There exists an island in the middle of the sea that contains a creature of unimaginable horrors. It was a grotesque beast with various body parts of other animals. The Chimera. Long ago, this beast had lived on this island during the time of Beatrix the Gentle. The Chimera caused mischief and mayhem to the village and Beatrix was the only one who could stop him. Beatrix, before she left to aid the dragon king in his endeavors, had decided to seal the Chimera into a tomb so that he couldn't escape the island and cause more harm. She sent down a prophecy before she left.
"When a set of twins, one alpha and one omega are born, they will bring death and destruction upon the world. If the twins of the Cavendish blood pull the sword out of the Chimera's tomb, he will arise again."
"But Grandmother, why was Beatrix leaving the island?" A little girl with blonde and green hair looked up quizzical at a graying older woman sitting in a rocking chair.
"Because she was chosen by the dragon king to aid him in destroying the hydra. She left the island but wanted to leave her fellow citizens in good hands so she sealed the Chimera so that he couldn't leave."
"So what's that prophecy supposed to do then grandmother?"
"It will prevent his arrival again during the time we are without Beatrix and without the dragon king. If a Cavendish twin pulls the sword out, we are doomed and with the twins' help, he will arise."
"He sounds very bad."
"He was my little one. He was. But we don't need to worry about him at this time because he is sealed. So long as you don't mess with that sword and so long as we don't reunite you with your twin."
"Grandmother, did my mothers love me?"
"They do. Very much so, my little Diane."
"Alright class, now who can tell me what is the best way to understand your dragons?"
A woman with long flowing brown spun around to face her class of teenagers. Crimson eyes scanned the field of future dragon knights for any hands raised. One hand quickly shot up.
"Yes, Jeremiah."
"Naming them."
"Only partially correct but you still get points. Naming your dragon is one step. But the next step is bonding with your dragon. Ask them their life story. Each and every beast has a story. The dragons have been around for a while so it helps to get to know them better."
Another hand raised high in the air.
"Yes Sasha?"
"Lady Cavendish, is that how you bonded with Blue?"
"Please, Akko is fine but yes. I learned about Blue's past. Not through stories passed down from generations but by simply talking to him. I learned so much about our history because Blue was there. Your dragons have their own. Learn through them as well. That will cement that bond and help you understand them." Akko leaned her head against the furry cheek of her dragon, Blue. The dragon king returned the gesture.
A small giggle was the only sound as everyone scribbled their notes down. Akko turned to look at Haruka before cooing at her six month old baby. Blue leaned down and nuzzled the baby's head. Haruka babbled, hands waving in the air to touch his fur. Akko looked back at her class.
"Alright everyone, it's time to go home. Read chapter 27 in your books and remember, we start mock dragon flight this Friday so be prepared. It's not scary. Blue and I will be right beside you," Akko shouted to her students as they ran across the field to their homes.
Akko took Haruka and carried her along with her belongings. "Let's go see your momma and see what she's up to."
"Probably swamped with work," Blue followed closely behind Akko, making faces at Haruka.
"I hope not. It's been pretty stressful lately for Diana. Maybe we should plan a family vacation. Take our kids out of Luna Nova and maybe see some new sights."
Akko waved to the other citizens of Luna Nova as she walked towards the heart of Luna Nova and to her wife.
Diana sat back in her chair as she reviewed the documentation for new building permits. Anne sat in front of her, reviewing the same documents.
"If we build this, we may need to raise the taxes of people and I would preferably like to avoid that. I just don't want to be raising taxes. Unless, we are smart about the building process. We would still need to raise the taxes but it wouldn't be that noticeable to them. Anne, hand this off to Badcock and have her review my math. I think it is doable but I want to make sure before I put my stamp on it."
"Not a problem Master Diana. Now, eat something. I'm sure your wife will burst in here and yell at you for ignoring your stomach. I've seen Beatrix stare you down."
Diana chuckled at the thought of Akko barging in and force feeding her. Although, it wasn't a bad idea. "Thank you Anne. I will. Now, you better go home yourself. I'm sure my aunt is dying to see you."
Anne Finnelan bowed before walking out of the office space. Diana leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes, as she thought about her life. She placed a hand on her scar on her stomach. A memento of her fight for her family. She felt someone sit in her lap.
"Hey love," Diana's blue eyes open up to see crimson staring back at her. "Hey love. It's time to go home now. I'm sure the twins are dying to see you."
"Yes it is. Hello my Haruka. How's my big girl doing?" Diana pressed a kiss on her baby's forehead as Haruka babbled in her baby speech. "Really now. Um. Why yes I definitely understand. You had a busy day with your mother. I bet you learned a lot by going to school."
