"Something's happening."
The alien lady with the antennae announced, clearly worried.
I suddenly felt a familiar tingling sensation erupt from the back of my head, warning me of danger.
Danger coming from...where exactly? The tingling sensation keeps on, well, tingling even though there isn't anything dangerous around us...
The big purple guy, I think his name was Thanos, left us moments ago and the only ones here are me, Mr. Stark, Dr. Strange, Mr. Quill, the alien lady and- What the hell?!
The alien lady suddenly turned to dust, leaving nothing but air in her place.
What the hell just happened?!
We stared at the now empty space in shock and horror.
"Quill...?"
The big guy with red tattoos said in confusion before he, too, turned to dust.
Star Lord looked at us, fear clearly visible on his face.
"Steady, Quill..."
Mr. Stark said with a shaky voice.
"Aw, Man..."
Those were his last words before he joined the other two in turning to dust.
"Tony..."
Dr. Strange called out to Mr. Stark.
"There was no other way..."
He breathed shakily before turning to du- Gah! The tingling feeling from before suddenly became stronger!
Wha- there's nothing the- oh. Oh no.
"Mr. Stark? I don't feel so good..."
My hands were beginning to turn to dust like the others.
"I don't know what's – I don't know what's happening. I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go, sir, please!"
Oh, God I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die.
"Please, I don't wanna go. I don't wanna go."
Mr. Stark suddenly leaned forward, unable to support my full weight and set me down on a nearby piece of debris. I suddenly felt a large sting on the back of my head before everything went black.
"Peter Parker-san, unfortunately, you have died. Your life may have been short but know that you have saved a lot of lives before you died."
A female voice suddenly spoke.
I opened my eyes to see a girl with white hair in front of me.
Looking around me, I could see that I wasn't on Titan anymore; I was in a pure white room, sitting in a chair while the girl with white hair sat on a chair opposite to me.
"What the- Where am I?!"
I quickly jumped to my feet and eyed the girl suspiciously. The tingling on the back of my head was now gone.
Great, at least I know I'm not in danger. Although, there's something about the girl that feels...off.
"Excuse me, where am I, miss...?"
"My name is Eris, I'm the goddess of luck. As for where you are, well, to put it simply, you died, and this is the afterlife."
So there is an afterlife after all.
I wonder what happens after this...
Wait, did she say Eris, the Goddess of luck?
"You're a Goddess, like Thor?"
"Yes...well, not exactly like him, but yes. I'm a Goddess"
Well, that explains the weird feeling from earlier. Although, I don't think I've heard of any Goddesses named Eris.
I wonder what her powers are...Thor can fly, shoot lightning, and is strong enough to destroy an entire city. She said she was the Goddess of luck, so her powers should be luck based. Then again, Thor's the God of 'Thunder' but he summons lightning instead of big booming sounds, so anything goes.
"What kind of powers do you have?"
"Powers?"
"Oh, you know, kinda like how Thor can summon lightning, fly, and has super strength. What about you? What are your powers?"
"I can manipulate people's luck to either make them really lucky or really unlucky."
"And...?"
"Um, that's it..."
"Oh...right..."
Well, I mean, I don't know what I was expecting. I mean, she's the Goddess of Luck, after all.
"Um, can I ask another question?"
"Of course."
" I was wondering, what happened to the others? You know, Doctor Strange, Aunt May, Ned...?"
"They turned to dust, same as you..."
Ah, I was really hoping they survived. Hopefully I get to meet them soo-
"Until they were brought back five years later."
"I'm sorry, brought back?"
"Yes. You see, five years after you died, the Avengers travelled back in time to collect infinity stones and used them to reverse the snap."
"Wait, travelled back in time? Did they use the green infinity stone Dr. Strange had? Or did they create a time machine?"
"They created a time machine."
"No way, they really created a fully functional time machine?! That is so cool! Was Einstein right about it? How does it work? What kind of geometries of spacetime or specific types of motion allows time travel? Does changing the past change the future or does it create an alternate timeline? Is any event truly unchangeable? What about paradoxes? Does killing your grandfather stop you from existing, which in turn stops you from killing your grandfather therefore creating a time loop? Or does it spawn another timeline where you weren't born? Was Novikov self-consistency principle correct? If someone receives a watch from the future then, after fifty or sixty years, they send it back in time to the very moment they received it, does it eventually get worn out and breaks, therefore breaking the time loop, or is it forever stuck in that state?"
