Chapter 1
Alice held out a cake in front of Bella with eighteen flickering candles placed perfectly symmetrical on the top tier.
"Make a wish!"
The celebration hadn't been too bad, and Bella had loved and appreciated each gift she was given—her favorite was easily the CD she got from Edward filled with his compositions—but it didn't change the underlying tension between her and Edward. She could feel it in how he had his arm around her waist and the small, affectionate kisses he placed on her temple or forehead.
He was also just playing nice, but he was simmering underneath; angry with her for stating the facts.
She sighed and closed her eyes to do as she was demanded to. "I wish Edward understood me better." She took a deep breath and blew out the candles in one go.
For a moment as the candles were extinguished, Bella felt a surge shoot through her body and she swayed on the spot, quickly losing her balance. A hand grabbed her to keep her upright, but to her surprise, it wasn't Edward, but Jasper.
Edward was frozen, looking as dazed as she felt. Everyone in the family gave him strange looks, all of them wondering what had happened and why he hadn't caught Bella before she fainted.
"Are you alright?" Jasper asked her quietly.
She nodded. "Yeah. Thank you for catching me." She locked eyes with Edward and both of them instantly knew they'd experienced similar sensations.
