Broken and Beaten

Something's wrong. Like very, very wrong. Spencer already knows this won't end well, whatever it is.

"Wakey, wakey Doctor Reid," a strangely familiar voice says.

He takes in his current situation that he's tied to a chair, and starts to make out his surroundings. All he can tell is that he's in a large, windowless room. Probably a warehouse somewhere.

"Good you're awake. Now we can talk."

Doyle.

"What the hell do you want with me? You already got your revenge!" Spencer exclaims with rage and venom in his voice.

"So there is some fire in you it seems," Doyle says with a chuckle, before kicking Spencer in the ribs. It would've hurt no matter what, but the boot he has on is definitely making it worse.

"Now, Doctor, where is Emily?"

Spencer is immediately confused and angry,"What? She's dead! You killed her!"

"That's what I thought as well, but apparently she tried to fake her death once again. However, it wasn't covered up nearly as well this time."

"Emily is dead! We buried her!" Spencer yells, tears slowly beginning to fall.

"Here's the thing Doctor Reid. I'm not stupid. I know that Agent Jareau and Agent Hotchner both know where she is. But they'd both be a bit more problematic to grab. However, I've seen you visiting Agent Jareau almost every day, which makes me think you know where she is. And if you don't, I can always use you to find out from them," Doyle explains with a sadistic smile as he brings over a metal cart.

"Go to hell," Spencer says.

"Oh I will, eventually. In the meantime, let's make sure your team knows exactly how long I had you when they find your body. I was going to give you a clover to match Emily's but I'll save that for later." Doyle says as he brings the metal pen towards Spencer's chest. Spencer can feel the heat radiating from it.

Spencer screams as Doyle drags it down to make the first tally.

"Hotch, Spence is missing," JJ says, hands shaking as she holds her phone.

"What? Are you sure?" he asks.

"He was supposed to watch Henry today, but he wasn't answering any calls. We went over and his door was wide open, and his phone and other belongings were still there. And it looked like there may have been some sort of struggle."

"Okay. Gather everyone at the office, I'll be right over."

"Okay," she says, hanging up and contacting the rest of the team.

Soon everyone is in the bullpen, and Garcia and JJ are barely holding it together.

"Reid has been missing for at least a few hours. Morgan, I want you and Rossi to go back to his apartment, see if you could find anything to help. Garcia, if you can find anything. Traffic cams, messages, anything that may help," Hotch tells them. They head off to get to work, leaving Hotch and JJ standing there by themselves.

"What do you want me to do Hotch?" JJ asks.

"I need to talk to you," he replies, nodding towards his office.

Once they are inside, Hotch shuts the door, "On the way here I was informed that Emily's grave was vandalized."

JJ's blood runs cold at that, "Vandalized how?"

"Actually it's more like it was exhumed."

"Oh god. Do you think it was Doyle?"

"I think that it's more than likely it was him."

"Did they know when it happened?"

"A few days ago."

"Oh my god Hotch, what if this is why he took Spence?"

"Remember, we did discuss that he may suspect she's still alive. This was always a possibility. And even if Doyle knows Emily is still alive, why would he go after Reid?"

"Well let's assume he knows or suspect that the two of us know. Spence has been coming over to my house everyday since that day. Doyle might think that Spence knows where she is as well! And even if he doesn't, he knows that Emily and Spence were close before all of this, and that he can use him to find out or to draw Emily out again!" JJ says, panicking.

"Alright, then let's work from that and try to find out where he may be holding Reid."

"So that means we need to tell the team right?"

"Not yet. I think it would be better to wait until she arrives."

"You're bringing her back? But isn't that what Doyle wants? If he finds out she's here, then he won't need Spencer anymore!"

"If we do this right he won't know she's here. And I'm also fairly certain that even if he finds out, he'll still believe he can use Reid to get to Emily. I know you don't like this. I don't like it either, but it's the best chance we have at finding him alive."

"Okay. What do you want me to do now?"

"Go help Garcia. I have to make a call," Hotch says. JJ nods and leaves his office.

Later the team is all back in the bullpen, talking.

"There was nothing at Reid's apartment. No evidence, no signs of injury, nothing. All we can tell is that whatever happened was sudden, and that there was some sort of struggle," Morgan says.

"Okay. It's late and I know we are all worried but I need everyone to get some rest. You don't have to go home but you need to get some sleep. Understood?" Hotch says, followed by reluctant nods from the team, as he heads back into his office.

Spencer tries not to scream when Doyle brands the second tally mark into his chest. He's not successful.

"Well, Doctor Reid it seems your team still hasn't found out anything that may help them find you, which means you'll continue to suffer. Unless, of course, you want to tell me where Emily is? If you do, I'll end you quickly." Doyle says. He's enjoying this.

"I told you! Emily is dead! So I don't know what the hell your goal is here!"

"Calm down Doctor. You'll need your energy, especially if you plan on continuing to lie."

"I'm not lyi-" Spencer starts before feeling a sharp blow to his head, as his vision goes black.

"Everyone meet me in the briefing room in five minutes," Hotch tells everyone as they begin waking up after a few hours of sleep. Everyone grabs coffee and then heads into the briefing room. Hotch begins speaking, with JJ standing next to him.

"Everyone sit down. Seven months ago, I made a decision that affected this team. As you all know, Emily had lost a lot of blood after her fight with Doyle. But the doctors were able to stabilize her and she was airlifted from Boston to Bethesda under covert exfiltration. Her identity was strictly need-to-know. And she stayed there until she was well enough to travel. She was reassigned to Paris, where she was given several identities, none of which we had access to for her security."

"Wait, she's alive?" Garcia asks, as the team sits there, stunned.

"What the hell Hotch? We buried her!" Morgan yells.

"As I said I take full responsibility for the decision. If anyone has any issues, they should be directed toward me," Hotch says calmly.

"Any issues?! Yeah I got issues!" Morgan says, furiously, as they hear footsteps approaching the room. Everyone turns around and sees Emily standing there.
