Elsa felt anxious for some reason and wanted to reach Winterfell as soon as possible. They were a small party, but it was enough to gain the enemy's attention, which was why they had been travelling through deserted paths. She'd asked her dragons to stay high enough in the sky, so they could easily pass off as ravens or any bird for the matter. She'd never met someone with lilac eyes all her life and it made her easy to identify. The word about her being Robb's sister would spread if it hadn't already, so the hooded cloak had become a signature piece of her clothing.

Elsa adamantly refused to ask for refuge from any lord afraid of where their loyalties stood; afraid of what they might do after finding out about her dragons. She was surprised how fast they were growing and knew it wouldn't be long until the news of their existence spread to the seven kingdoms. A dragon wasn't a slave and they would be nothing she would be able to do to hide them.

It took days and days to reach Winterfell, but she couldn't stop the smile at the sight of home. The guards opened the gates of the castle and almost all eyes widened at the sight of her. It took her another moment to understand the reason – as nearly everyone screamed with horror when her dragons circled the sky, screeching loudly before landing in the yard.

Somehow, the place seemed small to house four dragons. They didn't like winter and always searching for warmth before falling asleep. Soon, she'd have to find another place for them. The servants looked ready to flee, but Maester Luwin trudged into the courtyard, studying her dragons before looking at her, Torrhen and Ser Rodrik.

"ELSA! Elsa!" a voice shouted happily.

Elsa just had enough time to kneel before a blur of reddish-brown hair barrelled onto her. She enfolded Rickon in a hug and inturn, he buried his face firmly into her neck and wrapped his arms tightly around her. She felt him sigh against her and he mumbled with relief, "You came back."

She smoothed his unruly hair lovingly and muttered, "I promised, didn't I?"

He looked at her and retorted bitterly, "Mother promised too. She hasn't come back."

"She wanted to come, but Robb is alone and she's helping him in looking for Sansa and Arya." She told him softly before leaning forward and pressing a kiss on top of his head, hoping to give him some comfort in the absence of his family.

Rickon looked bigger than she remembered and with a pang, she realized how young he was to be living in the fear of war and without his family. A screech made both of them turn to see two wolves sniffling the dragons, who in turn were doing the same. By now, Elsa had become familiar with the pattern. It might be because they'd nearly grown together, but the animals ended up playing with each other by the end of the day. She noticed with surprise that both the wolves had grown, Shaggydog a bit more than Summer, but her dragons were approximately the same height. Ser Rodrick was talking to Master Luwin, while Torrhen stayed by her side.

She asked him and other men who had been travelling with her, to have some food and rest, but Torrhen stayed by her side and she shook her head fondly at the man. In the days he had been assigned as her 'guard', they'd formed a sort of friendship. He was one of the few people who didn't fear her. He'd thanked her for saving his brother and even swore to protect her until the day he lived.

"They're soo big!" Rickon gushed before looking at her and asked enthusiastically, "Can I ride them now?!"

"They are still young and you could get hurt." She said, making him pout. So, she tapped his nose with her finger and added, "If they get bigger, then yes."

The youngest Stark slumped dramatically at the prospect of waiting, but the glimmer of hope in his eyes told her that he would more likely chase the dragons as if they were his new pets. She would've to make sure the dragons understood that their fire could harm the people and to be careful. For now, she took Rickon's hand and said, "Let's go. Bran must be waiting."

"He's in Godswood," Rickon informed, clinging onto her.

She took a look at her dragons, who were sniffling the two wolves… or was it the other way round? Leaving them for now, they made their way inside. For the first time, she noticed how quiet it was… how empty. Nothing like the place they grew up in.

"Hodor!" Hodor exclaimed as soon as he saw her and she smiled at him before her eyes fell on Bran, who was sitting on the ground, staring at the Weirwood tree intensely.

"Bran." She called softly.

He turned to look at her, seemingly surprised to see her, but still stated calmly, "You're back."

She immediately noticed that Bran looked worn and tired as if he hadn't slept properly in days. He had been in charge of Winterfell since Robb's departure and clearly, it had taken its toll on him. Sure, he had Master Luwin to guide him, but he had been left alone as the Lord of Winterfell. Elsa wondered how such a young child was handling such an immense amount of pressure. Now, she understood why Robb had asked her to return to Winterfell and help his brother. It was obvious in his parting words, how much he worried about the two Starks left behind – 'I need you to stay and help Bran. Rickon also needs someone who can show him he's not been abandoned by his family. You need to help me by staying in Winterfell until my return.' And she swore to protect the two of them to the best of her ability.

She rushed forward to hug him and pulled back before asking, "How are you?"

Instead of replying, he simply nodded. His eyes searched hers as he asked frantically, "Is Robb well? And mother?"

