Beep! Beep! Beep!
A hand reached out to feel its hand across the alarm clock, trying to hit the snooze button. After three missed attempts, on the fourth try, the hand managed to hit the button. The young blond-haired woman that was lying in bed rolled over on to her back and groaned.
She rubbed her face as she sat up. She listened carefully, could she hear voices talking?
She climbed out of bed and went to look at the top of the stairs. The woman could see a man and another woman talking downstairs.
"You won't be down here when I get back. Goodbye, um…" The female voice said quietly from downstairs. The woman recognized this as her sisters' voice.
"Derek." A male voice replied.
"Right, Derek. Meredith." The female voice spoke again.
Suddenly she saw the woman coming towards the stairs. So, she hurried back to her bed before she could be seen. She climbed back into bed.
"Mer! Meredith!" The woman called out from her bed.
Suddenly the bedroom door swung open, and the blond-haired lady from downstairs appeared in the doorway.
"What Brianna?" Meredith said as she stood there only in her dressing gown.
"Who was that?" Brianna asked.
"Just some guy from the bar last night," Meredith defended herself. "Look I'm getting in the shower; I don't want to be late for our first day."
Brianna pulled herself out of her bed and began to get ready for the day. Brianna picked up her bag and waited by the front door for her sister.
"Mer! Come on, you were the one who didn't want to be late." Brianna called up the stairs. "We cannot be late for the first day of our intern year!"
Brianna and Meredith were due to begin their residency at Seattle Grace Hospital and today was their first forty-eight-hour shift. Following in the footsteps of their renowned surgeon mother, Ellis Grey. Just then Meredith came running down the stairs buttoning up her shirt.
"I'm sorry, Bree," Meredith said as she picked up her bag.
Brianna hurried her sister out the door and into the car as they drove to the hospital. By the time they got there, they were already running a few minutes late. They found where the other interns were meeting. They both snuck in quietly to the book of the room.
"A month ago, you were in the med school, being taught by doctors. Today you are the doctors." The doctor at the front of the group said as they opened the door to an operating room.
Brianna and Meredith looked around the operating theatre as the doctor that they followed in continued you to address them.
"The seven years that you will spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and the worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point. Look around you, say hello to your competition." The doctor said. Brianna looked around the home, sizing up her fellow doctors. "Eight of you will switch to an easier speciality, five of you will crack under the pressure, two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line; this is your arena. How well you play is up to you."
Brianna and the other interns made their way to the intern locker room. Brianna got changed into her light blue scrubs and hung her stethoscope around her neck. She tied her hair up whilst the residents started to call for their interns. The residents would be teaching them for the next year.
"Only six women out of twenty," Meredith said to Brianna and one of the other interns that was getting changed next to them.
The other doctor was Asian and had curly black hair.
"Yeah and I heard one of them was a model, that's really going to help with the respect thing." The other doctor said.
"Your Cristina, right?" Meredith asked.
Cristina nodded. "Which resident are you assigned to? I got Bailey."
"The Nazi? Yeah, we got her too." Brianna said.
Cristina looked between the two of them.
"Twins," Brianna said.
"You got the Nazi, so did I." One of the male interns said to the three of them. "At least we'll be tortured together. Hi, I'm George O'Malley."
George came over to Brianna.
"Ummm, we met at the mixer, you had a black dress on with a slit up the side, and you were wearing strappy sandals…." Brianna just stared at George; she did not remember him. "Now you think I'm gay. I'm not gay. It's just that…um… it's just. You were pretty unforgettable." George continued.
Brianna awkwardly looked at George just then she was saved by a voice calling out her name to go and show her to her resident. The group of interns that were assigned to Dr Bailey went to go and find who they were.
They were directed to a short lady who did not fit the profile of a Nazi.
"I thought the Nazi would be a guy," George said.
"I thought the Nazi would actually be a Nazi." Meredith chipped in.
Just then they were joined by another female intern, whose hair was even blonder than Brianna.
"Maybe it's professional jealousy. Maybe she's brilliant, and they call her the Nazi because they are jealous. Maybe she's nice." The blond intern said.
"Let me guess… you're the model," Cristina said to her.
The blond doctor turned around and glared at Cristina. Brianna watched as the blond doctor walked up to Dr Bailey and introduced herself as Isobel or Izzie Stevens. The Nazi just stared at her and then turned her attention to the rest of her interns.
"I have five rules, memorize them. Rule number one do not bother sucking up. I already hate you, and nothing is going to change that." Dr Bailey began.
Rule number two was that you must answer every page at a run. Rule number three was not to wake her whilst she was sleeping unless a patient is dying; this went in hand with rule number four. The dying patient better not be dead by the time Dr Bailey reaches the patient; otherwise, she would have been woken up for no good reason, and they would have killed a patient.
"Are we clear?" Dr Bailey asked.
"You said five rules. That was only four." Brianna said.
Just then Bailey's pager beeped. She looked at it and then at her interns. She then started to run down the corridor.
"Rule number five! When I move, you move."
