Chapter III
I couldn't help but feel somewhat excited when we started our trip to Westover Hall. These last few weeks with Percy hadn't exactly been untroubled but after annihilating what felt like the dozenth overconfident dracanea platoon with the occasional giant thrown in, it turned mostly annoying. From what I had been told about Grover's call for help there was a serious emergency, so presumably some monster and something serious at that.
It clearly wasn't something big and stupid, it had to be something that acted with care, so no Drakon or anything massive like that.
I sat together with Annabeth and Thalia in the back seat as I listened to Mom tell the story of Percy's childhood. I had heard a lot of them by now but I still somewhat enjoyed hearing them, it certainly was entertaining to watch Percy seemingly get redder by the minute. Though it also filled me with a sense of sadness and anger, as I realized that I had been robbed of any sense of a normal childhood, not that their was any sense in shedding tears over it, what was done, was done.
The sound of the snow and ice hitting the window rhythmically was calming in a way, helping me suppress the anxiety and excitement I felt. I felt my mind shift back to the task at hand, searching through my knowledge for possible candidates for what we are facing in there, but it was to no avail, we simply didn't know enough.
"Oh yeah, this'll be fun." Thalia muttered as she peered out into the blizzard and I shifted to look out as well.
The school we were heading to, Westover Hall, looked menacing, it looked like someone had decided to build the most stereotypical evil castle ever. Black stone walls were stretching high and round towers overlooked the frosty landscape surrounding us.
A large wooden gate was at the entrance and I wondered if they actually used it, that seemed impractical and I had a feeling this place already had a ginormous heating bill either way. In a way it reminded me of what I had heard about Othrys, though it seemed far less defensible, a cheap imitation of a fortress at best in comparison.
At the sight I had subconsciously started checking my armor, fiddling with the straps on the side of the cuirass, making sure everything was still in proper condition. Of course I knew everything should be alright, I had spent a good hour, polishing and checking it before we started, I did at least want to good look if I died. I pulled one of the leather laces on my left vambrace tighter as I heard mom ask.
"Are you sure you don't want me to wait?"
"No, thanks, Mom," Percy quickly replied. "I don't know how long it will take. We'll be okay."
"But how will you get back? I'm worried, Percy." She stated and I had to admit she raised a valid point, how were we getting back, though that was the smallest of our problems.
I'm sure we'll be fine," I said, trying to sound confident. "We're together aren't we? Don't worry, Mom."
"We'll keep him out of trouble, Ms. Jackson." Annabeth assured and my mother seemed to relax a bit.
"All right, dears," she said with a sigh. "Do you have everything you need?"
"Yes, Ms. Jackson," Thalia said. "Thanks for the ride."
"Extra sweaters? You have my cell phone number?"
"Mom—" Percy protested futilely.
"Your ambrosia and nectar, boys? And a golden drachma in case you need to contact camp?"
"We'll be fine, Mom. Though we probably should get going, while there's still light left." I stated and Percy quickly agreed and pushed outside, clearly desperate to leave the car. With a few quick words of thanks I followed him.
The cold winter air whipped into my face as we stood outside. I had always enjoyed the cold, or at least been unbothered by it, being used to the cold of ocean depths.
"Your mom is so cool." Thalia commented as she turned to us and I hummed in agreement.
"She's pretty okay, what about y-" Before Percy could finish his question to Thalia I quickly intervened, the last thing we needed was a fight between these two hardheads.
"Hey Ann, any idea what we'll be up against in there, I've been drawing blanks." I asked the daughter of Athena as I moved between the two.
"I can't say for sure, perhaps some sort of shapeshifter..." She said and while she didn't admit it outright, the fact that she didn't have anything concrete worried me further.
"Let's just get inside, Grover is surely waiting." She said with a shudder and I nodded following her as she walked ahead.
I was delighted as we entered Westover Hall. The school seemed to take the military part of military school beyond just discipline and uniforms. The hall we were in alone carried everything from suits of Gothic and Maximilian plate armor to Kentucky rifles and maxim guns, a true panoply of arms and armor. If we had the time I'd have loved to take a look around, whoever ran this place clearly didn't skimp on fitting decor.
After I stashed my helmet and backpack with the others' bags behind one of the dozen black stone pillars, I noticed the music coming from the end of the hall, it sounded like some run-of-the-mill contemporary pop. We exchanged a few looks and started on our way towards the source of the music.
