When my eyes opened to the harsh and blinding light, I knew I wasn't in my bedroom anymore. I was in the infamous Paul Lahote's bedroom. He had reputation for being the 'manwhore of La Push'. I wanted to get a piece of that to see him in action for myself.
Who could really blame me? Really? I was sixteen years old. A beautiful Quileute girl (if I say so myself) who had full of hormones that need to be released.
I wanted to know what the big deal about Paul was. If he's really good in bed like the girls I know said he was or if that was just a lame rumor.
From my firsthand experience, it wasn't lame. Not one bit. All of it was true.
We started as having a relationship that's friends with benefits just once, but then it turned into something more. Nothing romantic by any means, but we just did it more often. Mostly, at his house.
Unlike mine, it was just him and his father living there. That's why it was easier to do it. Fewer people. His father was always out leaving him by himself which Paul didn't mind. Meant more freedom. I had more people under my roof. There were my parents, my fourteen-year-old little brother, Seth, and our twenty-year-old sister, Leah. Leah was protective (okay, scratch that. She's extremely overprotective) of Seth and me being her little siblings. She'll greatly disapprove of me being Paul Lahote's pathetic one-night standers.
But I'm almost an adult and she always can't tell me what to do. Besides, Paul was a good guy once you get to know him aside from his womanizing ways. Nobody ever gave him a chance because all they see was that and his angry exterior.
We're getting dressed when it was early in the morning. Maybe around six. I have to get home quickly before anyone knew that I was gone. Paul always left early in the morning, too, but I never knew what he was really up to. I know he did hang out a lot with the guy I hate more than anyone else, Sam Uley, along with another guy I hate with a burning, intense passion who was Jared Cameron. Sam and Jared were on two different levels of my hatred.
Sam was Leah's ex-boyfriend almost fiancé. Until he dumped her and left her for our cousin, Emily Young, who took him without question. I hated them both for how they carelessly broke my sister's heart. Leah was in so much pain and that's why she became so angry and bitter to pretty much everyone. Except not in front of my brother and me on good days.
Jared was my ex-boyfriend. We dated for two years until he randomly broke it off. But I knew there was a major change about him like what Sam went through. It was almost similar. They got angrier, lose their temper easily, and it was like they both got high off steroids. I mean, if you see them in person, they look massive as in strength and size. Jared and Sam got together as if starting up a gang and they got Paul into it, too.
But the difference with Paul was, he never did anything to hurt me. I just wanted to use him to get back at Jared because they're suddenly best buds now. I think it may have worked because I always see Jared's angered glares at me when we pass each other by at the school hallways.
But why should he care? He's off being all lovey-dovey with Kimberly Mendez. That's who he dumped me for.
Leah and I were a lot alike when it came to our love lives. That's why we're so close.
But unlike Leah, I took revenge. And it was sweet.
"Where are you going?" I asked while I slipped on my shirt for last. Paul already got fully clothed at a faster speed. "To hang out at Sam's with Jared, Embry, and Jake?"
Embry Call and Jacob Black were even a part of their group which I thought was very odd. They're usually seen with their best friend, Quil Ateara V. Maybe the gang rumor that I made up sounded enticing to someone like Embry and Jacob. But I don't think anyone knew it was me who started that rumor.
"You caught me, Eden," Paul muttered nonchalantly and was about to head out of his bedroom.
I followed him out and didn't care that my dark hair looked like it's in a sex-crazed style.
"Why do you even hang out with them?" I asked in disbelief. Paul and Jared being with Sam never made any sense. Jared wouldn't have broken up with me if it wasn't for Sam and randomly got hooked up with Kim. "Don't you care how much they hurt me and my sister?" Then I snorted at who I was talking to. "Of course you don't. Guys like you, Sam, and Jared stick together. I feel bad for the poor girl's heart that Embry and Jake will break next. You guys are all the same-"
Paul whirled to me and looked so furious that I almost took a step back at his livid expression. I knew Paul can get angry but never sat in the front row for it.
"You don't know what you're talking about. So, just keep quiet about them."
"Then why don't you tell me what's up with them?" I demanded, but can't help to sound desperate and exhausted. It felt like the same question I've been asking Jared, but he would never budge for an answer.
"I don't think that's any of your business, Eden," Paul replied coolly.
I rolled my eyes, hating all the secrets. It was a secret for why Sam broke up with Leah and a secret for why Jared broke up with me. I hated it. All of it.
Why can't anyone be honest? Why all the secrecy?
"Fine. Whatever. Be that way." I snapped.
"See you tonight?" He asked acting sweet to get on my nerves. I tried to not let him get to me.
"Maybe, maybe not." I shrugged.
At least that answer didn't get him happy. Good.
"Screw you, Eden."
I smirked. "I believe you already took care of the job, Paul."
