Chapter 1
The snow fell like freshly dropped tears along the forest line. Droplets clung to the branches, the sheer pressure even overlapping, giving off the impression of a hunched back.
Piles of snow decorated the forest. Though, it was the darkness of the night that entranced the place with brilliant beauty. The contrast of darkness and light as a figure laid within a large snow mound.
The chill of the fresh breeze mildly disturbing him as his piercing blue eyes began to slowly widen, illuminating the twilight of the night beneath his hood. His form began to tense up within the snow, the blanket that began to cover him was quickly swiped off from his free hand.
Though…it was the sizzling smoke and the dulled pain that dragged his attention down to his right leg. The boy grasped the snow with his leathery gloves as he pushed himself slowly away. The smoke emitted a strange heat that was even dousing any snowflakes that would land near the area.
A loud sigh emitted from the figure. "Motherfucking…Yeager."
The boy's fingers tossed off his hood as he combed through it with his right hand. Long raven hair spilling through the fragments of fingers. His olive skin greeted the shivering cream of the moon as his ears began to twitch.
He could hear it…the muscles in his body being repaired, the bone being relocked and reinforced back into place. He could even feel the sting of the steam starting to leave from his open wound.
"Come on, Isaac!"
Eren's voice arose through his head as he quickly shook the thought free. His head before was hurting like a bitch though now he supposed that the wound most likely regenerated. He was even being able to remember what had happened.
That Yeager…Isaac eyed the wound as he watched the steam start to leave. His leg repaired and the wound firmly closed as he placed pressure on his leg as he lifted himself up. Him and the rest of the regiment were doing their winter training.
They were split up into different groups. He was assigned in a five-person team. Connie, Eren, Armin, Jean and…
Isaac's face began to turn crimson. Sasha…the beautiful girl who entranced him. He could still remember her, the way her dark eyes looked when she focused on something. The way she did her ponytail or her smile.
It wasn't just Sasha. Mina, Crista, Ymir, Mikasa and even…. Annie? The thought of the weird girl sent a cold shudder through Ben's core. That girl…she was weird, maybe it was her tone towards everything that threw her off. Ben threw his hood up as he began to walk through the forest.
Sure, Sasha was cute, and he enjoyed teasing her. Though, the other girls were something else. Why should he just be restricted towards one girl if there was a pond of woman to pick from!
A small grin spread across his face. 'Mina, isn't that bad as well.' He pondered as he began to trench through the snow. It's been a long time ever since he was able to fall asleep, it felt refreshing in its own way.
Kicking, screaming and the tears would follow shortly afterwards. That was why those bags were under his eyes all the time…he didn't want the others to see him like that. He could hardly remember who he was before he arrived on the island, but he never wanted to show others weakness.
A lesson his father beat into him…
"What?"
Isaac's fingers trembled along the skin of his face, a vibrant stinging sensation below his left eye…though there wasn't anything there, no wound or mark…like a memory ingrained into him. His eyes scanning the cold snow smothered by his large boots. He couldn't remember…it was like a feeling, always a feeling. Why was he here?
His eyes traced down to his hands. His fingers squeezing deep into his glove as he felt the waves of tension roll from him. This power that he had…this power that allowed him to transform into a titan, the power which saved him so many times before.
What even was it?
These empty memories…of people that he feels that he should know, these empty memories of places which he felt like he has been before, why do they feel so empty?
Isaac's body slouched along a tree. Vibrant strands of orange sparks jutting out from him as he felt his body contort.
…A girl with a sick father…the girl he abandoned in those walls…
…A mission to complete…
…A war to fight…
Isaac's breathing began to stabilize as he felt his form begin to return to normal. His feet now slowly moving forward in a soft paced walk. Didn't matter anymore, not in these walls. His boots smushed along the cold snow.
His ears perked up as he heard a twig snap. He let out a shallow breath as his eyes trained along the sound. His golden eyes narrowing to try and peer through the snowstorm.
'Maybe it was all just in my imagination…'
Ben nodded his head with the statement as he emptied out with a cold breath of fresh air. Ready to take another step as he heard another twig snap from right behind him.
Ben quickly turned back. Now his body shaking from the cold and the feeling of adrenaline working through his core. He heard tales of places like this, outside of civilization where the beast of the night lurked and waited for the perfect time to strike.
Ben heard another twig break as his boots drained through the snow to observe the source of the sound. Wolves…bears…some other animal!
Ben shivered as he took a step backward. Hell…he didn't want to be out here. He didn't even want to be a soldier; he didn't have anywhere else to go so enlisting seemed to be the only option. Hell…the only thing he really enjoyed was growing plants and cooking!
The main goal after this was to buy some nice farmland and open a shop in the countryside! He didn't want to be titan or animal fodder; he didn't care for all that bullshit that Yeager sprouted out. "Kill all titans!" or that "We're free!" Bullshit the guy would sprout out.
Maybe if Eren kept all that to himself then maybe he would have been able to pay attention to the path he was going. Maybe he wouldn't have been so bored that he wouldn't have dozed off the side of a mountain!
