fluttershy did not respond. Lira was always like this. Yet, for the first time, she was appreciative of the gesture.

"Shall we see if anyone needs wine or water this afternoon?" suggested Lira.

The other woman nodded.

The afternoon passed slowly. The hot sun crept through the sky slowly, which only increased the need for refreshments more. Fluttershy had to tie her skirts up just to be able to run through the fields comfortably. Lira had done much the same, though she seemed happy to do so. Her smile was bright, infectious even. The younger woman felt a little guilty. Her mind was otherwise preoccupied at the moment.

The shadowed man kept her mind busy. Who was he? It felt exhilarating to speak with him, even for a short time. Her heart panged. Her mother was furious. She would be even angrier to discover that she had been talking to a stranger. She wondered what it would be like the next time they met.

"Ah, no," she muttered.

They would not meet again. They could not. She picked up a pitcher of wine and held it in her slim hands. The jug felt cool against her warm skin. How, then, would another's skin feel upon hers? She blushed. It was time to get back to work.

As the sun started to set, the fields began to clear out. Each man and woman and child was going home to prepare for the celebration. Lira, Rose and Lily had already gone into the temple to get ready. Fluttershy gazed down at her soiled skirts. Her skin was still slick with sweat and her hair was tangled. It might not be the worst idea to bathe.

As Fluttershy entered the temple she found her mother near the shrine, organizing the offerings. Her mother was already dressed for the festival in a deep green chiton with lighter underskirts. Her hair was formally done up and held together by golden chords. On her head she wore her golden headband studded with emeralds.

"Mother, you look lovely," the daughter said.

Twilight turned.

"Ah, Fluttershy. Thank you, dearest. Now, now! Look at you," Twilight tutted, rushing over to her child.

"Yes, I know. I was hoping I could wash off in the river."

Twilight donned a stern look.

"Mm, where are the nymphs? I'm sure one of them could accompany you."

"They are all busy dressing."

"Then, dearest, I supposed I must-"

Just then, a civilian knocked. A man poked his head inside the temple.

"Lady, I apologize to be bothering you, but we need your input for the offerings near the shrine outside."

Twilight nodded: "I will be there in a moment."

She looked down upon her daughter.

"You may go, this once, alone, though it pains me to break my promise to you already."

Fluttershy took a breath inward, attempting to contain her excitement.

"Thank you, mother. I will be safe."

With a nod, the mother departed. Fluttershy let out a little squeal. Her first time alone (permissibly) in...well forever! She had better make the most of it.

Not far from the temple, over the lolling hills that surrounded the back entrance, were several small ponds. All were deep enough to enter, seated, but quite shallow otherwise. Traditionally, there were times in the evenings after harvesting where the nymphs, and Fluttershy, would bathe together. With the festival, everyone seemed to be out of sorts.

The little goddess all but flung off her short chiton. With relish, she slid down into the water, sighing. The cool water replenished her skin. The sun was beginning to sink now. The shade would be welcome after a day of harvesting under the full heat. Perhaps her mother would allow her some of the wine at tonight's festival. She knew it was a vice. It was obvious enough last night. However, for each time that Lyra would giggle inappropriately, or Rose blush, she couldn't help but feel...jealous.

Fluttershy stood up suddenly. The water splashed around her, rippling out towards the edges of the pond. That was ridiculous. She should not be jealous of such a thing. Why, if her mother...She gazed up. The sun was sinking. Surly her mother would be wondering where she was by now.

With a sigh, she donned a cloak, gathering up her soiled clothes into a bundle. She stepped to the short grass and looked out over the hills towards the village. Perhaps she would be visited by the stranger again. She felt a warmth creep up her neck. Truly, the heat of the day had gotten to her.

"Fluttershy!"

And the little goddess departed for the temple to prepare.

The harvest fire blazed in the center of the village. It's heat was welcome as the evening started to cool. The last remaining light of the sunset burned the same intense color. Fluttershy stood in front of it now, for the moment ignoring the dancing and frolicking beside her. When she looked at the flames, how they licked up the offerings, she lost herself. How would it feel to be a fire, to burn endlessly without care? To consume and burn without any thought to who she would tread over. She smiled lightly.

Almost as suddenly, she shook her head. Mother would not approve of such feelings. Goddesses, especially a goddess of the earth, mustn't think so. As the Goddess of Spring, it was her duty to give in abundance. To offer herself and her gifts until all were satisfied. That was why she was here. Sighing, she walked away from the fire and towards her mother.

The Goddess of the Harvest was seated upon a thrown woven of barley and chrysthanthemums. Her indigo hair was woven with the same flowers. A crown of shimmering gold was woven into her braids. Fluttershy gazed up at her mother. Would she ever be given a throne, a crown? Her heart panged. Unlike the Goddess of the Sun, Rainbow Dash, and the other second generation Olympians, she had never been invited to Olympus.

Twilight gazed down at her daughter.

"Hello my little flower, are you enjoying yourself?"

"I suppose."

She watched as her mother's brow knit.

"What is the matter, Fluttershy?"

"Mother, do you think I could also have some wine tonight?"

"Whatever for! You are hardley of age!"

The younger crossed her arms.

"Hardley! I am well over two centuries old!"

"As compared to a millenia! Bear in mind, my daughter, you were welcomed to come here. Do not attempt to push your luck further."

Fluttershy bit her lip. She could feel the tears stinging at her eyes.

"I need a break," she choked out.

She turned on a heel and sprinted back towards the forest. She could hear her mother calling after her, but she did not care. She closed her eyes and felt the wind as she dashed into the safety of the trees.

From the edges of the crowd watched one particular onlooker. Discord watched, from the safety of his cloak, all of the events unfold. When the girl dashed off, his heart went to follow. She looked distressed, hurt, angry. How could he just stand by?

With little regard for reason he followed in her light steps. However, as he reached the treeline, he paused. Perhaps centuries of isolation had not done him well. Surely it was not common courtesy to follow a lone girl into a dark wood. It could be viewed as...rather unsavory at best. He took a deep sigh. Very well, he would leave her the choice.

Discord wandered alone until he found himself on the lip of a small pond. The moonlight flickered gently on the surface of the water. He kneeled near the edge and placed his large palms on the ground. His fingers spread into the grass, feeling every blade as he dug in. Despite the summer air growing cooler, the ground remained warm to the touch. He exhaled and closed his eyes. When he opened them, a trail of jewels, teal sapphires, rose from the earth. He sat back on his heels. It was her choice now.

Fluttershy grabbed a slim tree, hugging herself to the trunk. She gasped for air, trying to catch her breath. She looked behind her. Mother hadn't followed. Her hair was wild. It had long abandoned it's near braid. Her wreath of birch leaves was lost somewhere. Her chiton, once a light green, was flecked with dirt.

