Hello! New fic, I hope you will like it!

Disclaimer: I do not own Marvel. I own Addison Carter. Mutants and the Xavier Institute will be in the story and I will take elements of the movies for this story, but I didn't want to put it in the crossover section because we'll see more of the MCU and anyway now they were bought by Disneys...let's say they're all living happily in the same universe. Basically, the first two X-Men movies have happened but not the third one because Days of Future Past. I don't think I will use Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix either.

The story really starts between Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

I hope you'll enjoy!

PS: To any French readers, yes this is a rewrite of my fic 'Agent Carter X' but in English.

October 2011, Washington D.C

Most stories start with a 'once upon a time'. Well, I guess mine could to but it made me sound very old. These stories always end with a happy ending anyway, and mine was far from it. There was no peace. There were just periods of time where the threat was busy threatening other people's life.

There is no peace when you're different.

I was different. My genes mutated from those of a regular human being. I was a mutant. If you're different, people treat you badly and it can push you to do bad choices if you have no one to turn to.

I made bad choices. Lots of them. Then, I thought I could fix my mistakes but ended up making even more bad choices.

Hence why I was in front of Nick Fury in Washington D.C, my arm in a splint, a black eye and stitches at my brow.

"Do you have anything to say?"

"Neo-Hydra," I replied weakly.

"The job is done but the consequences..." He shook his head and I glared at him. "Your grandmother would be disappointed."

"Don't bring her into this Fury. You're only annoyed because I decided to take care of that facility on my own when I turned you down three years ago. I'll turn you down again today if you ask me to join the Avenger Initiative."

"You should be sent to jail for what you've done. Not just you but that Wade Wilson as well." I scoffed.

"He was on your radar as well, wasn't he?" He ignored that.

I was a second-year student in History at the Rochester University, state of New York. I was at a party outside when I noticed a guy I was crushing on leaving on his own. I followed him, hoping to have some time alone with him but it turned out he was spying on some people kidnapping others. They were injected with something.

The boy saw me and kept me from saying anything, quickly revealing he was a SHIELD agent undercover. People were kidnapping mutants. I immediately wanted to help, but the next day they came for me. The agent helped me, but I was shot with a dart.

Then, no power. I was a telekinesist and telepath. I called Wade, a friend I made when I was a teenager, and asked him for help. As he was now a mercenary, having quit the Special Force shortly after we met, he helped us. Eventually, the prisoners were released after SHIELD sent a few people to help, including one called Hawkeye.

The agent died though, taking a blow meant for me. He didn't die immediately, wanting to...finish his mission before but once outside, he passed away. They were quick to ship us to D.C.

"I will give you a deal Addison." I merely raised a brow. "With your past and this, it is pretty obvious that now you're classified as a dangerous individual. If you execute a mission without complaining when the moment comes, then you won't be sent in jail."

"You call that jail, I call that mutant internment camp."

"No matter how you call it, it's still not a dreamy location." I thought about the deal for a few seconds.

"What would this mission be?"

"Deal with Aksel Ivanov when the time comes and join the Avengers without complaining." I groaned.

"It's not even official yet."

"It will be, especially with the situation we just had in New Mexico." I averted my eyes. "I'll make sure that you stay out of the SHIELD's radar, like Wilson, until then."

"You're making me work for freedom then?"

"I see it as community service." I pursed my lips, rolling my eyes.

"Fine, what do I have to lose?"

"Not much," he said. I swallowed the anger bubbling inside of me as he answered a phone. "I see." He hung up and stood up. "Come with me."

"Why?"

"Something you might be interested in seeing." I got up and followed him through a maze of hallways. He stopped in front of a window.

I stopped as well and widened my eyes. If the body trapped in ice was not enough, there was a shield in the room as well. The colors had not faded, not even just a little.

"That is not Captain America in that ice." Fury nodded nonetheless.

"It is him though. The plane crashed and froze."

"But...the crash..."

"He's a super soldier, a plane crash is apparently not enough to kill him."

"The poor guy's gonna have a shock. I mean, it's the twenty-first century..."