Akko had soon dragged her wife out of her office as they walked home. A tradition they started when Diana took over the master position once Holbrooke stepped down. Diana would still go out on missions as leader of the dragon knights and Akko still continued to be a knight as well but was also a teacher, helping future knights in their training. It had been six years since the defeat of the hydra and the Cavendish family had grown. Along with the twins, Akko has been blessed with another child. They couldn't have been happier with their family. Diana felt blessed to be married to a wonderful omega but she did miss her parents at times.
Diana soon steered Akko to a familiar location. "Diana, this isn't the way home."
"No, but I felt like just taking in the sights."
They stopped at the bridge, a place where they had started meeting each other in their youth and a place where Diana gave Akko her promise necklace. Akko pressed her body into Diana's as they overlooked the view. They could see all of Luna Nova and even the Priestess and the Seven Dragon Statue.
"It's amazing how much has changed over the years," Akko broke the silence.
"Yes it is but there are some things that I'm glad don't change, like you and our children."
Diana nuzzled her cheek on top of Akko's head. The priestess sighed at the affection. They stayed for an hour, just absorbing the sights and the calm before heading off to their manor.
If you asked anyone in Luna Nova about the Cavendish twins, they would tell you all the exact same thing. That the twins were sweet and kind. Always lending a helping hand to its citizens and to their mothers. Alice was the oldest as she was born first and had shown when she turned two that she was an alpha much like her mother Diana. Akio was behind her sister by five minutes, a fact Alice likes to remind her about and had shown as an omega like Akko. Alice was very much like Akko in the sense she was headstrong and acted before thinking. Akio was the shy one and was nervous about a lot of things, especially when it came to her older sister's antics. They both did inherit Diana's smarts and generosity. Top of their class but never ones to brag about it and more than willing to help their fellow classmates in their studies.
There was one special thing about the Cavendish girls. They had been picked by dragons the moment they had been born, specifically the daughters of the famous dragon king and much like their mother Akko, had been able to hear all dragons. The children were all loved relentlessly by their mothers.
Alice Cavendish tethered precariously on Shiro's head as she reached towards a book on the highest shelf in the Cavendish library.
"Careful. Careful there my little one," Shiro was attempting to remain as still as possible.
"Don't worry Shiro. Almost there. I almost have it."
"Alice, be careful," Akio stared up at her sister, clutching her dragon in her arms.
"I will Akio, don't worry. Almost there. Got it. I got it!"
"Oh thank the nines. Alright, I'm setting you down now. Hang on."
Alice hopped off of Shiro's head as she held the large book high over her head in victory.
"Now, let's read this story, I bet this is so good especially if it is higher up. Huh, funny. It's kind of light for such a huge book. Come on Akio."
Alice grabbed her sister's hand and led her to the table. She threw the book down on top of the table and pulled the chair over.
"Why this book, Alice?"
"I don't know. It looked interesting when I spotted it. It felt like it was calling out to me. But the book feels weird. Looks so big but it feels so light. I wonder what's in it."
The girls opened the book to reveal a key with the handle in the shape of the unicorn hiding in a compartment cut out of the pages.
"It's a false book. I wonder which lock this key opens? It's a mystery."
"It's like the story of Sherlock and Elementary: Mystery of the False Book." Akio was jumping up in her chair at the idea that they would live-out their favorite detective series.
"Exactly. But why do we have a false book with a key? Who hid this key? Maybe there is this huge mystery about our family and we have to be the ones to solve it!"
"Maybe. That would be so cool. Let's ask momma when she gets home, she may know. Maybe it belonged to our grandmas."
"Let's go exploring the manor till our moms get home. Maybe we can solve the mystery of this key before they get here. I bet they would be impressed that we managed to solve this mystery all by ourselves without any help. I know the perfect place we can start at."
"Where's that at Alice?"
"In momma's office. I remember seeing a huge wooden chest there. Momma said she was told to never open that chest by grandma Bernadette. I think this key holds the answer to opening it now."
"Maybe momma can open the chest now."
"Let's go."
Alice and Akio, with their dragons in tow, both ran out of the library in a rush, with Shiro racing to follow closely behind them.
When Alice opened the door to her alpha mother's office, she scanned the room for anything strange or suspicious. Akio tapped her shoulder to point to a strange wooden chest sitting on a bookshelf. They shared a nod before walking over to it. Shiro slowly made his way in before plopping on the floor. Azura, a small blue dragon with a white mane and Hikaru, a white dragon with a blue mane, walked over to him.
"Uncle Shiro, come on, get up. We have to figure out what's going on."
"I will girls, I will. Just let these old bones rest for a minute. Oh nines, I am getting too old for this. Now I
know how Blue feels."
"I remember momma said this chest has been here since she can remember," Akio said as Alice ran her hand over the carved image of a rearing unicorn.