Was it truly wrong to live the life you want…no matter the chains of responsibility that weights you down!
He got it the first time he said it, and the last time he said it. Though, this wasn't his responsibility. He didn't want to die…was it really that wrong to want to live a long and full life.
'Fine do whatever you want, Yeager. If you want to go fight the titans go fight the titans…don't get Sasha and the rest involved with your crap. We all have dreams that aren't involved with revenge or fighting. My father wanted me to fight and I sure as shit won't let you drag me into that…I have a dream and we don't live forever…especially for me, I only have less than thirteen years myself.'
He shook his head. There was a time and a place to think more about these strange memories of his. Though, not here…not right now.
"Fucking…Eren Yeager!" His voice carried weight through the blistering snowstorm as he trained his attention back towards the situation, he was in. His right hand dug into his belt, his fingers tightening along a strand of twine as he began to pull out the blade from his belt.
A hunting knife from Sina…an ordinary blade, the blade length was the size of his finger and the grip fit comfortably in his palm, the gleam of the metal caught the glare of the moon. He had to do some extra work around the camp, mostly cleaning and tending to the stables. Though, it was worth it. He didn't use it to cook or to clean…occasionally using it to wood carver, though that didn't matter.
The blade held a singular and much more vital importance. Isaac's eyes trained along the snow filled sky. The blast of yellow light won't be ordinary and shall surely drag attention, though…what other choice did he have?
He had no dream of being fodder…he came too far for that. Ben took a deep breath as he emptied his lungs, the prickling of the blade dug into his fist as he squeezed the cold blade deeper inside. He could feel the crimson from his palm leak free.
He could feel the indents form along his eyes as they began to spread freely like tendrils…soon the titan flesh and bone shall surely follow and…
The sound of something coming perked his ears up as the transformation stopped. His feet twisting towards the sound as he dropped the blade, his fist up as he swung forward. His right fist colliding with the mess of flesh.
A girly shriek emptied out from him from the sudden attack only to see…
"Connie!" Isaac watched the short, bald boy writhe on the ground as he grappled onto his nose. "What the fuck, man!"
Connie began to pick himself up. His gaze narrowing as he pointed his finger at the towering boy. "I was just playing a joke!"
"Playing a joke…wow Connie!" Isaac shook his head, his eyes trained along the fallen boy. Scoffing at the very sight. "Your short and unfunny. You're not going to be able to get a girl if you're like that!"
"Psh…you're the last one I would talk to about relationship advice. Which one are you messing with now…Mina, Ymir, Crista…Sasha?"
"…you're a damn man whore and you can't even get a single one!"
Isaac's eyes popped out of there socket, a faint blush spreading from his cheeks as he lifted up his right hand. "Shut it you short fuck!" He screamed through the forest as he got ready to wail on him again.
Though, Isaac simply looked at his raised hand. He shook his head at the very thought, he already got Connie…what was the point of continuing the fight anyway, he was his friend and comrade. Isaac took a step forward as he rested his hand in front of Connie, as the short boy grabbed it, he helped lift himself up. "What are you doing out here?" Isaac asked as Connie began to dust the snow off himself.
"Me and Sasha went down looking for you. Eren wanted to come as well though he was the leader of the squad, we couldn't…"
"I get it, Connie." Isacc spoke up cutting Connie off. He didn't need or want a long explanation for what happened. Hell, he was freezing his ass off here for a long time. Heck…he nearly even transformed, and if he didn't react in time the blast would of caught Connie.
A shudder passed through his body…of Connie's burnt corpse simmering in the mounds of snow. 'No…don't think like that. He's fine and everything worked out okay.'
Isaac wasn't an idiot…they needed to reach the cabin before the storm got worse. Also, they had a specific time and place for where each squad would meet up. Him and Floch also had a decent surprise for the recruits.
'Yeah, I bet Sasha is going to enjoy that surprise'
He turned around as he tightened his hands along his backpack. He had an opportunity to impress, and he should have been smarter than potentially fucking it up. He heard another sound breach through the forest lining.
Sasha…
Isaac's lips began to twirl into a steady beam. There was something about the girl…he didn't know why but she stood out from the other girls he tried to get with, flirting with her…especially teasing her was the best part.
Though, as he watched her remove her hood and shake the exhaust snow. The way her red hair danced along the snowflakes within the storm. She was…
"Pretty…"
He aimlessly spoke as the girl continued following him. He shook the thought out of his head as Sasha stopped in front of him. She began to observe him. Her eyes training along his form as he softly grinned. "What…see something you like?" He shamelessly flirted, Connie's palm going across his face.
Sasha gazed up at him. A faint blush along her face. "No…though, I saw you fall. It looked bad so I'm making sure you're alright."
"Oh…I'm fine…fit as a fiddle. Though, when I saw you…I was a little dazed. The way you came out there, with the way the snow hit you had me feeling something strange for a second."