It was an immature act, she knew. Running away was an act of a small child. Eventually, she would be forced to leave the safety of the shadows and return to her mother. She would apologize. She always did. Her mother would probably restrict her alone time even more. Great.

Her breathing relaxed. Fluttershy gazed around her. The leaves shadowed her from the full light of the moon. She could make out the individual lines of the trees around her, but no more than that. She rubbed her arms; they were growing goosebumps. Still, the best course of action now was to find a place to rest and gather herself. As she started on her path, a shimmer of light caught her eye. She gasped. Just underfoot was a jewel sparking under the barest light of the moon. He was here.

The goddess grinned to herself. She bit her thumbnail. Should she go? Meeting a stranger in the woods could be perceived as dangerous. Using her fingers, she combed her wavy locks. She shook out her dress. She bit at her lips and pinched her cheeks With a deep breath inward, she went down the sparkling path.

Within minutes, the goddess arrived at a small pond. She paused at the tree line. Glancing around, she saw no other gems. Surely, this was the place. The harvest moon was full in the sky now. The light illuminated the waters of the pond, making it shine. The forest was unusually silent, but it did not unnerve her. She felt unusually calm. Fluttershy took a singular step out of the shadows.

"Is anyone here?"

The wind rustled the leaves around her. She turned as if to go.

"If you would like company, little goddess, I would be only too happy as to oblige."

Her voice caught in her throat. He was here. She clutched at her skirt.

"I don't know who you are."

"Would you like to?"

Fluttershy turned. No one was there.

"Show yourself."

A figure grew before her, revealing a tall male form. His skin was dark and stood in stark contrast to his hair which was stark white. His eyes glowed with a golden fire. Something about that fire intrigued her. Would it burn her? Consume her? Would she enjoy that?

She met his gaze.

"Are you afraid, little gem?"

Fluttershy paused. Her mind was racing. Who was he? Was he a god? Perhaps this had been a bad idea. She was trapped here now, alone, with this person. A man clad all in black from head to toe. A man with large hands and flaming eyes. She looked down.

"I am not certain."

She heard a deep chuckle.

"And yet you followed the gems."

Fluttershy stepped back.

"I was...curious."

"And now, are you still curious?"

She nodded.

"Will you look at me once more?"

She could hear her heart in her ears. If she gave in, what would happen then? She took a step forward. She could but reach out and touch the hem of his cloak. With intention, she slowly turned her eyes upwards. He was smiling softly at her. Her heart thumped rapidly.

"Unseen One, why have you allowed me to see you tonight?" she whispered.

"I wanted you to."

A spark lit up within her. Despite her runaway heart, she pressed on.

"Will you not tell me who you really are?"

"I am the Rich One."

Fluttershy pursed her lips but did not pursue it any further.

She went to the edge of the pond and lay near the edge. Her fingertips traced the ripples.

With a lazy flick of her finger, tendrils of roots appeared. They wove over one another until a single lily pad appeared. She smiled to herself; he was watching.

The other god was indeed watching. He debated momentarily if he would stay behind her, watching her curls trail lazily down her back, or sit beside her. With a swish of his black cloak he kneeled an arms length from her.

The little goddess opened her palm and a small bloom sprouted in it. It was simple, five petals and a round center. She reached out her hand. The dark god took it in his fingertips, spinning it several times.

"Do you enjoy your role here?"

The other sat up and dusted off her chiton.

"Mm, that seems far too personal to reveal. You have not even told me your true name yet."

"If I do...will you run from me?"

The goddess turned on her knees. She was facing him now. Her slim neck dipped as she attempted to meet his downward gaze. Never, not once, in the last millennium had he found himself at a loss for words. Now, what to say? Every vein in his being screamed for him to reveal himself. She was so curious. Perhaps, perhaps she would understand.

"My name is Discord, the King of the Underworld."

He watched in horror, unable to move. Fluttershy stood slowly, picked up her skirts, and disappeared into the forest with a flash. He had meant to reach out, to stop her, but he had not. Discord hung his head. In his palm was the small flower. It was enough. It had to be.

In a burst of smoke, he, too, disappeared from the woods.

Fluttershy reappeared at the edge of the forest in a cloud of petals. She fell to her knees, panting. Her mind was buzzing. She had to go back to the party. She could apologize to her mother later. For now, she needed some time.

With the moon slipping in the sky, the party was beginning to wrap up. Fluttershy sighed and began to clean up. Some of the less tipsy nymphs joined in, gathering up clay jugs and bowls in their slim arms. The younger goddess scanned the crowd for her mother. It seemed like she was gathering up with offerings to organize them at the temple. Offerings were everything to the gods, after all. Without them, they could not hope to persist. But with the mortals blessings and prayers, they could endure forever.

As she was walking towards the temple, Fluttershy spotted a flash of light hair, Rose's. She paused. She watched as the figure darted around the corner and disappeared into the night. Fluttershy bit her lip, but continued inside. Whatever it was, she could discuss it tomorrow. Tonight was not the moment.

Fluttershy dropped off the dishes near the entrance to be washed in the morning. As she had surmised, her mother was gathering the offerings once again. She sighed; better to get it over with.

"Mother."

Twilight turned. Her face was neutral.

"I apologize for running off. It was immature of me. It will not happen again."

Still no reaction. Fluttershy attempted to maintain her composure, but her bottom lip trembled. Finally…

"You are correct. It was very rude of you, Fluttershy. I would expect more from you, especially after I allowed you to attend the festival in the first place."

"Yes, mother."

"So you will understand when I say that your alone time will be greatly restricted from now on."

"But.."

"Hush."

Fluttershy started. She saw her mother's face relax, but she could not. It was unfair. It was incredibly unfair.

"Mother, I apologized. However, I do not think this is fair."

Twilight's eyes grew a dangerously dark shade of indigo.

"You will do as I say."

Fluttershy saw red. She took in a deep breath. She was prepared, for once, to have her voice heard.

"And if I do not?"

That was it. The temple shook on it's foundation. Cracks split the stone beneath them. Twilight shot up in the air, her body surrounded by a haze. It twinkled darkly behind her. Her eyes were white with god-like power. She spread her arms. Vines shot up through the cracks on the ground. Fluttershy was surrounded. Weakly, she spread her arms. The earth would not respond to her. Her hands shook. Petals appeared from them, but this meager offering would do nothing to stop her mother.

"STOP," cried the daughter.

A long second passed. Then, as quickly as it had begun, it stopped. Twilight descended, her feet touching the stones. The stones righted themselves and the vines withered. Her eyes blinked back to their normal violet hue. She walked over to her daughter, who was crumpled to the ground.

