A/N: Alright, first up let me just state a few things. This story is set up in the future and in Princesscallyie's cross over universe. It doesn't follow the canon of the show, at least not completely. So If you're a little lost here you can check out her tumblr and wiki.
You can also check out the Tales Of Mewni Wiki, but if you're new to this story then there might be a few spoilers there. (I only decided to upload this story because DA is being really stupid with their stash writer so I'm moving from there.) You can also go to my tumblr. I've answered a few questioned there but if you have anymore feel free to ask me there. It's Kururu418.
That being said, if you are a new reader I hope bring dropped into this whole thing doesn't scare you off. The Callyieverse (what Princesscallyie calls her crossover) and Tales of Mewni are a pretty fun and exciting ride, and Id' encourage you to give it a chance and check it out. I already have quite a few chapter to upload here so this will probably be the last author's note for a while...
The young girl sighed as she stared out of the window lazily. She looked around twelve or so years old, and had platinum blonde hair tied into a long braided ponytail, covered by a tiara with a blue jewel on her head. She wore a sapphire blue dress, one that matched her eyes, and that befit someone of her royal status.
The thing that stood out most however were the red bird wing shaped marks on her cheeks.
As she sat in the window and stared out at the gates, she wondered just how long it was going to take for the one she was waiting for to arrive. He'd sent a message saying he'd be back today and he hadn't arrived yet, and she'd been spending forever waiting for him.
Okay, so maybe she's started waiting pretty earlier. He probably hadn't meant by the break of dawn or anything. But she always got worried while she was waiting for him to return.
The young princess always wondered why any of this was necessary. The kingdom of Mewni had always seemed like a peaceful place.
Or at least it tried to be.
She had been taught all about her kingdom's history. The way the Mewmans had come in and taken the land from the monsters. The years of war and prejudice between them. The story of how her mother had done everything in her power to bring them together.
In the end she had been… mostly successful. Most Mewmans and Monsters could now tolerate one another. There were monsters living in the kingdom now, and they more or less got along with everyone else. They had their own Kingdom of monsters, reformed just a few years before she was born, and while they were a bit of a mystery to the other kingdoms, they were on peaceful terms so far.
But not everyone was willing to accept the newfound peace. There were those among Mewmans and Monsters that tried to reignite the war between the two species. Rebels who wanted nothing more than to shatter what her mother worked so hard to achieve.
And it was her brother's job to snuff such rebellion out.
Her big brother was the greatest warrior Mewni had ever seen. Strong, fierce, cool headed. He was the perfect example of what a prince should be. But all that still didn't stop her from worrying about him. He was her brother, and he was jumping headfirst into danger. No matter how certain she was he'd come back, just like he always did, a small part of her always worried.
"Titania? Are you up here dear?"
The girl turned her head and saw an older woman entering the room. She gave her a small smile. "Hello Grandma Moon," she said before looking back out of the window.
Moon walked over towards her with a small laugh. "Waiting for your brother to return?" The young girl nodded. "Titania, you know he'll be fine. Your brother always returns promptly and unharmed. I'm sure this time will be no different."
"I know," she said, still looking for any signs. The message he'd sent said the rebellion had been dealt with, and he was just helping the village they'd taken get back on its feet. But she wouldn't stop worrying until she saw him safe and sound right in front of her.
Moon reached out and put a hand on her shoulder. She knew as much as she tried to comfort her the girl would still worry. Besides, she too was worried about her grandson returning safely. "Come on now dear. We should head down to the main gates. We can give him a proper greeting there," she said.
Titania kept staring for a while, and then smiled and nodded. "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea," she said before getting up to her feet.
The two made their way out of the room and down towards the courtyard. The castle of the Butterfly Kingdom had changed very little over the years. A few new pictures here and there, but other than that it was practically the same as it ever was.
Titania, or Nia as most of her friends called her, had always enjoyed running through these halls and causing a ruckus. She could still remember riding her Warnicorn through the hall, and how her brother had scolded her afterwards.
She missed those days. Back when he didn't have to leave at a moment's notice. At first she thought it would be fun. Not having him around to nag her and ruin her mischief. But that feeling quickly turned to worry and fear the first time he came back with an injury. It was a minor one, something he easily shook off. But it still scared her to see him bleeding like that…
As they got down to the courtyard they saw another figure waiting near the gates. This girl was a few years older than Nia, about sixteen. Her light blue skin color made her stand out among the other two royals, and her bright green kelp like hair flowed down to her mid back. She was wearing a purple royal looking dark blue dress, and like Nia she had a tiara on her head.
She turned towards them, her seafoam green eyes locking with Nia's. "Princess Nia," she said nodding towards the fellow royal.