We barely made it halfway across the room, when the sound of footsteps on stone echoed through the hall. A man and a woman paced in front of us, blocking our way. They wore what I presumed to be the school's uniforms. I didn't pay much attention to the woman, I was far too focused on the man for that. I had an eerie feeling about him and it was not just because of his different colored eyes boring into us. He seemed familiar and considering my past, familiar meant dangerous.
"Well?" the woman asked inquisitively. "What are you doing here?"
"Ma'am, we are just returning to the dance, we-" I attempted an explanation before the man interrupted me rudely.
"Ha! How are you returning when visitors are not allowed?" He sneered with a heavy accent. "You shall be ejected."
I was about to protest when Thalia stepped forward and snapped her fingers. Manipulating the mist, was she now? I had been of course taught how to do it, but was no fan of it, the mist could be unpredictable, even if you controlled it.
"Oh, but we're not visitors, sir," Thalia stated. "We go to school here. You remember? I'm Thalia. And this is Annabeth, Theo and Percy. We're in the eighth grade."
I raised my brow at the spontaneous name change, not that I blamed her, uncommon names raised questions. The man didn't quite seem to believe either of us by the way he skeptically narrowed his eyes, which just strengthened my sense of worry towards him. Alas he turned to the other teacher.
"Ms. Gottschalk, do you know these students?" He asked and I was short of ramming my elbow in Percy's side to stop him from snickering.
"I... yes. I believe I do, sir." She said, still confused from the mist with a glassy look in her eyes. "What are you doing away from the gymnasium? Get back to the dance right now!"
We all surely would have been relieved to obey her command and just hurry out of there when I hear a familiar voice call breathlessly.
"You made it! You-" The Satyr stopped as he noticed the teachers, looking between them. "Oh, Mrs. Gottschalk. Dr. Thorn! I, uh-"
When Thorn turned to him I seriously started to worry, he already was suspicious as it was.
"What is it, Mr. Underwood?" He snarled his voice filled with detest. "Yes, sir. Of course, Dr. Thorn. I just meant, I'm so glad they made... the punch for the dance! It is great, and they made it!"
Thorn absolutely did not believe a word coming out of his mouth. He would surely have thrown us out then and there if the woman hadn't spoken up again. After her short compliment on the punch we supposedly made, she sent us away with a warning. She didn't have to tell us twice as we quickly hurried away from them.
"Good work with the mist back there." I whispered to Thalia when we were out of earshot and she nodded.
"So that's what that finger-snapping thing was?" Percy asked as he fell in pace.
"Hasn't Chiron taught you how to?" Thalia asked and I sighed, I knew stuff like this was a sore topic for Percy ever since Thalia came back.
As expected Percy's face changed to that brooding look of his he carried, he clearly wasn't happy about this. The two really needed to get a hold of their little rivalry, before it killed someone.
We quickly arrived in front of the door leading to the gymnasium.
"That was close!" Grover said. "Thank the gods you got here!"
The others greeted him enthusiastically, they all knew him far better than I did, he had been the protector of all of them after all. I greeted him with a nod, I was at best familiar with the satyr having exchanged only a few sentences with him at best since I met him this summer. After they finished their reunion I spoke up.
"So what's the task at hand, what are we facing?" I asked impatiently.
"I found two."
"Two half-bloods?" Thalia said surprised. "Here?"
I had to admit I was surprised at well, though pleasantly so. Two demigods, especially if they weren't of some minor god, were good news. With the war coming up and more and more monsters rising we were being ground up little by little and any new bit of manpower was appreciated.
"A brother and a sister," Gorver elaborated. "They're ten and twelve. I don't know their parentage, but they're strong. We are running out of time though."
"Monsters?" Percy asked and Grover looked nervous.
"One. He suspects. I don't think he's positive yet, but this is the last day of the term. I'm sure he won't let them leave campus without finding out. It may be our last chance!"
"It's Thorn isn't it?" I asked and Grover nodded. "I feel like I met him before."
The others looked worried and Percy spoke up. "But that would mean he is working for Luke."
"Presumably so, not that this really helps us much, I wish I knew more." I admitted.
"Anyways," Thalia said. "These half-bloods are at the dance?"
Grover nodded again.