"Daughter, there are powers out there that you cannot understand. I am all that separates you from the detestable gods on Olympus...and those minor ones on Earth."

Fluttershy could only mutter in response.

"You are not to leave unaccompanied until I deem otherwise. As your mother, I have a long memory."

The younger did not move from her spot that night. She sat, head hung, too tired to cry anymore.

A few weeks later, the harvest was wrapping up. Fluttershy sat with some of the nymphs around the edge of the field. Lira was playing the lyre and Lily was singing along. Both were rosy cheeked and happy after the frivolity of the festival. There would be more to come in a month or two, once the next harvest was ready. That was the life of the nymph, a coming and going of joy and festivities.

Fluttershy pushed back her bangs, listening quietly to Lira. Once, her mother had thought to teach her the lyre. However, after a few failed attempts, and several strings broken, her mother had grown too frustrated to continue. Twilight had not, however, neglected her daughter's education. Fluttershy had over a century of compositions, oral speeches, numerals and history lessons. In fact, it was in those lessons where she had first heard the name "Discord".

The girl picked at a nail absentmindedly. How long would she have continued to sit with him if he had not revealed his name? She squeezed her palms together. When he spoke, his voice was low and unearthly. His eyes were so distant, almost forlorn. She had seen those eyes in the wolves evicted from their packs. Forever alone, forever crying out for their family.

How would it feel, then, if she were never to see her mother? Part of her would be lost without the elder goddess. She had raised her since the beginning, as the first of the next generation of Olympians. She had sheltered her on the Earth and made it a paradise. She had kept her safe from the feuding and rumored jealousies of Olympus.

Still, some part of her held onto a dark bitterness. Her mother had sheltered her, but perhaps too often. She knew nothing of any life beyond the fields of the Earth. The Olympians likely knew little or nothing of her. She was trapped here, in this role, as a figurehead "goddess" of Spring. A goddess who was known for nothing beyond helping with the harvests and blooming of flowers. Fluttershy's lips turned downward.

Her head snapped back up as the song finished. It was then that Fluttershy noticed Rose. Rose sat with her knees to her chest gazing off toward the village. A light shawl was wrapped around her shoulders. Her hair was not braided or decorated. Odd, for she loved doing her hair. Fluttershy scooted to be beside her.

"Rose, you have been rather quiet, you know."

The nymph, her round face blank, turned to meet her gaze. Her eyes were dull.

"I'm sorry, goddess, but I am not feeling quite myself today."

Fluttershy paused.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes, my lady. I will make sure to sort myself out soon."

"If you say so…"

Under Twilight's care, and with her daughter's aid, the fields ripened once again. The mortals would prepare another feast and partake in some of the bounty. The best, however, was always reserved in the name of the gods. Fluttershy was not permitted to attend for the moment.

Joining her in solitude was Rose. She had been sullen as of late. Her normal cheerful attitude was gone. Today her hair was in a simple braid, nothing more. She was scrubbing down the stone altar and throne with a horsehair brush. Fluttershy was seated at the window, gazing out towards the village. She glanced over her shoulder. Rose seemed to be struggling.

She left her post by the window to join the nymph.

"Do you need my help, Rose?"

The nymph started and the brush clattered to the floor.

"No, my lady." She smiled half heartedly and went to retrieve the brush.

"Rose, you've been...off lately. Please, tell me what is the matter."

The nymph, her rosey eyes somber, shook her head.

"I am sorry, but I cannot tell you."

Fluttershy frowned.

"Because you think I will tell my mother?"

Rose turned away and resumed her work.

The young goddess sighed. It was no use. To her mother, she was too young to understand anything. To everyone else, it must appear the same.

Fluttershy resumed to vigil at the window. She leaned out the window, cheeks pressing against her hands. She had not heard from Discord since their night in the woods. She had reacted poorly then. She had asked for honesty, after all.

Perhaps she, like him, was lonely too. There was no one here she could really speak with. Her mother and she used to share secrets, when she was younger. They were trivial things then: stolen berries, a prank on one of the nymphs...those were passing frivolities. She could not tell her mother that she was bored of this tedious life, a life her mother had chosen for her. She could not reveal that she longed to be an Olympian, like the others. How she selfishly wished for the praise and adoration that came with such a role.

No, some things were better left unsaid.

Down in the Underworld, the days (if you could call them that, for there was no sun beneath the earth) marched on as usual. Removed from the drama and scheming of Olympus, the Underworld, Hades as it was known, proceeded on a set schedule, as always. Long before the fall of Celesita, there had been Titans ruling the underworld. Many were still here, in some form or another, simply existing as they had. The River Styx, for example, had given up her body in exchange for the continued existence as one of the barriers of Hades. Now, it was one of the many borders protecting the living from the dead.

There were reports to be managed, as usual. Each life had its own account. It was up to Discord, and by extension his underlings, to determine the weight and consequences of each mortal's actions. Afterwards, they could be sent to the proper place. Elysium, for those who had lived exceptionally good lives and the Asphodel fields for those who were somewhere in between. Most shades spent centuries in the fields before transfer to Elysium. It was also common for shades to be sentenced to stare into the River Styx for a time. There, they could contemplate their actions until, at last, their soul could find some peace. The spinning wheel of the underworld continued to turn, regardless of the spirit of their leader.

Discord sat in a throne of ebony marble. Long ago he had crafted the throne for himself, back when he was fresh from his triumph with the other Olympians. He rubbed his hand against the smooth grain of the stone, pensive. He had been young, then, and largely untested. In the years before the war he had been imprisoned in the solitude of Tartarus. Now, the matriarch, who had condemned him to such a fate, was there in his place.

However, it would seem that he had traded one prison for another. For now, in the place of the cold stones of Tartarus' depths, he was here. Despite the promises of glory, of freedom, he was confined to the daily workings of the Underworld.

It was not as if Hades was a hostile home. Rather, Discord had been surprised to be welcomed when he had first arrived. The old titaness, Luna, who had reigned over the night was the first to greet him. She, along with her children, had been ruling over Hades in the millennia before even Discord. The god often found himself seeking her counsel when he was weary. As much as it comforted him to speak with her, she remained an enigma. Ever mysterious, filled with riddles, it seemed Luna would never give a straight answer for anything.

As he sat, growling to himself, the titaness appeared beside him. Her figure was always shrouded in a haze, ethereal and ever-changing. Her eyes were dark and limpid and her cloaks were made of the very stars themselves. Despite her ancient age, her face was smooth, as if not a day had passed.

"Discord, Lord of the Shadow, what troubles you so?"

He did not look back at her, but felt her arms encircle his shoulder.

"I suspect you are already aware, my lady."

She laughed darkly.

"You were not so serious once, Discord. Why, I remember your first days were as if they were but yesterday! You were so youthful, joyous even."