"Yeah. We'll transfer him to NY soon." He looked down at me with his one good eye. "We contacted the Institute and Stark." I gaped.

"You did not!"

"Well you can't just go back to your life right now." He walked away and I jogged behind him.

"You can't just keep deciding of my life without my consent Fury!"

"Actually, I can because if you end up branded as an internationally wanted criminal, then your grandmother will come back from the dead to kill me." The elevator doors shut behind me and we went down. "I can't risk you going berserk like after she died."

"I...it won't ha..."

"You infiltrated the Pentagone and helped stealing highly-classified information and killed several people, you're a step away from an internment camp."

"So you admit it's what they are." There was a low growl at the back of his throat. "I get the Institute but Tony? If you're not aware he doesn't give a flying fuck about me!"

"But he is your godfather." I clicked my tongue and the elevator opened.

I could hear voices. I thought I heard Wade's thoughts, wanting to eat chimichangas. Fury opened the door to a room, which looked like a living-room and there they were. Tony and Storm fighting. Jean must have stopped trying to separate them.

"And how exactly are you going to 'get her on the right path'? Because last time I checked, an extremist joined your school and brainwashed her just under your nose and you didn't see shit! She became a terrorist at sixteen when you were supposed to look after her!" Ororo saw red. The sky outside got cloudy, but Tony kept glaring at her.

"That's rich coming from the one who never bothered to call during her entire life or even sent his assistant in his place to funerals! You never cared about her, not even a little bit and you think you can decide what's right or not for her now!? You didn't even look for her or acknowledge her when she was with Aksel!"

"You don't know what I did or didn't do when she was with that madman!"

"You know, 'ohana' means family," Wade whispered to me, now standing next to me. He was badly bruised but after ten years in the US Special Force, he was still fine. "And family means no one is left behind."

"Thanks for the Lilo and Stitch reference Wade." I looked at the two adults fighting. "But does that mean you're my family then?"

"I'm not paying for college Addidi." I rolled my eyes at the nickname.

With a flick of my hand, I forced some distance between them.

"Can you stop fighting?" I droned.

"Hey kid," Tony greeted me, seemingly embarrassed I saw him like that. "So, still playing superhero then? You should know better, especially when you don't have any power." I frowned.

"You don't have any power and still play Iron Man!"

"Yeah, I don't have any power but a bullet proof fully armed suit. What do you have? Your classes schedule?"

"Stark..." Ororo growled but Jean put her hand on her shoulder.

"Are you scolding me right now?"

"Yes, because you could have died Addison!" I blinked.

"Why do you even care now!?" He was taken back at my anger. "The only time you seemed to care about me was when you were dying!"

"I'm the one scolding you, not the other way around!"

"You think I care about being scolded by you!?"

"You're monitored by the SHIELD so you should! Damn it, why didn't you call me instead of him!?" Wade put a hand on his chest when Tony pointed at him, pretending to be offended.

"Maybe because she knew I'd help unlike someone else?" Tony scowled.

"It was discussed already and she will go back to the Institute for a while."

"Fury, who do you think you ar..."

"I don't want to have anything to do with you." He shut up, his brows raising in offense.

"I'm sorry what?"

"I don't want to see or hear from you anymore. You never were present for me and I dealt with it, so stay way!" I caught a glimpse of hurt in his eyes and refused to read his thoughts.

"Fine, have it that way." He left the room. I was soon embraced in Ororo's motherly arms.

"You should have called us," she told me quietly. I didn't react, my arms limp by my sides.

I knew what she meant by this but all I heard was 'he would still be alive'.

2012, Rochester

I gulped as I stared at Iron Man leading the nuke in the wormhole. I had not seen Tony in months, or even heard from him. Pepper told me they would still take care of the financial needs I had but…

Tony disappeared in the wormhole. I was in a class that required a computer and we were all watching the same thing. New York was attacked by aliens but there was a group of people fighting. We all saw and recognized the Hulk, but not the others as the cameramen were too busy running for their lives.

The wormhole was closed.

"What the hell was that?" the guy next to me mumbled in shock.

