Setting: Black family home

Halloween 1981

The night was quiet, like any other. The moon shone brightly over the dimly lit streets of Godric's Hollow , with a small breeze blowing through the trees. There was a chill to the air, sure that is normal given it was the end of October, but it felt disconcerting. Something was different that All Hallows Eve, different from any other. Everyone was tense and uneasy, even the muggles who were oblivious to the raging war, knew something was different. Something was going to happen, something big, but no one knew what.

"Marlene, Marlene!" Sirius screamed as he sprinted down the brick paved road. She had to be okay, she just had too, his wife, and his little girl! He knew he should have done more, if only there had been more time! Poor Harry, he thought, oh why was life so unfair! Tears streamed down Sirius' face as he neared the door. He killed them! Peter! How could this have happened?! After all this time, Peter would be the one to rat them out, how could he have done this to them, to him, to Lily and James! Oh the faces of Lily and James, he would never get those images out of his head, poor Harry. "Marlene!" He screamed again as he reached for the door. It felt like his heart was beating a thousand times a minute, if only he wouldn't have installed those anti-apparition wards he thought. He opened the door with a BANG and stormed into the house. "Marlene! Marlene!" Wand at the ready he looked through the first few rooms of what used to be his home, there was broken glass and bits of everything all over the floor. "Marlene!" He screamed again.

"In here dear cousin." His heart dropped, the hair on the back of his neck stood up. He knew that voice. How could he forget that voice? The high pitched tone of insanity was not easily forgotten. Bellatrix.

"What are you doing here?" Sirius said, though he could barely speak. He knew what she was doing there, he just didn't want to believe it.

"Oh me, I'm just cleaning up your mess, covering my tracks and making it look like you killed your wife." She said with a cackle. She smirked and gestured towards a pile of rubble a little ways away.

"There is nothi-" Sirius then turns and looks closer, he then sees the body. The body of his love, his whole world, there, Marlene Elizabeth Mckinnon Black, laid dead in front of the fireplace. Sirius' face dropped, he quickly paled, his whole world had just been rocked. It was like all time stopped, he had already gone through the death of his closest friends, and now his wife as well, all in one night.

"I want to make sure you end up in Azkaban, I wouldn't want Peter to take the fall for your crimes would I?" The utterly insane witch said with such joy, it made Sirius fume. He then raised his wand at Bellatrix, full of a mix of emotions, the strongest being hate, rage, and sadness.

"Oh Sirius, put your wand down, it's all over."

"You're right it is, for you, your precious Dark Lord is dead."

"Stupify!"

Bellatrix then fell to the floor with a loud thud which echoed throughout the house. He lowered his wand, exhausted in more ways than one. He then turned back to Marlene, where she laid still near the fireplace.

"No. No. No! This can't be real, there is no way this can be real, I am dreaming, surely it is just a night terror." Sirius knew better though, this was not just a night terror, this was real life. His best friend, his brother, the one who took him in as family during his time of need, James Potter was dead. Lily Evans, his surrogate sister, the girl one of his best friends was in love with, she too was now dead. Then the love of his life, Marlene Mckinnon, the girl he met at Hogwarts, through Lily actually, was now dead as well. And who was to blame? Peter Pettigrew! Sirius was furious! Peter, one they thought to be their best friend, helped murder everyone he loved! Everyone he-

"Wait.." Sirius thought out loud.

"Vivian! Where is Vivian!" Sirius then frantically searched the house, but his precious little girl was nowhere to be found. What could Marlene have done with her? Was she still alive? He had to find her, and Harry as well.

He took one last look back at Marlene as tears still steadily streamed down his cheeks, he had to find Vivian and Harry, he also had to find Pettigrew. He would hunt Pettigrew down, even if it was the last thing he ever did, he couldn't let James, Lily, and Marlene die in vain.