"Maria!" Nia ran over and hugged the girl, not even bothering with any sort of royal formality. Maria was the princess of the Waterfolk kingdom. The girl was practically her sister, and she had hoped someday she'd be her sister-in-law. "How have you been?"
The older girl smiled back at her. "I've been doing fine. It's so good to see you," she said before looking up at Moon. She bowed her head and curtsied. "Lady Moon."
Moon smiled and walked over to her, giving her a hug. "Hello dearie. It's so nice to see you doing well. I assume you came to wait for Asterossa?" she asked.
The girl's cheeks lit up. She looked down at the ground nervously. "Uh… yes. I just… I wanted to make sure he was okay. He sent me a message saying he was alright, but I just wanted to make sure."
Moon let out an amused giggle. "How sweet. Young love at its finest." The statement made the young princess blush even further, and Nia covered her mouth to keep from laughing. "Such a lucky boy he is. Having you two waiting to greet him the moment he returns." As if on cue, a loud horn went off, and the front gates began to open. "Speak of the devil."
Nia grew an excited look, while Maria nervously fiddled with her hair. When the gates opened, a number of royal soldiers began making their way inside. Among the royal forces were a mixture of Monsters and Mewmans, who all sported the emblem of the Butterfly Kingdom on their armor.
Some of them were injured, and were being helped by others. Some looked just plain tired, and others were already taking off their armor. Nia was used to seeing this. Their kingdom had become efficient in calming or shutting down rebellions, but it was still a tiring job, and it took their warriors away from their homes and families.
Most of the time they came, reported in, and headed right home. Something that her mother gladly allowed given the circumstances.
They greeted the royal women as they walked by, and Nia answered back politely, though she kept her eye out for who she was really looking for. Soon enough she had spotted him.
"Astro!"
The young man looked up the moment he heard the voice. He was a fairly tall boy, who looked about the same age as Maria. He had teal colored hair that looked messy at the moment, and greyish purple colored eyes. He was wearing a set of purple knight-like armor that was covered in scratches and dents, and he carried a sword at his side.
Like Nia, he had an emblem on each cheek. But rather than wings, there were two purple skulls.
Nia ran up to him and quickly grabbed him into a hug. "Astro! I'm so glad you're back!" she said hugging him tightly. She felt like a huge weight was lifted off of her chest.
He smiled before hugging her back. Every time he came back from a mission she'd be right here to greet him at the gate. "I missed you too Nia," he said as he patted her on the head.
"How did it go? Did you kick rebel butt?" she asked excitedly. Now that she knew he was okay, she wanted to hear all the juicy details about his adventures.
He chuckled. "I'll tell you about everything later. For now, I need to report to mother," he said as he began walking again. He stopped however when he saw the Moon. "Lady Moon," he said as he began to kneel down in front of her.
She reached out and cupped his chin, stopping him. "Come now, there's no need for that," she said before pulling him into a hug. "I'm glad you've returned safely Astro. Your sister was very worried about you. And so was Princess Maria."
Astro looked confused, but then finally noticed the presence of the sea princess. The emblems on his cheeks lit up. "Princess Maria…" he said stunned. "Uh… did you…?"
She smiled back shyly. "I came back to make sure you returned safely, Prince Astro," she said twirling her hair around her finger. "I mean, our kingdoms do have an alliance. It's only polite that I make sure you come back unharmed."
Nia snickered at the flimsy excuse. Every kingdom in Mewni had an alliance with one another. "Well, I'm honored," Astro said bowing. "Um, would you like to stay for dinner? I mean, I have to report to my mother first, but…"
"Oh, I wouldn't want to intrude."
"You wouldn't be!" he said quickly. He realized how desperate he sounded and coughed nervously. "I-I mean… it's only right to return your gesture with one of my own. Please stay, we'd be happy to have you."
Maria blushed deeper. "Okay," she muttered.
Moon and Nia just watched the two standing there nervous. Eventually however Astro had to pull himself away and head back to the castle. Nia began following after him. "We'll come get you in a little bit! Moms gonna want to throw a feast!" she cheered.
Star Butterfly was a queen who was greatly loved by her people. Now, to be fair, most of the queens before her were also loved by the people. But she was known for being the most approachable. The air of royalty and authority that her mother and the queens before her carried wasn't really there.
Not that she didn't have an air of leadership about her. It was just… well, she came off as more of a friend than a ruler. Her bubbly personality tended to put others at ease, and made them want to follow her.
But one probably wouldn't be able to tell that by looking at her kids. At least not Astro.
Nia had taken right after her mother. She wasn't quite as silly, and knew how to get serious when it really came down to it. But for the most part she was just as bubbly and upbeat as her mother was at her age.