"So huh...we were attacked by aliens?" another student wondered out loud.

We were free to leave early and I immediately called Fury.

"What can I do for you Carter?"

"Is he...is he alive? Okay?"

"I thought you didn't want anything to do with him anymore?"

"Just answer me," I hissed through gritted teeth.

"He is, against all odds."

"Alright," I said quietly. "Happy you've got your little team now?"

"Happy the situation was solved." He hung up on me.

Once back in my apartment, I watched the news until late in the night. I had texted Pepper to tell her to scream at Tony. She didn't reply but I was sure she was just...busy.

Then, later during the year, close to Christmas, I watched the news to see Tony daring a terrorist to attack him. I shook my head in disbelief. A day later, he was on the news again, now missing after his mansion in Malibu was destroyed. The next day I took a plane for California, but there was nothing left of his house. I couldn't even go there as the scene was blocked by the police, and SHIELD. Pepper was not picking up, and neither was Rhodey.

Nobody was answering or there so I went home. The news said the Mandarin had been stopped. Pepper texted me saying they were all fine and this time, it was me who did not reply. I spent the holidays at the institute.

A few months later, the SHIELD kidnapped me in the middle of the night and I was in a car with that Hawkeye guy.

"You know, there are better ways to invite people over," I told him. He shrugged.

"Agree, but orders are orders." He presented me his hand. "Clint Barton."

"Addison Carter." I shook his hand, still doubtful. I read his mind, not wanting to keep up a conversation but my eyes went wide. "You found him?"

"Yeah. I guess I should say 'welcome to the Avengers'?" I made a disgusted sound. "We're not that bad!"

"Yeah, but I tried the whole hero thing already and suck at it." He pursed his lips and kicked my leg with his foot.

"You're not on your own anymore Carter."

We arrived at the now Stark Tower in the morning. I was still in my pajamas. I was half asleep and decided to put on the panda hood of my jacket. I had been given shoes too big for me. I was lucky to have been wearing pants and not shorts.

"Barton, what's the meaning of this?" a tall blond guy asked Clint when the elevator door were opened. "Did you kidnap her?"

"No!"

"The SHIELD did," I rectified him with a side glance before looking at the guy. "Ha, you're Captain America I guess?" He was wearing...regular clothes but still looked old-fashioned.

I ignored how he thought I was reminding him of someone but he couldn't pinpoint who.

I was led to the living-room and had the pleasure to see all the Avengers. They were all thinking the same thing, who I was, minus Tony who widened his eyes comically. He took in my appearance and glared at Clint.

"Barton what did you do!?"

"I received orders Stark!" Clint defended himself, not really impressed by him.

"Tony, do you know her?" a guy with nerdy glasses asked him.

"I'm his goddaughter," I replied for him. It earned more than a few raised eyebrows.

"Oh yeah, I remember her from the Stark Exposition," the redheaded woman said. I frowned a little. She did seemed familiar.

"Addison Margaret Charpentier Carter, what are you doing here?" Captain America frowned and I nodded at him.

"Yeah, I'm her granddaughter, surprise." He was taken back and I looked at my godfather. "Surprise, I'm joining the team."

"Absolutely not!"

"Well...I don't really have a choice, do I? I mean..." I showed my outfit. "I wouldn't have come here dressed like that if I had one."

"Barton?" Cap called him.

"Fury's order Cap." Tony was livid but he was out of my sight quickly thanks to tall guy. He was grinning and kissed my hand.

"It is an honor to meet you Lady Addison, I am Thor, son of Odin, God of Thunder." I blushed a little and got my hand back.

"Sure, nice to meet you big guy." I really had a God in front of me? A real one? I looked at the guy with glasses. "I'm twenty-two turning twenty-three this year." He got up with wide eyes and Tony sighed, rolling his eyes.

"She's a mutant." Captain frowned at Tony.

"It's not a way to talk about someone who's enhanced."

"No, she is a mutant, literally, not an enhanced. Enhanced are given their powers, mutants are born with a mutated gene that gives them powers when they reach adolescence," the billionaire replied in a bored voice.

I greeted that new life with dread.