Setting: Remus Lupin's house

Halloween 1981

Remus Lupin sat at his kitchen table sipping on his chilled butterbeer, his leg was bouncing faster than ever as the clock struck ten and still no message from Sirius or James. He felt sick to his stomach, he had been sipping on that same butterbeer since six that evening and it wasn't even close to being empty. Something felt wrong, very wrong. Last time he spoke to either of them was when they left his house that afternoon after having lunch, all four of them were there, including Peter. When they left, they had all promised to send each other letters after dinner to ensure one another were safe, so where were their letters?! The tick of the clock grew louder and louder as Remus Lupin slammed his fists down on the table. "Where could they be?!" He exclaimed.

Before he could continue voicing his worries, a loud bang followed by an ear-piercing scream echoed through the small house. Remus jumped up, sending his chair flying across the room, reaching for his wand, he flung the kitchen door open. "Show yourself! I know someone is here, I have a wand and I am not afraid to use it!" he screamed. No reply. The house was then eerily quiet, wand at the ready he decided to search the house. One by one he kicked each bedroom and bathroom door open, no one was there, it was then when he heard a faint noise, almost a whimper coming from the living room. Holding his wand ready to fight whatever evil was in the next room, he kicked the door open, "Drop your wands!" he yelled. Only then did he realize it was not Voldemort or a death eater that had entered his house causing that noise, it was only a baby.

"Vivian?! What- How-" Remus said with an unsteady voice. He looked down at the child who was alone in this living room, she was only around a year old, how could she have gotten here? She raised her arms up in the air signaling she wanted her godfather to pick her up, he reached down and scooped her into his arms. As he looked at her closer he saw there were tiny tears rolling down her cheeks, she was also covered in dirt, and is that blood?! He then quickly checked the child making sure the blood was not her own, it was all over her arms, legs, and clothes, but he found no wound. "No-" He said in a voice so small you almost couldn't hear it. He then looked at where the child had been sitting moments ago, it was at the base of the fireplace. He did not want to think of whose blood this was on young Vivian, or what she had been through. Still sick to his stomach, for the time being he decided he had to take care of the child, it was his goddaughter afterall. He gave himself this task so he would not think further into how or why Vivian had been brought here, because he already had a hunch what had happened, and if he was correct, something was very wrong.

"Let's go get you cleaned up Vivian, everything is going to be okay." he said while looking at the child who was staring back at him with a blank expression, he nodded almost as if he was reassuring himself as well.

Setting: Remus Lupin's house

November 6th , 1981

The sun shone brightly in the sky, not a gray cloud in sight. To the average muggle it would have seemed like a wonderful day, but this wasn't the case for the other world, the wizarding world. It has been six days since the murder of Marlene Mckinnon and James and Lily Potter, it was still hard for most of the wizard folk to comprehend. On one hand, their son Harry somehow lived through the killing curse and defeated Voldemort, on the other hand, many many people were now dead, like Lily, James, and Marlene. Sirius Black was now thrown in Azkaban for murdering 3 of his best friends and his wife and daughter, all of the bodies had been recovered except for Peter Pettigrew and Baby Vivian Black. If only they knew…

"Vivian, come back here!" Remus yelled, chasing his goddaughter around the kitchen trying to force her to put some clothes on. The one year old was surprisingly fast, as her magic kept knocking things off the counter and turning her godfather's hair all colors of the rainbow. Remus had kept himself busy with Vivian, especially once he heard the news, he was devastated to say the least. First James, Lily, and Marlene being murdered, then Peter, and then hearing Harry would have to go live with those muggles, ugh it made him sick to think about it. From what Lily and James had told him, Lily's sister Petunia was an absolute witch, and not the magical kind, she most definitely was a muggle. Remus knew the day would come that someone would find out Vivian had not died because her mother sent her through the floo, and she would be taken from him. All because of his condition. He wished he could stay with her forever. The thought of being torn apart from the only precious memory you had left of your closest friends, and her having to go live with strangers made him very upset. He had to come up with some way to allow her to stay, he knew someone would come to take her, he just didn't know when-