"Then let's dance," Thalia said decisively.
The gym was filled with the blaring voices of children, music stemming from boxes placed few and far between. It was unpleasantly warm. the ground was covered with red and black balloons, and students were rushing around.
Gaggles of Girls surged through the room like swarms of locusts, encircling the occasional lone boy while cackling madly, before moving on leaving a severely humiliated boy behind. A good part of the students were actually dancing, though quite a few were just standing around uncomfortably. Still overall it was pandemonium I was looking at.
"There they are," Grover said with a nod, looking at two of the younger kids keeping away from the dance. "Bianca and Nico di Angelo."
Bianca, seemed to be older of the two, not just from looks, but also by the way she was scolding her brother. The boy who shared her black silky hair and dark eyes, was without doubt her brother. He didn't really seem to listen to his sister's scolding, instead more focused on the deck of cards in his hands. Bianca looked stressed and nervous, one might call her paranoid, but she was quite rightly worried, did she feel that something was off?
"Do they. . . I mean, have you told them?" Annabeth asked.
"You know how it is. That could put them in more danger." The satyr said with a sigh. "Once they realize who they are, their scent becomes stronger."
Percy nodded in understanding, though I had to admit I never really had much problem with monsters before this summer, even when I was less supervised than usual, though it had started becoming a lot worse. Perhaps the Titans had somehow warded me from drawing too much attention and that protection was gone now, there were so many questions about my past that I still couldn't answer.
"So let's grab them and get out of here," Percy proposed and I had to agree with him, we were wasting time talking.
Before he could even take a step forward though Thalia stopped him, pulling him back. Thorn slipped into the room from a backdoor, he definitely knew who we were from the way he nodded towards us. At least he was polite enough to let us know he planned on murdering us.
"Look away from the kids," Thalia commanded. "We have to wait for a chance to get them, for now just pretend we aren't here for them. We have to throw him off the scent."
I bit my lip, I had my doubts about this. Thorn without doubt suspected what we were doing here, what else would we be here for?
"How?" Percy asked.
"We're four powerful half-bloods. Our presence should confuse him. Mingle. Act natural. Do some dancing. But keep an eye on those kids."
"Dancing? Annabeth asked and Thalia nodded as she focused on the music.
"Ugh. Who chose Jesse McCartney?" She said with distaste, though I had no clue who that was supposed to be.
"I did." Grover stated looking hurt.
"Oh my gods, Grover. That is so lame. Can't you play, like, Green Day or something?" Thalia continued, though I still was wholly oblivious to what she was talking about. You might call me culturally ignorant, but I didn't exactly get much contact with modern culture for most of my life.
"Green who?" He asked just as confused.
"Never mind. Let's dance.
"But I can't dance!" He looked desperate and I couldn't help but smile. "Besides there's five of us and someone should watch the exit, right? I'll just go." Without leaving time for anyone to stop him he scurried of.
"Coward..." I muttered and the daughter of Zeus turned to me, electric blue eyes glinting.
"Are you sure about this Thalia, I mean he surely knows why we are here right?" I asked trying to find some excuse.
"Sure I am, King Krill." She said as I she grabbed my arm and dragged me out as I frowned, that certainly was a new name.
"You know, Sparky, I'd be careful with the nicknames." I said with a grin, as I watched her furrow her brows.
The two of us quickly fell into a slowdance and I couldn't help but blush a bit. I was a lot closer to Thalia than I necessarily wanted to, sure she was my cousin, not that it matter much with immortals, but she was also undeniably positively stunning.
"You can actually dance," Thalia acknowledged "I'm surprised."
"I could tell you the same, didn't expect you to have time to learn dancing while on the run." I replied and continued.
"So how are things at your school, I assume you haven't been exactly unbothered?" Thalia was about one and a half years older than me, quite a tad more powerful and the child of the prophecy, she must be drawing a lot of attention.
"I don't know where even to begin, it feels like we can't spend a week without something trying to kill us." She explained and I nodded in understanding.
"Ha, tell me about, these last weeks had been relatively calm. Though there was this snail-like water monster in the sewers near the school, that was really weird and honestly disgusting." I said as I thought back to the strange encounter and Thalia raised an eyebrow in amusement.
"Oh, I can't wait to hear the heroic tales of fighting snails in sewer grime." She said with a grin, before asking. "How are you adjusting to mortal life?"
