"Welcome, only one?" A waitress greeted me.
"Yes, only me today." I nodded back to her with a smile that caused the waitress to blush a little.
I was led to a booth and I ordered some food that sounded alright. None of the choices were very healthy, but considering the area was mostly a small pass through town it was healthy enough.
After I finished my food I stood up to go pay for my food only to have two men in uniform stop me.
"You don't look like you are old enough to be out of school, so you skipping?" The shorter dark haired one said with a grin.
"Looks like it." The other one said before I could answer. He was a little taller than his partner and had greasy blond hair.
"Look, I have already graduated from high school and am an adult." I started before I was interrupted and hand cuffed by the shorter one.
"Sure thing pal, come along peacefully and we'll get you back to school before third period ends."
"Can I at least pay for my food before we leave?" I asked with an exasperated sigh. Maybe I would need to show myself around town more so that people recognized me. I did spend over three months working on my house without going out for anything other than picking up delivery orders and to lead the construction workers to my house. The delivery guy who would drop by with food I had ordered from the pizza place would recognize me, but that would be about it.
"Hey Rob, go pay for the kids meal and lets go." The shorter one said to his partner.
"Fine, but you'll owe me drinks later Steve." Rob said with a stink eye pointed at his partner.
As Steve led me outside he whistled at the sight of my car. "I wonder whose car that is, it sure is a beauty?"
"That would be mine." I sighed again.
"Sure thing kid, like you could afford something that pricey at your age."
I really should show my face around town more, maybe go to the police station and greet people there. I thought to myself in exasperation.
I was then put in the back of a squad car and Rob soon joined us before we drove off.
Steve and Rob drove me to the school and led me into the office before sitting me down. The red headed receptionist just greeted them before having them fill out the paperwork.
I was unhandcuffed by Steve who patted me on the shoulder with a smile and said. "Kid, you shouldn't skip school or it could ruin your future."
"I would agree with you, but I really wasn't skipping, I was telling you the truth." I told him in a deadpan tone.
"You're a funny one kid." Rob laughed before they both left.
I looked at the red headed receptionist who just smiled at me and said. "It's lunch time right now so you can go join the other students in the cafeteria."
I just let out a sigh before trudging over to the cafeteria. I can just view this as one of those necessary interactions I have whenever I go somewhere people don't recognize me.
