Mariko stood on the main deck of the ship that transported her household back to the mainland after almost 20 years of living on The Island of Glass. The Uzumaki clan in exile had thrived there on a peaceful and prosperous island. She was lucky in a sense. The commercial expedition that she and two of her younger siblings had been sent on in secret, to increase the wealth of the clan, were what allowed them to survive the destruction and following massacre of Uzu. The last contact with her blood on the mainland, had been with her baby sister Kushina Uzumaki, as she detailed the experience of her first pregnancy. Kushina had thrived as the 9 tails Jinchuriki in Konoha, even marrying their Hokage. Then communications had been cut off, about two weeks before Kushina was supposed to give birth. Kushina wrote that it was a security measure.
Mariko had wanted to return in enough force to check on her baby sister, but her husband, Anzo, had wisely, though after a bop on the head from his fiery tempered wife, suggested that no matter, they had to wait until their children were old enough to live on their own.
And Mariko would have waited, if she had not encountered rumors from the mainland. As merchants who had been in Konoha brought whispers of a demon child named Uzumaki in Konoha who the powers in the villain protected even though "the child had transformed into a fox and killed hundreds 5 years prior". It still took almost 2 years of planning to arrange for this expedition. For Mariko new that she had to return in force. Her blood, likely Kushina's son, would not be allowed to leave Konoha because he was the 9 tails Jinchuriki. And since he as not a full blooded Uzumaki, he could not survive an extraction, even if they could find another host for the 9 tails. Uzumakis were the only known bloodline that had the chakra potential to host the Kyuubi. So to do her sister honor, she and her family had to leave Glass and essentially establish a branch of her clan in Konoha. Though in retrospect her father should have agreed to settle in Konoha, but the call of the ocean was too much for much of the clan. Well, while she liked water, the large inland lakes were more than enough for her, and she knew her husband and his nephew were powerful enough create artificial water ways on the new Uzumaki clan grounds that she would choose in Konoha. Her information gathering had been thorough enough. Mariko had passed on leadership of the Glass Uzumaki's to her next youngest sibling. And then she, along with her husband, children and household set off to save her nephew.