"Oh, um..."
"Sorry, I got carried away."
"It's alright, it's not like I'm in a hurry."
"Right, sorry..."
Man, a fully functioning time machine...what I wouldn't give to see that...wait a minute.
"Earlier, you mentioned that the Avengers brought everyone back from the dead?"
"Yes."
"I don't want to sound rude, but, if they brought everyone back then...what exactly am I still doing here?"
"Yes, about that...the Avengers brought back everyone who was turned to dust."
"And...?"
"You weren't one of them."
"I'm sorry?"
Not one of them?! I literally saw my own hands turning to dust!
"But- but I turned to dust! I literally saw my hands become dust!"
"Yes, unfortunately, that wasn't how you died..."
"Then how?"
"The back of your head was impaled by a piece of metal."
"Wha- When did- when did that happen?"
"Remember when you began turning to dust?"
"Yes"
"And Stark set you down?"
Wait a minute. I did feel a sharp sting on the back of my head before I blacked out...
"You're telling me I died because Mr. Stark accidentally set me down on a random piece of metal?!"
"Yes."
You've got to be joking. I survived having warehouse toppled on top of me, fighting my girlfriend's dad on top of a crashing plane, and having a moon thrown at me. Granted, I didn't exactly get hit by the moon, but still...a random piece of metal? Talk about unlucky...unlucky...
"Are you alright?"
"Wha-? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I'm alright...so, uh, what happens now?"
"Now you get a choice."
"A choice? Do I get to choose whether I go to heaven or hell? Because if that's the case then I choose to go to heaven."
"No, that- that's not the choices. Why would we give someone the option to go to hell?"
"I dunno...masochists?"
"No. Just...no."
"Right, so then what are my choices?"
"Well, the first option would be to go to heaven and live in there for the rest of eternity. The second option would be to be reincarnated as a baby-"
"I can get reincarnated?"
"Yep. You get reincarnated as a baby without any memories of your previous life."
So, my options are to either go to heaven or be reincarnated as a baby? I wonder what would be the better choice...I wonder what heaven will be like? What about the second option? What kind of person will I be reincarnated as? What would my family be like? Maybe I should just go to heaven...
"The third option would be to be reincarnated in a world, with a Demon King."
"I'm sorry, what? What was that about a Demon King?"
"To put it simply, there exists another world, one with a Demon King. When the Demon King attacked, the entire world fell into chaos."
"Ooooookay, but what does this have to do with me reincarnating?"
"Well, you see, the people who died in that world were killed by the Demon King's army and were very afraid, saying that they didn't want to die like that again. Therefore, almost all of the people who died rejected reincarnating in that world again. More specifically, that world will end if this continues since babies will cease to be born there. Hence, my superiors decided to solve that problem by sending the dead from other worlds over."
I- What- Why-
"And I'm guessing you want me to go there?"
"Pretty much."
"Why exactly do you need to send dead people there? Isn't there some kind of, I dunno, Angel King to stop him?"
"Unfortunately, no. I don't know the exact reason why, but we aren't allowed to directly interfere in that world."
Alright, then. It seems I currently have three options. One: Go to heaven, two: Reincarnate and start life over as a baby, or three: Reincarnate in another world.
"Before I choose, can I ask some questions?"
"Of course."
"Okay. First of all, what's the, um, other world like?"
"Well, my superiors modeled it based on the fantasy games from your world. It has magic, griffins, dragons, and medieval themed kingdoms."
That doesn't sound so bad.
"There are also monsters like demons, Manticores, and orcs. Of course they're nothing when compared to the Demon King's army. If you get captured by them, they'll either torture you for weeks on end until you give them what they want, or until you die. Either way, you'll die a slow and painful death should you get captured. So, it'll probably be for the best to avoid them completely. Although, you most likely won't have a choice since the Demon King's army invades towns and villages on a daily basis."
