Chapter 1
Private Ross Higgins clutched his rosary in one hand and springield 1903 in the other. He was on a transport truck with a dozen other men in his unit being transported to the compound. The soldier next to him noticed the rosary and grabbed Ross's shoulder.
"Its alright!" He shouted over the roar of the truck. "They don't even have guns. All we have to do is get them to turn over the hostages and then it's over."
Two days ago, police officers went to investigate the compound over claims that kidnappings were being committed in order to perform satanic rituals. The officers were invited into the compound and then surrounded. It was not completely known if the police had been taken alive or had they all been killed. However, with such a dangerous situation the governor called upon the National Guard to intimidate the occultists into surrendering.
The truck pulled up alongside two others and Ross said a quick prayer before dismounting with the other men. They could see one house inside a large iron gate along with a barbed wire fence surrounding the area. There were five houses with four on each side of the compound and the fifth in the middle believed to be where the rituals were performed.
The men lined up a distance away from the gate covered on the right side with a mounted maxim gun and on the left with an armored car also brandishing a machine gun. When everyone was in place the Sargent moved to the front with a megaphone and brought it up to his lips shouting at the top of his lungs.
"We have you all surrounded! I'm giving you five minutes to come out of there or I'm going to drive my Rolls-Royse right through that gate and gun you all down!"
For a couple minutes nothing happened then something like a purplish light glowed from behind the house. Then the house and the gate were swallowed up by what looked like a dark hole.
Men began to panic but the sergeant quickly had them back in formation and orderly again as it became clear that the darkness would not spread further.
Suddenly a man emerged from the darkness in a full amour suit and brandishing a sword. More men in the same attire followed, dozens, and then around a hundred and more kept coming. They were about 20 yards away coming closer and closer. The sergeant yelled at them to stop but they did not respond. He then ordered his men to point their guns and then yelled one last warning which was not heeded.
"FIRE!" Ordered the Sergeant.
They did so and men in the amour ran toward them with swords in the air in response. Many of the medieval men fell but they were not deterred. Just as it appeared, they would slam into the soldiers machine gun fire opened up from the left and right. The attackers were mowed down and they finally retreated back into the hole. There was a mess of blood, amour, and swords on the ground as the wounded wraithed in pain.
The soldiers stood in shock a moment before being told to reload. Suddenly black objects came flying out of the hole and fell on the soldier's position. Three laid on the ground yelling for help. Ross took a closer look at one of the objects sticking out of the ground. Arrows like the ones Indians used. Then a beam of light came out of the void slamming into the armored car causing it to explode, then another into the machine gun causing it and those around it to disintegrate.
The men began to panic. The sergeant tried to once again rally the soldiers but was stuck and fell with a spear in his back. The soldiers looked to see men on horseback charging toward them. Some men fired in an unorganized fashion causing no more than a few of the cavalry to fall. The surviving soldiers turned and ran back toward the trucks being cut down with swords and spears of the horsemen. Some men got into the trucks and attempted to start them, but the horsemen smashed the windows and killed anyone inside.
Melees broke between soldiers and swordsmen. With no bayonets the soldiers either fired at point blank range or used their rifles as clubs. Ross turned to see a soldier on the ground with a swordsman over him and quickly shot him right through the breastplate, but he was quickly pushed to the ground with the side of a spear. His attacker pointed the spear at him, and Ross curled up clutching his crucifix. A blueish glow surrounded Ross and as the spearman was about to run him through the blue light went up the spear and into the attacker and he fell dead. Those nearby fled in terror. Ross immediately got up and ran away.