"They're both fine." She assured him and saw him visibly slumping with relief. Then, she continued, "Robb and your mother were worried about you, so they sent me home."

He seemed surprised, but his eyes shined with hope as he asked, "You're staying?"

"Yes." She replied, laughing when Rickon cheered.

She looked at the ceiling, feeling strange in her own home. Her dragons loved the warmth and she couldn't leave them outside in cold. When she'd asked Master Luwin, he had given her one of the biggest rooms in the castle. In turn, asked her to stay with the dragons as she was the only one who wasn't scared of them. She and the two Starks. She understood his scepticism regarding four fire breathing dragons, but still, moving wings was a bit too extensive in her opinion.

Her dragons had been fed and were practically spawled in front of the two chimneys. Though this wasn't her chamber, she hadn't realised until now how difficult it had been in a tent. It made her wonder; how long would Robb have to stay in the middle of the war or how long until they got Sansa and Arya back?

The door of her chamber cracked open and before she could ask who it was, Shaggydog poked his head in. Just above him was Rickon, who peeked inside and called softly, "Elsa?"

He didn't wait for her response, instead, entered after his wolf and closed the door with a soft click. He tiptoed his way towards her bed until he was standing beside her and called again, "El?"

She smiled and he grinned back. Lifting the covers, he climbed beside her and then asked in a small voice, "Can I sleep here tonight?"

"Come." She mumbled, lifting the covers, so he could crawl in the warmth of the furs. Shaggy, on the other hand, crawled closer to the dragons, who looked at him but decided to ignore his existence in favour of resting.

Once Rickon was settled and comfortable, he turned to look at her and asked, "When is Mother coming back?"

Bran had warned her of this. That Rickon asked the same question every day, but since their father's death, he'd got increasingly hostile. It was no longer a question, but rather a demand. Elsa knew why he craved comfort more than Bran did. He was too young and had been ignored by his mother – even if it wasn't done deliberately. Being an orphan herself, she knew the feeling. He missed his family terribly and it was natural to find comfort in her. Elsa moved her hand to smooth out his wild hair, hoping it might give him some sort of comfort in absence of his mother.

"Hopefully, soon."

He sighed unhappily and asked again, "And Robb?"

Elsa's face twisted with sorrow. She wished she could give him an easy answer, but she didn't want to give him false hope. She wanted him to know that no matter what, he wasn't alone and his family loved him. She told him quietly, "Robb and your mother will be back as soon as they get Sansa and Arya back."

He opened his mouth to ask something else but ended up yawning. He was sleepy and she didn't mind him sleeping beside her. She rubbed his back soothingly like she'd seen Lady Catelyn doing when he was born. It didn't take him long to curl close to her and fall asleep.

Watching his chest rise and fall rhythmically, made her pray to the old gods and the New, hoping they wouldn't end up making a liar out of her.

A Few Moons Later

"What are you doing?"

"Concentrating." She replied without looking at him. For some reason, the magic in Godswood was strong. It always had been, but then she'd avoided the place like a plague. Now though, was a different story. Here, she was able to harness the magic and it was somehow, connected to the wirewood tree.

"Why?" Torrhen asked again.

"The shield I conjure can hide the dragons." She opened her eyes, stared at the tree and told him slowly, "I was wondering if I can cast a similar shield which can protect us from the weapons?"

"Protect us from the weapons?" he repeated curiously.

Elsa didn't respond, frowning at something. She stood up, whirled to look at him and stated suddenly, "Attack me."

His eyes widened, taking a step back as if she was about to attack him and stammered, "W-what, my lady?!"

"Yes, swing your sword." She nodded eagerly.

"I am here to protect you!" He informed her as if she'd gone mad.

She winked at him and muttered cheekily, "Try not to kill me then."

He gaped at her for a long time before asking incredulously, "You want me to hit you with the sword?"

"Yes." She readied herself, but Torrhen shook his head turned around and left. Elsa was left gaping at his back and was about to hunt him down when he returned.

He showed her a sword and said, "It's a wooden sword. At least, the blow won't be fatal."

Elsa's heart warmed and she smiled. Torrhen, on the other hand, swung his sword nervously, but slowly.

"For fuck's sake, Torrhen!" She sighed with frustration and ordered, "You're not going to hurt anyone swinging it like that. Hit me like a man!"

Torrhen nodded albeit reluctantly, while Elsa braced herself, feeling the magic surrounding her more and more as time went by. The shield she imagined expanded just as Torrhen swung his sword. The moment it connected with the invisible wall, he was thrown back and landed on his back with a loud thud.

Elsa gasped and rushed to check on him. "God! Are you alright?"

"I think you broke my neck." Was the reply she received.

Elsa rolled her eyes, deciding that he must be fine if he was still sassing and helped him up. He winced painfully, looking dazed.

"I don't know what happened. The shield should've turned the sword to ash." She mused, a frown marring her features.