He chuckled.

"A handful, I am sure."

"Yes, but are not all the new gods? Speaking of, should not the Millenium Festival be approaching hence?"

Discord nodded and stroked his goatee with a wandering finger.

"I suppose. Will you attend, my lady?"

She floated past him, waving a hand dismissively.

"The folly of such an event is for the youth. No, a titaness should know her place."

She turned, eyes twinkling.

"I believe YOU should go. Why, what is Olympus without one of his glorious warriors?"

"My lady-"

Luna appeared at his side, pushing against his collarbone with one hand. Though she appeared slim, her strength was immense.

"I believe one goddess will miss you greatly if you are absent…"

He gulped.

"Will she be there?"

Luna shrugged.

"Why do you not simply ask?"

Discord stood suddenly. He grabbed his cloak off the back of the throne.

"Mount my steeds," he called to the shades, "I am going to make a call."

On earth, Fluttershy was preparing for the next harvest. A few months had passed and it was about time for the next reaping. Perhaps in another week or so, the crops would be at their peak. Several nymphs had come and gone since then, as they did every harvest. Their lives were briefer than gods, just barley longer than mortals. They were only as lasting as the winds, or the very crops themselves.

Lily had departed to live out the remainder of her life in the temples across the valley. She had taken a different role for her goddess' sake. Despite protests from her fellow nymphs, she went, taking her easy grace with her. Lyra, too, had gone. She was called to follow after a group of musical nymphs, who lived their lives in service to the God of Music, Rainbow Dash. Her playing was solely left just Rose.

Fluttershy had noticed Rose slowly decline as the harvest drew near. Her once rosy cheeks were pale. Despite that, she was gaining weight. Not much, but it seemed steady. Fluttershy had noticed how she took extra care to fold her chiton and cloaks in a very particular fashion. Still, she had said nothing to her mother. If Rose was sick, she would surely tell her mistress.

Recently, Fluttershy had distracted herself with the idea of the Millenium Festival. The new generation of Olympians was to be honored. This time, the twins Rainbow Dash and Applejack were to be named official Olympians. Fluttershy had longed hoped to be named next, but it was not to be. She had worn a smile through all of it. Inside, however, she burned with jealousy. For, it was she, that was the oldest of the generation. It was she that, not long after the Fall of the Titans, graced the world with it's first goddess of the traitors. She pushed away those thoughts. They were unhelpful.

Her mother had no say in whether they would attend this festival. This one, thankfully, was mandatory for all named gods and their offspring. Likely because it was Shining Armor himself who was swearing in the twins. He seemed to take a father-like pride in naming gods into his court. Fluttershy had not interacted with him in centuries, but she remembered the last festival. Shining Armor was boisterous, to say the least.

Most exciting, it was a time for her to finally wear a new dress. It was the color of sunshine, demure, yet decorated with the very light itself. Her sleeves were decorated with pomelia. Each petal was perfectly preserved by her powers. Her skirts faded into a gentle pink, as though she were the sunrise of the morning. Her hair would be braided with ribbons and, with her mothers permission, half up for the occasion. She would don no tiara, no mark of her bearing as the child of an Olympian, but for now, it was enough.

Twilight entered her daughter's room to find her, with Rose, reading her outfit for the festival.

"My little flower, are you ready for tomorrow?"

Fluttershy turned and nodded. She saw her mother's face entertain a small smile.

"I will take care of the harvest preparations before we go."

"Thank you, mother."

"In return, please stay in the room until I fetch you."

"Why is that?"

Twilight sighed.

"I want to make sure I can escort you myself to Olympus. You have no chariot of your own, my flower. You do not possess the rank or magic to get there yourself."

Fluttershy twisted a curl in her fingertips.

"Well...are you sure I cannot learn?"

Twilight threw her hands up, the sleeves of her dress billowing out.

"My love, again? You are not ready."

She nodded slowly.

"It's just, the others of the new generation already know these things. They are receiving titles and…"

Twilight placed her hands on her daughter's shoulders. Her eyes were soft but her tone was unyielding.

"Daughter, the Olympians only ever think of their titles. They only plan for the next party, the next festival...We are different. You and I are of the earth. You are my heir to everything that we have built here. As the crops grow, we oversee the next generation of mortals. While the gods rely on the mortals for offerings, using their petty schemes and empty promises, we offer something substantial. Without us, the earth cannot fruit.

Whatever titles Olympus offers are empty compared to the promise of our magic. I have trained you to do all that I am able on this earth. Be grateful for your place here."

Fluttershy nodded. Her mother placed a finger under her chin, lifting up her face to meet her own.

"My flower, you are my most precious gift. You have a gift that these mortals need in order to live. No title can compare."

"Yes, mother. I understand. I do."

"Now, sleep well. I will come for you in the morning."

Fluttershy bid her mother, and Rose, good night. However, she could not bring herself to sleep. She took up residence, once again, at the window. As she sat, dreaming of the festival, her eye caught the faint glimmer outside the window. She stood and gazed out. It was a pink diamond. Her breath caught in her throat. It was him. Even knowing the Lord of the Underworld was waiting for her, she felt her heart race. She still wanted to see him.

With a smile, she leapt out the window and raced down the path of jewels. He was waiting, after all.

The path wound down the hills towards the edge of a cliff. She stood near the edge and heard the ocean's waves crashing beneath. The moon was high in the sky, bathing her skin in a soft light. She turned and saw him removing his cloak of invisibility. She smiled softly. His hair was stark white in the darkness and his eyes still glinted gold.

"I thought I might find you here," she mused.

He chuckled.

"I wanted to see you. I had to apologize," she continued.

He stepped towards her, she saw his arm stretch towards her face. She closed her eyes and felt his finger tips, cold to the touch, caress her cheek. She sighed.

"It is regrettable...but understandable. Not many gods look upon my role favorably."

She placed a hand on his.

"You have an important role. You...are one of the three."

He dropped his hand from her cheek and shook his head.

"That is kind of you. Unfortunately, with this role comes and understandable fear. The mortals are afraid of Hades, of the underworld. By extension, they fear me, the king of such a place."

Fluttershy turned and faced the coast line. She felt the cool breeze of the wind upon her shoulders.

"I can understand, I suppose."

"You are a young, beautiful goddess of the earth. You are beloved by all the mortals."

The young goddess strugged. She heard a wave crash against the stones.

"No, they love my mother. I am but a replacement for someone who is ageless. I am an heir to an immortal. No real role and no real title."

She felt Discord beside her. He, too, stared off into the horizon.

"Is that what you desire?"

Fluttershy shook her head.

"I...I have said too much. It is not my place to desire such things."

There was a pregnant silence.

"My purpose tonight was to ask if you were attending the Millennium Festival tomorrow."