Okay, yeah, that sounds bad. Honestly, I really want to Reincarnate just to see what it's like but if I go to heaven maybe...maybe I'll be able to see Uncle Ben again...
"Second question: What's heaven like?"
"It's exactly as your people describe it - paradise. A place where you live for the rest of eternity. Everyone who went to heaven is given anything they want. You can bask in the sun all day long or spend time with your deceased relatives, provided that they weren't sent to hell."
"Right, well, how do I go to heaven?"
"Eh?! You already decided? Shouldn't you take a few seconds to think before deciding?"
"Alright then..."
"..."
"..."
"...I want to go heaven."
"Uhm, maybe you should take a few more moments. Think about the options a bit more. Reincarnating in the other world doesn't seem so bad, does it? I mean, sure there's a Demon King ravaging it, killing people, burning villages, and waging war, but there's magic there!"
Why does she want me to go there so badly?
"Is there something you're not telling me?"
"What? No. I just think that you should...you know, think about your options a bit more. Sure, heaven's literal paradise where you can live the rest of eternity in comfort with deceased family members, but maybe you should consider your options a bit more..."
She replied with a nervous smile on her face.
She's definitely hiding something.
"What are you not telling me?"
"Nothing! Nothing. I'm not hiding anything...hehehe..."
She looked away from me and scratched her cheek.
And the world's worst liar award goes to...her.
"I don't want to sound rude, but...you're horrible at lying. It's pretty obvious that you're hiding something from me."
"Oh..."
"Why do you want me to go to the other world so badly?"
"Fine...I'll tell you..."
She spent the next few minutes explaining everything to me. It turns out that before she was the one guiding souls into the afterlife, her senpai, whatever that is, was the one guiding them. But something happened so Eris had to take over and do her job. Unfortunately, ever since she took over, not a single soul was willing to go to the other world and that was the reason she wanted me to go there in the first place.
"...and that's why I wanted you to reincarnate into the other world."
"Umm..."
Eris finished explaining her reasons and looked at me expectantly.
"Look, I'm really sorry, but...I still want to go to heaven."
"Can you think it over? Again? One last time, please? Think about all those people suffering in the other world. Everyday they live in fear of the Demon King and his army. If you go there, you have the chance to help them - make them feel safe. Maybe you can even defeat the Demon King...or not. Who said you have to defeat him? You can just live as a farmer, just please reincarnate there."
She's got a point...if what she's saying is true, then I'm just turning my back on people who need my help. I'm an Avenger now. What kind of Avenger doesn't help people who are in need?...then again, what can I do against an army, let alone a freaking Demon King? I can't possibly save everyone there, can I? No. No, but...I have to try...dammit.
"Alright, fine. I I'll reincarnate into the other world."
"I understand. I'll open a gate to hea- wait, what?"
"I said I want to go to the other world."
"Really?! Yes! *ahem* What, uh, what made you change your mind?"
"Well, I thought about what you said, about the people of that world suffering, living in fear of the Demon King. I know I don't stand a chance against him, but...I can't turn my back on the people, especially those who need help."
"I see. That's pretty noble reason. Anyway, before you go there..."
Eris said while waving her hand in the air. A stack of papers suddenly materialized in front of me before dropping to the ground.
Please tell me I don't have to do paperwork.
"Please pick one divine relic to bring with you"
"Wait. What divine relics?"
"Back when we first started sending souls over to other worlds, most of them kept dying almost as soon as they arrived. Some even died within hours upon arriving. For that reason, my superiors decided to give everyone we sent over the privilege to bring one divine relic with them. It may be a god-level weapon, or one that grants the user a powerful ability or exceptional talent."
"I see...so I can pick anything I want?"
"Anything on those papers, yes."
"So, I can't, like, take an infinite amount of web fluid with me?"
"Unfortunately, no. Due to the incident involving Aqua-sama, my superiors decided to create a few rules."
"Right..."
I picked up the stack of papers and started browsing.
Let's see here...the first one here is...Demonic Blade Muramasa? Chains of Retribution? Holy Shield Zadkiel? Who named these things?
Judging from the size of the stack, this might take a while...
Ring of Torment? Nope.
Gem of Total Annihilation? Pass.