I thought about the question for a moment before answering. "Pretty good actually, I've been to school before for some time, but really only as part of training. Things at school are fine, school work is no trouble, but I just don't feel like it's my kind of life, I feel out of place. I doubt I'll ever be returning if I have my choice."
Thalia hummed in agreement. "I feel you, it's just so weird, I've known nothing but running away and fighting these last years before that day on half-blood hill..."
None of us said anything as we just danced in silence for a few minutes, before I spoke up again.
"Want to get some of that great punch we made? I am intrigued if it truly is as good as promised." I asked and Thalia punched me lightly in the arm.
"You know full well Thorn is standing ther-" She said but stopped and I turned to look there as well.
"He's gone." I stated before adding. "The Di Angelos as well."
"We have to get Annabeth and the others and go after them." Thalia said and as if summoned by her words said daughter of Athena burst out of the crowd breathlessly.
"Finally, there you are, the Di Angelos, they are gone." She said frantically.
"We noticed, where's Percy?" I asked her and she looked around.
"Don't know, I must have lost him."
"We've got no time, let's get Grover and go after them." Thalia said and started out to leave the hall, I nodded and followed her.
After grabbing Grover at the exit we went out into the hall where we had entered. I instantly saw the spike impaled in the wall and the small trail on blood from where it was impaled there had been a fight, that was much was obvious. I doubted one of the siblings had defended themselves, so Percy had probably been here. My eyes fell on the gate, still slightly open.
"There, they went outside." Annabeth pointed out in the same moment and we rushed towards it. I quickly picked my helmet up from our stack of things, carrying it under my arm and we stepped out of the building.
We stood in the snow, the blizzard raging on around us. There was no trace of them anywhere near us.
"Great, what now." Thalia muttered.
"Wait," Grover said. "I can feel Percy calling me."
"Your empathy link?" Annabeth asked and I was surprised, I wasn't even aware Percy had one.
"Yeah." Grover said distracted his eyes closed. "He's in that direction." He said, pointing in the direction of the forest.
So we started running through the snow, after a few minutes we had entered the forest. Shortly after we were able to hear voices, though I could not understand what they were saying. It meant we were on the right path.
We moved on further and now could see the edge of the woods, Thalia raised her hand stopping us. I looked on, Thorn stood near the edge of the cliff, I could feel the sea deep below it. He towered over Percy and the Di Angelos and something moved behind his back.
"So? What's the plan?" Grover asked and looked to Thalia.
"I'll charge him, Theseus follow me up, Grover support us." She stated and I nodded, slipping on my helmet and letting the sword of Theseus appear in my hand.
"I'll get Percy and the kids, wait on it." Annabeth said as she slipped on her blue Yankees cap and disappeared.
For a few seconds we waited anxiously in silence, the wind whistling through the empty treetops around us. Then suddenly Percy and the Di Angelos crashed into the snow. We bounded forward, in the corner of my eye I saw Thalia's spear gleaming as she stormed forward, her shield, a copy of the fearsome Aegis in front of her.
Thorn recoiled at it's sight as Thalia jabbed forward, it could have been over right then and there, but his hand shifted into a massive orange paw and simply pushed the spear aside and sent Thalia back with claws clashing on her shield, sparks flying.
I used the opportunity she provided, moving in on the distracted Thorn. I swung my sword in a wide side-wards arc, a powerful two-handed strike that should have easily sliced him open. But Thorn was fast, faster than I anticipated. I now could clearly see what had been moving behind him, a dark scorpion tail came up to block me in the last moment. The shear force of my strike still managed to shear off part of the end, it fell to the ground, a strange liquid dripping from it, searing in the snow.
I jumped back as he snarled furiously the tail whipping back around, grazing of my chest-plate as it tore through my coat and hoodie. I swallowed, one strike like that hitting properly and I'd have a few broken ribs at least, if not worse even.
As I got out of range Thorn followed up with sending a volleys of spikes flying towards me and Thalia. I quickly thrust my hands forward, a powerful gale from the sea turning to shield me, scattering the spikes wildly around me, hitting trees and snow. To my right I heard the sound of something thumping on metal repeatedly, seemingly the rest of the spikes hitting Aegis.