We both left the house for our separate ways. I went to my hand-me-down car that was once Leah's when she turned sixteen. It was a used Toyota Camry and she now owns a nice Honda Civic. When I got into my car, I always notice Paul going off to the backyard and into the woods. I never knew why, but stopped questioning it. Not like he'll tell me anyway.
Minutes later, I arrived home and parked my car in the driveway. I entered my house and went to the kitchen to get a glass out to pour myself some orange juice.
"Where were you?" It was my little fourteen-year-old brother, Seth, who demanded. He seemed tenser and anything can set him off these days. I figured it might be some boy puberty thing.
"I was out, little bro," I ruffled up his dark hair. "You don't have to worry about your big sis. It's sweet though."
"Knock it off, Eden!" He snapped at me, swatting my hand away. I was taken aback now. Seth usually didn't act like this.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked sharply.
"You're always out and not telling where you are to Mom and Dad," Seth said in frustration. "They get worried about you. Especially, Leah. We heard that you might be with that Paul kid. Are you really, Eden? You better not be with him. Paul is definitely not good news. He'll use you and hurt you."
I didn't know where they could hear that from about me being with Paul. Maybe one of my friends had leaked it. Probably need to have a chat with them.
"Thanks for your concern, Seth, but it's none of your business if I am with him. I already know how he is, anyway. So, just kindly back off." I tried to calmly say to him but was losing my patience. He started so abrasively with me in the beginning.
"Sorry that I care." Seth scoffed and shook his head. He was getting something out of the fridge and I rolled my eyes at his weird behavior this morning.
As much as I love Seth, he was annoying. It's the same with Leah. It's like anything can set her off. It got worse when Emily moved in with Sam sometime after she visited us. That was way too fast and too soon. Leah and I couldn't believe that happened and it was like another slap in the face for her. God, I hated Sam so much, and Emily, too. Emily wanted Leah to be over at her house to make amends, but Leah being Leah, would not have that. She kept refusing each offer.
"Oh, hi, Eden," My mother, Sue, came in with my father, Harry. "How nice of you to join us this morning." There was an edge to her tone that didn't seem nice; maybe she knew I was gone last night.
"Hi, Mom, Dad." I pleasantly greeted them anyway.
"Where did you go off to last night?" Dad suspiciously asked me. "Your bed was empty."
"I was out with a friend. Didn't I tell you?" I ignored Seth's glare that I just smoothly lied to our parents.
"No, you didn't. Just for that, you're grounded." Mom sternly told me.
I groaned and my shoulders slumped.
Well, my grounding meant I couldn't see Paul again tonight...
Mom started to cook breakfast and Dad made themselves coffee so he could sit at the table to read his daily newspaper with his drink. That was their routine every morning.
"Eden, can you go get Leah for breakfast? It's almost ready." Mom ordered some and I muttered a "Sure" as I went to her bedroom.
"Lee?" I knocked on her door and opened it. She was still lying in bed. The covers were over her body and I didn't know if she was awake or not. "Breakfast is ready. Get up, sunshine." I teased her with the nickname because she was anything, but a ray of sunshine.
"Not hungry." I heard her muffled voice.
"C'mon, Leah," I rolled my eyes. "Just get out and eat with us. It's not the end of the world."
"I wish it was." She quipped.
God, Leah can be so dramatic sometimes.
I leaned against the doorway and crossed my arms. "If you don't get up, I'm going to talk about how amazing Samuel Uley is," Then I said to myself thoughtfully. "Hmmm...where should I begin? Have you seen his abs lately? He barely wears a shirt anymore and he looks packed. God, Sam is so sexy-"
"Shut up, Eden!" Leah bolted straight up from the bed looking pissed off.
Hah! Knew that would work.
"Get out of bed then," I retorted. "Or do you want to hear how I think his voice sounds so deep and hot now?"
Leah got out of bed and looked like she was about to charge at me. There was an empty glass on her nightstand and she grabbed it and threw it at me. Thankfully, I was quick enough to move out of the way.
"Woah!" I exclaimed and winced at the loud shatter of the glass hitting the wall.
"What's going on up there?" Mom yelled at us from downstairs.
"Nothing!" Leah and I yelled back. Leah looked at me in shock that I covered for her but didn't say anything.
"I'll get down and clean the mess up later," Leah grumbled. "Just shut up about Sam, alright? Not another word about him."
"Alright, Leah," I obeyed and then apologized. "I'm sorry."
Leah followed me downstairs and we all helped ourselves to our mother's delicious breakfast. Looks like it was some kind of egg casserole with French toast. Mmmm...
I recognized Leah and Seth were eating a lot more than usual lately. Not only did they get seconds, but thirds. I didn't know how much they could eat. Even I didn't eat that much. But I closed my mouth shut about it because they're both moody lately.
The morning still didn't go off well because Dad had to talk about Sam. Leah warned me not to talk about Sam anymore and Dad just kept pushing the envelope to unintentionally aggravate Leah. But honestly, he should've known better that Sam was still an extremely sore and touchy subject.
