Colonial Faststar Chiron CIC

Lt. Cmdr. Ronda Jasper was not a happy person. She had been called to New Hadrian to have a meeting the the subcolonies SDF Commander upon arrival. Her original orders were to show up to the system and work on training up her new Viper wing while "showing the flag" in the system. Would have been fine except she did not get her Viper wing due to delays and now she was expected to leave a week earlier. So now it was the older Chiron to keep law and order in this binary system.

"Major I will be down on the planet for a few hours. Not sure what our orders will be but make sure we are ready to jump out if needed" Jasper said. Not that Major Mashon wouldn't have everything ready he was a very good XO.

"Yes Sir," said Major Dominick Marton replied. "Which Raptor were you thinking of taking Sir?"

"I was actually thinking of taking Scooter. She's new to the ship but seems to be fitting in well and I would like to see how she flies" said Cmdr. Jasper.

"Yes sir" said Major Marton more than a little rolling his eyes in his head. The Commander is a good officer but her issues with pilots while not noticeable to most had been something Marton had picked up on the last 2 years. It's not exactly rare but making Commander without ever taking the pilot or LSO track is harder.

"OK Dom you hold down the fort while I am gone" said Jasper.

Flight Bay Chiron

"Lt. Greene I am requesting to use one of the raptors for the day. I was wondering if Scooter was available" said Cmdr. Jasper.

"Yes sir her Raptor is all fueled and loaded" said Lt. Kelly Greene. "Any word on when we might get our Vipers sir?"

"Sorry Lt. I know this a pain for you guys and Chief Aspers. How is she and the other Deck Crew doing by the way" said Jasper.

"Sir honestly I am more worried about them over fixing the Raptors. The new transfers are fine and Aspers definitely has them in line. The deck itself is ready to go we just need our birds" she said hoping that the Cmdr. didn't look to much into the storage lockers. Those would take a few more days to get sorted out.

"Of course Lt." said Jasper. Making a mental note to send Marton down here to check everything out. He was a former deckhand himself so knew the tricks. Plus as the XO it's his job to be the hard ass. Also fracking Adar with his plan to retire off Battlestars before replacing them with other ships. Sure the Colonies has a lot of Vipers but with most of them in the Colonies themselves out here in the Outer Zone the 25 crated Vipers on Libran don't do much good if the Cylons decide to end their 40 years of isolation. And also fracking Nagala and the other Admirals who had agreed to retire some older smaller Battlestars. As much as it hurts to admit it an Adamant would be much more capable of the duties than a Centaur. "When I am back we will have a check in with Juno to see how her transfers and newbies are doing" said Jasper.

"Yes sir" replied Greene. She wasn't too worried as Juno had reported that her new ECO Ensign Maliki "Big Top" was good if not as good as her old ECO Lt. Dubois "Tabby". Dubois wasn't happy keeping an eye on Ensign Stevens "Panda" as Dubois had commented that Panda should be called Pancake after how she felt after landing. Of course green pilots being inexperienced is something that the ECOs had been dealing with forever.

Raptor 36814 on route to New Hadrian

Lt. JG. Bailey Sanders "Scooter" loved flying. Not rare with pilots of course but even this short trip that she suspected was more for the "Old Lady" to check on her flying skills was nice and New Hadrian was a pretty looking planet. Doubt there would be time to look at more than the landing tarmac but maybe when her next leave came up she could check out one of the many islands. Or just the "city" itself since it's only the size of a large town.

"Sir was are about 5 minutes from landing" said Sanders. "Rebound please message the base that we are on final approach."

"Yes sir" said Lt. Evan Krevitz "Rebound". "Asp City Landing Zone this is Raptor 36814 of the Chiron about 5 minutes out from landing. Please signal which pad you want us to use" (of the current 3 on the base).

"Raptor 36814 please follow the landing signals to the correct pad" said the ground control.

"Roger" said Rebound.

Cmdr. Jasper was more thinking about her upcoming meeting with the Virgon SDF base Commander. SDF people can sometimes be "prickly" when it comes to the Colonial Navy. Scooter though had seemed like a good pilot. Her and her NCO might not yet be a well oiled machine but both were transfers in from other ships and they should be fine with a bit more practice. Jasper had never been a pilot or even deck crew but more than 2 decades in the Fleet she had picked up a lot about Raptors.

