Disclaimer: I do not own J.R.R. Tolkien's Legendarium, Buffyverse or anything else you may recognize
Almost 3 weeks after finishing 'Angel and Devil at Law', here I am with one more fic.
And here we are with the LOTR/Buffyverse crossover aimed to end this series. Sequel to my Hobbit/Buffyverse crossover titled 'The Hobbit: The Unexpected Companions', which you'd have to read to understand this.
Anyway, all I'll tell in advance is the 5 main Buffyverse characters from the previous fic that are Willow, Angel, Tara, Faith and Dawn, will also be part of the Fellowship of the Ring, while the other Buffyverse characters will also have their own roles, not as part of the Fellowship though.
But that's all I'll tell.
Thanks a lot to Brainstorm Sorcerer, Rutkowski, gammaxmen80, Stand with Ward and Queen, Bl4ckHunter, Arrowverse Fan 217, OmnnipotentUIJudgeofCharacterOV and Marcus S. Lazarus for some ideas on this, its very much appreciated.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring turned 20 today, so what better day to begin this fic?
Have fun.
Chapter 1- An evil banished
Sunnydale High
An epic battle was taking place in the Hellmouth underneath Sunnydale High. The Slayers had been activated by Willow Rosenberg, with Tara Maclay having used her power to encase the town in a dome so that the Slayer activation spell remained within Sunnydale and other Slayers worldwide do not get called against their will.
Buffy Summers, the original Slayer, was the one leading this battle, wielding the scythe called the M? which she used to hew all the Turok-Han against her.
Faith Lehane, the former Dark Slayer who had redeemed herself and become Buffy's ally was involved in the battle too.
Angel and Spike were also battling. Before, they had been evil Vampires, now both had souls to atone for their sins, and due to the gravity of the situation, they were not bickering for once.
Willow and Tara were both blasting the Turok-Han from above with magic while hovering in the air, their staffs pointed outwards.
The other activated Slayers battled with the fervor of newly activated Slayers, which is what they were.
In other parts of the school above, the other members of the Scooby Gang and Team Angel also fought the Turok-Han and Bringers that went past the heroes at the Hellmouth.
At the atrium- Xander Harris, Dawn Summers, and Charles Gunn fought the Turok-Han coming at them.
In the lounge it was Rupert Giles, Cordelia Chase, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, Winnifred 'Fred' Burkle and Robin Wood in battle.
And in the north hall Anya Jenkins and Jonathan Levinson held the enemies back to the best of their ability.
The enemy they were facing was called the First Evil, the absolute embodiment of all evil. Few had heard of it and even fewer believed in its existence.
But it was real, and it was the enemy they faced.
It was intangible, and could take the form of people who had died, including Vampires and those who got resurrected after their deaths. Its way of attack was taking the form of a dead loved one and using it to insult, as that got under one's skin.
It worked too, since the First Evil could also replicate the personality of whoever it impersonated (except perhaps Drusilla who was just THAT crazy). Having the memories was an added bonus.
But what the heroes in the Hellmouth had just found out, was that the First Evil was intangible no more.
It appeared, in the form of a beautiful dark-skinned woman, her presence bringing dread to the group as she attacked, easily overpowering any Slayer that tried to fight her. Angel and Spike were tossed away too.
The woman was no ordinary woman. She was none other than the Beastmaster, who had manipulated events to make sure Holtz abducted Connor and took him to Quor'toth, though that had failed due to the fluctuating rip in the Universe sending the two to Dol Guldur in Middle-earth instead.
She had sent the Beast to get them back, only for Sauron to take it from her, and use it for his own plans of conquest.
And Cordelia whom she'd planned to use as her host had been warned of the future already, while Connor was still a baby, so that plan was now off the table.
Desperate, the Beastmaster had tried another plan- Send the insect Demons from her former Dimension to Earth. But only one of those could pop up at Earth for a certain period of time before another could join it, so that plan was too slow.
She was not getting enough power, having lost the Beast, though her minions had attacked Wolfram and Hart, driving most of the workers away, but Lilah Morgan was efficient and while dangerous, the insect Demons were nothing compared to the Beast who could have wiped out the whole firm in one night.
Lilah had used the firm's resources to hold the insect Demons back, and they had entered a deadlock.
That was when the First Evil had appeared to the Beastmaster with the offer to boost and bring her to Earth, and then finish her plan.
She had lost the Beast, and opening portals to make the insect Demons come through was weakening her.
Beggars couldn't be choosers.
