The Adventures of Joe the Bear

AN: Been a while since I posted a fanfic here, been so busy with other stuff but I'm glad I can start my first ever story featuring my OC Joe the Bear who's on the thumbnail and give him some awesome adventures.

This setting is based off the sonic IDW comics so you'll see characters like Tangle, Whisper, and right now Rough and Tumble. Enjoy ^^

Chapter 1: Encounters of the Smelly Variety

Sonic The Hedgehog, the fastest thing alive that's saved the planet time and time again from the wrath of the evil Doctor Eggman. Together with his friends, they ended the Eggman Empire's reign on the planet, and most recently saved the entire planet from a plague known as the metal virus. Peace had finally returned to the planet, and the blue blur was free to relax and adventure wherever he liked.

But Sonic isn't the only adventurer in the world, this isn't the story about the heroic hedgehog or any of his friends for that matter. This is the story about the sky blue bear in a blue hoodie walking through the field. He smiled, head bopping to the music being played on his headphones.

"Talk about a nice day. I'm glad I didn't have to worry about any rain on the way here." He grinned as he adjusted his glasses. The bear continued as he looked to see the set of hills along the way. "Barricade Town should be just over those hills. I hope my gear was delivered there safely."

Two strange creatures soon flew out from under the bear's hoodie, a yellow creature shaped as a lightning bolt with eyes, the other a purple swirl with a beast-like mouth. They gave off cheerful cries in a strange dialect but the bear seemed to get the gist of what they said.

"Yeah, I can't wait to play. I'm getting excited just thinking about it." The bear grinned as his excitement grew even more. "Alright, how about we have a race to get there? Last one there's a rotten egg!"

With the two creatures cheering in agreement, he quickly began to dash up the hills as fast as he could. This is Joe the Bear, a DJ that enjoyed traveling the world and playing his music for all to hear. He enjoyed the adventure of seeing new things, and with the company of his Wisp partners he never felt lonely.

"Come on, keep up guys! I'm already a hill ahead of… huh?" Joe quickly pulled the breaks and stopped as he noticed something to his right. He quickly recognized the humanoid machines as a set of Badniks, Eggman's personal army of robots. "What the… Eggman's robots? What are they doing here? Are they gonna attack the town?"

Looking back to the small group of Badniks, Joe grinned as he reached back and pulled out a lightning Wispon. "Hehehe, well what're we waiting for? Let's have a little fun! C'mon, Light!"

Hearing its name, the yellow Lightning Wisp flew and inserted itself into Joe's Wispon, powering it up with it's natural energy. Joe rushed after the group of Badniks he saw and quickly made his entrance atop the hill.

"Alright ya buckets of scrap, get ready to get… oh!" His eyes widened as he noticed the robots he was following led him to a much larger group. And each one set their sights on him. "There are a lot more of you than I thought…" Joe chuckled nervously, but his determination never faltered against the small army as he raised his Wispon over his head. "Well good to know I have a good crowd! Lemme help whip ya into shape!"

Joe swung his Wispon and unleashed a whip of lightning that lashed through several Badniks at once. The bear charged through them, dashing towards the center of the crowd he swung again and destroyed another dozen of robots. A few hammer badniks would charge in weapons swinging, but Joe quickly dodged out of the way jumping on top of one to tease them.

"What's wrong? Too fast for ya? Come on, it's not like I'm Sonic." The bear laughed as the hammer bot flung him high into the air, but Joe was calm as he thrust out his left hand. He shot out a grappling wire from his wrist which was attached to one of the Badniks and found himself being pulled in its direction. "But here's something I learned from watching him!"

As he dove down at high speed, Joe rolled into Sonic's signature ball form and bounced from one robot to another destroying them like a pinball in a machine. The moment he flew into the air again, he returned to normal and swung his lightning whip to destroy the remaining bots.

"And that's tilt! Joe wins with a perfect score!" He landed with a bow and gave a high five to his Wisp partners. "Great job as always, Light. Next time we'll put you in the spotlight, Void."

Joe looked around but found no other signs of Badniks in the area. "Looks like that was all of them too, meaning we just saved Barricade Town from being attacked. Let's go and…!?" As the three reveled in their victory, the ground suddenly began to shake under Joe. "Huh? W-What's this shaking coming from?"

The hill he stood on began to break and from out of a massive hole came out a giant robotic drill worm. The sudden surprise caught Joe off guard as he was unable to escape. "Oh man!" Before he knew it, the bear began to plummet deep into the pit the worm had made.

