So back with another new story this time form worldwanderer2.0.
Anyway this idea is all his so send him some lover. Just to let you know this well be my first time writing the Chief in an actual story. So I just hope I don't butcher the character too much at any rate.
With that though aside, all rights go to their owners, as I own not thing!
In the seemingly endless void of space, a dead hulk of vessel ever so slowly through tumbled through the uncaring void of space. Deep within this broken ship however there was a flicker of light showed that it wasn't full abandoned.
Why should've have been?
As the broken ship had once been the back section of the UNSC Forward unto Dawn. The ship of that late Miranda Keyes; having played a key role in ending the most deadly threats every against humanity.
The remains of this once proud vessel now served as an ark for the UNSC most decorated hero and the man responsible for ending those threats: The Master Chief.
But he wasn't alone in the ship. As stranded with him, taking refuge within the Dawns remain systems was his faithful AI companion: Cortana.
Cortana, the only person who the Chief trusted to watch over him as he entered into Cyro-sleep. Waiting like her, for a rescue that might not even come from them.
But as year came and went; Cortana could only guess as to how long it might take for someone to find them. So as another mouth collapsed and she finished rewriting the MJOLNIR software did the Dawns remaining senses pick something up.
For a moment Cortana wasn't sure what it was, but a quick look showed it to be an open COM channel or unknown origin. As Cortana then tuned into the channel, she quickly came to the realized they weren't alone out here. At which point she decided it would be best not to be noticed, as such Cortana switch off the beacon and let the ship go dark, all the while hoping that however she had overheard hadn't notice them.
Three more days followed after that, as Cortana ran thought the massage she had picked up. In that time she had picked up at least three more like it, all in the same strange language.
But as Cortana ran through it for seventh hundredth time, trying to get something out of it. Her analysis was interrupted by an alert from the Dawns systems. Cortana then put that massage a side as she brought up the alert and she couldn't believe what they systems were telling her.
'Wake me, when you need me.' The words of her old partner rang through her head.
As Cortana brought up the controls for Chiefs Cyro-pod, pausing for a moment to look at him through the frost tinted glass.
Then she pushed the button as the pod started to his and the Chiefs familiar form started to appear through the glass.
"Wake up Chief, I need you." Cortana said as he started to wake up.
The first thing the Master Chief did once his mind unthawed was to attempt to escape whatever container he was in.
"Chief you've been out for a while." The ever so welcomed voice of Cortana came to him. "Hang on; I'm bringing you suits systems back online." Then with the appearance of her unmistakable blue avatar, did Chiefs MJOLNIR systems boot up.
"You've been busy." The Chief commented as he looked for the pods manual release.
"I rewrote you suit systems while you were out." Cortana explained as the Chief finally found that lever and pulled it.
Then with a slit hiss, the pod opened and the chief walked out.
"Ready to get back to work?" He asked as he walked over to her.
"Just like old time." Cortana quipped, as the Chief then grab her chip and placed it in his helmet.
"How long was I out?" The Chief inquired as he started making his way towards the nears armory to arm up.
"One year, four mouths, and twenty nine day." Cortana informed the Chief.
"Why did you wake me?" The Chief asked as he continued forward towards his final destion.
"We're currently on a collision coarse with an unknown planet. I thought it would be best to wake you before we go into range." Cortana informed him as they finally reached their distention.
"Do we have any Pelicans we can use?" The Chief inquired, as he started stuffing items into a duff bag he had found.
"Yes, but I'm not sure what kind of shape they might be in." Cortana said as the Chief grunted in acknowledgement.
As he figured that might be the case. Still if he was lucky anything to go by, then there should be enough parts laying around that he and Cortana could find a way to get one of the Pelicans working.
"How long till we are in range of a Pelican?" The Chief inquired as he started to stuff his second duffle bag.
"Three days at most. Also might be sooner, I'm picking up COM traffic from the planets, so we might have company." Cortana informed him of this fact.
"Is the beacon still active?" Chief wanted to know how soon he might be forced to deal with their uninvited guests.
"No. I turned it off once I picked up the COM traffic." Cortana let him know what she had done, as the Chief chambered A round into his MA5C.
"Covenant?" The Chief jumped the most obvious reason as to why she would've done this.
"No, but I've never encountered the language before. It's strange…" Cortana trailed off as the Chief continues his questioning.
"Have they spotted us?" The Chief then inquired.
"I don't think so. But I would have to use what remained the active senses to find out." Cortana said, letting the Chief fill in the blanks.
As the Chief completely understood as to why Cortana had done that. As they were pretty much a sitting duck out here; and even if they could fight if any boarding party that might be sent against them.
Chief didn't want to be the person solely responsible for drag the UEG into another first contact war. As they were still barely fresh off that of the last Covenant and the Chief knew that UNSC wasn't in a position to fight another one.