Brianna and the other interns chased Dr Bailey through the hospital and onto the roof to meet the incoming helicopter on the helipad. Once the door was open, the doctors helped the paramedics get the stretcher out of the helicopter.
"What do we got?" Bailey asked.
"Katie Bryce, 15-year-old female, new-onset seizures, intermittent for the last week, I.V lost en route, started grand mal seizing as we came into land." The paramedic explained as they got her into the room.
Katie was still seizing.
"Right let's get her on her side." Bailey began. "Izzie give her 100 milligrams of diazepam."
They eventually managed to stabilize Katie. When another doctor, Dr Burke, came in to check on Katie. Bailey and Burke agreed that they needed to shotgun Katie.
"That means we need to book every test in the book," Bailey said. "C.T., CBC, Tox screen. Cristiana and Meredith, you are on labs. George, patient workups. Brianna, take her for a C.T, she's your responsibility now."
"Wait. What about me?" Izzie called out after Bailey as she went to leave the room with Burke.
Bailey turned around on her heel and smiled at Izzie. "Honey, you get to do rectal exams."
Brianna, Meredith, and Cristiana each looked at each other. She tried not to laugh at Izzie's misfortune out of fear that Bailey might swap them, and they end up on rectal examinations.
The interns dispersed once Bailey had left. Brianna took the breaks off Katie's bed and began to wheel her towards the elevator to take her for her C.T. scan.
"You're lost, aren't you," Katie complained.
Brianna had been pushing Katie around the hospital for half an hour now, and she still had no idea which way it was to the C.T. scanner.
"I'm not lost." Brianna defended herself. "How are you feeling?"
"How do you think I'm feeling? I'm missing my pageant." Katie whined.
"You're missing your pageant?" Brianna wondered.
"The Spokane Teen Miss. This was my year; I could have won." Katie said with Brianna, not really paying much attention.
Brianna walked down the corridor and realized that they had reached a dead end and she turned them around and started to step back in the other direction.
"You're so lost. Are you like new or something." Katie sniped at Brianna.
Eventually, Brianna managed to get Katie in for her scan. It finally reached a time that meant Brianna would be able to go and get some food. She saw her sister and some other interns chatting. She walked over with her food and slumped into one of the chairs next to Izzie.
"Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass. I swear if I hadn't taken the Hippocratic oath, I would have strangled her to death by now." Brianna sighed as she shoved some food into her face. When Brianna looked up, she saw that all the other interns were staring at her, clearly shocked at what she had just said. "What?"
Brianna went back to eating when Dr Burke wondered over to the table where the interns were sitting. He came to tell which of the interns had been picked for the first intern surgery. Brianna stopped eating and sat up, hoping that Burke would pick her. But he didn't, he chose George. Everyone went back to what they were, Brianna was the only one to congratulate George on being selected for the surgery.
Brianna finished her food and got up. She went back to check on Brianna. When she got to her room, she saw that she was still asleep. Brianna was making sure that she was comfortable when suddenly, she felt someone push past her. It was a man and a woman.
"Katie, honey. It's your mum and dad." The woman said.
Brianna turned her attention to Katie's parents. "She was given a sedative when she went for her C.T scan, which she is still sleeping off at the moment," Brianna explained.
"Will she be alright? Our doctor at home said she might need an operation. Is that true?" Her dad asked.
"Well um…I'm not sure. I'm not the doctor. I am a doctor, but I'm not Katie's doctor. I will just go and find him for you right now." Brianna said whilst backing out the door.
Brianna walked down the corridor when she bumped into Bailey.
"Oh, Dr Bailey. Katie's parents have questions should I send you to talk to them or should I find Dr Burke." Brianna asked.
"No, Burke's off the case. Katie's doctor is the new neurosurgeon, Dr Shepherd. He's right over there." Dr Bailey pointed to a man who was introducing himself to some other doctors.
Brianna stared at Dr Shepherd for a few seconds. She recognized him, but she couldn't be sure where she knew him from. So, she stared at him for longer this time. Then it hit her. He was the man that he had seen her sister with this morning. She just had to play it cool, he hadn't seen her. There was no reason he would who she was. But he would surely work it out when she went over and introduced herself. Brianna took a breath and went to walk over but she couldn't, she had to go find her sister first. She froze on the spot and looked over at the doctor her sister had slept with last night. Not only he was he a colleague he was also the head of a department.
"Of all the people, Mer." Brianna thought to herself.
Brianna looked back again, this time she locked eyes with the man. Brianna quickly turned around and hurried back down the corridor she had just walked along.
Brianna was looking for her sister when she felt someone grab her by the wrist and pull her away. Next thing she knew she was standing on the stairwell staring at the man her sister had slept with.
"Sorry, you aren't the person who I thought you were." Dr Shepherd apologized when he realized she wasn't Meredith.
"No, you probably thought I was my sister," Brianna said confidently, trying to act like she was not uncomfortable with the situation she was in. "Hi, I'm Brianna Grey. I think you slept with my sister last night."