So, having no choice, she had allowed the First Evil to boost her, only, it had possessed her instead, taking over entirely.
And then it had also negated her hive mind control, as that relied on her (very twisted) love for the people she was controlling. The First was incapable of such affection.
The First Evil had abandoned the Beastmaster's plot in Los Angeles, withdrawing the insect Demons, and had gone off to Sunnydale for the final battle.
While the Beastmaster's mind control had been negated, her body was powerful due to her being a former Power That Be.
The First with this body was quite powerful, as Buffy tried to strike with the M? but it blocked with its elbow, and the cut healed instantly before it tossed Buffy into Faith, sending both rolling away.
Willow and Tara gritted their teeth, trying to use magic on it but it conjured one of its own and after a short struggle, sent them flying back.
Seeing its power, Buffy remembered the day Giles had returned with some Potentials and told her of it.
Weeks ago
Giles sat on the arm of the couch at Buffy's house. "The First is unlike almost anything we've faced before. I mean, there's evil and then there's the thing that created evil, the source." Giles now looked genuinely scared.
"That's what this thing claims to be?"
"No." That answer surprised everyone. "It is a product of the source. The true creator is a being we are vaguely familiar with, Buffy." Giles looked straight into Buffy's eyes, as a horrible shared memory flashes in his eyes. "Morgoth."
Buffy only ever heard that name once, but where she heard before, it sent shivers down her very being and scared the Slayer to her core.
"Middle-earth."
Present Day
And now it was here, in the flesh. Buffy had no idea how to defeat it. Even the Slayer activation spell had failed, as the new Slayers were no match for it.
What Buffy did not know was that a savior was here too, arriving precisely when he meant to.
Anya was fighting enemies in the North Hall, a Bringer about to stab her from behind when the Bringer was stabbed through the chest instead. Anya turned as the sword was retracted and the Bringer fell down to reveal an old man in grey robes and grey hat with a greyish beard, a long staff in one hand and a beautiful sword with inscriptions in the other.
"Oh, thanks for the save, Mr…."
"Gandalf!" Jonathan cried out in surprise and delight as Gandalf the Grey gave him a nod, then struck forwards with his sword and staff, smacking and slicing Turok-Han and Bringers alike, moving at a speed no normal old man could come close to matching.
"Wow, he's spry for an old fellow", Anya quipped, watching in awe as Gandalf swept through the swath.
"So are you", Jonathan quipped, only to get a glare.
At the Hellmouth, the Turok-Han were advancing on the downed heroes when suddenly there was a bright light, which caused them discomfort and they screeched in pain and anger.
The Scoobies lifted up their heads to see Gandalf holding up his staff, Glamdring in his other hand as he stood between the Turok-Han and the heroes.
Some of them tried to charge but he struck them down with his sword, then held it up, calling down a huge bolt of lightning which shattered the place and killed many more.
They could all only watch in awe.
"Bloody hell, now that's an old man not to cross", Spike quipped.
"Gandalf!" Tara cried out, sharing a happy look with Willow, a smile on their faces.
"Nice to see you here", Willow added.
Gandalf smirked as Angel commented. "Thanks for the save."
"You're late though", Faith quipped.
"A Wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to", Gandalf told her as he marched to the Turok-Han.
As they screeched, Gandalf urged them. "Go now!"
"What? You'll fight them alone?!" Buffy asked in shock.
"Yes, I am going to end it", Gandalf said.
Willow started. "But-"
"Do as I say!" Gandalf commanded as he stood with determination on his face. "I shall end this."
The Scoobies realized he had a plan, and decided to respect his wishes. The newly activated Slayers were awed by the power they were witnessing from him.
The Scoobies, Angel and the Slayers started moving away as the Turok-Han screeched and charged but Gandalf held out his staff and an invisible barrier blocked them all.
Then, raising his staff and Glamdring Gandalf declared- "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"
As soon as he finished, he slammed his staff down on the ground and a loud cracking noise was heard.
A bright flash of light went off as the Turok-Han instantly disintegrated, and the place shook.
The First Evil looked around in horror, then glared at Gandalf in anger. It was aware of what the Grey Wizard truly was, due to the nature of its creation.
Roaring, it tried to fire a blast of magic but Gandalf defended himself, then expanded his force field outwards as it was sent flying back and falling off.
As it staggered up, Gandalf called down lightning once more and empowered Glamdring, before pointing it at the First.
The Beastmaster screamed as it was destroyed by the lightning, causing a bright explosion.