I didn't dare glance over to Thalia, keeping my eyes trained on the monster ahead of me. I heard the sound of reed pipes playing behind me and within seconds thick strands of grass broke through the snow below Thorn, entwining his legs. Thorn seemed little more than annoyed though, as a matter of fact he seemed entirely unbothered as he grew, his body now covered in orange fur. I cursed myself for not recognizing him before.
"Manticore!" I shouted.
I went in again, intending to use this opportunity and keep on the pressure on him.
I Rushed forward as Thorn tore the ropes of grass to shreds, snarling angrily as his damaged tail whipped around, sending volleys of deadly projectiles flying, though they were badly aimed. I slid forward trough the snow, feeling a spike glance off the top of my helmet as I got back up, continuing my attack. I surged forward, thrusting my sword, aiming to pierce his abdomen.
His claws swept through the air and I was forced to dodge downwards, before rolling to the side as he struck downward. Cursing I retreated again, pulling back towards Percy and the demigods.
Thorn clearly didn't feel like he was finished with me as it seemed, sending another volley in our direction. I managed to bat one away, but he followed with another volley. I jumped back, landing next to Percy who, thank the gods, had his watch shield open by now, the powerful spikes dented the metal as they battered against it.
I heard Thalia with a valiant battle cry charge the manticore again. I felt hopeful as she struck for his head, that is till the helicopter appeared, the whirring of it's rotor blades now thumping loudly. A searchlight pierced trough the foggy night, blinding Thalia, allowing Thorn to slam her back without challenge, Percy charged towards her past me instantly.
I glanced around desperately as Thorn laughed maniacally, mocking us, the tide of battle was turning against us more and more. I needed a solution, here and now. I considered trying collapsing the cliff, but that was dangerous for all of us, far more dangerous than I like. My eyes landed on the di Angelos, Bianca looked terrified and overwhelmed, not that I blamed her in the situation. Her brother looked... amazed? Not exactly what I expected.
Thorn wanted them, perhaps if we got them away into the woods he'd follow us. There he wouldn't have the helicopter to help him and his size would be less advantageous. Retreating into favorable terrain was a tried and tested strategy and in my eyes our best hope at success and hopefully survival, right now.
"Bianca, right?" I called to the girl, who turned to me. "Please, take your brother and-"
I didn't get to finish my sentence as the clear, distinct sound of a hunting horn cut through the air. My mind raced as the battlefield turned still, who was that? The hunters of Artemis? What would they be doing here? Thorn seemed just as shocked as he called out in denial. Any doubt was shattered when a flash of silver broke through the night, a arrow burrowing itself in Thorn's shoulder, causing him to cry out in pain.
"Curse you!" He wailed out as he shot dozens of spikes blindly into the woods. But it was to no avail as for every spike a silver arrow flew forth, cutting in clean in half. Honestly it seemed like unnecessary showmanship, when they could just have taken cover behind the trees, not that I wasn't going to complain. As the hunters moved out of the trees, I heard Annabeth call out what I had just concluded.
"The hunters!" She called as more and more girls clad in silvery appeared, advancing towards the manticore, ahead of them Zoë Nightshade, their lieutenant.
My teachers had considered it crucial, to know thy enemy and know thyself as Sun Tzu would say, and as such I knew near everything important there was to know about the lieutenant of the hunt and daughter of Atlas.
The beautiful girl, who looked about fourteen, was far older than that, she was incredibly old, ancient, even for a hunter of Artemis and carried herself with the typical grace most immortals, partial or not, did. Even without her silver tiara, marking her rank, she would have easily stood out among her companions.
She walked forward with cold disgust in her eyes as she stared down the manticore, arrow knocked.
"Permission to kill my lady?" She called back and I narrowed my eyes, Artemis was among her hunters currently, I didn't know what to make of that, meeting immortals was near always a dangerous affair.
Thorn had no intention of dying with dignity it seems as he wailed. "This is not fair! Direct interference! It is against the Ancient Laws."
Another girl stepped forward. Even though she looked just about twelve years old, it was clear who this was. Power rolled off her like waves and together with her inhuman beauty it was clear we were looking at a goddess and her eerie, cold yellow-silver eyes made it quite clear which one, the goddess of the hunt herself.
"The hunting of all wild beasts is within my sphere." She stated condescendingly. "And you, foul creature, are a wild beast."
