Obi Wan didn't much feel like explaining to Ahsoka exactly what had happened at the temple right now. Thankfully though, Ahsoka didn't seem to feel that now was the time to ask questions. Anakin didn't seem much capable of talking at all, and so they proceeded in silence.
They soon had picked up Senator Amidala who was accompanied by three clones. Rex and two others who introduced themselves as Fives and Echo. They did not attack. Living proof that Ahsoka's explanation about the control chips was correct, but Obi Wan couldn't muster up any enthusiasm for this development.
In all honesty, Obi Wan didn't think he could ever be enthusiastic or hopeful or happy again. Not when his whole world had been utterly annihilated to an extent he could never even have imagined. It was ironic - through his missions as a Jedi he had seen entire worlds, entire peoples and cultures destroyed. In a galaxy big enough, it was bound to happen. And yet, that had always been something that happened to other people. Less fortunate people. Not to the rich core worlds and certainly not to the Jedi. And yet, here he was. The last sad remnant of an order that was now dead. Still following its teachings even as it struck him that those teachings probably no longer mattered. It felt like he was just running on autopilot, doing what his duty as a Jedi compelled him to because he didn't know what else to do.
And I'm failing miserably, Obi Wan thought. If Anakin goes back to Palpatine…
But no. He wouldn't let that happen. And it wasn't the Jedi way to kill a defenseless prisoner, so he had done the right thing according to the Jedi Code. But that assumes that the Jedi are in a position to be able to hold a prisoner, an unhelpful voice reminded him. Even under the best of circumstances, holding a force sensitive prisoner was no simple matter.
At the moment, Obi Wan couldn't even bring himself to take the basic steps of cuffing Anakin and taking his lightsaber. Not that it appeared to make any difference right now. Anakin seemed quite incapable of independent movement at the moment. He sat, his head on Padme's shoulder, staring blankly out the viewport.
The Resolute was still in orbit over Coruscant, its hangar doors wide open as if in invitation. Obi Wan didn't like that. It seemed all too easy. Another trap. Nonetheless, Ahsoka steered them cautiously towards it.
"Master Yoda," Obi Wan called through the secure comlink. "Master Yoda, have you secured control of the Resolute?"
A moment passed. "He's not responding," Obi Wan said, stating the obvious.
"Well maybe he just…" Ahsoka started.
"We need to get to that ship now!" Anakin exclaimed all of a sudden, speaking for the first time since back in the temple when he'd demanded that Obi Wan kill him.
Ahsoka asked no questions, but got the ship into motion immediately, full throttle towards the Resolute's hangar.
Then, a moment before it happened, Obi Wan saw it too.
Mere seconds before they reached the Resolute, the hangar doors shut, and the ship entered hyperspace, the entire future of the Jedi order on board.
"No!" Anakin shouted. "He promised me… he promised," Anakin muttered between sobs.
"Palpatine is a liar who will say anything to get you to do what he wants, and you fell right into his trap," said Obi Wan cooly.
Padme glared at him. "Obi Wan! Right now! How could you?"
Anakin shook his head. "No, he's right… all my fault," he muttered, inching away from her as he said it.
Padme stared at him while Anakin did his best to try and sink into the floor. "Anakin, what are you talking about? You can't be serious." She turned to Ahsoka as if for help.
Ahsoka just frowned.
"Sorry to interrupt," Rex said sharply. "But there are two GAR shuttles on our scopes, and we really can't stay here. Where are we going?"
Everyone looked at Obi Wan expectantly, but he didn't have an answer. What was the next step? What came after this? Start their lives as fugitives? He wasn't ready to accept that, but he also felt like he was completely out of ideas.
To Obi Wan's surprise, Anakin had an answer though. "Tatooine," he whispered. "Her mother is there, and I have to… to…" Anakin trailed off, unable to finish the thought, but Obi Wan nodded understanding.
At the very least, he was relieved to have a new destination, a next step.