Thank you Scooter and Rebound" said Jasper when the flight landed. "That was a nice flight. Not sure how long we will be here so stay close so we can leave when done.'

"Yes sir" said Scooter and Rebound.

Base Commanders Office SDF Virgon Asp City

Her initial thoughts on the Virgon SDF Commander was that he seemed competent. With the greetings and pleasantries out of the way it was time to see what was going on. Jasper decided to get to the point. "Thank you sir for the drinks but I feel like there is more going on here than a social call for a new ship."

The Virgon Commander Roger Atwood said "yes Cmdr. there is. Unfortunately there is a situation going on here. How much do you know about the Ofis system?"

Jasper had read the report. "Discovered just before the War. Colonization efforts were of course put on hold. Around 15 years ago Virgon was granted subcolony rights. It's a binary system with only 1 Kobol like planet. Ofis A also has an asteroid belt that has some mining. Population around 100,000. Ofis B has no useable planets but does have a fairly rich asteroid belt with around 2,500 in Ofis B." There was a bit more involving the standard bribes and nepotism that were fairly common with subcolonies but Jasper decided to not mention that.

"Well, Commander that does seem concise. You did mention that both systems have their own mining going on. Are you aware of the two companies and their separate contracts" asked Atwood. After a headshake Atwood continued. "I admire your discretion but we both know these things are expensive. During the initial bid the Rollins Consortium purchased a 50 year sole mining rights to Ofis system. Both Ofis A and B were considered average with B being slightly richer. However with New Hadrian here Ofis A was assumed to be more profitable. So the Rollins Consortium decided to defray some costs by subcontracting out Ofis B to another company Maxon Mining Inc for 50 years. The problem is that Ofis B has far more tylium than the surveys noticed. Over the years there have been more than an average amount of missed shipments to Ofis B, equipment broken, and other issues to cause acrimony. Recently there have also been a few pirate attacks. It might be corporate or not. However I would like them to stop and it needs to be investigated before the Governor returns from Virgon."

Frak thought Jasper. The Governor is part of the Rollins family. Probably part of why this had continued for so long. Hoping to get more information Jasper asked "Yes sir, I can see the problem. Has the Viirgon SDF been able to provide any information?"

Atwood took a second to reply said "the Virgon SDF has been unable to help out. We only have 3 of our 8 Viper squads and none have been allocated to Ofis B and the Ofis B base has not yet been started. Also Raptors are also less than half the original goal. With over 97% of the people in this solar here at Ofis B it is considered best to keep the Virgon SDF forces here."

Jasper was now well aware of the problem and that Atwood was trying to do his duty and still follow orders from his superiors. "Yes sir, we will jump to Ofis B and see what we can find out."

Jasper after having a briefing with her senior staff and informing them of their new mission.

"Lt. Drakos please ready jump to Ofis B Culepla Belt."

"Yes sir" said Lt. Beth Drakos.

End Chapter One

This is my first storyline so feedback would be nice. Also here are my thoughts to hopefully explain some possible questions
SDF means System Defense Force. All 12 Colonies have their own SDF. The quality is uneven and there is sometimes tension between the SDFs and the regular Colonial is Landing Signals Officer. Like Kelly was on BSG. I am putting this officer in charge of the flight deck. On the ship they are in charge of the Vipers, Raptors, and any other small craft. In space and the pilots are under the CAG.

Adar is not in this storyline antimilitary. He is indifferent. The Cylons have been quiet for 40 years and pushing for more colonies (subcolonies are not capitalized) is becoming more popular. This makes smaller multipurpose ships more appealing. In pushback the Admiralty are keeping their "prestige" Battlestars like the Mercuries, Valkyries, or Novas going by retiring some older ships. Obviously the Jupiters like Galactica but also some of the smaller Battlestar designs like Adamants and Artemis are being phased out.

The Chiron is a Faststar but no one really uses that term. It's "messy" as it does describe size but so many possible variations to be uninformative. The Chiron is a Guardian type ship more specifically Centaur design. They have no flight pods. Small craft launch and land in the center bay. The Chiron does not have launch tubes or the other things that make a Battlestar a space carrier. Launching and landing is slower on a Guardian type ship. The Chiron would if it's Vipers arrived in time had 25 Vipers (a squad is 20 with 5 in reserve) but their Vipers were delayed. However about 1/3 of the supplies had been delivered but not properly sorted.