She looked at Zoë with a nod. "Zoë, permission granted."
"If I cannot have these alive, I shall have them dead!" Thorn growled and I braced myself, thinking he would go for the Di Angelos behind me.
But he didn't, instead he lunged towards Percy and Thalia who were both in no condition to defend themselves. Before I or anyone else could react Annabeth had already launched herself forward to intercept him.
"Get back, half-blood!" Zoë called. "Get out of the line of fire!"
But Annabeth didn't hesitate as she leaped towards Thorn, burying her knife in the charging monster's side. Thorn started spinning madly as he howled in pain, trying to shake off the demigoddess.
"Fire!" Zoë's voice rang, the order clearly sounding, a dozen silver arrows flew, one pierced Thorn's leg, another buried itself in his neck, one more in his stomach. The heavily wounded manticore stumbled backwards, wailing in pain.
"This is not the end, Huntress! You shall pay!" He called out and with horror I realized what he was doing as he turned to leap off the cliff.
I turned around and with a yell thrust out my hand, feeling a tug in my gut. In the corner of my eye I saw Thorn leap off, Annabeth still hanging on. The water rose up like tentacles reaching towards the falling manticore, I wasn't going to let him escape, not like this. And I might just have succeeded, but shortly after Thorn leapt off he disappeared, dissolving into nothingness and Annabeth with him. I watched perplexed, where had they gone? Behind me I heard Percy call out Annabeth's name.
I broke out of my state of irritation when I heard the rattling of the helicopters board armaments and felt the water crash back down.
Luckily they weren't aiming for me, otherwise I surely would have been riddled with holes by the time I got back to focus. The hunters had scattered, only Artemis herself remaining steadfast, not that she had any reason to fear the bullets, I presumed they would simply bounce off her if they hit, nothing more than a nusiance for her.
She raise her arm towards it. "Mortals," she declared with distaste, "are not allowed to witness my hunt."
The helicopter and it's occupants disappeared, replaced with a flock of ravens. I had to admit I was surprised at this, if I remembered correctly ravens were sacred to her brother Apollo, not her. I watched them disappear into the night sky, before turning around. The hunters were moving towards us and Zoë glared at Thalia with almost as much distaste as she had towards the manticore, these two clearly had some past issues, from the looks of it.
The lieutenant looked up from the daughter of Zeus and scanned the rest of us.
"Five half-bloods and a satyr." She reported, turning to her patron.
"Yes," Artemis confirmed and I bowed lightly as she looked at me for a moment. "Some of Chiron's campers I see."
"Annabeth!" I winced as I heard Percy's distraught cry.
"You have to let us save her!" He cried.
"Percy," I said with care. "Annabeth is gone, I saw her disappear myself."
Percy didn't even seem to listen as he was pushed down by a couple of the hunters and the goddess turned to him.
"Your brother is correct Percy Jackson, I'm sorry, but your friend is beyond help."
Again Percy tried getting up, struggling against the hunters pushing him down.
"Let me go!" He demanded furiously. "Who do you think you are?"
"Percy." I said in a warning tone as Zoë stepped forward, hand raised.
I wouldn't have been surprised if she had struck him, all the more was I surprised when Artemis stopped her, with a raise of her hand.
"No, I sense no disrespect Zoë. he is simply distraught. He does not understand." A glint shone in her cold silver eyes. "I am Artemis, goddess of the hunt."
I sighed as my brother sat there shocked, Percy wasn't stupid, I knew that, but sometimes he was slower than I expected, though I guess I should cut him some slack right now. Percy cared a lot more about Annabeth than I did, sure she was my friend but I've only known her since this summer. But Percy had risked his life with her many times and if I was correct in my assumptions from the way he talked about her, he had a serious crush on her.
I wasn't surprised that what had just happened hit him harder than me.
Grover threw himself down on his knees in the snow, yammering and stammering with awe as he looked at the goddess. I raised my brow, a satyr should have been able to recognize such an important nature goddess beforehand, right? Thalia snapped angrily at Grover, ordering him to get back up as he still knelt, filled with amazement.
"Whoa. Hold up, Time out." Bianca said and we all turned to her.
Her dark eyes flickered between us as she pointed her finger at each of us in order, clearly still overwhelmed, though much less joyous than her brother about it.
"Who... Who are you people?"