Astro on the other hand. Well, he was a bit more straight laced. He always carried himself in a dignified way. Even now, when standing before his mother, he'd made sure to look the part of the perfect son. His hair had been neatly combed and slicked back, and his armor had been swapped out for a purple jacket with golden buttons, white pants, and brown boots.
He still had his sword with him, something he never let leave his side. The boy had acted more like Moon than he did Star, preferring to be polite, graceful, and refined. He played the role of a prince perfectly, and the people of Mewni adored him every bit as much as they did Nia.
Astro knelt down as he stood in front of the throne. "Mother," he said, bowing his head.
Star sighed and stood up, walking down towards him. The moment he stood back up she grabbed him into a hug. "For Stump's sake Astro, I'm your mother. You don't have to be so formal all of the time you know," she said before giving him a kiss on the forehead. "It's good to see you back in one piece."
He blushed slightly. That fact that he was sixteen, and the most skilled warrior in the kingdom, had never made his mother think twice about coddling him. "It's good to see you too mother."
Nia snickered at the scene. "So, how did everything go?" Star asked.
"The rebels were restrained and brought to prison with any casualties on either side. There were a few injuries to our men when they brought out some rather… disturbing looking weapons. They were strange. Some type of… gun or something. I didn't recognize them."
Star looked at him curiously. "Really? We'll have to send someone to look into that." She couldn't quite figure out why rebels would be carrying some type of unknown weapons. Not unless they were getting them from another dimension. But nobody outside royals and the magic council should have access to any dimensional scissors.
"Besides that, nothing unusual. Just another band of monsters hating mewmans trying to cause trouble," Astro said, shaking his head. All this effort to make peace, and people were trying to ruin it because of something that happened years ago. It was pathetic.
"Good work Astro. I'm very proud of you."
"Thank you mother."
Star began heading towards the door and gesturing for them to follow. "Well, now that that's out of the way let's get something to eat. I had the chefs make a big dinner for your return."
"Yay! Food!" Nia cheered, raising her fist. "And we can hear all about your adventures! I want all of the details! Every last one!"
He smiled and patted her head. "And you'll get them."
Soon enough everyone made their way to the dining room. Star sat at the end of the table of course, while Nia and Astro sat to her left and right. Moon and River were sitting beside Nia, while Maria had taken a seat beside Astro.
Everyone had begun eating, and while Astro had wanted to wait a bit Nia had begged him to start telling about his adventures. And when Maria had said she'd be interested as well, he had totally buckled. "So, I disarmed the leader while the rest of the guard began sweeping around for any stragglers and-"
"Oh c'mon!" Nia said excitedly. "Get into details! How did you subdue him? I'm sure it was a super awesome sword fight right? I mean I bet you were like ha! Stab! Stab! Lunge!" she said as she moved her fork as if it were a sword.
Moon sighted. "Nia dear, please don't use your fork as a sword."
Nia pouted. "Yes grandma…"
River laughed. "Oh come now dear! Let the girl have her fun! She's simply eager to hear her brother regale us with tales of glory and victory!" the former king of Mewni said pounding his chest with his fist. "I'm sure he slayed many foes on the field of battle! Didn't you my boy?"
Astro shook his head. "No grandfather, I didn't kill anyone. I tend to try and avoid that…"
"Oh… well I'm sure it was glorious all the same!"
Maria poked at the food on her plate as she hesitantly spoke up. "So, how is the sword holding up then Astro?" she asked.
Astro smiled. Even now he had his sword, named 'Ocean's Kiss', sitting against his chair.
He'd always carried it around for two reasons. The first was because he'd vowed to always be ready to protect his sister, and he meant to keep that promise. There wasn't a single moment that he wouldn't be ready to defend her.
The second was because it was a precious gift he got from Maria after he'd passed his knight's training. It was a sword crafted from a special magical crystal found deep beneath the oceans of Mewni. She had gotten it for him so he could protect himself. Not that he couldn't do that with a regular sword, but it had meant a lot to him.
"It's still saving my life Maria," he said, patting it.
"That's a relief," she said with a smile. "The safer you are, the better."
Nia suddenly began making kissing noises, and Astro blushed and glared at her. Maria's face lit up as well, and Moon smiled and shook her head while River laughed and banged his hand against the table. "Nia, stop teasing your brother," Star said, though she was fighting back an amused smile of her own.
"Yes mom," Nia said before stuffing the last forkful of food in her mouth. Her table manners had obviously been inherited from her grandfather. The girl's stomach was like a garbage disposal. "Mom, can I ask you something?"
Star hummed. "Yes?"