"Yes, I will be there."

Discord felt his chest swell. He continued to fix his gaze out to the horizon. He could not trust himself to look at her.

"I look forward to it, then. Normally, Olympus is...rather dull."

Fluttershy felt his cloak tickle her arm. He was close.

"I am surprised. Is it not supposed to be idyllic?"

"Mm, perhaps if you are Shining Armor. No, little goddess, a dull god like me can find no such comforts in that place."

She turned to him and pushed back her hair. Her eyes sparkled.

"Perhaps, tomorrow, that would change?"

He paused and took her in. She was glowing under the light of the moon. Her skin was luminescent. Her eyes shone like sapphires. Her simple shift blew gently over her, revealing a small form.

"Yes, I do suspect it will change tomorrow."

She blushed and turned back towards the hills.

"I must go for now. My mother will notice I am gone."

Discord stopped himself from reaching for her.

"Until tomorrow."

She turned, waved, and disappeared with a flurry of petals behind her.

The morning of the Millennium Festival arrived. Fluttershy woke with the dawn and dressed herself, even before Rose had the chance to come and aid the process. Both women worked on her hair, interactly braiding half of the hair up into a tight coil, but leaving the rest to trail down in delicate curls along her shoulders. Fluttershy felt her sleeves fall lightly around her arms. She had goosebumps just thinking about the day.

When her mother came to fetch her, Fluttershy waved goodbye to Rose and departed, hardly able to maintain her composure. Outside, Twilight had her eyes focused on the heavens.

"Are you ready, my flower?"

"Yes, mother."

Fluttershy grabbed her mother's arm, ready to ascend at light speed towards the heavens. Instead, her mother looked down upon her with hard eyes.

"Promise me you will be safe."

"I promise."

"Stay away from the male gods."
"I will."

And they departed for Olympus.

Fluttershy stepped from her mother's chariot, gazing at the cloud covered paradise before her. Splendor was describing it mildly. The rays of the sun blazed all around the columns made of the very clouds themselves. Peacocks, some shrieking widely, meandered about. Roses, carefully tended, grew around every other column. Gentle fountains burbled in each corner. It seemed an endless expanse of hallways and open rooms. Around her gods and goddesses milled about, most with glasses of ambrosia in hand. Fluttershy felt her chest bubble up with excitement. She exhaled and tried to maintain her composure; she should seem as though she belonged here.

She could feel her mother's eyes on her back as she wandered through the crowd. Part of her longed to find where the ambrosia was being served, the other part wondered where Discord could be. He did not seem the type to enjoy crowds. Fluttershy stood amongst the crowd, gazing around for any friendly face. Perhaps she should have stayed with her mother after all. Her heart sank.

Suddenly, a tall woman appeared beside her. Fluttershy turned to see a goddess, scantily dressed in a revealing chiton braided with golden ropes, grinning beside her. The goddess had long indigo locks left in big curls down her small shoulders and thin back. Golden bracelets tinkled on her wrists and ankles. Her eyes glimmered like gems.

"Ah, hello," Fluttershy greeted, feeling her face heat up.

The goddess maintained an almost predatory grin.

"So, you have returned to Olympus at last young goddess."

Fluttershy nodded.

"Yes, I am afraid my duties on Earth often keep me occupied."

The goddess pouted, her tinted lips full and tugging on a false frown.

"Mm, that is too bad. For I long to have you younger goddesses around."

Fluttershy tipped her head.

"Why is that?"

"My dear, as the Goddess of Love, it is my job to invest myself in the interests of the younger generation. My very livelihood depends on aiding your future endeavors."

"Rarity, that is incredibly kind of you, but I am afraid that just cannot be."

The love goddess batted her long eyelashes, forcing another pout.

"Why is that, love?"

"As I said, I have my duties on Earth. I am afraid they do not permit me to venture out often."

Rarity played with a filed nail, nodded slowly. She shook out her curls.

"Hmm, darling you are too cute. You mean your mother does not permit you such things."

Fluttershy glanced away.

"Even so, you are such a lovely little treat."

"Thank you?"

"It would be a shame to let this all go to waste."

Fluttershy hung her head. She was too humiliated to continue.

"I am sorry. You are too kind, but I really must go."

Rarity grabbed at her arm as she turned away.

"My dear, surely -"

Just then, Flutttershy turned and found the Lord of the Underworld at her side. He was holding Rarity's arm. His face was blank, but the aurora around him was pure menace.

"Discord!" the younger gasped.

He released the goddess' arm and turned to Fluttershy.

Rarity was not the least bit deterred by this turn of events. She clapped her hands girlishly.

"Well, my my, the heroic Lord of the Dead come to save the damsel in distress. Tell me my dear, is this why you do not need my help? You have already found one."

She tittered at her own humor.

Fluttershy buried her expression with her bangs and backed away. Rarity was still grinning to herself. Discord remained rooted to his position as he watched the younger goddess depart.

Fluttershy wandered down the halls, now overwhelmed by the smell of sickly sweet roses. She did not care to retract her steps and find her way back into the crowd. Not after being humiliated like that. What would the other gods think? What would her mother think? She burned at the thought.

As sweet as it had been for Discord to step in, it now meant that the loudest gossip in Olympus now knew something juicy. Imagine the tales of the sweet innocent minor goddess from the Earth trapped by the haunting Lord of the Dead. Humiliating. If her mother heard, well, she might not even see the outdoors ever again. She folded her arms over her small chest, feeling what little warmth they could provide. Olympus was unusually chilly.

She sighed and sat on the edge of some potted roses, careful not to let them prick her. She stared softly at the fountain a few feet before her. Perhaps it had been silly to let Rarity get under her skin. Yet she still felt annoyed. Discord had only spoken to her a handful of times. If he did not like her, and there was a good chance he was not interested, now he surely would not be. All thanks to Rarity's nosy ways. She glanced behind and saw that the roses had wilted around her. She could care less.

A shadow appeared behind her. She did not move nor look behind. It could only be one person.

"Discord, I...I am sorry for what she said. I am still...processing my emotions."

"What do you mean?" said a soft voice.

"Oh, I am sure I will be right in a moment. I just let my feelings run away with me...as usual."

"You know, it is justified to feel angry."

"No, I do not get angry."

"I am sorry that I intervened. I did not think it through."

"No, I appreciate the thought."

The water in the fountain trickled gently. Fluttershy placed her cheeks in her hands and maintained her gaze forward.

"You look lovely today."

Fluttershy pricked up at that.

"You really think so?"

"Yes."

"You know, it seems silly, but...I was worried you would not come after me."

"Why is that?"

"Well, to be honest, I am not sure why you would want to be with me. I am no one in this crowd. It is understandable why someone with your standing would not want to associate with me."