"Ngh…" Joe groaned, his body aching as he fell on his back. He looked around and found nothing but pitch black darkness around him. "Ugh, I can't see a thing. Light? Void? Where are you guys?"

He could see a purple and yellow light reflecting on his glasses, the two Wisps soon flew down and looked over Joe with worried expressions. "I'm ok guys, don't worry. At least I've got some light with you guys around." The two chirped in agreement as the bear got to his feet. "That was a heck of a Super Badnik. And it made such a big hole too. Light, can you brighten it up some more?"

The lightning Wisp gave a response and flew upwards, focusing its energy to brighten the hole with a big ball of electricity. Joe's vision began to clear and he looked upwards to see the hole he fell from. "Whoa, that was a pretty big fall. I think I can climb back with the grapple wire but… wait a second…" Looking closer towards the darkness, Joe quickly noticed that the darkness came from another hole in front of him. "A tunnel… isn't that the direction to Barricade town? What're those Badniks doing underground?"

Joe couldn't help feeling a tad worried with what was going on, he could climb back to the surface to warn the town of whatever danger was coming. But he could be too late if he did that. "Okay guys, let's check out the tunnel." He suggested to the wisps who gave their own sounds of concern. "I know, but we'll be careful. Sides, we might have some more fun along the way. I'm counting on you guys to light the way."

The two wisps gave a salute and led the bear through the tunnel with their glowing bodies lighting the way. The tunnel was large due to the drill worm's size, and from its vastness it seemed it had been burrowing underground for a while. "The more we go through this hole, the more I can't help feeling worried. What the heck could that Super Badnik be doing here?" Joe contemplated his thoughts when the familiar sound of machines being smashed caught his ears. He looked in the direction in front of him and could see small lights from explosions as well. "Looks like we're not the only ones who got stuck down here! Let's go guys, someone might need help!"

Several lights shined further inside the tunnel as Badniks were slammed into the walls, several small animals popped out and ran as they were freed from their robotic cages. And more would break free as a large cream colored skunk continued to slam his fist into the robots. He snarled and blocked an upcoming punch and countered with enough force to destroy both two the Badnik and the two others behind it.

"Hah! That all you guys got! Come on!" The skunk's bravado was met with more Badniks coming from behind, but just as he was readying to fight a wire flew by his shoulder and stuck to one of the robots. "What the?"

"Coming through!" Joe called as flew over the skunk, he quickly turned into ball form and smashed the Badnik, bouncing along the tunnel and destroying the rest with ease before landing on his feet. "Whew! Glad I could make it on time! Hey, are you-whoa!?" He quickly dodged as the skunk tried to deliver a punch. "What was that for? I just saved you, ya know?"

"And who said I needed your help, huh?" The mohawk sporting skunk questioned readying his fist for another attack when the two dodged a laser shot. Several more Badniks were marching toward them with laser arm cannons. "Oh great, more of 'em now!"

"Don't worry, I'll mow them down. It's your turn, Void. Let's… !?" Joe reached behind back for his weapon, but his eyes widened when the sudden heft of his Wispons were gone. "No. No! No! No!" He looked frantically along his body, even taking off his hoodie to see if they were there to no avail. "Where'd my Wispons go! I had them with me before when…!?" The bear groaned when he remembered his fall and the sudden flash of his Wispons falling onto the drill worm's body came to mind. "Aw man! That stupid worm has my Wispons!"

"You done talking to yourself? Or are we gonna fight here!?" The skunk exclaimed, dodging another laser blast.

"Well, I still promised you a turn didn't I? I'm never used to it but we've got no choice." Joe sighed as he looked back to the purple Wisp. "Void, let's do this! Lend me your power!"

Void gave a cackle as it followed Joe into the fray, the Nega-Wisp turned into light and fused with the bear's body transforming him into a ball of darkness that soon began to form a monstrous mouth and eyes. The Badniks fired their cannons but the lasers would be absorbed by the black hole like body creeping towards them, and soon the robots would be sucked in and destroyed until nothing else was left but a flock of tiny birds flying out of the black hole's orbit.

Soon the transformation ended and Joe reverted back to his original self with Void at his side. "Thanks, Void. Using Wisp powers like that gets me wonky, but it definitely does the trick. Now that that's over, how about we-yikes!" Joe quickly avoided another punch as the skunk continued his onslaught, he narrowly avoided them all before using his wire to distance himself a few feet away. "Can you stop trying to punch me!? Who are you anyway?"