"Well, at least we know the enemy won't be getting back up soon if he tried to attack you." He mumbled sarcastically, tilting his neck from side to side, making sure he didn't require a healer.

"Again." She stated.

Torrhen's mouth fell open and he spoke, "You cannot be serious!"

She arched a brow as if to say 'what do you think?' He nearly whined, but picked the sword and got ready for the long and seemingly painful day ahead.

She turned in time to see Theon drawing his bow and shooting an arrow close to Grey Wind's heart.

"No…" she gasped as the wolf fell, whimpering with pain. A man she hadn't seen before crept from the shadows and made his way towards the defenceless wolf silently. He pulled a dagger out and slit his throat.

At the same time, she heard the piercing cry of a baby and whirled around to see Robb lying on the snow, gasping for air as blood gushed from a gash across his neck. But what surprised her was the baby clutched into his arms, who was bleeding as well. Horrified, she ran towards them, falling on her knees next to the two. Her eyes darting between the babe, who looked like a Robb must've been when he was born – curly reddish-brown hair and Tully blue eyes. Her hands moved over the two of them, unsure how to help. But she was too late as the babe's cries died at the same time Robb stopped breathing.

"NO!" She cried out, still unable to touch her brother. "ROBB!"

Hatred and fury filled her heart and she vowed to avenge the death of her brother and the unknown babe.

Out of nowhere, she saw Rhaegar Targaryen and Layanna Stark holding a newborn babe. Before she could ask for help, her father stated – 'The dragon must have three heads.'

The three vanished and suddenly, huge shadows fell upon her. She turned to see her dragons standing behind her – larger than the trees behind them, menacing and powerful. She didn't notice her hands were on fire as well, but the man who had been enjoying Robb's suffering until now paled drastically. In her determination to avenge her brother, she ignored the destruction caused by her and her dragons, reducing everything and everyone around them to ashes.

She woke up gasping for breath, not even noticing that tears were falling down her eyes freely. Elsa wasn't sure what the dream had been about, but it seemed like a warning. Now, she was even more sceptical about trusting Theon as Robb did.

Then there were Rhaegar and Lyanna. Hadn't Maester Aemon said something similar? 'The dragon has three heads and only together, will they be able to end the long night.'

And who was the babe? When she'd seen Lyanna's spirit, she had said a name – Aegon. Was the babe Aegon? Who was he? Lyanna and Rhaegar's child? If yes, did he survive? No one other than Ned Stark would've known, but he was gone.

Her father had left her mother and his children to die because of Lyanna Stark. Elsa decided she didn't care. If the child lived, she didn't want to see his or her face ever again.

The Courtyard

"What did you see in your dream?" Elsa asked again. Bran looked away but didn't answer, so she asked softly, "Was it something bad? Tell me."

Bran seemed far away as he said, "I dreamt that the sea came to Winterfell. I saw waves crashing against the gates and the water came flowing over the walls. It flooded the castle. Drowned men were floating here, in the yard. Ser Rodrik was one of them."

The sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach increased, but she plastered a smile and said, "The sea is hundreds of miles away."

"I know. It's just a stupid dream." He mumbled dejectedly.

"If it means so much to you, I can write to Maester Aemon and ask him about the three-eyed raven."

Bran gave her a smile, which made it worth the effort.

She made her way to the library, the only place where she would be able to talk to someone, who might be able to help. Even though the door was open, she knocked before calling, "Maester Luwin?"

The man was writing something, but stopped to look at her and raised his eyebrows questioningly.

"May I speak with you?" she asked, still uncomfortable at the idea of revealing her identity, but she was willing to do it if it helped Robb in winning this war.

"Is it about your sudden interest in Targaryen history?" He asked curiously before shaking his head and stating, "I'm afraid I cannot help you with that."

"Wait!" Elsa nearly shouted and added hastily, "Robb needs an army and I think – I think, I can help."

He stared at her intensely and kept the quill down. Keeping his eyes locked onto hers, he asked, "Do you think it wise?"

She frowned. The man couldn't possibly know what she'd been thinking and wondered, "What? How do you know…?"

"Old men are quite easy to ignore… which is why Lord Stark confided in me after your dragons were born." He finished slowly.

Her eyes widened and, inside her chest, her heart thumped wildly. It took a moment to compose herself, but she asked in an even voice that didn't seem to belong to her. "Does Lady Stark know?"

"He did not wish to reveal it to anyone." The old man looked far from happy as he said this, but Elsa slumped with relief. It was necessary to keep it hidden from Lady Catelyn because she knew Lady Stark wouldn't think twice before trading a Targaryen for her family's safety.

"You – you know my father…" she stumbled across words, but Maester Luwin held up a hand and said, "A child is not guilty of her father's crime."

