"Athair."

"Yes, M'iníon?"

"What has happened in Terebinthia since I've been gone? This book doesn't tell me anything."

"I know your memory of this world is coming back at a fast pace, but I don't know what all you remember."

"I remember Mamaí."

"Then surely you remember your brother?"

The one piece that Kayla could not remember, but she just then did.

"Conláed? That was his name, wasn't it?"

"Yes. He is not my son by blood, but I treated him like he was. His father is Vortigern, the unlawful king of Camelot."

"I knew we had different fathers; I just never knew who his father was."

"Vortigern violated Úna. He never admitted to the existence of Conláed. All Conláed wanted the acceptance of his father. He knew who his father was. But if Vortigern acknowledged his existence, then he would have to admit he violated Úna, and if he did that, he would be put on trial in the Terebinthian court. Conláed doesn't know if he wants to try his father or not. I was the father to him he wished he had. But he never once called me Athair, even though I said he could. Do you remember how your Mamaí died?"

"She was poisoned, wasn't she?"

"Yes. The nectar from a Belladonna Nightshade root was in her glass of water that day. It was also in your glass."

"My glass?!"

"Yes. She could see the odd colouring of the water in your glass, so she took what was in your glass, and poured it into hers. She called for a fresh glass of water for you. I knew why she poured it into her glass, and I held her hand as she choked down the glass, knowing what would happen."

"Who poisoned her?"

"Jadis. But the poison that was in your glass was put there by your brother. When she passed, I sent you to the other world to keep you alive. Everyone in this world had to believe that you were dead. Jadis also murdered all four of my children from my first marriage to the Narnia princess Abhistín. And my son-in-law, your uncle Eadbhárd. I was not going to let her murder my grandchildren as well. So, they were sent to the other world as well. When you were sent away, Jadis cast a spell on your brother that managed to prolong his life by 775 years. I don't know how much longer this spell will last, but you will take back Terebinthia."

"Will the spell end when Jadis ends?"

"No. Unfortunately, it will not."

"What about Ivar?"

"Send him to me, so I can tell him his story."

"I will."

Kayla went off in search of Ivar and found him axe sparring with a faun.

"Nice blow there, my lord."

"Please, just call me Ivar."

"Ivar! Athair is asking for you."

"What for?"

"Just go to him. And don't make him wait. He is a lion."

"I won't."

"You had better not."

Ivar was a bit worried as to what Aslan would need to talk to him about.

"I'm here, Aslan."

"Come and sit next to me. I won't bite."

"What is it that you need to talk to me about."

"What do you remember about your past here?"

"Hardly anything."

"Has the axe helped you remember?"

"Bits and pieces."

"Well, you were very young when you were sent to the other world. I don't even think you were a year old yet."

"Why was I sent away?"

"The giants in the north have a thing for eating. They like to eat humans. The giants are the reason there are no humans left in the north. But Jadis the White witch had a vendetta against your parents."

"What was it?"

"The first reason, your father would not let her reside in his kingdom, and secondly, he would not surrender his kingdom to her. So, she promised to send all the humans of the north into the mouths of the giants, and she did just that. Except for one. You."

"So, what will happen with me and my future here?"

"Your future here is with the others. As I said, you represent what once was, but you still have importance. And I've noticed what goes on between you and Caoilfhionn."

"I guess you know us better than we know ourselves, sir. I don't know what exactly is going on between Kayla and I."

"It will all be figured out sooner or later."

Kayla had decided to join Peter and Edmund in sparring practice on horses. She had chosen a solid black mare, the prettiest of the bunch.

"Come on, Ed! Sword hand up! Like Oreius showed us!"

"Kayla, you'll have less of a struggle on the battlefield than us."

"The flames of her sword had better not burn a hair on me!"

"She can talk! My horse can talk!"

"I have a name!"

"What is it?"

"Erdudvyl."

"Erdudvyl. I'll remember that."

"And I know your name, your majesty."

"Easy on the majesty. I haven't been crowned."

"Where's Ivar?"

"He's talking with Athair."

"About his history?"

"Most likely. You'll get your chance on that subject, Pevensies. Don't worry."

"Oh, we don't doubt that we will."

"I have a brother."

"What?!"

"I have a blood brother."

"Who?"

"The man who is destroying Terebinthia. His name is Conláed. He is my half-brother. Athair is not his father."

Of course, she never mentioned it before. No one had any memory of Narnia until they got there, and at the point, everything was coming back slowly. Mr. Beaver came running up to tell them some news, and it startled Edmund's horse a bit.

"Woah, horsey!"

"My name is Philip."

"Oh, sorry."

"You all had better come quick! The White Witch has requested a meeting with Aslan!"

"Oh, hell no!"

Back in the camp, a faun lead Ginnarbrik to Aslan.

"What is your message, son of earth?"

"The queen of Narnia, and empress of the Lone Islands, desires safe conduct to come and speak with you."

"Queen of Narnia, indeed! Why of all the cheap-!"

"Peace, Beaver. Tell your mistress that grant her safe conduct on one condition. That she leaver wand behind at that rock."

"She expected such a request. And agrees."

"My people will go with you to see that the condition is properly observed."

Two fauns head off with Ginnarbrik to bring the witch to the camp.

"What if she turns them into stone?!

"I think they're thinking the very same thing. It's sure to be alright. Would you send them if it weren't?"

The witch arrived, and the two fauns were still alive. She holds her wand up so everyone can see her lay it on the rock, then walks into the camp.

"Aslan. You, have a traitor there!"

She points to Edmund, and the family and the Beavers surround him to protect him.

"His offence was not against you."

"Have you forgotten the deep magic?"

"Deep magic from the dawn of time."

"You know what is written there, on that very table of stone! You know the magic that was put into Narnia at the very beginning! You know that every traitor belongs to me, as my lawful prey, and that for every treachery I have the right to kill! You know Aslan that human creature is mine! His life is my property! His blood is forfeit to me!"

"Come and take it then!"

"Fools! Do you think your master can rob me of my rights?! He knows the deep magic better than that! He knows that unless I have blood, as the law states, the whole of Narnia will be overturned and will perish in fire and water!"

"It is true. I do not deny it."

"Oh, Aslan! Can't you do something?!"

Edmund looked at Aslan with a sign of help and fear in his eyes. He did not want to die at the hands of the witch.

"Work against the deep magic. Wait here all of you. I will talk with the witch alone."

Aslan and the witch head out of the camp to talk. Lucy leans into Susan and cries, while Mr. Beaver lays a protective hand on Edmund.

"Mind if I say a quick prayer?"

"Anything, Kayla."

"Father God, we don't know if you can hear us in this world, but please, do not let this witch kill Edmund. Just like you did for us on the cross, if it takes us to sacrifice ourselves so that he can live, then so be it. Amen. I've always said a prayer a day keeps the devil away. And that witch is a spawn of the devil himself no doubt."

Everyone in the camp worries in fear of what will happen to Aslan. He comes walking back into the camp, startling everyone.

"I have settled the matter. She has renounced her claim on the Son of Adam's blood."

"But how do I know this promise will be kept?!"

Aslan lets out a roar that send Jadis and Ginnarbrik running out of the camp.

"See? God hears us here, too."

"We must move from this place at once. It will soon be needed for other things. Tonight, we will camp in the forest."

Everyone gathers up everything and moves into the camp. Aslan looks at Kayla with a certain look in his eyes, and she nodded at him. She knew what he was going to do for Edmund, because her mother had done the same thing for her.