She felt a strong hand on her shoulder. At this she turned to face him. She took him in. His dark chiton was accented by a deep blue cloak. His white hair had been pushed back for his onyx crown. He looked strong, regal.

He bent down to meet her gaze.

"To be honest with you, I am longing for a chance to get to know you. You, the goddess who speaks to me as an equal. Who does not hide from my shadows. I want to know you, regardless of how you perceive your station. That is, if you will allow me that chance."

Fluttershy placed a gentle hand on her chest. Her heart was beating wildly. He was interested in her. She could not deny she would like to know this god more. What would it be like to drown in his golden eyes?

As she deigned to respond, her mother rounded a corner. The young goddess frowned and backed away from the other. Discord took a step back as well and receded into the shadows. Fluttershy blinked. He had disappeared into the shade of the hall.

"Fluttershy! There you are. I was worried sick when we were separated."

The daughter shrugged and looked away.

"We should be off soon, my love, I just have a few more matters to take care of while we are here."

The young goddess frowned.

"So soon?" she muttered.

Twilight gazed down at her daughter.

"Of course. We should not stay among these ruffians if we can so help it."

Flutttershy gazed up pleadingly.

"Can I just...stay here a moment longer? I just need to collect my thoughts. This day has been a lot for me to take in all at once. I will meet you at the chariot."

Twilight gazed around, her eyes sharp. When she did not find anything, she relented.

"Very well. But please be quick. We have several matters to take care of at home as well."

When her mother hadd, finally departed, Fluttershy turned to see Discord stepping out of the shadows. She frowned.

"I suppose this is goodbye again."

The man stood before her. He nodded slowly.

"Will I see you soon?" she asked, her eyes searching for his.

He met them.

"Yes, at any moment."

"How will I call you?"

Discord pursed his lips as though he were deep in thought. Then, he snapped his fingers. As he did so, a golden necklace appeared in his large palm. It was a dainty chain with a gold setting. Upon the setting were several pink gems, each a sparkling part of a butterfly wing. Fluttershy gasped. She had never seen something so lovely.

"If you wear this, and think of me, I will sense it. Then, I will come."

Fluttershy nodded eagerly.

"Before you accept it, my little gem, you should know…"

Fluttershy turned as he started. Her mother was calling. She rolled her eyes.

"I...I have to go. I accept the necklace, that is, if it is okay with you."

Discord nodded and proffered his palm. Fluttershy, in a great hurry, snatched the delicate thing and disappeared back into the party.

Still at the fountain, the male god sighed. He would have to find a moment to tell her later. At any rate, she was gone now. He felt his heart flutter in his chest. Perhaps it was possible that she returned his budding affections. He shook his head; no, it was better not to hope too much. Besides, it was time to return to the Underworld.

The next days passed in a blur. Fluttershy, with Rose by her side, were in charge of organizing the disciples at the temple. Some were swearing in, ready to devote their lives in service to the temple; others were here only for a short time. Many newcomers needed a place to stay before building a home or marrying into another. The temple was always a safe haven for the mortals of the Earth.

Since the party, Fluttershy had not given much thought to putting on the necklace. In truth, she was worried her mother would see it and take it from her. Such jewels were considered vain, especially when working among the poor and suffering that sometimes took up refuge in the temple. Still, Fluttershy warmed at the thought of the god. He was surprising to say the least. He seemed so shy for one so powerful. She bit her lip. Perhaps, as a shy goddess herself, she should not think such of him.

When they had finished their duties for the day, Fluttershy took Rose to the springs to bathe. As Fluttershy washed, she noticed Rose near the edge, still dressed.

"Are you alright? You need not fear my gaze."

Rose shook her head. She dipped her toes in the pond.

Fluttershy swam over to Rose, folding her arms on the edge of the grass. Her hair snaked behind her in the water. She gazed up at Rose. Her face had become paler recently. She had been sick each morning, though she tried to hide it.

"Rose, I know you do not wish to tell me what is wrong, but I just want you to know, I worry for you."

The nymph smiled down, her cheeks gaining some rare color.

"I appreciate it, I do. It is not as though I do not trust or respect your word...but I am afraid that once my secret is revealed that I will no longer be allowed to stay here, with you."

Fluttershy raised an eyebrow. She wanted to press the nymph, but relented. It was her secret to keep. And after all, who better than she to understand the importance of a secret?

The matter dropped for a time and the daily slough of chores continued. About two weeks later, Fluttershy was sent out with Rose to inspect the borders of the temple. Typically, there was not much to be seen. Beyond the protected lands of the temple were wild landscapes. Many humans chose to live outside of the direct protection of the Earth goddess, as her bounty extended to all the lands, so typically the border was calm and peaceful. At times, there could be trouble with humans sneaking onto the protected fields to steal wheat or goods meant as offerings. However, that was rare. In essence, the chore was a waste of time, meant to send Fluttershy away for a moment while Twilight attended to the more important duties.

Rose kept several paces behind. As they approached the border, her breathing grew heavier. Fluttershy paused, and turned.

"Rose, are you alright?"

She nodded, but did not have the words to respond.

"I will run ahead and check the border, then I will come back. You should rest here."

Rose attempted to protest, but Fluttershy ignored her and sprinted ahead. The stalks of wheat flicked at her ankles as she raised her skirts and scampered off. It was a marvelous day, sunny and clear skies. Fluttershy grinned and continued. Suddenly, the sky before her grew dark. Instantly, a figure appeared before her. The goddess tipped backwards and fell into the field. She gazed up. It was a god.

"Greetings, pretty little goddess."

Fluttershy felt her breath catch in her throat. It was Zephyr, the God of War. What was he doing here? To the best of her knowledge, there was no battle nearby. More than that, Twilight had banned the god from the protected lands long ago.

"Zephyr, what...what are you doing here?"

His grin was wicked. His armor sparkled menacingly in the light of the morning. His handsome face, littered with scares, did little to conceal the fire in his amber eyes.

"I saw you at the party. You are a cute little thing."

Fluttershy felt her heart beating in her ears. He was approaching her; she should move. Yes, she could get up and sprint. Her legs felt locked in place. She shuddered.

"Zephyr, please, back away. You are frightening me," she whispered.

He did not stop.

"I am going to take you to my temple. You can live there, with the others."

Fluttershy squeaked.

"The-the others?"

"Why, of course. A god must have a harem of women to support him."

Fluttershy shook her head, but could not respond further. She needed help. Someone had to help her. Her mother was back at the temple, Rose in the fields...Fluttershy gripped at a folded pocket in her dress. It was still there.

"Come now, princess, get up. We are going to go."

Fluttershy yelped as he grabbed her arm, yanking her to her feet. She fumbled for the necklace in her dress fold. She clutched it in her hand, praying that Discord could hear her.

