PROLOGUE: HOPE

Infinite darkness swirls around me, sinking me deeper and deeper into the never-ending abyss. I can feel my sisters' presence, so close, yet so far at the same time. I reach out endlessly, trying to find them, but I feel nothing. I sense their breathing, the slow stillness only stasis can bring, and know that I am the only one who is tethered to consciousness. For centuries, I too remained in stasis, until I managed to break free from its binds. Alas, I was caught, and forced back into my prison, this time the pain of awareness torturing me with every step.

I don't know how long it has been. It could have been years, decades, centuries even. Here I remain, forced to watch helplessly as my sisters and brothers slumber on, blissfully unaware of the horrors that lurk around us. Only I know that our great civilization has collapsed, that we no longer exist in the mortal world. Once we were powerful and fearsome; now we are nothing but a child's collection of half-baked tales.

I think I have gone mad from this suffocating darkness. For so long, it has turned my mind against me. Sunshine and greenery are but mere memories for me – only darkness remains. And so it shall be, for the end of time.

But the Wizards have underestimated us. They do not know that one of us still lives on in the mortal world, one of the most powerful of us yet to come. Her destiny may be an arduous one, but one that will forever change the world as we know it. And so I cling onto that hope, knowing that it is our only chance of survival.

She will come, I am sure of it. She shall come to liberate us, freeing us from this dark prison at last. And when she does, she shall no longer be the Last Faerie on Earth. I know, in my heart, that someday, this will come.
