Chapter 1
"Did we really need to come into the precinct today?" Calvin asked as he and Olivia rode in the elevator up to the bullpen. It was Saturday and they had plans on this nice early summer afternoon.
"You know I would rather be in the park right now, helping you with your pitching, but I can't exactly do that in my high heels. I have no idea how I managed to only have one pair of sneakers," she frowned as the elevator dinged and they exited their ride.
"I don't either. I could have sworn that you had a second pair," Calvin said as they headed for the locker room. Olivia checked the room, making sure no one was in there before the two of them headed inside. She opened the locker only to find two pairs of sneakers in the bottom of it.
"Well, that explains that," Calvin chuckled.
"I guess so," she chuckled herself before grabbing the top pair and then she sat down on the bench behind her. Quickly swapping her shoes for her sneakers, she threw the heels into the locker and closed it.
"Let's go," she smiled and he smiled back. They headed out of the room and were almost to the elevator when Cragen exited the lift. He looked at them, surprised to see them.
"Figured you two would have better things to do than be here," the Captain said with a smile.
"Needed my sneakers so we could play a little ball in the park. What are you doing here, Cap?" Olivia asked. She could tell by the look on his face that he'd been called in and that he'd probably already dispatched people to the crime scene
"Business, I'm afraid," Cragen's smile turned tight.
"I'll get the coffee pot started," Calvin said, knowing that their day of baseball was done before it even got started.
"No. Munch and Fin are on call this weekend. You go. If I need someone, I'll call Kenny," the Captain promised. Olivia looked at him; she didn't want to ruin Calvin's plans, but he knew her job didn't always allow for free weekends.
"Go enjoy the day. Sunday may not be so nice," Don said. Olivia nodded.
"Come on kiddo. Let's get some practice in," she smiled at him and Calvin's face lit up. They both got into the elevator and headed out to the park, leaving the Captain to handle the logistics.
"Not that I want to be pushy, but how long have you been looking for a new apartment, now that the house sold?" Kathleen asked her father. They'd met up at the diner down the street from the elder Stabler's apartment for lunch. This was a tradition they'd started since the divorce had been finalized.
"Well things are a bit…" Elliot enjoyed having an honest relationship with his adult daughter, but he knew what she was getting at and he wasn't sure how to handle it.
"Complicated?" Kathleen raised an eyebrow.
"Yes," he said.
"You can't tell anyone at work and if you get place and try to move in together… yeah I can see that being a problem," she said.
"We're going to have to make a call one way or the other, but Calvin's grandfather is going to make things more…" he trailed off again.
"Complicated? Why am I starting to sound like a parrot?" Kathleen asked.
"Matt Tidwell, Olivia's lawyer in Vermont, just got a filing from the court up there. Clint wants joint custody, which would mean that Calvin would be shuttling back and forth between here and Vermont," Elliot explained.
"That doesn't sound like a good thing," she said.
"Yeah, it doesn't. I think since Calvin is all Clint has left, he wants more than just once a month visits. Not that I blame him, but Liv isn't really keen on sending Calvin up there because there is no direct route. Well, there is but it's not by train. It's a really long bus ride. As much as Liv would rather drive him, if we're in the middle of the case…" he heaved a sigh.
"Yeah… that would be an issue," Kathleen frowned.
"We'll handle it, like we do everything else," Elliot told her. His daughter smirked. It was good to see her dad happy again. The road ahead was going to be bumpy but bumpy was their middle names.