Dad just loves Sam so much despite how much he hurt his daughter, but he didn't seem to care. He didn't seem to care that much when Jared broke up with me and moved on to Kim so fast. His nonchalant attitude about it got me angry at him, too. Even Mom acted the same way and took Sam's side.
"Leah, Emily wants you to-" Dad started, but Leah interrupted him.
"No."
"You didn't even hear what your father has to say." Mom reproached.
"If it involves that traitor wanting me to do something for her, then the answer is no." She replied spitefully.
"Leah, Emily is not a traitor," Dad scolded her. "How dare you call her that-"
"You defend Emily more than you do to your own daughters!" I argued, coming to Leah's defense. Only Seth and I ever did for her. "You don't care how much Sam and Jared hurt us!"
"Yes, we do, Eden-"
"Not that much," I remarked sarcastically, shaking my head.
"Leah, why don't you just swallow your pride and make amends with Emily and Sam?" Dad tiredly asked her. "Emily really wants to apologize to you and clarify a few things about her and Sam-"
"Oh, are you speaking for her now?" Leah sniggered and pushed her clean plate away. "I'm done eating."
Leah stood up, almost knocked everything over on the table with her rough movements.
"Leah!" Mom scolded and our parents went up to get her.
Seth and I exchanged foreboding glances at each other knowing that this would end up as a terrible fight. We got up to watch the blowout in the living room.
Leah fought with our parents about Sam and Emily. She was explosive like dynamite. I knew she hated them now, but not to this extent. Her anger was rather scary.
"NO!" Leah yelled, having a tantrum like a child. Her nostrils were flaring and her hands clenched into tight fists that her knuckles turned white. "I am NOT going to see that bitch and traitor!"
"Leah!" Mom yelled at her. She was really pissed to yell at either of her children. "What is it with your attitude lately? You will not speak to your father and I like that again! And definitely not to Emily and Sam! Believe me, I understand why you feel that way about them-"
"NO! You DON'T understand! Otherwise, you wouldn't defend them and take their side over me! Your own daughter! How could you?! I HATE you! I HATE the BOTH of you!"
"Leah..." Seth and I were scolded because of her saying that she hated our parents. She might regret that. I didn't want her to have any more pain.
Leah was even shaking in so much anger and I walked closer to her to calm her down. Usually, I can do that for her. I put my hands onto her shoulders and looked into her dark brown eyes full of hatred.
"Calm down, Leah, please-" I got forcefully pushed back by her tremendous strength.
Since when did she get so strong?
I stumbled backward until I regained my balance.
"DON'T tell me to calm down, Eden!" Leah yelled and then she let out a blood-curdling scream.
I looked over at my parents being scared and paralyzed at what was going on with my sister. I didn't know what was wrong with her.
"Leah-" I tried to get through to her, but then...something unbelievable happened like you only see from a sci-fi horror movie.
My own sister phased into a huge, gigantic wolf that's like the size of a horse or mammoth. She phased into a gray wolf, but her size was small enough to tell she's feminine. Her ginormous size was way too huge for our small living room that she broke the couch in half. And in her fit of rage, her paw took a swipe on my arm and knocked me down onto the floor. I screamed at the excruciating pain as I clutched my injured arm that was bleeding profusely.
"Leah, how could you?!" Seth fumed at her. At our wolf of a sister. "You hurt our sister! You-"
Seth made the same blood-curdling screamed and phased into a wolf-like Leah had in a blink of an eye.
Everything was happening so fast and I just wanted to wake up from this dream. No, not a dream. But an awful and terrifying nightmare. Both of my siblings turned into these huge wolves!
Leah - as her gray wolf form - whimpered when she looked at me. Having too much fear, I backed away from her on my knees, afraid of what she'll do next. She must've seen my fear because I saw her wolfish eyes look at me in guilt and apologetic, but I wasn't sure. I knew I should just get away from her and Seth and -
"Harry!" My mother screamed and I looked over at my parents where my father was having a heart attack.
He desperately grasped onto his chest as if he was suffering from pain and was making faces that I never wanted to see again, but it was ingrained into my mind.
"Daddy...?" I called for him weakly and tried to get up so I can call the ambulance for my weeping mother who was at his side. She was on the floor with him and he seemed to lay there limp, lifeless. I struggled to get up because I felt weak at the amount of blood I lost from the wound Leah gave me.
I noticed that she was gone and there was wolf Seth. He was a sandy-colored wolf and he was tall and gangly. Easy to spot him. When we met eyes, that's when I felt I was a goner and I couldn't support my body anymore. My blood was oozing out of me like a flood and I felt it stain everywhere on my clothes.
In the background, I faintly heard my mother screaming for me, too, but my eyes were drooping to a close. Unable for me to respond to her. The last thing I heard was Seth howling...