"So you wanna know huh? Alright, then lemme tell ya who we are?" The big skunk grinned as he flexed his muscles in a dynamic pose. "You lookin to scrap? Then get ready to crumble! By the dynamic duo of... uhh… Tumble!"

"... What?" Joe and the Wisps stared at the skunk rather confused by what they saw. Even the skunk named Tumble groaned at his performance.

"Ugh… it just ain't the same without Rough!" He huffed in annoyance.

"Okay… Tumble right? Well if you're done attacking me…"

"Oh I ain't done in the slightest! Now get over here and lemme smash ya!" The skunk growled, stomping after Joe.

"Whoa whoa! Can you hold on a minute? You're smashing the Badniks too right? So we're on the same side!" Joe assured him. "You mentioned someone named Rough right? I'm guessing they were with you when you got stuck in here?"

"Yeah! Bro and I were tryin ta get to town when that worm split us up in this huge hole. Now I'm tryin ta find him when all those bots got in the way." Tumble explained.

"Well, with all these Badniks around… why don't we work together to find him? I'll happily help if you stop trying to smash me?" Joe suggested. "What do ya say? Oh, I'm Joe by the way. Were you guys coming to town for the party?"

"A party? There was a party?" Tumble asked.

"There's gonna be, and I'm the DJ! It's gonna be awesome, just you wait!"

"Whatever, let's just hurry and find Rough." The skunk began to make his way forward, leading the two further through the tunnel as more lights illuminated the way. "I wonder what this big hole was for in the first place?"

"This is more of a tunnel, how we got here in the first place was the real hole. Still… why would they need to put lights down here?" Joe wondered. "And the fact that regular Badniks are here. Maybe this is some kind of underground attack on the town. But why though? What's the point of Eggman doing that?"

"Well… the town is full of Wisps and Wispons. They distribute it to other places too." Tumble remembered.

"Aha! That's why! He's trying to destroy the town to limit Wispon distribution!" Joe exclaimed. "Alright, all the more reason to stop these bozos! That, and there's no way I'm letting all my gear in town get destroyed!"

"Well I'm gonna find Rough, you can do what you want." Tumble simply continued on, not bothering to pay attention to the bear.

"You could add to the conversation more, ya know?" Joe rolled his eyes and noticed something about the skunk, noticeably how his tail was cut short unlike normal skunks. "Say, what happened to your tail? Did it get like that from being attacked? Or was it…!?" He stopped walking as he noticed Tumble turn to face him, he couldn't help a chill down his spine as he saw the skunk glare at him with piercing red eyes welling in tears. "Whoa um… sorry! D-Didn't mean to bring up any bad memories… I won't mention it again. Exyay aynay alltay…"

Meanwhile, further in the tunnel. A cream and teal colored skunk with a full tail snuck through a large open area where Badniks were preparing to attack the city with weapons and other robots. The skunk, Rough, surveyed the area and tried to look for a way out but there were no openings to escape. "Man, where the heck is Tumble? Smashing these guys would be a lot easier with him around. Alright, first I've gotta get outta here, and then I'll…!?" A sudden ringing came from above as a bat bot saw the skunk and signaled the others. "Oh crap!"

The sound of the ringing echoed through the tunnels until it finally caught Joe and Tumble's attention. "You hear that? That must be where all the Badniks are!"

"Hang on, Bro! I'm coming!" Tumble rushed towards the action but was pulled back by Joe.

"Whoa! Hang on a second!" Joe told him. "If we're gonna start a fight, the least we can do is make a show of it right?"

"Yeah? Oh yeah… I get what you're saying."

Rough zig zagged about, dodging several lasers and bullets that flew his way before punching a pair of Egg Pawns out of his way. The skunk spin dashed towards the center, making donuts as he unleashed a smelly smokescreen to hide himself, but even that wasn't enough to stop the Badniks from coming closer.

"Aww man! What's it take for you guys to leave me alone!?" Rough exclaimed.

"Don't worry, Rough! We've got your back!"

"That you, Tumble? Wait… we?" The skunk followed the response as his smoke screen began to disappear, and there he found his much taller brother posing with an unfamiliar bear.

"Better stay on your toes, cause we're ready to rumble!"

"You're about to feel the beats of…"

"Joe and Tumble!" They exclaimed in perfect unison.

