Chapter 3

"Carlisle, I need to talk to you," Edward said before he'd reached the house and the older vampire affirmed the request with a thought and immediately headed to his study.

"I'm surprised you're not staying with Bella tonight," he said the second his first son appeared before him. "Is something wrong?"

"I'm going back there later, but I can't put this conversation off any longer. Bella's not budging this time." Edward looked up at the wall of paintings telling Carlisle's story and reminisced when he told it to Bella. How she'd marveled at it and how excited and simultaneously guilty he'd felt to share that part of himself with her.

"She's given you an ultimatum?" Carlisle asked. He'd had a feeling the day would come when Bella—headstrong and stubborn as she was—wouldn't accept Edward's avoidance on the subject of changing her for much longer.

Edward's hand twitched, still tingling with restlessness. Carlisle noticed the movement and stared at his hand in wonderment.

"More or less. How can I possibly explain to her the complexity of my reasons to not change her? How can I make her understand that it's not as easy as she wants to believe it to be?"

Carlisle's eyes were still zeroed in on Edward's hand as he answered. "Bella's young, not stupid. I believe she understands better than you give her credit for."

"I never insinuated her to be stupid," Edward replied with a grimace. "But how can she grasp the concept of eternity? Of truly never growing up or being perpetually frozen in a teenage body until the day you cease to exist?"

"Well, have you actually spoken to her about this?"

"I've tried, but she claims it's worth it. That I'm worth it." Edward turned to face his mentor. "My belief about damnation aside, I want her for forever, but I can't be selfish when her life is on the line."