Her face brightened like a cherry. Isaac's golden eyes catching her own eyes and for a split second he felt something strange…almost like the electricity before a transformation, the feeling blasted through him like a gleam of a golden wave of heat.
A strange feeling, he never felt…even with Christa, Ymir or Mina. The way this girl looked made him feel something so strange and so powerful that he couldn't tell if it was real.
…and for a split second, he knew that he was falling in lo…
"Don't listen to him, Sasha. Isaac legit said the same line to Mina a week ago, he got it from Floch and he just slightly altered it."
Sasha's blushing cute face quickly contorted into a huff and a sneer as she quickly turned away from Isaac. Connie following as Isaac simply stood without motion. His feet slowly following afterwards.
They began to continue walking up the mountain. Picking up the pace due to the changing of the storm. Sasha was walking in front of Connie and Isaac as the two boys stared at the girl, usually they would walk together, there was enough room for a trio to past through.
Though…
"Sasha…" Isaac called out the girl's name. Sasha didn't turn around. Connie shaking his head as Isaac turned towards him for support, only for Connie to raise his hands in surrender. Though, Isacc didn't want to give up just yet. "Are…are you okay?" He stuttered out in fear of the girls response.
"I'm fine!" She half shouted, a groan radiating from her as her fingers combed through her hair. "Just leave me alone!"
Isaac and Connie both shot the other a glance at the other. "Nice going…Connie." Isaac spat out as he turned his attention to the girl walking quickly in front of him.
"Nice going!" He murmured to Connie. Connie craned his head towards Ben, opening his mouth in shock of the sudden accusation. "Yeah, you really had to mention that to Sasha. I'll make it up to her later."
"Um…yeah. It's true isn't it…I don't know why you do that." Connie released a cold sigh, his breath visible from the cold chill. "No girl takes you seriously now." He muttered underneath his breath, though not enough for Isaac to not hear.
Isaac shrugged his shoulders, acting like he didn't care for the sting Connie's words inflected onto him. His gaze still focused ahead, though now there was something else. A tint of sorrow etched into his voice. "Fine, whatever…no one in general takes me seriously." He spat out, his voice like venom and bile as he tried to shake off this strange feeling that plagued Connie's prior words.
"What do you mean?" he asked. Connie's eyes locked with his friends own. Isaac quickly turned his head away as he didn't want to look at him while he spoke.
He took a deep breath as the words crumbled from his open lips. "Connie…I'm not like Mikasa or Jean. I am quite horrible with ODM…hell I make Armin look competent with his skills compared to my own. I hold a voice without fire, sure I have my issues with Eren but I can't deny how his passions speak to people…the only good thing I can do is box and hand to hand. Both won't get me into the military police, I'm useless."
Connie's eyes widened from the sudden words emptied freely from his friend's mouth. For a second, he couldn't comprehend it, Ben was headstrong and always carried himself with this…weight. To find out that he felt like this…
"You're alright…no one…" He rushed to quickly to defend and interject his friend's bad views of himself.
"No one expects anything from me…" Ben interrupted. Cancelling out and tuning in and out of his friends own words.
"That's not what I mean."
Isaac stopped short, his feet starting to slowly trail as he shut his eyes, shaking his head as he tried to get out of his own head, trying to get out of the dark thoughts or the strange memories that would resurface. "I know…I'm sorry. Just reminded me of the type of shit my dad would tell me when he was angry. Honestly, doesn't matter anymore. Don't know why I'm telling you this…I feel kind of pathetic right now."
Connie stopped walking. His eyes danced along the snow as Isaac stopped a couple of feet away from him. "Isaac, I know you don't want to talk about it…"
"No…conversation over." Isaac bluntly spoke, his words cutting through the cold air like a blade as he attempted to silence the conversation. He already knew what Connie was talking about, he had no intention or desire to talk about his other…issues.
"Isaac, we don't mind. Honestly, today is proof that you haven't been doing okay. Seriously, it's okay if you want to talk about it."
Isaac grunted from the final words etched within his friends' comments, he was a man. Men don't have feelings…men don't cry…men act and protect. They fight for what's right and for the Eldian Empire, his father would beat the crap out of him if he talked about this with Connie…
Isaac's teeth sunk into his lips as he tried to shake away the dark memory, he didn't want to talk about this anymore. The past was the past and the wounds were there, you can't close those wounds. "I'm fine…I'm a man."
Connie let out another sigh. Patting his bald head as both boys began to walk again. "There isn't anything wrong with talking about your feelings or stuff we're not girls crying or doing stuff. Im just worried…"
"Im fine…god you sound like Floch." Ben jested as his gaze remained unchanged. His eyes focusing on something as he once again stopped in his tracks.
"Ay, why are you stopping?" Connie asked turning back towards his friend.
Ben was staring down at his glove. The wisp of smoke slowly exiting as the skin began to regenerate and close along the wound. "No…reason. Just thinking…that I lived in walls already for years in that damn zone…I could handle another thirteen."