"How old were you when you went to earth?" she asked.
Star stopped eating, and then looked at her confused. "Uh… I was fourteen I think?" she asked, looking at her mother. Moon nodded. "Yep, fourteen. The day I got the wand," she said.
Nia began to grow a smile. "And would you say your time on Earth made you… I don't know, more prepared to rule? A better person?" she asked cheekily.
Star narrowed her eyes. "I feel… I feel like you're going somewhere with this, but I can't quite place it," she said tapping her chin with her finger. At this point everyone else at the table was looking at Nia curiously. Astro had a very bad feeling in his stomach right now.
"I was thinking that maybe, possibly, perhaps… I could spend a little time on Earth myself."
Everyone went wide eyed. River dropped his turkey leg mid bite. Nia felt their gazes on her and started to shrink in her chair. She had been planning this for a while now. But in hindsight maybe dinner wasn't the best time to drop something like this…
Star looked a little caught up in her thoughts. She wasn't sure exactly what to say to such a sudden request. Luckily for her, Astro had a response ready.
"Absolutely not!" the teen shouted standing up from his chair.
Everyone turned towards him and saw him frowning down at her. Nia frowned back. "Well, I'm glad I got your answer big bro, but I was kind of asking mom," she sassed.
"Earth?! That place is… it's dangerous! There's no way it's safe for someone like you! Besides, mom said she had the wand when she went there, and it's still two years before you're old enough to inherit it!" he pointed out.
"I know how old I am Astro…"
"Why would you even want to go to that place?! It's just some big rock where humans spend all their time fighting with one another! They're just a bunch of renegades!"
Nia crossed her arms and pouted. "Oh come on, you're totally exaggerating. It's not like we don't fight here. You just came back from a battle."
"Me subduing a few unruly rebels, and entire Nations going to war with each other are hardly the same thing Nia! That dimension is wild , unruly , free for all!"
"I just want to go and see what it's like. Spend a little time there. Get to know some of the people. Uncle Tom and Aunt Margo let Vera go!" she argued.
"That's more of a reason NOT to go!" he yelled in disbelief. Both Nia and Maria glared at him after that statement. It was no secret that he wasn't all that fond of the princess of the underworld. But she was sort of like a big sister to Nia, and a close friend of Maria. He shrunk under their gazes. "I mean… I… I'm just saying-"
"Well, what you say doesn't really matter now does it? It's up to mom," Nia said before turning to Star, who still looked like a deer caught in headlights. "What do you think mom?"
Everyone turned towards Star who grew wide eyed. "Me? Oh, right, me… uh… Nia, I'm not so sure about this. When I went to Earth it was to learn how to use my magic in a place that wouldn't affect the kingdom. But you have some time-"
"I can start practicing now!" Nia said quickly. "So I'm not fourteen, who cares? The sooner I learn how to use it the better right? Granny Eclipsa said I'm already talented. I bet I could master it by the time it's officially mine anyway!"
Astro groaned. "You realize you're trying to break years of tradition don't you?"
"Mom's broken plenty of traditions!"
"That's true…" Moon muttered as Star giggled nervously.
"That's not the same and you know it! Earth is dangerous Nia. What if something happens to you? What if you get hurt or worse? It's not safe for you. I'm not letting you!"
"For the last time, it's MOM's decision!"
"Enough!"
They both stopped and turned towards Star, who was now standing up. "Astro, Nia is right. This is not your decision. What she's allowed to do and where she's allowed to go is up to me," she said sternly.
Astro looked surprised, and while he wanted to argue, he simply bowed his head. "Of course not. Sorry mother…" he muttered. He was balling his fist up in frustration.
Nia smirked until Star turned towards her. "And Nia… give me a little time to answer. I have to think carefully about something like this," she explained.
"Yes mom."
With that settled Star let out a sigh. Astro spoke up. "Mother. I'm very tired from the journey back. Could I be excused?" he asked, still looking down at his feet.
Star frowned. She had felt bad about having to talk to him like that, especially in front of Maria. She knew he was only worried about his sister. And making him stay here would only make his mood even worse. "Go ahead," she said.
Astro turned around and headed out, and Nia frowned and looked down at her plate. She too had felt bad about what had happened, but her brother could be so overprotective sometimes. She wished he could just chill out every now and then.
As he left Maria looked after him with concern. Moon quickly noticed and spoke up. "Perhaps you should go check on him dear. I'm sure he'd enjoy your company after everything he's been through the past week."
Maria looked towards Star, who smiled and nodded, and then got up and followed him. When she walked out, Star sighed and frowned, and Nia looked at her plate guiltily. So much for a peaceful family dinner…