'DING DONG'. The doorbell chime rang throughout the house. Remus scooped Vivian up and ran to the back of the house, he placed her down in one of the bedrooms with some toys. "Stay here Vivian." He told her as he cracked the door. He then slowly walked towards the entrance of the house, wand in hand and hidden behind a wall. 'DING DONG'. The doorbell chimed again. Remus walked to the door and peered out the peephole, all he saw was a gray old looking tabby cat. He cautiously opened the door a crack and checked outside with his wand gripped tightly in his hand, he then opened the door a bit more and the gray tabby came scurrying in. He turned around to grab something off the shelf to feed the cat-

"Hello Mr. Lupin, pleasure to see you again." A voice from behind him said. He jumped and turned around, aiming his wand at the now woman standing in his kitchen.

"Professor Mcgonagall?" Remus asked cautiously, there was such a thing as polyjuice potion, and he wasn't letting a death eater in disguise kill him or Vivian.

"Yes, Remus it is me, you can lower your wand." she said slowly

"How do I know that?" Lupin said cautiously.

"In second year you, James, Sirius, and Peter came into my office late at night just to see if I really was a cat. When I turned from cat to human, you all screamed and Sirius said, 'not my hair!' Then he passed out." She said patiently

"It is you." He said lowering his wand. The thought of James and Peter made him feel a deep sadness, and Sirius a deep deep anger. "What are you doing here Professor?" he asked considerably lower than before.

"I think you know Mr. Lupin, you just don't want to hear it. I am sorry. Remus, how long has she been here? " She said sadly. She didn't want to take her away from him, she really didn't. She knew he could take care of her, but it was orders she was given by Dumbledore himself.

"Since Halloween night, Marlene sent her to me..before that coldblooded monster killed her. You can't take her! I am her legal binding Godfather!" Remus said. He wasn't going to just let the Professor take her!

"Remus she can't stay here, you know that. I know you could take care of her, but that one week you are gone, who will?" Mcgonagall said sadly, she really did not want to do this to Remus. Remus started to pace back and forth like an untamed animal ready to attack his prey.

"Why not? I could get a nanny, a babysitter, something!" He said angrily.

"You know the ministry won't allow it." Mcgonagall said softly trying to calm him down.

"I love her! And if you think I'm going to let you take her to some horrible pureblood relatives, you've got another thing coming! I'm not letting you take my Vivian like you took Harry to the worst sort of muggles! I can't believe you left Harry with those muggles! I know you know that Lily and James wouldn't approve of Harry living there!" He said with rage.

"Remus I didn't want to leave Harry but we had no choice, you know most of all, the death eaters will stop at nothing to kill Harry. I hate this as much as you do but you know he needs that blood protection." She said looking him straight in the eye. She was willing him to understand. She didn't want to do this, she loved these babies, and their parents. But if it is what needs to be done to keep them safe, so be it.

"Blood protection?! What are you talking about Mcgonagall?" Remus stopped pacing and stared at her.

"Oh Remus no one told you?"

"Who would have told me when everyone I love or care about is six feet under or in azkaban?!" He was filled with rage again.

"Remus, because Harry's parents died protecting him, he is protected by his mother's love so long as he primarily lives with a blood relative. If he lives with you, he is not protected, and any random wizard or witch can come by and kill him . If he lives with a blood relative, it is like a shield, or a bubble, nothing can touch him until he is 17. Vivian on the other hand does not have the blood protection, but you know people would get suspicious if Remus Lupin, overnight just now has a baby living with him." Mcgonagall explained.

"I-" Remus started to say, but they were interrupted by a babbling Vivian running into the room.

