Prologue

"For over a century I've lived in secret, hiding in the shadows... until now. I am a vampire... and this is my story"

A couple, Darren Mallory and Brooke Fenton, were driving down a road surrounded by forest in the dead of night, on their way back from a concert, their car the only source of light.

"An hours drive to hear that crap" Darren complains as he drove through the drizzling rain "you know, it wasn't even a band! A guy with a guitar" He shakes his brown locked head "an hour each way"

"It wasn't that bad" an amused Brooke replied brushing a blond strand of wavy hair away from her face, turning to look at him with her blue eyes.

"He sounded like James Blunt" he says dryly eyes focused on the road.

"What wrong with that?" She asks a little indignantly.

"We already have a James Blunt, ones all we need"

She throws her head back, her laughter filling the car, a wide smile upon her face, "so why did you come?" She questions.

Finally he turns to her and smiles "because I love you" he says, hazel eyes full of love as he looks at her.

Brooke looks down her hair creating a curtain of privacy, but not before he sees her big smile and bright red cheeks. Darren chuckles and turns back to the road.

Brooke lifts her head up to look out the window, her smile turning into a frown "what's with all the fog?" She asks worried.

"It'll clear in a sec" Darren states soothingly.

"OH MY GOD! WATCH OUT" she screams at him suddenly, a split second before their car hits someone standing in the road and they fly over the roof of the car as the window cracks.

Darren breaks violently and the car squeals spinning on the wet roads before they finally slide to a stop.

Brooke trembles violently as she realises what just happened and Darren sits, his mouth agape in shock and horror.

He quickly snaps out of his stupor turning to his love "are you alright?" He asks frantically, looking her over for nonexistent injuries.

"We just hit someone!" She cries hysterically, shaking her head "oh my god".

"Call for help!" Darren tells her as he quickly fumbles with his seatbelt, hands shaking, and exits the car into the dark night, closing the car door behind him. He runs toward the still body laying on the road.

Brooke rummages clumsily through her bag, grabbing her phone and dialling the ambulance, chanting under her breath "Come on! Come on! Come on!" Eyes closed and a single tear running down her face.

Darren rapidly approaches the body, "please be alive" he pleads as he bends over the leather encased man. His hand hovers over the persons ring adorned hand, "oh my god" he whispers in disbelief as he reaches the realisation that the man is dead... this is his fault... he killed him.

Suddenly the man lets out a ferocious growl as he lunges forward and grabs Darrens throat, spins behind him and sinks his sharp teeth into his vulnerable neck... and Darrens world goes black.

Brooke sits in the car oblivious and sighs in frustration. She hastily unbuckles her seatbelt and climbs out of the car. "THERE'S NO SIGNAL!" She shouts, slamming the car door shut "DARREN!" She calls out questioningly. Panic paints itself across her face, as the ominous fog continues to roll, there's no sign of him. "DARREN!" She shouts again, praying for a response.

BANG! She spins around in alarm and screams in horror, Darrens bloody corpse is on the bonnet of the car, his once lively eyes, wide and empty. She turns, tears streaming down her face, and sprints down the dark road, blonde hair billowing behind her and terror coursing through her veins. A guttural growl reverberated around her and suddenly shes grabbed and lifted from above, screaming as she goes.

The thrum of the car is the only sound to be heard in deafening silence.
