Chapter 2

"I'm going to take Bella home," Edward said as the night grew late. He still felt a restless sensation in his body, completely unfamiliar to him, and it had taken a hold of him the instant Bella blew out the candles on her cake.

His hand was continuously clenching and unclenching in his pocket, but it did nothing to relieve the feeling.

The drive back to the Swan house was quiet. Both Bella and Edward's minds were preoccupied and neither felt the need to speak. He hadn't forgotten what she'd said earlier in the evening about them having the conversation he dreaded, and he couldn't deny that she was right.

It was necessary for them to talk, but he wished with his entire being that they didn't have to. He thought he'd been quite forthcoming about his reasons for not changing her, and he preferred to not hash out details with Bella, who's imagination was notorious for running wild.

He killed the engine, and Bella blinked in confusion as if she hadn't realized they'd already arrived.

"Will you stay tonight?" she asked, her tone hopeful and it caused him to smile. He loved that she always wanted him close-by, but he could also see the day's events had drained her. Her subsequent yawn proved his theory immediately.

"I need to discuss something with Carlisle, but I'll be back. You might have already fallen asleep, though," he said, and it appeared to appease her.

"I'll still know you're there. I always sleep better then." She leaned forward for a kiss and her delicate scent enveloped him, causing his throat to burn, but he'd take that every day over never being near her again. He was too much of a masochist to make such a sacrifice.

"Sleep tight, my Bella," he said when they pulled apart, his breath ghosting over her lips. "And happy birthday."
