Professor McGee

Chapter 1: Prologue

From Judgment Day, Part 2, Season 5, Episode 19, US AIRDATE: May 20, 2008

Takes place in the Director's office after Director Shepard's funeral service.

Newly Appointed Director Leon Vance:

"McGee, I'm moving you across to the Cyber Crimes Unit. You'll be working with Officer Hollsworth, starting tomorrow…"

"Agent Gibbs, meet your new team..."

And then…

Still in shock, Tim walked down the stairs with his teammates, his former teammates. As he'd turned to leave the Director's office, Vance held out his hand and Tim was forced to hand over his weapon and badge; he was no longer a Field Agent. He was - he didn't know what he would be now. Was he still an agent or just a geek in the basement?

Ziva, essentially fired as their Mossad liaison and partner, would have to leave the country because she could not remain in the US without a job, although Tim supposed she could work at the Israeli embassy. Tony was going afloat, Gibbs had a new team and he was banished, thrown away, whatever good work he'd done in the last four, almost five, years, ignored or found wanting. He hoped he was overreacting and was certain he'd be told more once he reported to his new supervisor.

When they reached their bullpen, Tim looked at his cubicle, trying to focus on the immediate need, cleaning out their desks. From the instructions the new director gave, Tony only had hours to report to his new post, Ziva would be leaving for Israel and Boss, Tim looked around for Boss but he'd disappeared. And Tony was quiet, too quiet.

Tim didn't know what he had in his desk that he wanted to take with him and he didn't much care. This was just wrong. Tony and Ziva had been following direct orders from Shepard. He'd heard Gibbs tell them that, he'd said it to him, too.

He hoped they'd go out for drinks after they left the office, or at least talk at some point. He said that aloud but neither Ziva nor Tony responded. Tony went somewhere in the early afternoon and never came back. Tim checked and the only thing he took was his Mighty Mouse stapler. Ziva put her few personal belongings in her pack, gave Tim a gentle kiss on the cheek and walked out. Gibbs was still gone. He put a few things in his pack and left, the bullpen empty and silent behind him.