"Oh," Elsa mumbled. Maester Luwin didn't know the truth. He thought Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped and raped Lyanna. But why would father tell half the truth? He must've trusted the Maester, but not enough. She wished she could talk to Ned Stark and ask him all the questions only he seemed to know.

Right now, though, she was here for something and it was good that Maester Luwin knew already. Bracing herself, she demanded, "I need to know which houses are loyal to mine. And soon, so I can know who to call when Robb needs help."

For the first time, the man asked in a fatherly tone, "Are you sure you want to do this?"

'The whole world will know, went unsaid, but she understood. There will be no more hiding once she sent the ravens. Elsa was sure of one thing – the Targaryen loyalists fought for her father, so they might fight for her. Also, she knew for a fact that the Martells still wanted revenge for their sister's death. Dorne was estimated to have an army equivalent in size to that of the Vale and the north. If she could convince the Martells, Robb would be able to win the war. But there was another thing. She didn't think the Martells would just give their army to a northern girl claiming to be Elia's daughter. Which was why she needed to travel to Drone and meet the prince herself.

Deciding against writing to them, Elsa blinked at Maester Luwin, who was still staring at her and stated confidently, "I have magic and four dragons who are growing faster than I thought possible. The Targaryen loyalists will come as soon as they hear the daughter of Rhaegar Targaryen still lives."

The old man looked surprised at the easy way she'd mentioned about her magic, when her whole life, she'd done nothing but be ashamed of being different. He inclined his head, but said, "Robb won't like it."

She knew quite well that Robb would disapprove, but he left her with no choice. He was leading the war against the Lannisters impeccably, but he was too honourable, just like his father… and Elsa knew that Tywin Lannister would use it to his advantage in one way or the other. Robert Baratheon killed Rhaegar because of his anger, but 'the lions' backstabbed her family to get to power. Elsa wasn't about to let Robb march South without making sure that he had the strength to face the enemy.

"I would've been dead if it wasn't for Lord Stark. The Starks are in danger and I will do everything I can to make sure Robb wins this war. Whether he likes it or not." She told Maester Luwin.

Elsa wasn't sure if it was her imagination or suddenly the old man gave her the ghost of a smile as he said, "As you wish. Follow me."

Great Hall

"They came from the sky, my Lord. The winged beasts. They burned my sheep."

Elsa exchanged a look with Torrhen, who grimaced.

The shepherd continued, "And it's not just the winged beasts, my lord. There's wolves in them hills now. They come down in the night and eat my sheep. I have a family – a wife and a girl. I will not have food if they eat more of my sheep. My three sons is away fighting for your brother, my lord. They'll fight, keep fighting till they're told to go home. And I have no one to man my flock now. Only me. I can't keep watch all day and all night."

Bran looked at Master Luwin, who gave a nod. So, the current Lord of Winterfell said, "We will pay for the sheep and I assure you, you and your family won't be harmed by them in any way. We can also send two orphan boys from Winters townhome with you to help watch over your flock if you can give them room and board."

"My wife always prayed for more children. We'll look after them. Thank you, my lord. And may the gods bless you and yours."

The proceedings of the day were done and they were about to leave when Ser Rodrik Cassel entered the hall with a few of his men and said, "Bran! Lord Stark. Torrhen's Square is under siege."

Master Luwin asked worriedly, "Torrhen's Square is barely forty leagues from here. How can the Lannister's strike so far north?"

"Might be a raiding party led by the Mountain. Might be sell-swords paid by Tywin Lannister." Torrhen interrupted.

"We have to help them," Bran said immediately.

"Most of the fighting men are away with Robb, but I can gather two hundred decent men." Ser Rodrick said.

"Do you need so many?" Master Luwin questioned again.

"If we can't protect our bannermen, why should they protect us?" Bran stated before turning to look at Rodrik and said, "Go, Ser Rodrik. Take the men you need."

"Bran!" Elsa exclaimed urgently. "It could be a ploy! If Tywin Lannister gets his hands on you or Rickon, there would be no way to win this war. We can't leave you or Winterfell unprotected."

Torrhen stepped forward and stated confidently, "I'll stay here with five of our men."

Bran gave him a nod of thanks as Ser Rodrik spoke, "Won't take long, my lord. Southerners don't do well up here."

Ser Rodrik left with his entourage, but Elsa had a feeling that her nightmares were about to come true.

EN: Ned Stark informed Maester Luwin about Elsa being a Targaryen after the dragons were born. Ned didn't trust the Targaryens, but after seeing Elsa with four dragons, he remembered the Mad King, so basically, he told the old man to keep an eye on Rhaenys. It was also one of the reasons he didn't leave her with someone else. He made the man promise not to tell any living soul, not until it became absolutely necessary.

He kept Jon's identity secret because of his promise to Lyanna and because Jon was his blood. Elsa wasn't. Simple.