"Maybe it belonged to grandma. It has our family symbol. Alright key, what secrets do you have for us?" Alice was about to open the chest when something picked her and her sister up. They both screamed.
"What are my two little gremlins doing here?"
Diana smiled down at her two daughters. They giggled as their mother peppered kisses on their heads.
"Momma, we found a key," Akio pointed to Alice who proudly held up the strange key.
"Where did you find this key?"
"We found it in a false book. It looks like it may be to that chest right there."
"My mother's Bernadette old chest. She told me I could never look inside it. I've been so curious about it for years. Well, looks like it's time to take a peek."
Diana set the girls down and grabbed the chest to place it onto her desk. She sat down in her chair and patted her legs. Alice and Akio quickly clambered into her lap to watch her open it. Diana inserted the key into the slot. It was a perfect fit.
"Why don't you two open it? You found the key after all."
"Okay momma."
The two girls grabbed the key together and unlocked the chest. Diana pried the lid open. Inside the chest were various yellow envelopes.
"Momma, what are those?" Alice peeked into the chest, moving some of the letters around to see if there was anything else in there.
"Looks like letters. I don't recognize this handwriting though."
Diana took a letter out of one to read it. Blue eyes darted across the page as she read. Diana was soon violently shaking.
"Momma, what does it say?"
"Oh my nines. This can't be true."
"What can't be true?"
Diana threw the paper down before pulling another one out. She kept repeating the process with five different letters before leaning back into her chair.
"Girls, there you are. Anna told me you two were in the library. Diana, are you okay?"
Akko came into the office with Haruka in her arms, worry written all over the omega's face at the sight of Diana's face.
"Akko, read this." The alpha handed her a letter to read. Akko quickly read it before her mouth dropped open and she looked up at Diana.
"This...can't..how is this possible?" Diana mumbled, face pressed into her hands.
"Girls, why don't you go outside to play. Take your dragons. Custor will watch over you."
Alice and Akio both jumped down and ran out the door. Akko bent down to Diana's eye level. "Honey, what do you think this could possibly be about?"
"I don't know Akko. I don't know. But why? Why hide this from me?"
"I'm sure Bernadette and Liz had a reason why."
"I hope so, Akko. I hope so because this is huge, so huge for me."
Dinner was a quiet affair this evening as the family ate. Diana was just stabbing at her food, hardly eating anything.
"Honey, we nag at Haruka and the twins for playing with their food. We have to follow our own rules," Akko laid a hand on her wife's bicep.
"I'm sorry, I'm just not hungry at the moment."
"Diana, please eat. It is very important for your health especially since you forgot to eat lunch this afternoon," Beatrix chided Diana. Diana slouched in her chair, staring into Beatrix's blue eyes. Akko giggled behind her hand. Anna arrived with dessert.
"Anna, dessert wasn't on the menu tonight."
"I know Duchess but the chef figured it would be a nice treat after the day you had. I also think it's time we told you the truth."
All Cavendish and dragon's heads peeked up.
"The truth? Truth about what, Anna? What have my mothers been hiding? Does everyone know? Does Aunt Daryl know? Did my grandparents and Aunt Amelia know about this ?"
"Ohhhhhhh mystery," The twins turned to look at each other. They both quickly shut up when Akko shot them a glare.
"I know you recently found the letters in your mother Bernadette's chest about another child. One that Lady Bernadette had been talking to for many years up until her death."
"Yes. Did my mother have an illegitimate child with someone else before she met my mother?"
"No. Liz was Lady Bernadette's one and only love."
"So who is this other child?"
"Diana, you have a twin."
"A twin!?"
"I guess twins truly do run in this family," Akko whispered as she spoon fed Haruka.
"Yes. By the name of Diane Cavendish."
"I have a twin? I have a sister? But wait, why were we separated?"
"It wasn't easy on your mothers. It broke their heart to separate the two of you."
"But why?"
"There was a prophecy created at the time of Beatrix the Gentle. She had previously lived on an island that was harassed by a terrifying beast known as the Chimera."
"I remember hearing about him. A real piece of work."
"The Chimera was terrorizing the island. So before Beatrix left to help Blue, she sealed him into a tomb to prevent him from ever escaping the island without her there to stop him. Before she left, she sent down a message. A prophecy if you will. If two Cavendish twins are born, one alpha and the other an
omega, then he will arise again with the pull of a sword. The twins will bring death and destruction onto the island and possibly the world."
"But why were they separated, Anna?" Akko asked.
"Because when Diana turned two, she was revealed to be an alpha. Diane, your sister, was an omega. You two were the first opposites since the time of Beatrix. Your mother and Daryl were both omegas. Your grandfather was a single child and an alpha."
