A car crash played over and over in her dreams. It went on forever as a constant reminder that if or when she woke up a new reality awaited her. She wasn't ready yet. There was a longing within her that wished she'd never wake up and struggled holding on to the dream and the outside world trying to rip it away.
'beep…beep…beep…'
Running footsteps are heard as she slowly began to open her eye lids. She blinked a few times to adjust her dull sight. What was once all whiteness turned into a typical hospital room. Judging by more specific details based on the size and a large window leading out into the hallway to be monitored. She'd guessed ICU Unit.
Looking directly forward she caught a soap opera on a small tv mounted on the wall. Good thing the volume was down as she couldn't stand the TV dramas. She tried to find the strength to sit up in the bed and while clamping the weight down on both arms she immediately stopped and hissed in pain.
The beeping noise in the hallway had come to a stop. She hoped that the patient down the hall was doing okay. A stranger had walked into a room. She was a nurse with a clipboard in hand. "You're finally awake. Glad to have you back with us miss Taylor." The nurse said with a consoled smile. "I wouldn't try to move your arms around just yet. You sprained one and the other in the cast we needed to perform surgery on."
It all came back to the girl that her name is Taylor. Taylor Alessandra Carson. It was like she was remembering everything for the first time. Taylor glanced down at both arms as she slouched over. Her right was bruised and the other had on a thick cast that made it impossible to bend any tendons. She looked back up at the nurse. "How long was I out for?"
"Three weeks and four days. You had quite a lot of injuries, which included a minor swelling to the brain, and you've suffered a huge loss that we decided to induce you medically into a coma." The nurse explained while switching out her patient's IV bag.
Everything flooded back all at once for Taylor. The argument she and her mom had while being behind the wheel of the car, not stopping at a yellow light that was turning red, and the truck that struck the car on her mother's side. Afterwards everything went black. She felt sick in the pit of her stomach.
"My mother," Taylor gulped, she pictured the last time her mom had looked at her. So much disappointment in her gleaming eyes after Taylor made an unthinkable and irrational decision. "She's dead, isn't she?"
The nurse had fret written on her face when she gradually looked over to her. She nodded. Changing the subject, "Your grandmother is downstairs in the cafeteria. I'll let her know that you're awake." The nurse showed her way out.
Taylor is alone in the boring ICU room again. She glanced around some more and experienced a build up of tears ready to escape. On the left there were some get well flowers and balloons already loosing air in them. Some she could spot were from friends of hers. It didn't feel right. She was here and her mother wasn't.
For the past few days, the nurses wanted to keep a closer eye on Taylor and performed a couple of more x-rays making sure Taylor's brain scans were good before releasing her. It was nice having her grandmother Nancy there. It had been a while since the woman lived up north in Massachusetts and Taylor lived in New Orleans. One day a doctor came to her room with a release form. At last, Taylor thought.
She didn't like hospitals and was grateful that she could finally leave. She filled the form promptly and agreed that she would go to therapy sessions when she made the decision to move north with her grandmother. Taylor could use her arms easily now without too much pain. Some evident pain was still there but it's been durable after moving around more. Her legs were numb getting up after a month of complete bed rest.
Taylor was brought normal clothing, a t-shirt, and some jeans to change into. Looking into the bathroom mirror had been the first since before the accident. She felt terrified to even look but did.
Taylor thought the first thing she'd do when she got home was take a long shower. Her black hair had lost volume and is greasy. She also couldn't look away from the scaring in a few places on her face and a bruised chin. It was later explained that it was glass particles from the windshield of the car that cut her face up. With the ointment they gave her the scarring should clear up in a couple of months.
A sickening feeling surpassed over Taylor as she and her grandmother drove back in a rental car to her now empty home. A home she'd grew in most of her life now a memory she couldn't wait to get away from. She and her grandmother had an early flight to catch in the morning. Some of Taylor's things will have to be U-hauled by truck. Taylor wasn't much to attach to materialism. Most she'll donate to friends or charity.
After taking a shower, her friends Kaleb and Sarah came by to help Taylor sort through her stuff. Taylor had picked out five outfits to fit into a suitcase along with small hygiene products. For her carryon bag Taylor had her laptop, a book, and essential makeup.
Before leaving the hospital, Taylor's cast was changed out for a thinner flexible one. It allowed her to use the tendons in her fingers more.
"Where is the funeral for your mom going to be held?" Kaleb asked curiously.
Taylor opened and slid a box over to make room by getting into her closet and took a few of her clothes from their hangers down. Her legs were still numbed and tried her best without falling over. "There won't be a funeral, only a condolence page. Her ashes are being sent to my grandmother's house."
"Don't you listen Kaleb?! She just said several minutes-" Sarah spouted.
While her friends argued Taylor tuned their voices out. She eventually left her room entering the hallway where straight ahead was her mother's room. She turned the doorknob to go in and switch the light on. The aroma in the room filled of her mom's scent. It was unlike any other and Taylor knew she couldn't capture it in a bottle and take it with her.
However, she could do something. On her mom's vanity chair hung a shawl. Taylor knew it was her mother's favorite, so she picked it up from the seat and held it close to her chest. Tears welted up in her eyes and she released them in a blink.
It's my fault, Taylor replayed in her mind over and over.
Morning came soon and even though Taylor never slept she was grateful for her friends who stayed with her throughout the night.
"Promise to call and text us every day, and that includes facetiming." Sarah pulled Taylor into a warm and tight embrace in the driveway after the U-Haul arrived. "I'm so sorry."
Taylor hugged her friend back and did the same with Kaleb after he helped put away the suitcases in the trunk of the rental car. Taylor was feeling sorry that she won't be able to join her friends for their senior year of high school. She will be starting at a different one with a whole new body of students.
Taylor's friends left to go back home, and she followed her grandmother getting into the rental car. Her grandmother had handed an envelope over to Taylor after she situated herself.
The girl analyzed the envelope for a few seconds before letting it slip between her fingers taking it. "What's this?" Taylor questioned.
Her grandmother turned the key in the ignition starting the car. "It is your mother's Will letter and legal assets since the house is going to have to be sold."
Taylor understood but wasn't going to read it yet. She'd no idea her mom had took the time to write a Will. She was still young only being thirty-nine and wasn't ill.
They made it to the airport and once in the terminal after going through the rental car service and TSA Taylor grabbed a quick breakfast. She hadn't been eating much and this time felt the need to get something into her obvious empty stomach.
After about an hour it was time to board a one way stop to Boston, Massachusetts. Taylor's grandmother had to shake her awake as she'd fallen asleep from the lack there of. Taylor gradually stood up as her legs still wasn't used to working after sitting for a long period of time. She needed to remember to constantly move them even when sitting down.
She made it onto the plane with out falling, big plus, and found her seat. She thanked her grandmother for booking a seat next to the window as she loved them. She missed her mom so much and she was going to miss her friends. Looking out the window when the plane took off and the ground got smaller, and she couldn't see her beloved city no more Taylor wondered what new journey awaited her.
