Fourteen years later, Prince Rabadash of Calormen arrived at Cair Paravel, seeking courtship with the fair Queen Susan.
"Prince Rabadash. Welcome to Cair Paravel."
"Thank you, your most gracious Majesties. Where is the Gentle Queen Susan?"
"She is at the archery range with Lady Kayla. They will meet us in the banquet hall."
"Very well then."
At the archery range, Susan's aim was off. Not her usual style. And even though Susan's arrows hardly ever miss, Kayla was the best weapon master in the country.
"Are you nervous about meeting the prince?"
"Not really. I'm just hoping that this union will strengthen the ties between Narnia and Calormen."
"Narnia and Calormen never had any ties to begin with, Susan."
"Precisely my point."
"Never thought I would see the day when a ruling woman of Narnia would marry for an alliance instead of marrying for love. That's just not like you. What makes it worse is that YOU, Susan, are the logical one amongst us, and your conscience should be telling you not to do this. Not even your brothers and sisters want you to do this."
"So says the woman who overlooks the man she is in love with when she sees him EVERYDAY. The whole country knows what goes on between you and Ivar. And you're older than I am! You should be courting before me."
"Alright, first of all, I don't overlook Ivar, I just want to take back Terebinthia first. Second of all, I'm only five months older than you. Third of all, if this world is going to use marriage for alliances instead of what God made it for, then I say I should be the one doing this. This man is from Calormen. From Calormen! You know how the men in that county are! And it's a country that has slaves!"
"I see all of your points, Kayla. Perhaps it's time we go in and change for the banquet."
"Agreed. Even though you're the one being courted, I still love to be the bell of the ball. I can handle any suitor the world throws at me."
"Except Ivar."
"He's not even a suitor!"
Kayla and Susan headed up to their rooms to change into dresses that were more suitable for banquets. Susan liked to be simple, but Kayla always liked to be the belle of the ball, especially on the battlefield.
Susan chose a gold off the shoulder dress with an attached cap, while you could say Kayla's dress was almost provocative. Kayla chose a red dress with glitter and feathers. It was sleeveless, but it had a along train coming from each of the shoulder straps. There was a portion of the dress that showed the area of her legs between mid-thigh and her knees. The dress did not surprise Susan at all. This was Kayla's way of telling Rabadash, if you want to marry into this family, this is what you have to deal with.
"Announcing Her Majesty, Queen Susan the Gentle, Queen of the Horn."
As it had been told by all the accounts he heard, Queen Susan was beautiful, Tall, with long black silky hair that fell down to her feet.
"Announcing Her Highness, Princess Kayla, Lady Protector of Narnia, Baroness of Dancing Lawn, Guardian of the Dancing Trees."
Kayla pushed the banquet hall doors open, and all eyes were on her. But the rulers of Narnia were used to it.
"Kayla, why are we not surprised?"
"I thought you all learned to not be surprised by me long ago?"
"We can never fully learn that lesson. No one can ever learn it."
Kayla had not grown in height since she was ten, so she stood five feet tall. Her hair was as long as Susan's but still had its blonde colour.
"My dearest Queen Susan. We finally meet."
"The pleasure is all mine, Prince Rabadash. I can only hope that this gives a good relationship between our two countries."
"That is my hope as well."
Three of the most cunning minds in the kingdom were in that banquet hall. Those minds belonged to Edmund, Ivar, and Kayla. They did not like the way Rabadash placed a kiss on their sister's hand. They could see into Rabadash's eyes, but only Kayla could read his mind. And his mind, he was calling Susan a barbarian queen.
"Edmund. Ivar. He thinks of us as barbarians. Though what he calls savages are more sophisticated than he is. And I am the most barbaric one in this country. In this whole world, perhaps."
Rabadash looked over to where Kayla, Ivar, and Edmund were sitting. He could hear their conversation, but Kayla shot him a death glare, and he could see flames in her eyes, and the Silmaril Sword within her reach. He was not going to make an argument with her, he wanted to stay alive.
"Princess Kayla-."
"I prefer to be called Lady. Or Dame. You can't call me Queen yet, but please don't call me Princess. That title suited me when I was a child. As you can see, I am not a child anymore. Because if you call me Princess, I will not hesitate to belt you across the lips."
"What is your full title if I may ask?"
"Even though I haven't been crowned, Athair and myself are truthfully the only ones who can call me Queen. But my full title is Dame Caoilfhionn, Queen of Terebinthia and Empress of the Lasair, Lady Protector of Narnia, Baroness of Dancing Lawn, Guardian of the Dancing Trees, Admiral of the Royal Navy, and General of the Costal Forces."
"You? An admiral? Ha! I'd like to see that!"
"Perhaps you already have! I am the one that designed the Narnian warships, a design that has never been used in this world before. A design that was only used by the people of the country I grew up in, in the other world! I'd like to see you not be afraid to get your hands dirty. We are certainly not! I take pleasure in it!"
Ivar, Edmund, and Lucy were certainly enjoying the battle of wits between Kayla and Rabadash, but Susan and Peter were getting rather annoyed and scared.
"Kayla, please calm down."
"Well, tell this so called prince to start respecting our rules when he is in our country. That includes acknowledging the existence of women. I didn't come to the banquet to start a fight."
"You usually do."
"Only when I'm provoked. I am not one who knows how to control their anger. But it's my anger that has defeated countless regiments."
"Lady Kayla! Lady Kayla! Would you be so kind as to grace us with a fire show?"
"I don't think that is a good idea, Kayla. Your rage and firepower usually end up in a mess of ashes."
"And ashes make good nutrients for gardens. I think a fire show is a great idea, Mr. Tumnus. This banquet is starting to get a tad bit boring. Blow out the candles, lanterns, and torches and I'll get the party started."
Kayla headed for the main balcony of the banquet hall while everyone blew out the candles, lanterns, and torches. She rubbed her fingers on the palm of her hand, and a small ball of flame appeared on the tips of her fingers. She tossed it into her other hand, making it grow bigger. She wanted to make sure her fire show struck fear into the heart, mind and soul of Prince Rabadash. She then flattened the ball in between her hands, creating a disc. She spun the disc around in a vertical direction, making it grow larger than herself. She then pulled the disc apart, with a flame on each finger. She finally projected the flames onto each candle, lantern, and torch, giving the room light again.
"That is certainly something that you will always surprise us with."
"It would be better if I had one or two more people to do it with."
If Rabadash wanted to called Narnians barbarians, then Kayla would show him exactly what a barbarian is.