When it was finished, the Beastmaster was a smoldering corpse while the First had fled.
Outside, the others were in the bus, with Angel and Cordelia holding baby Connor, who'd been left there, guarded by Krevlornswath 'Lorne' of the Deathwok Clan.
"Gandalf? He's here? And fighting the…..?" Dawn trailed off, sounding both happy and concerned.
"Yeah, we were as surprised as you, Dawnie", Tara told the girl as they heard a loud sound and turned to see the school collapsing, the dust and debris falling out.
"There it goes again", Buffy muttered when out of the dust walked Gandalf.
Dawn had an overjoyed smile and rushing to Gandalf, wrapped him in a hug. "Oh Gandalf! I missed you so much! Its great to see you!"
"I missed you too little one", Gandalf said, returning the hug as then Willow, Tara and Faith arrived too.
He parted from Dawn and hugged the three of them happily.
"Well, 'arrives precisely when he means to' seems about right", Faith quipped as they shared a chuckle.
"What happened to the First?" Willow asked.
"The body it was using is destroyed", Gandalf assured her.
"I'm guessing it escaped", Tara realized.
"Yes, but it is too weak to launch an assault like this again", Gandalf said as he walked to the bus. "A curious chariot this is, no horses to draw it either I see."
"Its called a 'bus'", Dawn told him.
"Ah, right", Gandalf nodded, getting inside. Angel and Spike had both covered themselves in blankets and hadn't gone out due to the son.
"Gandalf", Angel greeted as they shared a hug too.
"Angel", Gandalf greeted back, then noticed Cordelia with baby Connor. "I see you and your family are still happy."
"Oh yeah, not perfectly happy, but acceptably happy, that's what one does", Cordelia quipped as Gandalf chuckled.
"Rupert", he then greeted Giles with a nod.
"Gandalf", Giles nodded back.
"What did you do?" Buffy asked Gandalf.
"The Hellmouth has been sealed now", Gandalf revealed, surprising all of them. "While there will still be evil in Sunnydale, it will not be the seat of it anymore like it was before."
"Wow! Old man knows his stuff", Anya commented.
"Tell me about it", Spike agreed.
"Man, his aura is….." Lorne trailed off, awed by what he felt, and feeling warmed by it too. He walked to Gandalf and shook his hand. "Heard a lot about you, pleasure to meet you, Grey Wizard, and I must say, that aura is warmer than a heater."
"You must be Lorne, I am honored to meet you too", Gandalf told him with a smile.
"Looks like the Hellmouth is officially closed for business", Xander summed it all up. Seven years of fighting and losses, and finally, they had one big win.
"Thank you Gandalf", Buffy said gratefully.
"Not a problem, Miss Summers", Gandalf assured her.
"So, Merlin was all we needed, why didn't we call him first?" Kennedy asked and all groaned, annoyed, then she looked at Gandalf and scoffed. "Why didn't you come before? You have any idea how-"
She was cut off when Gandalf bonked her head with his staff, making her gasp and fall back to her seat as she rubbed her head.
"Respect your elders, little girl."
"Many times elder", Giles added, due to how old Gandalf was.
"As happy as we are you helped, I've a feeling it wasn't your original intention though", Fred then said. "Thanks though."
"Yeah, means a lot", Gunn added.
"You are right, my intention wasn't to help against the evil you faced, I just sensed it when I came and banished it", Gandalf explained to the whole group, then turned to the Scoobies and Team Angel. "I am here because Bilbo Baggins is about to reach 111 years, and I want you all to come to the celebrations."
So that's the opening here.
If there's any confusion, the First here possessed Jasmine to become corporeal but now Jasmine is destroyed. Jasmine's canonical plan failed due to events in the previous fic so she'd to improvise and that went well...NOT!
Now Gandalf is here and has destroyed Jasmine while banishing the First Evil, and they're all invited to Bilbo's 111th.
Gandalf managed to shut the Hellmouth without destroying Sunnydale too. The amulet was given by Wolfram and Hart, now while they'd want to stop the First I imagine they won't care about collateral damage, which in this case was the whole of Sunnydale.
So hope what Gandalf did with his powers made sense.
In this series the First Evil was created by Melkor/Morgoth when he added his discord to the Great Music.
Won't update this regularly, since while I have the basic ideas in mind, some details need to be fleshed out, but I hope you enjoyed this opener, and this was the best day to start this fic too.
Anyway, hope all enjoyed and see you all next time with another chapter.