"Hehehe, now that's how you make an intro!" Joe grinned.

"Hey, don't be doin our thing with other people Tumble!" Rough argued.

"Sorry bro…"

"Apologies for later, let's help him out!" The bear shot his grapple wire at one of the bat bots and flew up to smash his foot into its face. He quickly jumped off as the bot flew into others beside it and exploded on impact. Joe landed in the middle of the fray and stood behind Rough. "Hi there, Joe the Bear. It's nice to meet you!"

"Who asked you to help, huh?" Rough argued as he punched away an Egg Pawn.

"I asked myself, that's all the permission I needed." Joe shot back, kicking his own pawns away.

Tumble soon joined in the fray, smashing through the crowd of Badniks until he managed to join Joe and his brother. "There's a whole buncha them left. What do we do, Rough?"

"What do you mean, bro? We bash through them like we always do!" The smaller skunk answered. "We're the toughest mercenaries for a reason after all!"

"Yeah, let's take'em out then!" Tumble agreed.

"I like your enthusiasm guys. But I think I have a better way to take these guys out instantly." Joe suggested.

"You gonna use your Wisp pal again?" The bigger skunk asked.

"Not this time, not enough space to keep you guys out of Void's range. So time for my other partner to help!" Joe's call caused Light to pop out of his hoodie, following the bear as he hopped off a robot into the air. "Let's do this, Light!"

The Lightning Wisp shined brighter as it entered Joe's body, soon the power grew and transformed him into a large lightning bolt that shot around the entire tunnel. Electrocuting every Badnik with enough power for them to blow up on the spot, as the last one was destroyed the bear shot down in front of the two brothers and reverted back to normal albeit a bit woozy.

"Whew, twice in one day. Least it worked, great job Light." Joe beamed as he high fived the yellow wisp.

"Well that took the fun outta this." Tumble huffed.

"Yeah, but at least they're gone. Now let's get outta here before something worse happens!" Rough began to add as the tunnel began to shake violently around them.

"You just had to jinx it, didn't ya?" Joe groaned.

The three could feel the shaking getting stronger as the source of it all, the giant drill worm appeared from a newly formed tunnel.

"Oh man, this thing again!?" The shorter brother exclaimed.

"We've gotta stop that thing from attacking the town!" Joe insisted. "Come on, let's take it out!"

"Yeah? And why should we?" Tumble questioned.

The moment the worm rose above them, its drill opened to reveal a large laser charging its energy to fire. "Does that answer your question? Move!" Joe quickly shot his wire and flung himself to grab the brothers before the laser fired in their direction. "I wasn't expecting mouth lasers with that big drill in the way, we've gotta get rid of that thing for sure!"

"He's right bro, let's smash this worm's head in!" Tumble cracked his knuckles at the ready.

"Alright then. Let's show this big bag of bolts what we can do!"

The three split up, dodging the lasers being fired from the robot's mouth, but even as they circled to its sides, it continued to fire with turrets around its body; Joe slid and dodged out of the way of its bullets, shooting a wire to the ceiling to swing into the air and divert its fire. With the turrets focused on the flying bear, Rough and Tumble quickly charged in to smash the turrets to bits.

"We've gotta find a way to really take it out! Wait a sec, is that…?" As he continued to swing about, Joe noticed something shining along its back. His eyes widened as he realized the shine was coming from his two wispons. "I knew you had them! Light! Void! Let's go!"

Joe shot his grapple wire and pulled himself towards the worm's back, he reached out for the closest Wispon but the worm began to shake about, it rose its body upwards and began to drill into the ceiling taking the bear with it.

"Hey! Where ya goin 'without us!?" Rough argued.

"Don't leave us here!" Tumble added.

The two mohawk brothers quickly rushed in, grabbing on to the worm's body just in time as it dug upwards to the surface. Those in Barricade Town were simply enjoying the peace they had when the ground began to violently shake.

"W-What is that? Are we under attack?" A dog on the lookout tried to keep his balance as the shaking grew stronger, it wasn't long until the drill worm burst from the ground rising in front of the town entrance. "E-Everyone! Eggman's attacking! Ready your Wispons!"

Joe held on to the worm's back as tight as he could when he noticed it opened up its mouth, the laser inside began to charge as it pointed directly at the town. "Oh no you don't!" With Light already inside, he swung his lightning Wispon and whipped its head upwards. With the worm facing the sky, Joe shot his wire at the robot's face and began to swing around his head, his wire tightening around the drill mouth until he finally managed to close it shut. But the worm continued its charge, and the wire was beginning to break as it struggled to open its mouth. "Shoot, it's not gonna last. I need something to keep its mouth shut!"