"Moomy!" Vivian whined. She stood in front of Remus reaching her hands up to him wanting to be held. He picked her up and held her close, he didn't want to lose her, but he didn't have much choice in the matter. Mcgonagall made a logical argument, people would be suspicious, and knowing that is true is what angered him the most. He couldn't keep her, but he wanted to, he couldn't just give Marlene's only child away! Especially now that her father revealed the true monster he is, and now she would be going to his family!

"Please Mcgonagall, there must be another way! Any other way?! I can find someone to keep her that week, we can figure it out!" Remus begged. Mcgonagall sighed, she really hated to do this, her throat became dry and she fought back tears. She knew this wasn't right, she knew they could figure something out, but she wouldn't want the child in danger, not by Remus, but of being found. She feared people would actually be suspicious, and word would travel, who knew what death eaters were still out there. If she was correct, the family young Vivian would be going to no longer had any ties with the wizarding world, while as right now Remus was right in the spotlight.

"Remus, I truly am so sorry, I hate to do this to you and her, but you know as well as I that there could still be a certain type of people out there. The victory in the war and the terrible tragedies that have happened are both closely linked to you, as I am sure you are aware this has caused your name to be very popular currently in the wizarding world. Word would spread, people would find out that somehow 'REMUS LUPIN war survivor, close friends with murder Sirius Black, and the murdered James and Lily Potter, Marlene Mckinnon Black, and Peter Pettigrew' now somehow has a baby?" She faltered while saying those names of her former students who were killed. They didn't deserve it, any of it. They should still be here raising their babies, they shouldn't even have to think about where to place a child. And to think about Sirius, she just couldn't think about his treachery.

"There is no other way?" Remus said as his voice grew more strained. He looked down at his goddaughter in his arms, she was completely oblivious as to what was about to happen.

"No Remus, whether we like it or not, Dumbledore has already made the decision. As soon as I get back to the castle with Vivian, he will be contacting her new family. Please, I know this is hard, it is for me too, I wish I never had to do this." Mcgonagall now had a visible tear running down her cheek. Remus looked at her, and for the first time saw his old professor cry. She didn't want to take his Vivian away, this was just her job. He looked down at Vivian, and forced himself to hold in the tears for her.

"Vivian, sweetheart, I love you so much." He sniffled. No he couldn't cry, not in front of her. Vivian looked at him and smiled as she hugged him tighter. "Vivian dear, this is Professor Mcgonagall, she is very nice and will be taking you to a nice new big house, you will love it!" Remus said, trying to fake being happy, he couldn't allow Vivian to be sad because of him. With a wave of his wand, the little stuff he had for Vivian was now packed in a bag, he handed it to Mcgonagall. Mcgonagall gave him a sad look. He hated this, he hated every part of this. These people would probably be terrible, horrible for her, he would figure out some way to get her back, somehow, but for now, he had to give in. He hugged his goddaughter tight.

"Moony will always love you Vivian. Never forget that. I will always be here if you need me." He said, holding in tears, one threatening to escape.

"Lobe you too Moomy." Vivian said, she hugged him back. Remus then kissed her on her forehead, he wanted to scream, cry, and tear the whole world apart, but he couldn't. He had to give her up, it was either do it this way, or tramatize Vivian by her being taken forcefully. He gave Vivian one last hug and then handed her to Mcgonagall.

"No! Moomy! Bye bye Moomy." Vivian said not knowing whether to be excited or cry. She looked up at the tall woman with the funny looking hat as a tear rolled down her cheek.

"Goodbye Remus. And for what it's worth, I really don't want to do this, she loves you though, never doubt it." Mcgonagall said as she started opening the door.

"Wait! Will I ever see her again?" Remus asked, now with a tear rolling down his face. Mcgonagall froze, knowing the answer was most likely no, but she couldn't tell him that, he had lost every single one of his friends, and now she was ripping away his goddaughter.

"We never know what the future holds Mr. Lupin, anything is possible with just a little hope." Mcgonagall said as she walked out the door with the small child in her hand. And with a loud 'POP', for the first time since Remus was eleven, he was alone.
