A/N: So, I've come to really love Lady Nagant as a character and I haven't seen anything too interesting to me done with her, so this idea was born. Hope you enjoy!
(Years ago, UA meeting room)
Kaina Tsutsumi is sat across from a somewhat imposing man, that man being the current president of the Hero Public Safety Commission. The man cracks a small smile at Kaina and gesture to a cup of tea laid out before her, "Please, have some tea. I believe you may be wondering why I called you here." Kaina nods and takes a sip of her tea, "It's not every day that you get to meet the president of such an important part of the system. What could someone so important want with an ordinary student like me?"
The HPSC president smiles, "Come now, you're a wonderfully smart and capable young lady. Top of your class and one of the few first years to earn a Provisional License this year, you are already showing signs that you'll be an excellent Hero in the future. In anticipation of that, I've come with an offer. For your work study, come work for the Commission. We'll guide you along the path to Heroism and ensure that your future is bright!" The Commission president sighs inwardly, 'It's a shame that what we'll actually be teaching her will lead to a darker place than she imagines, but it must be done to preserve order.'
Kaina gives a sheepish grin and rubs the back of her head, "Actually… I've… already decided on my work study." The president stares dumbfounded, 'What? I thought we got to her first! Who could she possibly have chosen that quickly?' Kaina clears her throat and continues, "Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the offer an all, but I've already got my paperwork lined up with Distance. He's got real long-range skill that I can't pass up, what with me being a sniper."
Distance is a bit of an older Hero, having been part of the second generation of heroes. His quirk, while basic, is powerful and allows him to fight enemies at any distance. The man's quirk is called 'Energy Discharge', and does exactly what it says on the tin. His adaptive techniques and ability to fight where his enemies are worst has won him many battles and the respect of thousands.
The president is speechless, he's lost his golden opportunity. Before he can try to persuade the girl, Kaina checks the time, "Oh, would you look at that! It's about time I went back to class! Thanks again for the invite!" Kaina leaves the shocked president in the room, no knowing that this decision has saved her.
(A Week Later, Distance Headquarters)
A red-haired man with piercing yellow eyes sizes up Kaina in her Hero costume. She's wearing a jumpsuit like outfit with light armor and padding scattered over it, her feet are covered by lightly armored boots, she has pouches at her waist to hold ammunition made for and by her quirk, and she has a scouter like device over her right eye that extends up and over her hair like a horn. Distance's Hero costume is composed of simple armored clothing and a basic face mask.
Distance nods his approval, "A bit flashy for my tastes, but it's useful and protective. I approve." The Hero cracks his neck and brings Kaina inside to a training area. He turns to face her again, "I've heard about you from your peers and the Principal, nice and caring, willing to fight for those close to you. Reminds me a bit of myself, but it also reminds me of my high school roommate. Now, nothing against him currently, he's a fantastic Hero. However, in high school he caused quite a few problems before his girlfriend knocked some sense into him and sent him to anger management. What I'm rambling about here is the fact that everyone can do wrong, and everyone can do right, you need to decide which one is for you."
Kaina nods and stands proudly, a smile on her face, "Well, I'm here aren't I? I'm becoming a Hero to help people, so I can only do what's right for them." Distance smiles enough to reach his eyes and nods, "Good answer, now let's see you put it into practice. Before sending you out into the field I want to see what you're capable of, what skills do you have to protect and do what's right? I want you to show me, Nagant!" Grinning ear to ear Kaina falls into a fighting stance and begins a spar with her new teacher.
(Present Day, UA Staff Room)
Kaina shakes herself from her memories and smiles, that had been so long ago. She was only fifteen when her work study with the now retired Pro, Distance, had begun, but now she was thirty-eight and a teacher at the school she had graduated from. Kaina sips from a cup of tea she had prepared for herself and looks over the last of her pre-semester, signing here and there where needed before filing the last page away.
With a relieved sighs Kaina finishes off her tea and stands to join the rest of the staff in watching the entrance exam. She would have been with them from the start, but she always managed to get more paperwork than the other teachers, some years even gave her more than Nezu himself. She supposed it made sense, quite a few of her lessons involved real firearms, but it was still a pain.
After a few minutes of walking she finally steps into the viewing room and settles near a wall. She sweeps the room and sees everyone not physically working the exams present, "So, what'd I miss?" A woman with messy purple locks dressed in a somewhat scandalous outfit gazes over, "Not too much, a few students have displayed exceptional combat prowess and several have earned rescue points, but nothing too interesting has gone down yet." A white bipedal stoat seated nearby lets out a cackle, "Of course not! We haven't given them their surprise yet!"
The creature leans forward and pushes a big red button, releasing more mad laughter as he does so. All attention goes to the screens as massive robots are released throughout all the testing areas to terrorize the students. With an expression of pure glee the stoat, who is actually Nezu UA's Principal, begins to monologue, "You may be able to fight petty thieves and simple back-alley dealers, but how will you fair against such insurmountable odds? It's time for the true test of character!" Kaina sighs and shakes her head, "It still baffles me how we still have the budget for those every year."
As the test begins to wind down, the viewing room is suddenly thrown into shock. On a single screen, in testing site Gamma, the Zero Point robot has been obliterated. That wasn't the shocking part, it had been done before, Kaina had even done it herself by shooting out it's central processors. What was surprising however, was the fact that it had been taken out in a single attack! Only one person was known to even be capable of such a feat at the student's age and that was All Might, who was in the room with them in his true form.
The viewing room devolved into chaos as the student's actions were discussed between the appointed judges. Meanwhile Kaina couldn't help but grin in excitement, 'This is going to be one hell of a year!' In the back of the room a bedraggled man with long black hair wearing dark clothes could only groan, 'This year is going to be hell, isn't it?'
A/N: I've been having ideas for something like this for a while, but when I saw it wasn't really a thing I jumped at the chance to write it. Distance is a made up name, but the character and his powers are from something else that I particularly enjoy reading. Ten points to anyone who guesses. Anyway, peace out.