"Then you've come to the right guys for the job!" Rough smirked as he and his Tumble ran up the worm's sides. "If ya need something smashed, don't just moan and mumble!"

"Just call on the toughest, baddest bros around!"

"Rough and Tumble!" The two skunks joined in unison as they unleashed a flying dropkick and punch respectively on both sides of the worm's mouth, crushing the drill with enough strength to keep it shut.

The three quickly moved from the laser's range and the moment it fired, the laser would bounce back through the worm's body. Shooting through it until finally exploding. The townspeople would exit the town, watching in awe as their three heroes stood before them in rather dynamic poses.

"Wahoo! That was awesome!" Joe cheered. "That was my first time fighting a Super Badnik, and it was such an awesome finish too! You two are amazing!"

"Hah! You got that right!" Rough beamed.

"Nobody can beat us! Nobody!" Tumble added.

"Excuse me, but were you the one who stopped that robot?" The dog from before asked Joe.

"Yeah, it was digging holes underneath the town, making tunnels for Badniks. It looked like they were gonna sneak in and get rid of all your Wispon distributions." Joe explained. "Don't worry though, we got rid of all the Badniks underground. And the tunnels should've buried themselves thanks to the explosion the worm made. So no one can come through that way again."

"Oh thank goodness, thank you so much!" The dog thanked him. "Wait a moment, aren't you the DJ we hired for the party?"

"That's right! And now we have another reason to celebrate!" Joe smiled, but his smile quickly disappeared as he saw the rest of the townspeople surround Rough and Tumble with Wispons at the ready. "H-Hey! What're you guys doing? They helped me beat that robot, remember?"

"And after all we did to save this crummy town." Tumble huffed.

"And how do we know you're not the ones who led the Badniks here?" A bird provoked.

"We won't be fooled by you two a second time!"

"Wait, I can attest that they were helping me fight the Badniks. They're not bad, I promise!" Joe assured them.

"Don't let them fool you!" The dog pleaded. "Those two once took over our town for themselves during the Eggman War. They're absolute tyrants, and they even tried to take over a second time!"

"Is that true?" He asked the two skunks.

"Yeah, and what if it is?" Rough answered. "Nobody's gonna stop us from having our fun!"

"We do whatever we want, whenever we want. And nobody's gonna tell us otherwise!" Tumble added. "And we'll smash anyone who gets in our way."

"I see… well that's definitely a shame." The bear sighed as held out his Wispon, but he didn't attack them. "If everyone doesn't mind, I ask that you let Rough and Tumble go."

"Let them go? But they're criminals!" The dog accused.

"I know they are, but today they helped in saving Barricade Town. Sure it might not have been their intention, but they still did it regardless." Joe explained. "You don't have to let them inside, or even be nice to them. But can't you at least do this kindness for them?"

The townspeople looked to each other then back to the skunk brothers, their Wispons were still raised but they soon moved away from them which surprised Rough and Tumble.

"Thank you for saving our town, now please leave."

"That's it? You're just gonna let us go?" Rough questioned them.

"Only because Joe asked us to. So you should thank him for that." The dog responded.

The two skunks looked upon Joe rather confusedly, the sudden kindness given to them was strange but they weren't about to overlook it with all the weapons pointed at them; Rough grabbed his brother and pulled him down the hill, they glanced at the bear for a moment before they were out of sight.

"Sorry you guys can't join the party! But don't worry, I'll play a song specifically for you two!" Joe called out to them in the distance and smiled back to the townspeople. "Thank you again, everyone. Now, let's get this party started!"

Rough and Tumble sat atop a hill a good distance away from the town that night, they couldn't see what went on in the town, they could still see the lights and the music that played. "Talk about a weird guy, wasn't expecting him to just let us go like that." The shorter skunk admitted.

"I wonder when he's gonna play that song for us?" Tumble wondered.

"Bro, come on! You honestly think he'd just do that for us?" Rough shot back.

"Why not? Like you said, Joe's a weird guy."

"Yeah, he sure is… and since we're not in prison again, I guess we owe him one for that." The skunk leaned against a tree as they continued to listen to the music play. "Let's get out of here once the music's over, I wanna hear what kinda song he'll play for us too."
