Chapter Four

4.1

Usagi wanted to feel a little angry that Mina had called Rei and Ami to check up on her and have a girls date. They were all interested in the pregnancy and the birth of Usagi's child but the fact that she had somehow sent Mamoru away made them worry about that. If there was danger, and it seemed to be a time for danger, wouldn't you want to have the person who loves you the most beside you to help you? They all adored Usagi, their Sailor Moon, but they had all wanted lives or families or careers of their own. To see Usagi at this stage of her pregnancy without Mamoru felt weird.

"So, have you spoken to him?" Ami ventured and Usagi looked down and away not knowing the correct way to respond to that. "I mean…"

"I've spoken to him," Usagi nodded and then bowed her head and allowed herself to cry softly. "Not really. I mean I told him to leave me alone but I never wanted him gone. I just…I know that if I touch him he'll hurt. I saw it and -"

"Just with every other time," Rei replied. "You thought about what was best for him and sent him away."

"I can't believe he hasn't forced himself in here," Makoto commented. "Usa, I don't think that you're listening to reason here. If he loves you then isn't it best to just let him keep on loving you."

"He'll want to sign the birth certificate at least," Mina added as Ami turned to her friend.

"If he doesn't know the reason why you're pushing him away then he could fall into that misunderstanding. As much as each of us would like to say we know what is in the future, we can't say that and the future could be changed easily. If you continue to push him away it could lead to him getting annoyed at you and then…I don't' want to say this of him but he could hate you."

"Ouch" Mina said, "Ami, that was harsh. I wouldn't even expect for Rei to put it like that."

"I's common sense but thank you," Rei told her and Usagi put a hand on her heart.

"More than anything I just want to keep Mamo-chan safe and happy and -" Usagi said as she looked down at her lap and then felt tears falling down her cheeks and dropping onto her belly. "It's too late now," she told them. "He's gone and I should forget him. You're right," she laughed weakly. "If he just thinks that all I'm doing is pushing him away then there is no way he would want to come back.

"If you want him to come back," Rei stated firmly. "You should just tell him that you want him to come back."

Usagi shook her head, "I can't and I don't want anyone else to say it to him either. I need to have him keep away until I know what is going on myself," she gave a firm nod at her decision as the rest of the scouts turned to one another unsure about this.

Mamoru smiled slightly as he felt rain drops falling on him. He shook his head, he had forgotten to bring an umbrella but it was only a short walk to the hotel. Hopefully he wouldn't get too wet. He could always stay at the café he had been in until the rain stopped but he needed to rest. Becoming a doctor, a proper full doctor, was an exhausting process but not so much as wandering around in a tuxedo complete with top hat and mask.

As he stepped out, he looked up surprised to see Ami standing there. "I was looking for you," the younger girl asked which was surprising to him. He looked up at the sky and laughed. Most likely a coincidence that he was meeting with the scout or guardian who had water powers whilst it was raining. She was carrying an umbrella though.

"You were looking for me?" Mamoru asked with a slight smile glad that someone seemed to care about him. He moved closer to Ami and felt the raindrops on his head. "You mind if we walk under where it's covered?" he requested and Ami nodded.

"I'm only here because I think that it's important that you know what's going on," she told him and Mamoru looked at her feeling a little twinge at his heart.

"You know what's going on with Usa?" he asked, the pain and concern in his eyes and a slight amount of fear. He looked forwards. "I don't mean to overstep but could you give me any information on what I've done or what I might have said that has scared her off so badly. If I could only fix what happened then I know that I can make it right and apologize."

Ami stopped. "You haven't done anything," she said simply and Mamoru watched her.

"So, is it the lack of action on my part?" he asked confused. "Is it because she wants me home more. You know how difficult trying to become a doctor is but if this is truly hurting her then I'll figure out some way to solve it."

Ami shook her head again, "Usagi-chan knows how passionate you are and that you just want to help other people. She still sees you as her prince. I mean, you technically are the reborn version of a prince but she loves you deeply. She just doesn't want you around because she doesn't want to hurt you."

Mamoru bowed his head with a melancholic smile. "Doesn't she understand that pushing me away hurts me far more than any physical pain I could feel?" he asked as he remembered the small shocks and pinches he had thought he had been able to hide. He hadn't done such a good job of that after all. "You have to understand that no matter what, I will be there for her. Even if she doesn't want to know that I'm looking and listening out for her. I have to be there for her."

Ami nodded, "Good." She looked down, "Usagi-chan asked us not to say anything to you and although we all told her that she should tell you especially since you're now her husband that -"

"Understood. I'll continue watching her from the shadows until she hopefully tells me herself but if you could, I would like to be there for the birth of our daughter and hold her in my arms as soon as she's born. I'm really looking forward to being a father." Mamoru said as he tried to figure out how he could prove to Usagi that even if he did get hurt, they belonged to one another.

Ami nodded and smiled, "I'll do my best," she promised.

Usagi woke up and smiled as she smelled crepes being cooked. She really enjoyed that smell especially since Mamoru cooked so well and put his whole heart into it. She froze though. She had told him to leave and so he wouldn't be here, right? She stared at the alarm clock, it was a Saturday and so although she hadn't had to have been up, she had slept in later than she had wanted to.

As she came down the stairs, she saw a couple of bowls with fresh fruit and some other toppings for crepes on the table. She frowned as she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and then turned to see Mamoru actually making the crepes whilst wearing an apron. "Mamo-kun?" Usagi asked as she backed away from him. "I told you to leave."

"I decided that I didn't want to," he told her with a half-smile. "Now, you should take a seat because I'm almost done with this and I don't have to go into the hospital today until the afternoon."

Usagi stared at him in disbelief. Had he somehow forgotten about this past week? If he hadn't, this didn't seem like him. He wouldn't cook her breakfast like this after what she had put him through. Yes, he did cook for her often especially during the pregnancy but she had told him to leave her alone. Why was he here?

"Mamo-kun," Usagi said as she stared at him and didn't know what to say. "Do you…are you feeling okay?"

"Not particularly," he said with a smile.

Usagi nodded slowly. Why was he acting like this if he wasn't feeling okay. This just seemed strange. "Are you really…you?" she asked and he walked over to her, setting the crepe in front of her before bringing his face close to hers.

"How can I prove that to you?" he asked before putting his hand on her cheek and kissing her. He managed to hide the sharp string that hurt his heart. He wouldn't let her see that pain anymore. Usagi clutched to his hand before letting go. She took a step away from him and saw him smiling to her. She carefully put a hand over her heart and saw him turn.

"Mamo-chan?" she asked before putting her wrist over her eyes so he wouldn't see the tears .She turned from him and he crouched down to look at her as she hastily attempted to dry her eyes. "I'm sorry. Do you hate me now?"

"Usa," Mamoru said softly as he kissed her forehead. "No. Of course I don't hate you. I know that there is danger coming and maybe there is danger already here but I exist so that I can protect you and love you and take care of you. I don't want to leave."

"You're not a dream, are you?" Usagi asked again and Mamoru shook his head.

"No. This isn't a dream. I promise you that we'll get through this together," he said before kissing her however as he did this time it was as if there was some black shadow wrapping around his mind and he crashed to the floor. Taking some deep inhales, he managed to balance himself once again and stood slowly and uneasily. He looked around feeling as if he were in a stupor and then turned to Usagi.

"See, I'm all right," he told her as he saw her fear and she nodded uneasily. She hated being torn between having to leave him and having to acknowledge the truth, something was happening to him because of her.