As simply put the infrastructure wasn't there for the UEG to fight another war so soon. As most of had been either damaged or destroyed during the war. So the Chief and Cortana knew they had to play this carefully, less they started another one.
But first the two of them had to escape from the Dawn before they could worry about any of that.
So for the next three days, the Chief and Cortana spent every waking moment preparing everything they could for when they abandoned the Dawn. As weapons were moved, files either downloaded or destroyed, Pelicans prepared and made ready to use and the Dawn herself was stripped most of her useful material that could be moved.
Then the day finally came, as they had finally drifted into extreme range of the near habitable planets in the system. And Cortana was starting to pick up COM traffic about an unidentified object approaching, which in all likelihood was referring to them.
Still there was the fact that Cortana had hear this part in English raised more questions than it actual answered. But for the moment she would keep this information to herself, at least until she could gather more information.
"Something the matter?" Chief asked suddenly as Cortana realized that she had stopped talking midway through explaining somethings.
"Well… I'm picking up more COM traffic, not entirely sure it's related to us." Cortana half lied to Chief.
As she didn't want to worry him just yet what she had been picking up on the COMs. Because there was at least five or six different languages she had picked up from open channels alone. One of which had been English.
"Is any of it related to the Pelicans from earlier?" The Chief then inquired.
What the Chief was referring to was the fact that both he and Cortana had quickly figured out that they wouldn't be able to transport everything they wanted off the Dawn in one go. So to remedy that problem the two of them had fixed and loaded three Pelicans total, full off supplies. Though this had mostly been done when Chief wasn't either stripping the Dawn down for parts or placing explosives across the ship.
One of which was going to be used by the Chief and Cortana to get themselves off the Dawn, while the other two had been programmed by Cortana and modified by the Chief to act as cargo ships they could call down once they established a foot hold on one of the planets now in range.
"No. At least I don't think so…" Cortana said as Chief he started up the Pelican as it slowly dropped from the Dawns ruined hanger bay.
The Chief slowly brought the ship around behind the Dawns shadow, to shield them from any prying eyes as he did one last look over the ship.
"That's the last of it. Cortana?" The Chief asked her, knowing that this was their last chance to get anything from the Dawn.
"The explosions are primed Chief. You know, once we do this there won't be any going back. Right?" Cortana said as the Chief started to make his way away from the Dawn.
"We'll make it work." He reassured her as the continued to pull away from the now doomed ship.
Then once the Pelican was out of range. Cortana sent the signal to the explosives on board the Dawn which for a moment did nothing. But moment's later, the ship was tore apart by several bright glowing fire ball of fire that broke the back of the once proud vassal, leaving no sensitive information for anyone to recover.
As the Pelicans only two occupants now sped towards what had actual turned out to be a moon in orbit of a larger planet.
Still this approach hadn't gone unnoticed, as the COMs then lit up with someone demanding to know who they were and what businesses they had on the planet.
For his part Chief kept COM silence as he feed more power to the engines, all the while waiting for Cortana to give him the signal.
"Gotcha. Chief gun it." Cortana said as the Chief feed more power to the engines.
As the Pelican now raced towards the marker that Cortana put on their flight path.
"Any reasons why we're go there?" Chief inquired as shifted the Pelicans path towards the planets moon.
"It's a mining colony. And unlike the other planet it doesn't have large swaths of radioactive wastelands." Cortana said as the Chief got the picture.
Because between the two, the Chief could more easily avoid the local athories then radioactive winds. So it was a no brainer as he adjusted the ships course.
"I have two ships on an intercept course. I'll put them on screen now." Cortana said as two red dots appeared on flight map.
Chief checked the map and saw they would be well clear before the ship got into range. Still he did adjust the Pelicans flight path, as he wanted to avoid any major population centers on the planet below as it started to full take up his vision outside the Pelicans cockpit.
"Do you have any ID's on the ships?" The Chief asked, hoping that they would yield some useful information as to who these natives were.
"No. There an unknown design, matching nothing in my databanks." Cortana informed him as they finally reached the plant outer atmosphere.
"Here we go." The Chief said as he then put the Pelican into a crashed dive as he entered into the planet's atmosphere.
And with a little luck and some well placed timing, the local inhabitants would conclude that he had crashed upon reentry the planets atmosphere.
As the Chief now held the stick study in his hand. As he waited for the perfect moment to pull up.
And that all she wrote.
I hope that you enjoyed that, still I will warn you now that updates will be spotty at best considering that I have two other active stories at the moment. Still this was a request fic, so I'll do my best to update regularly.
Still I'll try to get as far as I can with this story at any rate.
Anyway until next time have a good one.