"We fulfilled part of the prophecy."
"Correct. Your grandfather on Lady Bernadette's side offered to take Diane to the island to raise her. Your parents kept you here. You two cried so hard for each other when we had to separate for the final time."
"Anna, did my mothers love Diane?"
"Oh honey, they loved you both so much. Bernadette kept in touch with Diane because she couldn't imagine not being able to talk with her daughter. I'm sure Diane was happy to see those letters from her mother. Diana, we had to so that the Chimera may never appear again. The power of the dragon king may be the only thing that could destroy him forever. For now, it helped prevent his coming."
"But we have the dragon king's power now," Akko finally broke the silence. "I'm the priestess. Diana has his blood. We can stop him together."
Akko placed her hand on top of Diana's. Diana smiled at her wife.
"You were just talking about a vacation weren't you?"
"I don't know how much of a vacation this would be but it may be nice to just get away for a bit. Maybe stop an evil from destroying an island and wreaking havoc on the world. A normal weekend adventure."
"I don't think that is very wise my ladies. Your parents separated you for a reason. Maybe you should keep it that way."
"Anna, I just found out I have a twin sister. I want to find her. To get to know her. Akko's right, we have the dragon king's power now. We may be able to stop this Chimera."
"Yes Milady, I understand. Maybe it would actually be good for you two to meet. Take the chest. It has all the letters Diane had ever written. Your mother kept them as a memento. It may help you feel like you are connected to her."
"Thank you Anna."
Akko walked into her room after making sure the dragon den was taken care of. Diana was sitting on their bed with Alice and Akio on both sides of her and little Haruka in her lap, reading the letters. Akko smiled, her heart warming at the sight. Eight dragons slept in a little makeshift bed at the edge of the bed.
"Shouldn't you girls be in bed?"
"We are in bed mommy," Akio piped up, holding Hikaru close to her.
"You silly girls. I meant you should be in your own beds."
Akko slipped into bed, moving Akio over a bit and picking up Haruka. She made cooing noises at her baby, pressing her nose against Haruka's as her baby giggled.
"So, what are my favorite girls reading for a story tonight?
"Just reading some of my sister's letters she wrote to mother. I can't believe it though, I have a sister. A baby sister."
"Who said you were the oldest?"
"Anna. I asked her later when you were down in the dragon dens. I was born first."
"Oh my nines. Diana, you are too much." Akko hid in the alpha's shoulder as she laughed.
"That's why you love me." Diana tilted her head to kiss Akko.
"I want a kiss," Akio pouted.
"Yeah, me too," Alice shared in that pout. Akko and Diana shared a look before Diana scooped her daughters into her arms.
"Come on my little gremlins, it's bedtime."
"But momma, I'm not tired. I want to know more about our new aunt," Alice peeked at her mother.
"I think it's late and we have plans tomorrow."
"That's right. It's the anniversary of the defeat of the hydra."
"Then you better go to sleep or else you will be tired tomorrow and can't celebrate."
"Night mom."
"Give me kisses girls," Akko got up to join her wife to put Haruka in bed and the twins. Eris jumped from the bed and walked behind them, soon climbing into Haruka's baby crib.
Both parents kissed their daughters goodnight and even set their baby into her crib and Eris curled up around the baby.
Diana yawned as she laid back into the bed. Akko curled up into Diana's side. "Have things always been this interesting with you Akko?"
"Hehe, maybe. To think you have a twin sister. I wonder what she is like? Is she like you or will she be completely different?"
"It will be interesting to meet her. I'm excited, I want to go out there now and look for her."
"Where is this island?"
"If I remember, it was in the middle of the ocean near the coast of Luna Nova. But it's been years."
Blue's jaws snapped as he yawned. Diana and Akko both looked at him. "Wait, you were at the island before?"
"Yes. But Shiro and I had arrived after Beatrix sealed the Chimera. I remember hearing stories of him from her. Kind of an asshole from what I could gather."
"So, do you think we can maybe defeat the Chimera?" Diana asked as she stared at the ceiling.
"Babe, we defeated the hydra. I think this Chimera will be a walk in the park. Blue and I have all of our
power. You have some of his power. I think we can kill him for good."
"Unless, we bring my sister here. We could have her live here."
"What if she has a family of her own?"
"Then they can live with us. I hope she is married to a good alpha at least. I wonder what my grandfather is like. Is he like grandpa Fergus?"
"I hope so. I like him."
"They like you too. They were so happy I married you."
"Diana, go to sleep. We can talk more later. Good night, I love you."
The blonde watched her wife fall asleep quickly. She smiled down at the woman who had given her hope when she thought she'd lost it all when her mothers died.
"Good night my love. I love you too."