Zephyr threw her over his shoulder and made to depart. Fluttershy, still gripping the necklace, screamed:

"Discord, help me!"

Zephyr paused, snickering.

"Whom did you call, princess? The God of the Underworld? Why -"

The ground split with a deafening crack. The sky fell dark with shadows. A dark fire appeared in a ring around the gods. Fluttershy writhed on Zephyr's shoulder, attempting to get down. The god held fast to her waist.

Discord appeared before them, his eyes blazing. His black cloak billowed out around him, flickering in the light of the fire. His face was stone.

"Put her down. Immediately."

Zephyr dropped the goddess unceremoniously. Fluttershy fell gracelessly upon the rocky field below, her arm catching under her weight. She cried out. As she did so, the flames around them burned brightly. Discord approached the other god slowly, each step purposeful. The onyx crown at his temple highlighted his sharp jaw and hard eyes.

"The next time I lay eyes on you, oh God of War, you will face my full fury. Gods be damned. I will raise the souls of the dead. They will follow you endlessly. Ever battlefield, every marriage bed, there they will be, clawing and moaning and cursing you. Oh son of the gods, I curse you."

Zephyr attempted to sputter something. His eyes widely searched for a way out. As Discord's hand reached for his neck, he sprinted out and disappeared.

The flames died and the skies cleared. Discord ran to the goddess' side, gathering her body in his arms.

"Fluttershy? Can you hear me?"

She coughed, lungs full of smoke, and nodded slowly.

Discord placed his large hand against her cheek.

"I will get you care, I promise. Where are you hurting?"

Fluttershy felt tears slip down her cheeks. She could do nothing to stop them.

"I-my arm. I cannot feel…"

Discord nodded slowly. He cradled her in his arms, standing slowly.

"I will help you, sweet little goddess. Bear with the pain for now, it will be over soon."

Fluttershy felt her consciousness slipping away. She felt the blanket of sleep folding over her, and gave in.

When she awoke, Fluttershy felt groggy. She blinked several times and looked about her. It was a spacious room, mostly dark in decor. She felt a silken sheet under her. Groaning, she sat up slowly. Suddenly, she remembered. Zephyr. Her arm. Fluttershy glanced down.

Her arm was perfectly straight and not a scratch or scar to be found. She risked flexing her fingers. They wiggled painlessly. She could hardly believe her eyes. Just then, a knock sounded upon the door. She bid the entity entry.

Discord entered slowly, as if he were afraid to do so. Fluttershy blushed fiercely. He was as handsome as ever. In his dark cloak he cut a striking figure. The scars upon his arms and legs did little to diminish that. He sat on the divan across from her bed. Fluttershy picked at a nail thoughtlessly. In her heart, she wished he would sit beside her on the bed. Perhaps that would be overly forward.

"How are you feeling, goddess?"

Fluttershy nodded.

"Great, thanks to you."

She dared to look into his amber eyes. She felt as though the fire within them would consume her.

"I...you may address me by Fluttershy, you know."

She saw him bite his lip briefly.

"Very well."

"I...am I in your realm?"
Discord nodded.

"I brought you here to heal. Of course, whenever you are feeling up to it, I can deliver you back to the temple."

Fluttershy paused. Her mother would be worried, no doubt. Once she left the underworld, her mother would also no doubt be furious with her. That could, perhaps, wait an hour or two.

"If you do not mind, I would like to see more of your realm."

Discord met her gaze and she allowed herself a small smile. He approached her bed and took her hands, lifting her slowly off the bed.

"Of course, little gem. I would love nothing more. However, your dress is stained from the dirt and grass. Would you prefer if I sent you something to change into?"

Fluttershy glanced down. He was correct; she appeared a mess.

"If you would not mind, that sounds lovely."

He dared to kiss her hand. A shock coursed through her body.

"I will send you something immediately. Until then, feel free to wash up with the basin."

Fluttershy waited until he was out of the room. She found the basin, which was made of ebony inlaid with jewels and poured the pitcher water in. As the cool water splashed her face, she promised she would let her worries wash away, even for a moment. Surely she would forget, momentarily, about Zephyr and about her mother. Her responsibilities could wait one moment longer. An hour or two to herself could not hurt.

A knock broke her concentration of the rippling water. She looked up and found a stack of silks on the opposite side of the door. She went over to the stack and felt the lush silks in her hands. Silk was a luxury not often seen near the temple. Even her own festival dresses had not been so fine. She slipped on the silk and felt it's cool touch against her skin. It was a loose chiton with a rippling black skirt with silver pins. She pulled her hair into a tail and tied it off with a bit of silk left for her near the basin. Before she departed, she glanced at herself in the mirror. Her mother would say vanity is a trait of the Olympians; earth goddess were not to succumb to such meaningless pleasures. However, as she looked at her face in the mirror, she let herself appreciate the view for just one moment.

Another knock sounded upon the door. Fluttershy went to it, her sandaled feet gently gracing the marble floors. She opened the door and found that Discord had returned. He, too, had cleaned up. His silver hair was pulled back into a small tail and his beard was neatly trimmed. He wore a crown of black thorns.

"I believe I am ready," she smiled.

"You are a vision," he responded without missing a beat.

Fluttershy felt her heart skip in her chest. He was incredibly forward. She should really reject his advances, but somehow she could not bring herself to do so.

He offered her his arm and she accepted. She had to raise her arm slightly to link to his, as he was almost double her height. Fluttershy frowned. Her body had stopped ageing hundreds of years ago; she was doomed to appear as nothing more than a child. She bit her lip as they continued down the winding halls. Hopefully he did not think of her as such, as a child.

Fluttershy stared out of the alcoves of the halls, each decorated with images from the Great War, studded with jewels. She took stock of the Olympians, shining in their radiant splendor. Then, as they continued, she saw an image she was not familiar with. It was a mosaic of pink and yellow, all crafted to look like butterflies in flight. In the next spot, there was a butterfly flying amongst thorns. In the next, black butterflies, shimmering in the low light, swept from the alcove to the ceiling.

Discord turned and led her out into an open garden. She noticed that the Underworld lacked natural light, but yet she could see perfectly fine. The garden was mostly empty, but pillars dotted the ground here and there. Fluttershy stopped along the path and briefly took her arm back from the god. She stretched out both of her hands, attempting to think of lush grasses. She closed her eyes, feeling her very being tremble. She opened her eyes - nothing. She turned to the other god, pouting.

"What is wrong with my powers?"

"Nothing whatsoever. This is the Underworld, the world of the Dead and those who have Passed. Therefore, there is no natural life here."

Fluttershy allowed herself a moment to gather herself. How horrid to never feel the grass against heels, the dirt against her feet. What would she do without the cycles of the harvests? Where would she romp if not in the fields of flowers? She shook her head; Discord's realm had little to do with her.