Dream Inscriptor? Let's see here..."Invade other's dreams and twist it to your desires" yeahhhhh, no. Invading other's dreams and manipulating it? that's just weird.
Agile Necklace Akiyama? Hmm...I'll put that one on the maybe.
Holy Shard Nagano? Umm...
Sword of Dismembering?! Hell no!
Hellfire? This one's...intriguing. The picture on it shows a demonic figure being beaten down by an angel with a halo on it's head. That's got to count for something, doesn't it?
On it was written, "Wield the power of the fires of hell in the palm of your hands. Use this to drive demons, monsters, and undead back."
Undead? Zombies exist in the other world?! Great. Just great.
Although...this seems useful if I need to fight them. I'm gonna put this on the maybe with the necklace.
Next up is...Disemboweling Scythe Murai. Gross
Monstrous Mace of Debauchery. Do I even need to explain why I didn't choose it?
Heavenly Gloves of Eviscerations. What's heavenly about that?!
What the hell? Almost everything here has something to do with killing people. What happened to shields and armors?
I quickly skimmed through the rest of the pamphlets trying to see if there's a single thing that focuses of defense. Long story short, there wasn't any.
"Excuse me, Miss Eris?"
"Do you need something?"
"Why isn't there any defensive items on here? Y'know, Shields, helmets, that sort of thing?"
"There isn't? That's weird. The last time I checked, there were a lot of defensive items on there...then again, that was a long time ago and Aqua-sama sent a lot of people over since then. A lot of them must have chosen defensive items, causing them to run out. Usually, I'd report this to heaven and get a new set of defensive items, but due to the new rules put into place, I can't do that. I'm afraid you'll have to choose from that pile."
"Right, thanks."
Dangit. I think I'm going to have to go with hellfire. I mean, having a necklace that makes you more agile is good, but I don't really see the point in choosing it. I'm already agile enough to dodge bullets, alien lasers and more. At least with the hellfire one, I'll have weapon to defend myself if I were to fight demons and undead.
"Okay. I choose this."
"Hellfire? Are you sure you want that?. They're great for killing demons, but drains your mana quite fast. It was my superiors' first attempt at creating a balanced divine relic. Needless to say, it didn't work out. Everyone kept picking the overpowered stuff so my superiors just decided to let it be."
"Mana?"
"Have you played a videogame before?"
"I played Skyrim a couple of times, why?"
"Well, magic in the other world functions the same way as magic from videogames. You'll need mana to cast spells."
"Is there anything else I should know?"
"I think that's it. Now, if you're finished, shall we get you to the other world?"
"Wait, I just need to do something real quick."
I looked at my nano suit and willed it to close itself.
It obeyed and compacted itself into a spider symbol on my chest.
Now all I'm wearing is my Spider-Man costume, sans mask.
"Um...do you have, like, any shirt I can borrow?"
"Here."
Eris waved her hand and a full set of neatly packed clothing appeared in front of me.
I quickly picked it up and put it over my costume.
"Right. I think that's it. I'm ready to go now."
"Very well. Before you go, take this."
She produced a bag of coins from under her dress and handed it to me.
Inside the bag seems to be heaps of coins with her face engraved on it.
"Those are called eris. They were named after me. The other world uses them as currency."
They named their currency after a Goddess? That's...weird. It's like Christians calling money Jesuses or something.
"Normally, we don't give anyone any money when sending them to the other world, but given your previous, um...occupation, I'm pretty sure you deserve this."
"Thanks!"
"You're welcome. Now then...*ahem* Peter Parker-san, you'll be heading to another world now and will become one of the hero candidates to defeat the Demon King. You'll receive a gift from the gods the moment you defeat the Demon King."
"Wait, what gift?"
"You'll be granted a wish; it may be anything you want. From power, to riches. That is your reward."
"Anything? Can I use the wish to return home?"
...or bring someone back to life...
Yep. All you have to do is defeat the Demon King."
Oh...
"Hero, may you be victorious among the many hero candidates and be the one to defeat the Demon King…!"
A circle of blue light suddenly appeared below my feet.
"Well then, I bid you farewell!"
"Bye, miss Eris!"
And with that, a bright light enveloped me as I felt myself get lifted off the ground and transported into another world.