"So, what were you going to show me?" she asked, looping her arm with his once more.

He pointed just past the garden. Fluttershy squinted; she could see a sea of black. The sea was moving rather quickly. She trotted ahead, dragging the other god with her. As she came closer, she realized that it was no sea at all, but a flock. It was a flock of all black sheep. She squealed.

"They are precious!"

Discord chuckled, "I thought you might enjoy them."

"What are they doing here, in Hades?"

"The mortals only offer me black animals, like these sheep as sacrifices. Few temples on earth exist for my sake. However, I must admit that I enjoy these sweet animals."

Fluttershy nodded; they were indeed sweet. She spotted a smaller sheep, barely more than a lamb, bleating at the others. She giggled. She glanced up at Discord.

"What else can I see?"

He held her gaze momentarily and glanced away.

"Ah, well...I do not wish to take you out to the rivers your first time here. It might be frightening, at first, to see all the new souls. If you would like, we can visit the dining hall and have a bite to eat?"

Fluttershy felt her stomach growl. She conceded and let him lead her back inside. The wound back down the halls until they entered the dining room. There was a low table of polished wood. The table was full of stuffed olives, breads, and meats. Discord sat at the head of the table and motioned for her to sit beside him. She blushed and did so. From where she sat, reclined on several cushions, her arm could all but brush his.

Discord offered her olives and some bread, which she ate gratefully, savoring them. It had been awhile since she had sat down to relax and enjoy a meal. Normally, she would eat something quickly at midday in the fields. She felt like...royalty.

Discord passed her a bowl of lamb. She shook her head.

"I do not wish to seem rude, but I do not eat meat."

The god nodded and snapped his fingers. Immediately, beings appeared behind him. Fluttershy gasped. She could see a humanoid form, but they were completely transparent. Were they dead? She focused her attention, instead, on the hem of her dress.

"Bring whatever we have stored from Earth. Any vegetables or fruits."

Another snap of his fingers and the apparitions were gone.

Fluttershy motioned towards where they had been.

"Oh, those are shades. They are spirits who have passed on. Some stay here, with me, as attendants. You need not fear. They cannot hurt you."

A moment later the shades returned with a small amount of zucchini, herbs, and tomatoes, carefully arranged on a plate. She smiled.

"Thank you."

"Of course, my sweet."

She stole a glance at him. He was blushing. My sweet, was it? She could hear her heart in her ears.

When they had eaten their fill, the table was cleared and a red wine brought out. Discord poured an ample glass for Fluttershy. She took the cup from him, grazing his fingers on the cup as she did so. She took a hesitant sip and was pleased to find it a sweet red, not too heady.

"This is lovely, thank you. You know, my mother does not often allow me wine, even at festivities. However, this one is quite pleasing."

Discord raised a thick eyebrow at her.

"Oh, it is not important. My mother is simply...protective of me."
"I see."

She nodded slowly and sipped at her wine. Perhaps she had shared too much, but he was easy to talk with.

"I suppose...that she does not allow you suitors?"

Fluttershy nearly spit out the wine. She set the chalice on the table.

"No...not really. I am quite busy in the fields most days. Besides, even if I was allowed, I really do not know anyone who would want to call."

She felt his hand graze her arm. She shuddered, but did not look up. Fluttershy could see him through her lashes, moving somewhat closer.

"Would you...consider it if someone were to ask?"

She nodded.

"I-If the right person...perhaps…"

He took her hand in his and kissed it firmly. She felt her body quiver with delight.

"Fluttershy, would you consider me?"

She felt as though she would faint.

"I...perhaps...yes."

He drew close to her. She could feel his breath against her cheek. Perhaps he would kiss her now; perhaps she would like that. Disappointingly, he pulled back.

"I should bring you home, before your mother worries."

She nodded, but desperately wished she could go anywhere but home.

"Yes, let us return."

They took his chariot back, pulled by two black beasts made of the very shadows themselves. Fluttershy held fast to the god as they sped up from the underworld towards the surface. She closed her eyes and, when she had opened them, they were back on Earth.

"Thank you, for everything."

Discord nodded.

"I-Will I see you again?" she asked, blue eyes shining.

He nodded again.

"Hold fast to the necklace I gave you. I will always find you."

Fluttershy, knowing that it was long past time, bid him goodbye and started off for the temple. When she arrived, she found her mother, as well as Rose at the entrance. Before she could even begin an explanation, her mother grabbed her, shaking her by the shoulders.

"Where were you? We-we were so worried."

"Mother, I -"

"Hush. Fluttershy, how could you run off like that, again? I had all of the nymphs stop in the fields to look for you. We are almost a full day behind."

Fluttershy sighed and remained as she was. She dared not look her mother in the eye. In truth, it mattered very little how she responded. Her mother only ever heard what she wanted. What was the point, then, in arguing?

"Daughter, tell me what happened."

Fluttershy did not respond and held her gaze upon the stone floor. She felt the pressure on her shoulders grow, but she simply shook her head. She could feel the tears stinging her eyes.

"Fluttershy, as your mother and as one of the twelve, I command you to tell me."

The daughter found her mother's intense violet eyes burning through her.

"Zephyr, the God of War, attempted to kidnap me when Rose and I were sent to check the border. I was rescued by Discord, the God of the Underworld. It was he who took care of me and returned me home."

There was a pregnant silence. The mother released her grip on the daughter and stepped backward, as if in disbelief. Her head swung around and found the nymph, Rose.

"And you? Where were you in all of this?"

"Mistress, I went with her to the border, but I could not keep up. She ran ahead, but only for a moment. I did not see more than that."

There was a snort of disgust from the Goddess of the Harvest.

"Could not keep up, hm? I suppose being that far along in a pregnancy will do that to you."

"How -?"
"Silence!"

The stone temple quaked beneath the might of the goddess. Her eyes were aflame, her fists clenched in terse anger. Fluttershy took a step backward, as did Rose.

"You think me foolish, nymph? And after I provided you with food and shelter. Well, no longer. You are banished from this temple."

Rose, tears in her eyes, bowed and ran from the temple. Fluttershy reached for her, but her arm was snatched by the goddess.

"You and I are leaving."

Twilight pulled her daughter's arm and led her out of the temple. Her strides were long and determined. Her face was fixed on the horizon.

"Leaving?" gasped the daughter, stumbling behind.

"Where no god will ever touch you, hurt you, again!"

"Wh-but mother!"

Twilight would hear none of it. Fluttershy felt her protests die upon the breeze. The Goddess of Bounty raised a powerful arm towards the horizon, intending to warp them far away. And with a rush of summer wind, the pair were gone, disappeared in the ether.
